My Queen,
I know what you think of me, and I want you to know that I'm not like that. I know we've known each other our entire lives, but, I've kept this demon living under my skin hidden, I didn't want you knowing about it. I've always tried to give you everything you wanted and needed, but I don't know what happened, that man, he was so breakable, just so frail and weak.
Everything changed that moment I first thirsted for blood. I had broken free of my father's reigns that God-awful night, but we all know the truth, I was born to be this. I was born to be a monster, a fighter a most of all...a King.
I know that you want me to take my rightful place on the throne I was born to sit on, but you don't understand, that once I sit on it, I'm not going to come back willingly. I know I'm going to end up making you bed, make you crumble. I'm going to ensure that you know exactly who you belong to and you never forget who you belong to. Who exactly my daughter belongs to.
I know that as you read this letter, your bones are going to rattle with both fear and excitement. But, you have to know my love, the battle has only begun.
You need to give the following message to your fiance, and then, my love, expect the unexpected.
The wrath of hell is just the beginning. The King will return and those who are damned will be shown no mercy.
You've declared war and I accept. Justice will be served. And the broken queen will be mine once again.
Your Damned King
The Broken Queen is the first book in the Broken series by Harper Ray. And like all of Harper's books that I've read, this one delivered. I loved every delicious moment of it and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series and find out what happens next and where our characters go from here. But Raven and Slade, oh my, they are a couple to be reckoned with and their resilience and determination is admirable.
The Broken Queen is the story of Queen Raven, and her strength, and resilience is stunning, even when she is at her lowest and feeling weak and useless you can still see just how strong she really is and just how resilient she is. And I love how we get to see flashbacks to the most critical points in Raven's life and then back to the present.
Currently, in the present, we find that Queen Raven lives under the rule of her father King Lars Alston. When her mother passes away, her father announces that Raven is now the new reigning Queen at her mother's funeral. This announcement takes Raven, those around her, and her people by sheer surprise. No one had expected King Lars to announce that his daughter was now the new reigning Queen.
In one of the early flashbacks, we watch as King Lars takes a young Raven who is maybe 12 or so, to the dungeon for her Queen Training. What Raven doesn't know is that in this version of King Lar's version of Queen Training, she would end up having to torture in some very cruel and unusual ways and some difficult punishments. This includes forcing Raven to shoot, no murder the man she had been torturing. Then King Lars turns and leaves Raven in the room with the deceased man for days or maybe weeks, she has no light, no outside contact with anyone with the exception of whomever enacted the torture.
Raven is cut up, beaten by grown men who should know better, malnourished, and she's dehydrated. She finally finds the opportunity to get out of the dungeon and she takes it. While she's trying to escape, she finds an unlocked door and without any hesitation, she enters the room, shuts the door behind her, and tries to quiet her breathing.
“Who are you?” Raven asks realizing that she's not alone in that room. And it's here that we meet our MMC Slade. Slade not only helps Raven escape the dungeons safely he also helps her get back to her room safely.
Returning to the present day, we come to see that Raven and Slade have gotten even closer and actually are the best of friends. Eventually, their friendship moved into them becoming a couple and then we learn about Julianna... Julianna who is their 4-year-old daughter.
During another flashback, this time one of Slade in prison, where he's been falsely accused and he is eventually exonerated. But, while in prison, he builds up a lot of anger and resentment and it is all pointed towards Raven and King Lars. He blames both of them for his imprisonment.
Through this book, we see so many flashbacks, trials, tribulations, ups and downs. We get to go on such a wild ride through this book and yet it is such a gratifying ride. But, you have to pay close attention as you read, you can't skip over any little detail. Everything in this book, even the smallest little detail is important in the grand scheme of things.
There were so many times that I was so mad, sad, happy, and oh so much more. I went through such a roller-coaster of emotions. But that ending, the ending didn't leave me wanting for anything. Any question I may have left unanswered by the end, it was finally answered by the end of the epilogue.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. Harper Ray has masterfully crafted another amazing first book in a start of a series and I can't wait to read the next book in the series and see what happens next and see where our characters go from here. This series is going to be a wild ride.
