What would you do if you found a living, alien weapon?
During an invasion on the Las Vegas Strip, a working man named Jake Fox is thrust into a battle beyond imagination, fighting the terrifying shock troops of a sprawling galactic empire.
To protect a terrified child, he seizes a strange weapon of a fallen hero—an ancient, sentient sword—and is catapulted far into the future and across the stars.
Now trapped on a foreign world, he must master his new weapon, uncover the secrets of an ancient civilization, and ultimately find his way home.
But time is running out for humanity, and there's more to the sword than he knows.
Dive into Star Blade, the electrifying brand new sci-fi adventure from USA Today bestselling author J. N. Chaney and Scott Moon, and discover if one ordinary man can reshape the fate of a galaxy.
Jake finalizing his divorce and having a Star Blade thrust on him happened the same day. The day earth was invaded by killing monsters destroying all humans, and Jake helped a young girl escape. While Jake was never a soldier, he couldn’t ignore the child’s need, and this act of sacrifice brought the blade to him when the original owner was killed. Jake sensed the blade was special as he fought, but he didn’t realize the extent of its abilities until it flashed, and Jake was in an entirely new place. Jake is alone, on a strange world with a sword grieving for its previous owner and no idea on how to return to Los Vegas. This is a great way to begin Jake’s life as a Star Blade!
I think the author doesn't know what kind of book they want this to be, or does a poor job of conveying that. Could be sci-fi, but doesn't go into any fundamentals of that. Could be fantasy, but that makes little sense in the context of the story. Could be a mystery, but there is insufficient exposition and intrigue for that to make any sense. The title of the book is Star Blade, yet by the end of it we know basically nothing about a star blade, what it is, or what it's purpose is. Weak.
Another best seller by the dynamic duo, Chaney and Moon! I really enjoyed this first book in the series. The authors quickly developed the storyline and characters to the reader through quick graphics scenes and location changes. You get to watch the main character fight for survival and personal growth in a totally new environment that is alien to him. My apologies! I have to go! Book two is waiting for me!
This was fragmentary and jumbled, like it was written in one sitting and never edited. Made it feel like I was flickering in and out of consciousness. Who’s that? What just happened? What do you mean, a beast? Oh now there’s an explosion. All the context is missing. Most unpleasant.
Well, this is an interesting and strange book. But it’s still worth reading and I’ll definitely continue reading the series. We start in Las Vegas with our main character Jacob Fox getting ready to give his ex-wife their signed divorce papers! Not the best way to start something, but in this case it’s probably best for both. The ex-wife is a young and up-and-comer in Las Vegas with no real interest in having children or even having a husband. Her career id definitely more important. For Jacob, a.k.a., Jake, he’s a UPS Regional Distribution Supervisor having worked his way up from just delivering packages.
So, Jake isn’t a real dynamic guy, but he’s intelligent and still very young. He’s not actually ready for what’s about to happen to him or Las Vegas or Earth, but it’s happening right now. The building his wife works in starts to shake and crumble. Off in the distance he can see what seems to be meteorites hitting other buildings in Las Vegas, only these weren’t just meteorites. They were the landing pods of large monsters looking something like a cross between king crabs and spiders. They were huge and very deadly. Their ships were destroying all the buildings in Vegas while these monsters were hacking their way through the humans trapped in this invasion.
Jake wasn’t any better prepared for what was happening than anyone else. He was trying to find a place to hide when he saw a young girl standing against a wall with one of those monsters headed her way. Jake screamed for her to run, but she was so terrified she just stood there. Jake approached her and grabbed her hand trying to pull her to safety when some guy flashed in front of him. This guy was brandishing a sword that looked like it was charged with electricity. He knew how to use it and began hacking the monsters to pieces. That temporarily save both Jake and the young girl. Jake told her to go, run to some other place while more of the monsters were approaching him and this new stranger. About that time, Jake looked up and saw on the huge monsters on the edge of a building about to jump right on his new friend. Jake tried to warm him, but didn’t get the message in time and his new friend was squashed beneath this new monster. Just before he died, he yelled out something to Jake and Jake was also knocked off his feet. While lying there he saw the sword and it was somehow drawing him towards it.
Jake finally reached the sword and grabbed it while standing. He had no idea how to use a sword but this thing seemed to be talking to him. More of the monsters approached so Jake started swinging. He was successfully in slicing parts off this enemies, but there were way too many coming after him. So, Jake did the sensible thing and that was to run. As he did, he swiped the blade in front of him and it looked like he has sliced open the very air in front of him. But, he turned to see the monsters almost upon him and in fact, one run right into him throwing him back. He landed somewhere not on Earth!
