In Bloom

Rate this book
Visionary writer Michael W. Conrad and Eisner Award-winning illustrator John J. Pearson present a boundary-pushing science fiction saga evocative of The Last of Us, Blade Runner, and Annihilation.

43% of the cells within a healthy human body belong to something other than the human host. Microbiomes, invasive bacteria, fungal and viral agents, and something else, something... more.

When the BLOOM happened, humanity was changed forever, transformed by symbiotic fungal megasystems that infected their bodies.

Some affected people grew new body parts, some found their personalities changed in radical new ways, while others reported contact with some... other intelligence not their own.

In this revolutionary new world, Agent Spears finds himself investigating a series of mysterious murders, a chain of violence that leads him to a terrifying question on which the fate of every living being rests.

Visionary writer Michael W. Conrad (Wonder Woman, Bizarre Adventures) and Eisner Award-winning illustrator John J. Pearson (The Infernals) present a boundary-pushing science fiction saga that will change the way you see the human body.

This is one of the best stuff I’ve read in the last years.
Storywise and artwise too. Smart, extraordinary, beautifully illustrated. Loved every panel.

Really on the fence between a 3 or 4. On one hand the art is exceptional and the ride is great. But the end is meh and awkwardly echoes some certain philosophies I don’t think are intentional but on the other hand how could you not see it and not try to change it unless it’s intentional. It goes into a message about the struggle of those who cant or majorly struggle to deal with the world changing around them and goes on a political conspiracy where the bad guys take over the government. It's almost hard to not see any implications about certain right-wing talking points about the woke left. But then it also criticizes the impacts of the Afghan War and the struggles of military veterans forced to fight in a war that are left scarred and brought back to a world they don't belong or fit into.
Regardless of the intention of it's end and the message it sets forth this is a great noir with oodles of bio-organic body horror. Its a noir focusing on conspiracy more than murder as the cop MC investigates the mystery of the Lotus. It touches a bit on society's haves and have-nots and planned riots and murders sort of like a psyop, I think it’s called a false flag?, which I found nice and engaging to read.
The art is amazing and the real draw. It's mostly paint, or digital paint, with some details in a simple cartoon style. The coloring really blends the more cartoony bits from standing out. It's just gorgeous and this beautiful slick slightly grotesque medium that really sells the body horror of those who Bloomed.

Gorgeous art and story. A compelling story for sure, and the hilarious looks at "blooms" in pop culture and media are spot on social commentary. Thoroughly enjoyed and recommend.
