The Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon: Sweet Medicine Spirits - Novavose

Rate this book
The DEAD HORSE CANYON Trilogy's explosive conclusion!
Picking up where "Return to Dead Horse Grandfather Spirits" left off, we find that much to her enemy’s dismay, Sara’s life is spared, but with a steep price. A million dollar bounty remains on her demise, motivating another to threaten her life. Paralyzed by the last attempt to eliminate her, her Native American friend, Charlie, promises to help restore her health so she can walk again. Before he can accomplish that, however, the unthinkable happens, which disrupts and redirects their plans.

To fulfill his promise to his Northern Cheyenne Grandfather to complete a four-day ceremonial fast at the Sacred Mountain, Charlie journeys to Bear Butte in South Dakota, known to his tribe as Novavose. A series of startling visions reveal the full scope of his destiny. Of prime importance is to restore the ancient Earth Giving Ceremony known as the Massaum, originally revealed thousands of years before by their prophet, Sweet Medicine.

Has the time come at last for Native People to unite and fulfill Black Cloud’s curse on Dead Horse Canyon? And what about those other 19th century prophecies directed to the 7th Generation by Black Elk and Crazy Horse?

Phase I of the PURF complex is complete. A gala open house to celebrate is scheduled around the same time as the Gathering of Indigenous Leaders. While the underground facility is filled to the brim with corrupt lobbyists, contractors, and government officials, not far away a host of First Nation Americans is entrenched in a ceremony that promises to restore them to their land.

What could possibly go wrong?

5-STAR EDITORIAL REVIEW FROM READERS' FAVORITE

"
The Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon by Marcha Fox and Pete Risingsun stands out for its sharp writing and complete ability to immerse readers, especially in Charlie's spiritual transformation. Poor Sara just cannot get a break. Attacked, paralyzed, kidnapped, and then labeled a domestic terrorist and sanctioned! This isn’t just a fight for survival; this is about the power of truth in the face of overwhelming opposition. Charlie fits into this description, with a spectacular ceremony for Sara's healing, but also as a powerful catalyst when he is in the presence of Grandmother Earth and the consequences of his actions. Fox and Risingsun are a dream writing team in every way, and, culturally, this portrayal of Charlie's heritage is painted from the sky to the smallest pebble and the fire burning in between. The pacing is elevated by point of view shifts and all the drama, but also a surprising relationship transformation as well. Ultimately, this finale succeeds with a perfect 10 landing. Very, very highly recommended."

Marcha Fox was born in Peekskill, New York and has lived in California, Utah and Texas in the course of raising her family. She now lives in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.

Her most recent work is the multi-award winning "Dead Horse Canyon Trilogy" written with Northern Cheyenne, Pete Risingsun. A cross-cultural conspiracy thriller, it has been praised for its skillful integration of modern political themes, suspense, and indigenous history and culture. Details are available on the series' website, https://www.Dead-Horse-Canyon.com.

Her passion for science fiction began as a child. While her first stories were written in 6th grade describing her teachers' planets of origin, her determination to write seriously in that genre knew no bounds, such that she went back to college in her 30s to obtain a bachelor’s of science degree in physics.

After graduation she spent over 23 years working in the aerospace industry, most of which was at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas where she held a variety of positions including technical writer, engineer and eventually manager.

Science and engineering experience notwithstanding, it’s the unexplained mysteries of the cosmos, such as psi phenomena, time travel and the concept of a universal consciousness, which fascinate her the most and provide the setting for her Star Trails Tetralogy. Centered on the Brightstar family who has been torn apart by a storm of political and scientific intrigue, they will stop at nothing until they are reunited. The Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon by Marcha Fox is the third installment in the author's trilogy which fans have long anticipated. It is well worth the wait, with Fox and her co-author Pete Risingsun having pooled their intellectual resources in giving readers a unique and enthralling adventure into a possible world of tomorrow. Only the supernatural acts as a foreboding shadow over a doomsday scenario that one won't forget.

Sara is the major protagonist, a woman of Cheyenne descent on the run from bounty hunters seeking to cash in on the price on her head set by a conglomerate of enemies. Distraction comes in the form of a series of international catastrophes creating earthquakes threatening major cities across the planet. A mysterious organization known as PURF offers sanctuary to the political elite in an area designated as an Indian reservation. The property is destroyed in what the Government describes as a terrorist attack, and Sara and her deceased husband Bryan are considered prime suspects hunted by the FBI.

The theme of betrayal resonates throughout the novel as the Indian point of view is examined in detail. Indian nations were annexed into the United States as the Manifest Destiny was realized. Their beliefs and philosophies were considered part of tribal folklore that was dismissed as irrelevant. Only they were still part of Indian culture, and the natives believed in a day of reckoning when Mother Earth would swallow up her enemies. The element of revenge permeates the storyline as White Wolf and Littlewolf are among Sara's allies hoping to see the Great Spirit obliterate their enemies as catastrophic tremors wreak havoc across the land.

The authors depict a grand tragedy in which the world of the ancients and the Great White Father collide in an unforgettable event ripped from tomorrow's headlines. For American Indian buffs, speculative fiction lovers and literary fiction readers alike, Marcha Fox's Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon is one you don't want to miss.

I waited years for the final story in this trilogy, only to be sorely disappointed. There is so much I could say, but I'll sum it up: it's long and boring. I skipped through many parts, determined to finish, but when I got to the end, I wished I hadn't bothered.

Also, as I said in my review of the second book, the word "y'all" is plural, not singular. It drove me crazy to have a character say that when referring to one person.

Another factual error: tornado watches mean conditions are "right" for potential tornadoes. A tornado warning means rotation has been detected and take shelter immediately. However, the author doesn't seem to know this. Here's a direct quote from the book. "Watches were worse than warnings. Warnings noted conditions could turn ugly; watches declared they already had."

Can anything else be trusted if the author missed something that I've known since grade school?

The ending was too incredible even to believe. You'd have to read it to see, but I don't recommend wasting your time.

By delving into the supernatural, mystical world of Native American culture and by mixing in deep Astrological significance, this novel takes the reader on an incredible, inspirational journey. The talented authors seamlessly blend reality with surreality, making the story believable on so many levels. And they create a place where the living and the dead can coexist on the same plane.

Woven into the spiritual aspects of the novel is a complex, action-packed, multi-layered storyline with an unexpected, thrilling climax. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series, and especially this third book. Its touching end will make you believe that despite a world in flux, there are still joy-filled moments that offer rays of hope.

Government corruption ignites a 19th Century Cheyenne curse. Revenge of Dead Horse Canyon is book three in the series. I've read the entire series by my friend Marcha Fox and her co-author, Pete Risingsun.

"Revenge" is a big book sitting at 165,857 words. I was the editor. It has a deep plot. What a magnificent read. You will step into the world of the Cheyenne and learn many of their thought processes and mysteries through the Cheyenne characters portrayed in the book. Characters you will fall in love with. Characters you will fantasize horrible death wishes for with fingers crossed. And sleepless nights as you read it.
