#1 New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Publisher's Weekly, and Amazon Charts bestselling author Freida McFadden is a practicing physician specializing in brain injury who has penned multiple Kindle bestselling psychological thrillers and medical humor novels. She lives with her family and possessed cat in a centuries-old three-story home overlooking the ocean, with staircases that creak and moan with each step, and nobody could hear you if you scream. Unless you scream really loudly, maybe.
Note that I am maxed out on friends, so I apologize in advance that I can't friend anyone back!
OMG, I had the time of my life! I laughed so hard my stomach hurt—guffawing, giggling, howling, and making all kinds of ear-piercing sounds!
I literally fell off my chair after laughing too much, and I haven’t been able to stop for the past 20 minutes after reading this line: "I have locked you away... The director of the psychiatric ward is my father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate. He’ll do whatever I tell him to—trust me!"
If you watched Kristen Bell’s mockery of thrillers, "The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window" on Netflix and loved it, I guarantee you’ll fall in love with this book and laugh until you cramp up, maybe even pee yourself, then laugh some more after changing your adult diapers! It’s utterly addictive, unputdownable, and packed with a nail-biting, heart-stopping, spine-chilling twist you won’t see coming. It’s so good, it’ll leave you stunned—just as advertised! (At one point, I even wondered if I had written the blurb myself after a few too many spicy mango margaritas.)
I don’t want to give too much away. I’m only writing about the punchlines that turned me into a laughingstock. When you read this book, words like "Quidditch," "LEDs," "romantasy," "COVID test" (which still gives me chills), "golden-white or black-blue," "the metric system," and "Nickelback" will take on new, hilarious meanings for you.
I know some of you might turn up your noses at this book, calling it illogical or silly, and feeling a little disappointed we’re reading dark comedy instead of one of McFadden’s usual twisty thrillers. But think of it like going to the theater to see Shyamalan’s latest movie, "Trap." It’s fun, even if it has its silly moments. Just enjoy the ride, prepare to laugh, and marvel at McFadden’s wildly creative mind, which is messing with us in the best possible (and most entertaining) way. Plus, don’t forget to check out the excerpt from "Boyfriend" at the end of the book—only two weeks until it’s released, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
Overall: I’m giving this five stars! It’s not a masterpiece or the best literature I’ve ever read, but it made me happy and relaxed. Anything that brings me this much fun deserves those stars! Don’t take everything too seriously—just enjoy the punchlines!
this novella was so unhinged and surprisingly hilarious, i liked it more than i thought i would!
i must say that i didn’t have the best experience with the last books i read by this author, so because of that i couldn’t have the highest of hopes for this book. i certainly didn’t fully believe that i would enjoy this and have a fun time, but thankfully, i did. it was such a nice surprise.
the whole thing was absolutely unserious. if this was not a satirical novel, i would be baffled by the absurdity of it all and call it downright ridiculous. but well, as i said, this is labeled as satire and it’s clearly not meant to be taken seriously, so i didn’t.
is it the best and most interesting book i’ve ever read? not even close. but that’s fine, i still had a great time and it was everything i didn’t know i needed — it made me laugh a bunch of times and it kept me hooked the entire time, what else could i ask for? sometimes all we need is a fun and not-so-very-serious book to pass the time.
i definitely recommend The Widow’s Husband’s Secret Lie if you are looking for a quick, fast-paced and amusing read.

i’ve been looking for short, quick reads to help me reach me goal and this one seems perfect!! it's been awhile since i read a freida mcfadden novel now that i’m noticing.. hopefully i’ll enjoy this one 🤞🏼
many thanks to my bff heather for bringing this book to my radar—she’s a life saver! 😌💌
3.5 Stars - ETA...I'm just gonna go ahead and round up. I've already cracked up laughing telling multiple people about this story today.
Honestly - I swore we were back in Nina's old house with a different couple lol. Freida should write more of these, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
The comeback of the black and blue/white and gold dress took me out. LOL.
Well, hot dang! Before we dive in, let me just say this is a Satire novel. Good ol' Google defines satire as "the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices." So, keep an open mind for this one!
Now, to really get the most out of this book, you need to be part of the awesome "Freida McFadden" social group. I've been a fan from the start, and let me tell you, everything in this book clicked for me—even the most ridiculous bits! There are these little Easter eggs scattered throughout, making any true McFadden fan go, "I knew that! I get what that's all about!" BUT: Make sure you're a fan not a hater or it won't be fair to just join so you can hate all over it.
