In a chilling, intensely eerie new novel of suspense from the New York Times bestselling author of The Camp and The Babysitter, a woman haunted by unreliable psychic visions must decide how far to trust herself when it comes to stopping a killer.
Sometimes, a bad, bad feeling creeps over Veronica Quick. It happened on her tenth birthday, when a voice filled her Don’t go in the water. That day, she nearly drowned while swimming with her friends, one of whom was seriously injured.
Since then, Ronnie has tried to turn off her premonitions. After all, not every vision comes true. She’s made a fool of herself before, predicting things that didn’t transpire. And she’s still shaken by disturbing images tied to that day at the pond.
But this new vision is different. This one won’t be ignored. There’s a clearing in the woods, and a woman, strangled to death, her hands bloody and torn.
The body is found just as Ronnie predicted, and suddenly she’s seeing glimpses of more victims, even as she clashes with a skeptical police detective from her past. But Ronnie sees just enough to know there’s a killer out there, stalking, strangling, circling everyone she knows in an ever-tightening web.
But it’s the part she doesn’t yet see that is the most terrifying . . .
Nancy Bush is a New York Times bestselling author of over forty novels, including the River Glen Series, Nowhere Series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Wicked Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Lisa Jackson, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Lisa Jackson and Rosalind Noonan.
Nancy has called Oregon her home all of her life. She grew up in a small logging community and after graduating from high school, attended Oregon State University where she met her husband, Ken and graduated with a degree in nutrition. They married a few years after graduation and together they have one daughter. After working in banking and the travel business, with her daughter still in diapers, Nancy read an article in Time Magazine about young mothers who, once the last diaper was changed and the final bottle was washed, pulled out their typewriters and wrote romance novels for the then expanding market. Nancy convinced her sister, Lisa Jackson, that they should try their hand at writing.
After writing several successful romance novels such as Lady Sundown, Miracle Jones, Jesse’s Renegade and Scandal’s Darling and a stint writing for one of ABC’s top-rated daytime shows: All My Children, she turned her attention to writing thrillers for Kensington Publishing. Today, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.
In her free time Nancy enjoys walking, working on jigsaw and crossword puzzles and hanging out with family and friends. When she and Ken aren’t visiting their daughter and grandchildren in Southern California, Nancy is busy working on her next book!
This was my first experience with anything written by Nancy Bush. Overall I enjoyed the story and can see me reading more from her. The thing keeping me from giving it 5 ⭐ is it's a bit all over the place, there's a lot of characters and a lot going on. I think maybe too much. I do love the concept of the story overall and my heart hurts for our MC, she dealt with a lot!
I listened to this as an audiobook and I think the narrator was fabulous. I loved her voice and it suited the story and characters well.
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review.
Amazing! I have not read this author before, but if this is how she usually writes, well, she definitely has a new follower!!!
This one tugged me in with the title ‘The Psychic’, and then held onto me throughout… many times spinning me out of control as I tried to figure out who was behind all of this… why, and how?!?
Veronica (Ronnie) Quick has been having visions since she was ten. As a young child she saw something terrible that actually came true, and she was helpless to prevent it… as a matter of fact, she was right in the middle of it all! And she’s never truly gotten over it… and one of the people involved almost died… and was left forever injured…
Now, many years later, she’s working as an assistant at her father’s law firm… and the visions are back with a vengeance. Unfortunately, they are not always correct. But, when she keeps having the same one over and over, she feels that she MUST alert the police… but they’re not sure how they can possibly help as she doesn’t know WHO it is, WHERE they are, or WHAT happened…
And then she runs into an old friend… who actually has a painting of the scene in her vision!
And this is where all the crazy action begins… and does not let up until the very last page!
Old friends. New acquaintances. Cops. Families. Extended families. And… the crazies that live and breathe among us….
This one deserves ALL THE STARS!!! 🌟🌟 🌟🌟🌟✨✨✨✨✨💫💫💫💫💫

A very strong four star read! This was my introduction to Nancy Bush and it didn't disappoint. I devoured this book. Although I guessed at the killer early on, it still kept me wondering and waiting to see where the story would go. I'll definitely be diving into more of Nancy Bush's catalog after this read.
The premise of the book sounded interesting, and this was another "new to me" author so I decided to take a chance.
This book had a little bit of a different take on the police "psychic" route in the fact that when we meet our FMC Veronica "Ronnie" Quick, she doesn't really have a handle on her visions. Apparently, she has had them most of her life (with a traumatic incident happening when she was 10 years old) but she has done her best to stomp them down. For whatever reason, it felt like something was unleashed and she is basically bombarded with all kinds of visions in this storyline.
The beginning of the book was a little confusing for me as I was trying to figure out who was who and what exactly was going on. The storyline is fairly chaotic and you get the feeling that Ronnie herself doesn't really understand what is going on. There is a LOT of information thrown at you in this storyline and not all of it was necessary.
