A chateau in sunny Provence should have meant a holiday, but murder casts a long shadow...
Lady Georgia and Millie Brunel are invited to the Chateau de Valmy by Anne MacLeod, the vicomtesse, an old school friend of Georgia’s. In Provence, Anne assures them, they will find sunshine, the scent of lavender, wonderful meals, and a respite from danger.
But before a week has passed, Anne is prostrate with grief. Her husband the vicomte is dead, and Georgia and Millie find evidence that suggests his death wasn’t a natural one. Anne begs them not to involve the local gendarmes—the family will be publicly shamed, and their primary suspect, of course, will be Anne herself.
With no help forthcoming, then, it is up to Georgia and Millie to discover who could have done this terrible thing. Is someone in the chateau holding a fatal grudge? Or is Anne hiding a secret? Because murder is always about money, power, revenge ... or love.

Though the books can be read as standalones, there are threads of love and family, tea and chickens, running through them all. No strong language, just a very proper kiss or two and a satisfying solution. Enjoy!

This was an enjoyable entry in the Lady Georgia Brunel steampunk mystery series. This time Georgia and her aunt/friend Millie are off to France to visit an old school friend of Georgia's. Shortly after they arrive, there's a murder, and it seems as if any of the guests at the party may have had a reason to kill.
Neither of the men interested in Georgia and Millie are present this time, other than through letters. Georgia's son Teddy is also off page in this one. Nonetheless, it was an interesting book (perhaps a bit less steampunk than usual), and I was puzzled as to who our villain was right along with Georgia and Millie.

A rather splendid murder mystery, set in Provence, where Lady Georgia is spending time with a school friend, along with her aunt Millie. The pleasant surroundings are disturbed when the husband of the friend dies suddenly, in what turns out to be a murder...
The steampunk setting is maintained well - even if Lady Georgia is perhaps rather 'modern' for the period, though that is part of the fun, of course. An enjoyable mystery, with several twists and red herrings along the way... And there are chickens!