Okay, I might be overhyping the group, the author, and the book just a bit, but I thought it was so cleverly crafted. It really captures the struggle authors go through—the sweat and tears they pour into a book, only to have someone stomp all over it. And sure, not everyone feels the same way about every book, and I’m all for that. But I hope everyone finds the hidden meaning, the laughter, and the joy that this book is meant to bring.
I face palmed myself so much reading this I’m now blue and black
Was the satire in the room with us!?
This was beyond satire; it was pure absurdity!
Miss McFadden sprung upon us a new novella release (that truly came out of nowhere) that is about a woman named Alice who is grieving after the passing of her husband. Alice is struggling with simple life tasks like picking up a standard shampoo bottle from the shops, or knowing the difference between LED and IUD. Her mind is deteriorating and she believes she is hallucinating because why does she feel everywhere she goes someone is watching her and why does she think the person watching her is her dead husband?… DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNN!🙄
Do you know what this book felt like… It felt like a known procrastinator, the night before scrambling to complete that English assignment on time plucking any and every thought out of nowhere to meet that word count.
WAS THIS NOVELLA REALLY NEEDED?
Frankly I just didn’t get it!? I love humour more than the next person but honestly, I was stone faced reading this. Where was the funny/ hilarious parts at? It just read so dumb to me! I can see that Freida was trying to use every thriller cliché known to man condensed into this small tale but it was FLAT. I got to the end of the story and was scratching my head thinking ‘so what was I meant to take from this?’
I could dive into further about how ridiculous this book was, which i know was the point Frieda was trying to exude. Unfortunately, it just didn’t tickle my funny bones this time round. It reminded me of her other novella ‘The Gift’ but this one exceeded in the absolute stupidity of it all.
Sigh! I’m starting to wonder if I’ll get back the woman who wrote, The Housemaid, Never Lie and The Inmate (my faves). Because since Ward D her book thereafter have needed to in fact seek Book Medical Attention. I’m in a Stockholm Syndrome relationship with this author at this point and I won’t rest till I get the ‘book high’ she once used to give me!
P.S. Tell a lie, Frieda giving herself self promo in her own book, generated a loud ‘HA’ from myself.
P.S.S. Thanks Freida for teaching me a new word...CONGLOMERATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ pre read Dropping all my books to read this… I really don’t know what spell this woman has me under Let’s see how this novella plays out! 😏💙🤍🖤
Ok, so this is a little baby novel full of fun and humor. I loved it. I TOTALLY identified with the FMC with some of her interactions. Totally satirical.
A one sit listen/read, it was effortlessly funny with some real mystery but also silly. Storyline itself was ok for me, but just ok. The humor saved this novella but it got a lite too silly.
Enjoy yourself! Take. Break and listen or read to this sweet little palet cleanser!!!!!
Campy and ridiculous, but also kind of hilarious? I actually didn't realize that this was a satirical novel for longer than I'd care to admit (I'd grabbed an audiobook from the library pretty much at random), but then I got to a certain point – you'll know it when you get to it – and was all “Uh … hold up. WTF is this??” Up until then I'd seriously thought that it was just a typical psychological thriller with perhaps a little more melodrama than usual. Go figure.
Anyway, it's not fine literature by any means, but it also made me snort-laugh way more than my average read. The bit about confusing LEDs with an IUD is pure comedy gold.
3.7 stars, rounded up. This is the only Freida McFadden book I've ever read, but I'm now officially a fan nevertheless.
I went in with such low expectations but it turned out to be quite the opposite. This was pretty hilarious and entertaining and I had an amazing time reading it. It literally had me hooked from the beginning to the end.
I admit, It wasn’t the best book i’ve read but i didn’t have high expectations anyway, it was kind of predictable but it was still fun to read.
I definitely recommend this if you’re someone like me who never reads thrillers and wants to get into them!
Before giving this a bad review… please look up what a Satirical novella is 🥹
I never miss the opportunity to read Freida McFadden and this did not disappoint. It was a quick lighthearted but dark read, which had me laughing out loud at least ten times reading. Favourite line “It’s a Roomba. With a cat riding on it”.
SATIRE: The use of humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices…
So, what is a satirical novella?
From the Publisher’s blurb:
The Widow's Husband's Secret Lie is an utterly addictive, unputdownable, nail-biting, absolutely gripping psychological thriller novella with a shocking, breathtaking, heartstopping, spine-chilling twist that you won't see coming, will leave you stunned, and will literally have you picking your jaw up off the floor and bringing it to the nearest hospital for major facial reconstructive surgery.