In the end, even though everything wraps up nicely, it does push the boundary of believability with exactly HOW everything was tied together.
The narration was done by Dara Rosenberg and she is the type of narrator that seems to grow on you. I wasn't too fond of her in the beginning, but by the end of the book I felt more comfortable with her portrayal of the characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing | Brilliance Audio for the opportunity to listen to and review this Audio ARC. This book will be out for publication on September 30, 2025.
The Psychic is such a good mystery crime story for early halloween vibes and I loved that it had the whole small-town-secrets thing going on. The unexpected twists were on point and I very much enjoyed the cute little romance arc that tied into the story.
For a crime story like this, timing is so important. A mystery can so quickly feel off or forced when clues and twists are revealed at the wrong time. The Psychic, in my opinion, nails this and kept me hooked until the very end.
I loved how the more the puzzle pieces become visible, the more entangled everything seemed to be. And everything leads back to the past the FMC tried to run from. The author did a great job at constructing the story and making sure that everything ultimately tied together.
The characters are realistic in a way that's very approachable and maybe it’s my own openness towards the paranormal but the psychic aspect wasn’t even weird to me. I thought it was a great tool to not only give Ronnie an edge but also put the people she encountered into contrast.
One thing I didn’t love, personally, were the many POVs. They weren’t redundant and made the story work, I just can’t help but think there might have been a better solution, as the choice of who gets a POV felt a bit random at times. And didn’t really do all that much for giving Ronnie any more contour than we got from her perspective.
I really liked the audio version, the narration was easy to listen to and overall, the writing style was good and worked well for the book.
Thank you to NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing and Nancy Bush for an ALC of this book
The latest book in the River Glen series with ties to Deception Bay. Nancy Bush likes to use extravagant words. A logophile or a wordsmith. Thematic writing skills…oppressive sensation…recombobulated…incessant…sporadic serious accidents…deciduous trees…momentary respite…possible idiopathic neural abnormality…extra sensory…anathema…lackadaisically
Based on the book description, I expected Ronnie to work outside the law because of her implausible abilities and poor reputation with law enforcement. However, there was more law enforcement involvement than I anticipated. Even when Ronnie was acting independently, the story still felt dominated by police-like questioning and interrogation techniques. I typically don't enjoy thrillers set in the law enforcement realm and wouldn't have reached for this had I realized.
Due to Ronnie's sporadic and uncontrollable psychic visions, her life is understandably overstimulating. However, this chaotic nature makes for a disjointed reading experience. Many plot points seem designed for shock value rather than narrative coherence. The story becomes even more difficult to follow when perspectives shift abruptly mid-chapter.
Ronnie's character regressed throughout the story. While she displayed maturity during Shauna's hospitalization, she reverted to childlike behavior when simply asked about her DNA. Ronnie's unsettling fixation on Sloan originated from a random vision she experienced as a teenager and persisted throughout the story. This behavior came across as creepy rather than romantic. Even setting that aside, their relationship lacked development. They initially disliked each other and felt uncomfortable in each other's presence, then abruptly became a couple without any meaningful buildup or chemistry to justify this transition.
Narrator Dara Rosenberg expertly captured this emotional rollercoaster, particularly excelling at conveying Ronnie's panic.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
I’ve had my eye on Nancy Bush for a while, and this cover is a stunner. If psychic visions are your thing, this one lands just in time for spooky season. 👻
Ronnie Quick is the kind of character you root for right away. She’s charmingly flawed, juggling visions, skeptics, and that awkward space between 'I swear I’m not making this up' and 'maybe I should book a therapy session.' Her visions are like cosmic prank calls, and you can’t help but cheer her on.
Each vision Ronnie has is a puzzle piece that almost clicks. The detective she butts heads with adds sharp banter and a spark of chemistry. Still, it’s Ronnie’s messy, honest heart that holds everything together.
There are a lot of characters swirling around. The generational angle adds a juicy, layered twist, and I was so hooked I didn’t even care when I lost track of who was who.
“The Psychic” is eerie, moody, and just a little bit addictive. I’m giving it four stars, even though supernatural isn’t usually my thing. The psychic twists totally pulled me in, so if you like your suspense with a supernatural kick, this is a perfect October pick.
