Rounding up from 4.5 stars

This was a nice mix of short horror stories by various authors. No themes were repeated, so you genuinely got 10 unique tales in this anthology.

3.75⭐️ When I have excess downtime at work, I like to read books on kindle. I stumbled upon this collection of short horror stories, and it was the perfect thing to read throughout the week. It took me about 2 weeks (10 days since I don’t work on the weekends) to finish this collection.

Most of the stories were interesting and gripping; some left an impact. All of the stories had a horror theme to them, but not all had unfortunate endings, which I enjoyed. Occasionally, I’d come across a story I didn’t care about as much, but with the majority being so good, I couldn’t even tell you which stories I didn’t like.

Overall, a good collection.

Horror stories are my palate cleanser when I need a break from my usual reads. I've been turning to this for nearly a year to read a story at a time when in a reading slump. It's been fun, but I'm glad to be moving on to the next volume.

Condensing my notes on each story to fit within the character limits for a review:

1. The Night Itself by Travis Brown.  5 stars. This is an immediately engrossing read. Told from the perspective of a man "allowed to remember," it's a vivid sort of inexplicable horror. I still have no idea what actually happened, but it is such an impactful little story that will absolutely linger with me. My favorite story, I think.

2. The Howler of Dogbone Spit by J.G. Martin. 5 Stars. This is a story focusing on two 14 year old boys at summer camp, so it does read as a scary story for younger audiences. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though, and think all readers will, especially if they enjoy campfire stories.

3. The Twitch Stream by Connor Phillips. 3 stars. Very quick and not very scarily written with a very moralistic tone overall.  I get what it's trying to say, but it's been done better elsewhere.

4. The Monitors by Micah Edwards. 3 stars.  It's interesting and could feed quite a few conspiracy theories, but it's not scary or likely to linger in my mind.

5.  The Jukebox by Sarah Jane Huntington.  5 stars.  Love it! It's an incredibly quick read and, to me, kind of a cute story. Oh, won't you please take me home?

6. The Pond by Michael Marks.  3 stars.  It had elements for great horror, especially the atmosphere and setting, but I'm just not that into this kind of eldritch phenomena.

7.  The Things They Take Away by T.J. Lea.  4 stars.  Very creepy.  The premise is very interesting and the story written with a palpable dread.

8.  The Hanging Man In Room 3.  2.5 stars.  Good descriptions to set the scene and tell the tale of The Hanging Man, but the overall story vibe is a bit done.

9.  The Room of Change by René Rhen.  2 stars.  My second least favorite of the stories.  It wastes the horror potential and just gets depressing.

10.  I Played the Blair Witch Game and She's Stalking Me by Brandon Wills.  1 star.  My least favorite of the collection.  I could complain about so much, but it's ultimately just a good idea with basically no real effort put into making it into a scary story.

This marks my initial foray into this captivating series of books, and I must say, this first installment was quite intriguing. The stories within are succinct, each crafted with its unique flair, resulting in a varied tapestry where some tales shine brighter than others. Yet, despite this disparity, they all managed to retain an engaging quality that held my attention.

Tonight, dear reader, we won’t merely skim the surface of terror. Instead, we are about to plunge headfirst into a tumultuous whirlpool of the macabre. Prepare yourselves, for the narratives that follow bring forth a chilling assortment of nightmares, featuring...

In the dead of night, as most of us are tucked safely in our beds, a team of garbage collectors arrives under the cover of darkness, tasked with collecting more than just the usual refuse. Their nighttime rituals reveal a sinister underbelly of the everyday that is both unsettling and captivating.

Imagine, if you will, a family watching in horror as the stars flicker and darken, one by one, ultimately plunging the night sky into a suffocating blackness. As the familiar constellations disappear, they become powerless witnesses to an unfathomable force creeping into their lives, bringing with it nightmarish fears beyond their wildest imagination.

Consider the plight of a dedicated teacher, whose fascination with a horror-themed video game spirals alarmingly out of control. What begins as a simple distraction evolves into a haunting obsession, as he discovers to his dismay that the line between reality and the game's sinister narrative has blurred—its main character appears to have stepped right into his world, with perilous consequences.

These accounts and others within this collection are not merely tales to pass the time; they are chilling snippets of nightmares, fragmented glimpses into an abyss where fear resides. So, draw the curtains tight, secure your doors, and brace yourself—hold on fiercely to that precious semblance of sanity that remains, for what lies ahead may haunt your thoughts long after the final page is turned.

Every single story was different, creepy and fun. Excellent anthology collection, will be definitely looking up other books in series and also after every story there is a recommended book related to the specific writer, so my wish list definitely expanded.

Some of my favourites were:

The Night Itself - read it in the dark on my kindle, so the setting of peaceful family night turning into horror with faces looking into their windows and stars stop shining was creepy enough to make me feel unsettled.

The Howler of Dogsbone Spit - absolute twist that I didn't expect. Not every spooky summer camp legend is what it seems.

The Twitch Stream - streamer picks random subscribers to play online games with him. One of them is a 7 years old kid who asks him to play Minecraft but the gaming session turns into absolutely hell real quick.

I Played The Blair Witch Game and She's Stalking Me - nice little come back for the lore of Blair Witch via the video game that was released.

There is something for everyone. Recommending to all horror fans :)

This is a book of short stories, a Tales from the Crypt, or a Twilight Zone sort of thing. It's a rather clever idea. The book offers ten stories from ten different authors with a link to each author's complete book related to the story. You get to download this book of short stories for free, and then if you like a story in it, you can then purchase that book. What a great way to discover new authors and new story lines to read !!!

frightful stories

These short stories will get you thinking. I wouldn’t say they will keep me up at night but do give a slight uneasiness. I really enjoyed how short the stories are and only being 10 of them was a joy. I will be reading volume 2 next to see what other scary stories there will be. Until next time be ready for what lies hidden in the shadows of your room and think twice about playing a video game.

I loved having this book to feed my "instant fear" desires. Sometimes, you just need a quick, well-written story to keep you going. Every title in this collection was fascinating and dived into all subgenres of horror. I loved the psychological plots and intensity given by the authors. Definitely recommended for followers of nosleep and other trails of dark tales on the internet.

I'm beginning to think short stories aren't for me. There were a couple of good stories in this collection but I think they were missing a satisfying conclusion. I have two more volumes in this series and I will read them but I just don't think this series is for me.

Well what a rollacoaster of scare.

Okay so not all of the stories were spooky scary, but some of them, some of them made me stop and think. The last one was probably the creepiest for me.
Was a good selection of stories none the less, glad I grabbed this one!

I love this series

It's been a while since I enjoyed the series without having it to be all human nature ones. This one you don't have to worry. This has monster creatures the demon zombies and weirdness. I guess five stars out of five

A couple of the stories were hit or miss, but there are a couple of gems also. I will let other readers discover them for themselves.

I think that this may be one of the only horror antologies that I've ever read where I haven't skipped a story, winner.

quick and easy read. None of the storys were 'neck hair rising', but still made me think twice. Still worth the read and I'll probably read the rest too.

It was a nice read, not one that marked me tho the stories were modern and easy to read and very diverse.

It's a fun little collection to pick up when you only have like ten minutes to read. Each Story can be finished by that time.

Kind of nice, short, horror stories. None of them really got my interest however. Reading the book blurb on Amazon and Goodreads, I don’t even remember the last story anymore.

I still find it a worthy read for those that want some short horror stories.

At least the first two stories were kind of disturbing.