Yes, that is satire! 🤣
And, I have NO WORDS for how dumb our widowed narrator is!
Really, you have to listen for yourself. If I hadn’t been told in advance that this was written as Satire-it would have been the most eye rolling, OTT psychological thriller that I have ever read and probably a DNF! 🤣
A fun 2 hour 39 minute listen! 🎧 which pokes fun at the genre!
3.5⭐️ rounded up because the black and blue dress and the LED light birth control gave me a good laugh.
An absurd satirical novella from one of the queens of popcorn thrillers that's good for a few laughs. I knew from the hilarious dedication that this would be a fun listen. As always, Marin Ireland did a fantastic job narrating the story.
Oh my gosh, what great fun! Looking for a short thriller? Something to keep you entertained from start to finish! Something that will have you snorting with laughter?😂🤭
This is your lucky day, book friends. This is THAT audio!
Freida McFadden delivers a super-fast, super-fun romp that once I started, it was impossible to stop! The audio comes in at 2 hours and 39 minutes. The perfect length for me to listen to and unwind after a long day at work.
Favorite's list: Character: Willie, the shirtless house-man🙌😂 Biggest laugh: LED lighting!😂 Narration: Well, Marin Ireland of course!
The last satire I read felt more veiled while this was very throw it in your face but not in a bad way. Honestly, it was a lot of fun and exactly what I was looking for.
The MC is so comically dumb in this story. I think in a regular book I would’ve felt annoyed but here I couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity. And I mean like, over the top absurd and hilarious.
I would totally recommend picking this up if you need a good laugh. It’s quick in typical Freida fashion and an entirely ridiculous ride. I’d love to see more stories written like this.
Pre-read. I wanted something quick as filler and lots of reviews say this is unserious and really funny so it sounds like exactly what I’m looking for 😌
3.5 this is a satire novella and you MUST go into it knowing that since it’s not a normal McFadden book. There are still the twists, but with ridiculous, comical, eye rolling dialogue. None of it really makes sense but it was an entertaining 120 pages.
Was the dress blue and black or white and gold? 🤷🏻♀️
What happens when Freida McFadden pokes fun at thrillers?......Pure chaos, in the BEST way. This novella had me laughing out loud 😂, cringing at wild tropes 🙈, and still gasping at the twists 😱.
Quick, witty, and wildly entertaining. Freida proves she can make you laugh and scream on the very same page. 👏📚🔥
This is a Novella which I read in two days. I love how she can take a character in some everyday situation and literally turn it into a comedy show! Something as simple as shopping in a grocery store turns into a whole production that cracks me up as much as watching a Seinfeld episode.
Yes, it is silly, fun, clever with ludicrous twists. Enjoy the ride and don't take it too serious. This could be called Ms. Clueless Plans The Perfect Murder (maybe). 😂
A woman realizes she’s being stalked by someone who looks exactly like her husband. But it can’t be her husband, he died two weeks ago.
The book starts with a short explanation that this is supposed to be a funny book. Then it quickly tells you some big plot twists. This is definitely a bold way to start a story. This gives the story more room for the main character to be fleshed out and developed. And to be fair, not everything is as it seems and the plot is overflowing with twists to take you by surprise.
The comedy is ridiculous, but it’s to lick your fingers off delicious. If you want logic, this is not the read you’re looking for. But if you want a good laugh and don’t mind absolutely ridiculous soap opera-worthy twists, then you’ll love this.
It’s a short and fast-paced thriller novella with some funny moments and some good twists. Just don’t take it seriously and simply enjoy the ride.
This book was an absolute blast to read! The Widow's Husband's Secret Lie is a witty, laugh-out-loud novella that packs a punch despite its short length. It was totally unserious and absolutely hilarious 😂
The plot follows a widow who’s convinced she’s finally rid of her late husband—until she starts seeing his face everywhere she goes. The writing is sharp, with tons of quirky observations and moments that had me snorting out loud. I loved the ridiculousness of the main character, from her confused misuse of LEDs (😂) to the laugh-out-loud Nickelback references.
While it’s a quick read, it’s packed with enough twists and humour to keep you thoroughly entertained from start to finish. If you're looking for something light, funny, and delightfully odd, this novella is the perfect pick. Four stars for a fun and unforgettable read!
4.5 ⭐️ Omg this was so funny! I laughed out loud so many times! The white/gold and blue/black dress had me dying! And the LED light bulbs and “test” had me rolling!! This was such a fun quick read! I wouldn’t mind reading more like this!