Thanks to the author and Brilliance Publishing for providing this gifted audiobook via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
It's one of those Could've -been great but was more chaotic than coherent. A girl inherits psychic capabilities from her family but are triggered alive when she's 10. They're young friends at the local waterhole having fun one summer, but an accident she has a bad premonition of, happens and therein start her visions. The revisit to her hometown when she's an adult is spurred by a divorce, some visions of a dead person and dog barking I wanted to like it so much but there were too many characters, too many happenings all at once that made it like a circus and I couldn't focus on following the main vein of Ronnie trying to solve the murders. Also her working with the law enforcement was weird. It would've made more thrilling had she worked parallel to them. But it was OK read, I guess “4 stars for the alertful doggo” Follow me on: Email🌻 Bookbub 🌻 Twitter🌻 Instagram🌻 Blog🌻 Facebook🌻 Amazon 🌻
Well let me tell you about this book called The Psychic by Nancy Bush about scared the socks off me. I started reading it thinking it was going to be some goofy ghost talk mess, but no, this one hit different.
This gal Veronica Quick keeps getting these spooky feelings like her brain was tuned to some creepy radio station playing nothing but bad news. She heard a voice tell her Don’t go in the water when she was just a kid, and sure enough, she near about drowned and her friend got tore up too.
Now years later, she is trying real hard to act normal, but visions come creeping back like mold on bread. And what she sees this time isn't no kiddie dream. It’s a woman in the woods, all dead and messy, and she turned out to be right about it.
She keeps seeing more bodies too, and she kept butting heads with some hard nosed detective who probably thinks she has done lost her marbles. But jokes on him, because she saw what he didn't. And lemme tell you, if I ever got one of them visions, I’d be calling somebody fast and telling them come handle it because I sure wouldn’t be out there investigating it myself.
This book kept me reading steady and curious, wondering what was gonna happen next. It was creepy, twisty, and had me shaking my head thinking folks never learn. But she did what she had to do, and I respect that.
Review of *The Psychic* by Nancy Bush ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 stars) **Audiobook Narration: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ by Dara Rosenberg** **Thanks to Brilliance Audio and NetGalley for the advanced copy.**
This was an intense and engaging thriller-mystery that kept me hooked from the start. Ronnie is a psychic, but her visions aren’t always accurate — and in a town that already sees her as a bit unhinged, that doesn’t help her case. Sloane, a police officer temporarily filling in for someone on leave, is skeptical when Ronnie comes to him with disturbing visions of a woman crying in a meadow… and then dead.
At first, Sloane doesn’t know what to make of her, but as Ronnie's predictions start to come true, things get real — fast.
With a manipulative cult leader targeting young women, Ronnie’s own messy divorce, and the fact that the bodies piling up seem to all be connected to her, there's a *lot* going on in this small town — and it all unfolds with just the right mix of suspense and emotion.
I absolutely loved this one. The pacing was tight, the mystery was layered, and the stakes kept rising. The audiobook narration by Dara Rosenberg was *outstanding* — her performance added even more depth and urgency to the story.
Highly recommend for fans of intense thrillers with a paranormal twist!
This was a new to me author and Nancy Bush drew me in with the cover and the fact that Veronica, Ronnie, Quick doesn't always have accurate premonitions, sometimes what she visions doesn't come true. She was ten years old when the visions started coming to her, but now she works as an assistant at her father's law firm and the visions have come back. Not only have they came back, but they play out the same scene. So she goes to the police with just the fact that *something* is happening, but she doesn't have a location, a name, or what is exactly happening. Top that off she was to tell officer Sloan, who was a kid she grew up with and who the visions told her she would marry. Officer Sloan was not exactly sure if he believed her, after all what actual proof does she have? Ronnie is confident she will be pointed in the right direction to find a possible murderer or at least stop the murder from happening!
The Psychic is multi POV so you add in that layer to this thriller and mystery.
🎧🎙️: Narrated by Dara Rosenberg Pub Date: Sept 30, 2025 | Brilliance Publishing | via NetGalley
The narration here blew me away, 5🌟 performance. Dara Rosenberg switched between voices so naturally. Voices were child, male, female, with ease, without ever overdoing it. Every character had their own sound, and it honestly reminded me of January LaVoy in the best way. She even had me anxious at points just from how intense the delivery was.
As for the story, I was hooked from the very beginning. Multiple storylines ran at once but were never confusing, and Ronni’s internal monologue was a highlight for me. I’m a pretty logical person who doesn’t really believe in psychics, but this book managed to pull me in anyway!
Bonus: “booblets” 😂
A strong thriller with narration that absolutely elevated the experience. Highly recommend the audio!
Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for the advance listening copy!
Many thanks to Kensington Publishing for gifting me a physical copy of the latest book by Nancy Bush. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4.5 stars!
Veronica (Ronnie) Quick sometimes gets premonitions. It first happened on her 10th birthday, when she heard a voice tell her not to go in the water. She ignored it and nearly drowned while swimming with her friends. Not all of her premonitions come true, but her latest one shows a woman, strangled, in the woods. And that's just one victim she sees.