Now is where the story really takes off. Jake still has the sword with him when he comes to, but he doesn’t know where he’s at, but he knows he’s not on Earth any more. He’s in a blue forest with strange plants all around him. He finds a huge tree to settle under while the tries to gather his thoughts. He eventually hears some noises that sound like people that are looking for him. This is where he first meets Leader-ca Con-talor Swizec and Leader-zo Orkel. The former seems to be in-charge while the latter seems to be his Sergeant. After gripping the sword still in his hand, he learns that he can understand what they are saying. He asks them how they know English, but they in-turn asks how he knows their language. Apparently, the sword is proving him with the ability to know the local language.
Anyway, Lead-ca Swizec and his troops have been looking for an assassin in this very forest and that assassin had used a sword just like the one Jake was holding to commit the assassinations. Jake tries to explain what happened to him and why he’s now in possession of what they called a “star blade”. But, they still take him to see the Viceroy who will determine his innocence or guilt and act accordingly. So Jack finds himself on a strange planet with strange blue people who are definitely no humans!
Jake needs to find a way back home to Earth. Only he’s soon to find out that Earth was left behind over 3,000 years ago. Jack has jumped ahead to this future and there is no way back. His adventures are just now beginning. To his credit, Jake does some smart things and handles himself well. There definitely will be more stories about Jake and his desired to find Earth and learn what had happened to it 3,000 years ago.
The next book, “First of the Order”, is already out on Amazon. And actually there are six books so far in this series with the 6th book due in October 2025.
==[Note: As of 12/03/2023, this will not be published on Amazon since I have been banned from posting reviews for some unknown reason. Once the ban is lifted, assuming it does get lifted, I’ll go back and post this to Amazon.]==
Superbly fun. While it's not high literature I enjoyed it a lot and finished before I knew it. Definitely reading the next book!
If you like it epic but intimate, spacey but pugilist. It's a compelling debut. The strength lies in the mentally strong protagonist who is flung forward into a world he does not know.
Chaney excels at world building and tension with clear goals and well written dialogue particularly in scenes with aliens and imagery. Some parts are a little jarring like a bunch of text is missing.
While he stumbles slightly with combat in the climactic scene and the swordplay description is a bit lacklustre it will satisfy sci fi nerds with its' epic nature.
It will leave you eager for the next book!

I'm not exactly sure what that title means, but I strongly suspect that this is going to be another fun Chaney/Moon tale. Jake is a strong character, just another normal guy who finds himself outclassed and all alone. It will be interesting to see where his journey back to Earth takes him.
This kind of grew on me. The narration by James Anderson Foster was good, but it took awhile for it to fit the personality of the main character. Overall it's a great story of a guy displaced in time, who gradually learns that those he comes to defend may not be what they seem. It's a good start to the series. I'm in.
A fairly decent galactic adventure story. Probably worth reading more in the series, just not right away, the story is not a bad one, but there's a lot of extraneous information included that doesn't really contribute much to the story. Perhaps most of that info will become relevant as the story progresses.
I am usually very critical of books because most are average to below average in my opinion. Once in a while I come across a gem, and again, IMO this is one of them. Great characters, fast moving, lots of action and the author has taken the time to develop the characters. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next!
This book makes a good start for an interesting series. Unlike alot of books it tries to fill in the backstory so you don’t wonder what is going on. With lots of action and suspense and intrigue it will have you looking forward to the next book.
This was an awesome story. I highly recommend reading this book I cannot wait until the second release I'm only sorry that it is not now. I will be preordering the second release To continue Jake's story
There's a reason I follow J.N. Chaney. His stories are always guaranteed to be thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining! I can't wait for the next installment in the series!
Likes , effective story line , flow was effective, not the least challenging to read ! Result great read I'm 83 , been a reader of sci- fi since I was 12. Great job , will read more by U ,Scott .
I'm amazed that these authors can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that they never stops writing. Their books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
I normally, only like Series. J N Chaney has written a number of good books. This series, however, has been a challenge. It is interesting to a point, but most of the story and actions are just not connecting. Conflicts are not ending and moved to another conflict with no explanation. The storyline is jagged and not consistent. Alien descriptions are vague. Motives are even more vague. I'll stick with it out of curiosity, but that may fade soon.
3.5 Solid writing, although I did spot some holes, which didn't make sense. .. Witty. Tackles the hard issues of the galaxy. Will probably read the second..
