After ensuring Earth’s protection from off-world invaders and clearing countless dungeons, Xavier’s power has reached new heights.
But the Tower of Champions still has some surprises instore for the True Progenitor, and the System doesn’t always play fair.
Gone were the days he could stomp each floor with ease—now he truly has to become a force to be reckoned with if he’s to not only survive, but thrive.
Don't miss book 4 of the action-packed LitRPG Apocalypse Series by Todd Herzman, with levels, a detailed System, classes, skills, towers, loot, & everything you love about progression fantasy. It's perfect for fans of Defiance of the Fall, System Universe, and He Who Fights With Monsters
some people will give this a five star review four stars for me, cliffhanger.
A really good book, but only four stars because this book ended in a cliffhanger. Even though the next book is out as I write this review, I would’ve had to wait if I had read it earlier. The reason it took me so long to read this book is because I was annoyed at the side characters. The MC was settled with. I think the side characters in his party or albatross is around his neck and basically the character. Justin totally annoyed me. I love this direction of the book and the progression of power for the MC. I hope the author keeps this progression going and I will go into the next book as I finish this review. It’s excellent a different world, different characters, different enemies to fight, love this book.
Aaaaargh. Books 1-2 of this series were amazing. Then it was like a switch flipped and books 3-4 were lackluster at best. I started noticing more and more signs of AI-assisted content beginning about midway into book 3. I continued forward hoping that it was only a temporary writing block of an author being pressed with deadlines to complete. However, the writing quality kept diminishing and finally about 75% into book 4 I decided to DNF the series. Either the author burned out after the initial books, or he ran out of ideas. Lots of the same old crap AI content is now rearing its ugly head. Everything becomes "measured and planned." MC gets stuck in his own head for lengthy analysis of each little decision. MC suddenly has always been the "chosen one" of the system. "Potential" becomes openly spoken of as currency. Odd fluctations in personality traits that dont make a lick of sense. An overtly ridiculous and nonsensical training montage with an underqualified trainer. Sudden changes in the underlying laws of magic in the system. I gave up when the AI content completely derailed the story by trying to introduce a change from mage path to more "primal" bestial powers. Just stupid. Oh and lets throw time magic in the story arc too just to make sure MC becomes as OP as possible. What ever happened to the whole "not being able to walk backwards on the path?" Now consequences of breaking contracts can include the threat of being reset to level 1 and being stripped of all your skills and spells. In other words, one could easily walk backwards on the path. The list goes on....
One of the great things about System-based fiction is the premise that the "System" is an immutable and constant enforcer of System rules or laws granting a path to power and progression. The rules may not always seem fair or equitable to all parties, but they are reliably unchanging. The problem with AI is that it constantly forgets this when it attempts to generate creative narratives, and instead tries to treat the System as a god-like entity with personal motives, that can change and bend rules at will.
With great regret, AI-assisted writing ruined this series for me. And no, you can disregard the reviews that say the author managed to turn a stale book 3 and 4 around. The quality only gets worse. DNF
If you like the previous books in the series, you're going to enjoy this one. If you didn't like the previous books in the series, you're not going to like this. If you're just starting, I would highly recommend going back to the first book, but you can start here and still enjoy it. It'll just be several places where there'll be references and characters that you'll have no conditation for and won't hold any weight because you want to have any frame of reference for them. I'm not going to get into the plot of this book very much because one it would take away from your enjoyment. If you do read it and two I can't do that very well. I'm not good at that sort of thing. I can tell you there's some really good fight scenes. Some interesting used to Powers some great skill progression I'm writing this review with voice to text, so I apologize for any spelling errors and mainly to help the author get more sales because this is a good book and deserves to be read by many people
*Edit* Upon further reading, the author did not go where I thought he would go. Shame on me for pre-judging! It turned out to be a worthwhile read, although I still wish we got to follow what happened to the other characters in the book. It feels a little disjointing not to be able to see their struggles with going through floors without their ace. Hopefully we get to followup on them in the next book.
I don't know that I will continue reading this book. It's a good story, but about 2/3rds of the way through the book, it seems as if the Author *Spoiler* is planning to switch to a solo vibe similar to Primal Hunter. Where the MC is mostly by himself. Which is the same since I had grown to like the other characters. Might come back to it might not, but if you don't like stories where it's just a MC and his musings, I'd be wary of this switchup.
Although the MC is rushing through levels and upgrades, and I enjoy the battles he fights through, the end of the story looks so far away that I consider reading a story with a more finite end in sight. Having the subtext of “sometime in the far future, if I survive, I need to fight to save the universe” seems a long way off to have the hero trying to power up. If a series ends up going on too long, I tend to get bored with the story/progression and drop a series. I hope the author can avoid this eventuality.
The end is clearly defined and further away than first thought. I am looking forward to your interpretation of what a W.O.T.S. Is capable of. (Foreshadowing a Spoiler Alert) The fight with the entity that end’s all, feels like it’s gonna be someone he is familiar with. Is the spirit of vengeance friend or foe? Did Xavier release that which will cause it all to end? Only Todd will tell!
Sometimes you don't get a choice....that's what Xavier discovers. But that doesn't mean it hurts his growth, it's just a greater challenge that forces him to grow even more. So, yeh, I found I enjoyed this continuation of the series. Herzman continues a pretty straightforward growth of the character in the sense of Xavier continuing to get stronger. How that hairband is a fun journey - and I can't wait to drive into the next book in the series.
Book 3 was good, but was starting to get stale. Todd Herzman clearly recognized that, and went for a major shakeup, getting some good character development while somehow accelerating Xavier's power development even more. I'm really looking forward to what book 5 has to offer.
I almost DNF this one, the beginning of the book focusing on the boring long setup of improbable (and completely unnecessary) stakes. But once the hero reaches a certain level of the Tower, the book becomes enjoyable again, despite the increasingly long interior monologues, which are as laborious as they are painful.
Love it. Great storyline, good twists to move along the journey, and the right mix of detail throughout. Yes, even with a few typos and mistakes, I'm satisfied and left wanting the next...everything in the series.
I read this 4th book over the course of a day. It did not disappoint, although there were spots i skimmed over due to repetition which was very rare. This was highly enjoyable but I look forward to him returning to Earth
I’m loving this series… the MC is awesome and not arrogant, he’s not snippy, I just love him!!! Please keep up the great work, and I love that he doesn’t go in too long of internal tangents, as that can really weigh a book down, so thank you!
Loved the direction this book headed in. The weird dynamic with Xavier and his party was resolved nicely and things were made challenging enough for him the book remained very engaging. Excited to see what happens next!
This series just gets better and better. Great story and progression, with good pacing. Fun main character who is not a sociopath unlike a lot of other characters in this genre. Can’t wait for the next one.
Can’t wait for the next book !! Couldn’t put it down so read this one in one sitting . Great main character and intriguing plot developments help it to stand out within the litrpg genre
Great timeline progression and character development on this book. MC grows wiser and shows stubborn decisiveness.Keep the books coming. I can't wait to see what happens next
Wow! As we watch Xavier use the system to gain power, we think that nothing can stop him. The system throws a complete surprise at him, and Xavier will need to dig deep to keep on going. Excellent forth book in the series!
I really enjoyed reading this book its a great story and so well told the writing was very good and not to farfetched for this type of story ,very good book.
It's a great series. It's loaded with action. I had a hard time putting this book down. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment in the series.
Somehow through most of the book time dilation fields do not help cooldowns. But toward the end they suddenly do. I suppose it must have been the other type.