Not sure how this is my first Nancy Bush book, but it definitely won't be my last. This one caught my attention from the beginning and kept me guessing until the end. I loved Ronnie's character - I was rooting for her when no one believed her, and also liked her relationship with her childhood crush who has grown up to be the detective she works with. There are a lot of characters to keep up with, but it's addictive. The perfect book to read during spooky season!
I want to thank Goodreads for an ARC of this book. First of all I love Nancy Bush and I had high hopes. Unfortunately this story just didn't hit. 2.5 rounded up to 3
Ronnie is a psychic who has been having visions since she was a child, a trait inherited from her mother who she has presumed was dead since she was 4. On her birthday as a child she had a vision of something terrible happening at a pond and what she saw partly came true. When she grows up it seems all the people that were at the pond that day she is having visions of them dying. Who is doing this to them is it all connected? However. there are even more characters introduced and soo many people and stories going on its hard to keep up with and the story jumps around too much. The ending was rushed and that was that. Long story for little pay off.
*Disclosure: I received a free advance review copy of this book from the publisher.
Sure, the story isn’t pitch-perfect; there are clichés sprinkled throughout like sugar on a horror cake, but they’re not bothersome enough to make me roll my eyes or sigh in exasperation. In fact, those familiar tropes felt almost comforting in their predictability, a nod to the genre’s playbook. And let’s take a moment to appreciate the cover art—a woman peering through shattered glass. Does she remind anyone else of Anya Taylor-Joy? Or is that just my imagination running wild?
In the end, I liked The Psychic quite a bit. It was a true page-turner, an engaging story perfect for anyone on the hunt for a gripping thriller. So, if you’re ready to leap into the unknown.
"...a woman haunted by unreliable psychic visions must decide how far to trust herself when it comes to stopping a killer."
I didn't finish this one. It sounded like a book I should love! A mysterious killer, psychic visions, a distrustful cop- sign me up! However, after getting a third of the way through, I gave up. The story, the characters, nothing clicked with me. I usually struggle to the end, but I was just too disinterested in this one. Others seem to have enjoyed it though, so maybe it's for you!
I received a free audiobook copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.
This is the first book I've read by Nancy Bush. I'm definitely going to look into her other books. The action just kept coming! The story is told in two timeframes, when Roni was 10 years old and in the present day. I don't really believe in psychics but after reading this book I definitely wouldn't want to have any psychic powers! That's just too much pressure!! I enjoyed the audio version which was narrated by Dara Rosenberg. She's a new narrator to me but she did a great job!
I'd like to thank Netgalley, Brilliance Audio and the author, Nancy Bush for the opportunity to enjoy this book early in exchange for my review.
📖 Bookish Thoughts This book definitely kept me entertained from start to finish, but there was too much going on. It was hard to keep track of all the storylines. Even harder to remember everyone, especially with so many shifting POVs. And our FMC tested my patience more than once.
The ending also wrapped up in a way that felt a little too far fetched. But I was curious enough to see how it would all end.
🖤 What to Expect • Psychic FMC • Serial killer mystery • Small town • Multiple POVs _ _ _
⭐ Final Score: 3.5 stars 🎧 Audio Score: 4.5 stars 📅 Pub Date: September 30, 2025 📝 Thank you to Brilliance Publishing and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
I liked the book and the main character Ronnie who tried to solve a murder based on his visions. The audiobook reader was great and enhanced my reading experience.
I think the book suffered slightly, from too large cast of characters. The book could have been divided into two parts and I would have liked to get to know Ronnie's life over several books.
Thanks to Brilliance Publishing and NetGalley for the early review copy!
The murder-mystery setup, combined with the main character, Ronnie's, unreliable psychic visions, maintained a layer of intrigue and suspense as the dual timelines connected the past and the present. The dynamic between Ronnie and police detective Sloan, with their shared past on the fateful day he resuscitated her, added an interesting romantic subplot. Fans of paranormal suspense storylines will enjoy this book.
The Psychic is an engaging, spooky read that delivers what it promises: a mix of supernatural apprehension and grounded suspense. For fans of thrillers with paranormal undercurrents, it offers a satisfying balance of unease and intrigue. I’d give it 3.5 to 4 stars—a compelling addition to Bush’s work and a solid pick for a late-night read.
I have to give this book 3 stars. The narrator was great. I loved the storyline and the main characters.. but, there were so many side characters that I was confused a lot of the times.
Many thanks to Net Galley and Brilliance Publishing for an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Brilliance Publishing for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
I had never read anything by this author and now I will check out more. This was a entertaining mystery.. Creepy Halloween ish.. great definitely recommend.
I normally like Nancy Bush. But I did not care for this one.
The book was confusing. Ronnie seemed confused about her abilities. If she could not figure them out, how could the reader. I made it through 2 chapters and gave up. I skipped to the last 2 chapters.
This is one of the first books I have read by this author and it was a good choice. I really enjoyed the story and I like all the characters. I would recommend it.
