Haunted Hearts #2

Warmer, Colder

Rate this book
In this seductive sapphic ghost dark romance, the homoerotic yearning of Jennifer’s Body meets the possessive witchiness of The Craft, all wrapped in the sharp commentary on girlhood from Mean Girls and the suspense of Pretty Little Liars.

There’s nothing more dangerous than the truth, except the pretty little lies we tell ourselves.

Stasi
Becca Murphy was always meant to be mine. She betrayed me and buried her love for me deep within her deceptive heart, but she never anticipated me digging myself out of that grave with a singular desire: her. Now that I’m back, I’m determined to drag her demons into the light. I might be dead, but I’m not letting Becca go. This time, she’ll see the truth: it’s always been me.

Becca
One drunken night shattered my carefully crafted facade, leaving me suffocating beneath the wreckage of my so-called perfect life. I thought death would grant me peace, but instead, I’m haunted by the woman who knows my deepest secret. As I cling to the crumbling illusion of perfection, Stasi sees me for what I truly am—a goddamn mess. Do I cling to my web of lies, or do I dare to free fall into her tempting embrace?

Screaming, crying, throwing up. This book is nothing short of a masterpiece. These characters and their stories will stay with me in my mind forever.

I was so excited to receive an ARC and to be able to read this book early. I was so intrigued and wanted to know Becca’s story, and this did not disappoint. I’m not kidding when I say this book will have you on a roller coaster of emotions, as you follow the two MCs Becca and Stasi. You can literally feel the raw emotion seeping through each page as you follow both characters separately and together through life and death. The way these characters are just so incredibly relatable and realistic, but also heartbreaking, heartwarming and healing for so many different reasons. They are imperfectly perfect in every way. Their dynamic together was incredible, so much tension, and so many layers within their story together. So much raw emotion. I absolutely adored that none of it felt rushed, the time line for both the events within the book and for the characters love story was very well paced. The fact that both characters were very hot and cold towards each other throughout meant that none of it felt rushed or glossed over. Alexia touches on so many difficult topics in this book but I think all were handled and executed extremely well. Also you guys you do get some great detailed spice, a bloody bopping good fisting time if you will.

I don’t want to go into detail about what happens in the book because I think this is a book best not spoiled. Do not take the content warnings at the start of the book lightly, they are there for a reason. I am the type of reader who has no triggers, but this story was difficult to read for even me, and that’s purely because of how well it was written. You do get a HEA but not in the traditional sense.

The storyline and plots were absolutely well written. All I gotta say. IM IN LOVE 😍

I both liked and disliked it…hate is a strong word. I have a lot of mixed feelings that can’t be contained, but I will try. I love a dark sapphic romance as much as the next person and the paranormal aspect pulled me in, but here we go.

I deeply sympathized with Stasi, and they were both just such complex characters. I wanted to both hug Stasi and keep my distance at the same time. I was just in tears and so frustrated over it. And Becca? I also sympathized with her and everything that happened was heartbreaking, but at the same time, I just wanted to scream. I know dark romances are usually toxic, but the constant hot and cold, push-pull, weird pet names, and cringey dirty talk combined was too much. I strongly recommend that readers view the trigger warnings before diving in.

Ok I think I’m just obsessed with Alexia Onyx now. I freaking loved Come Out, Come Out so I immediately signed up for an arc of her newest release Warmer, Colder which features the Becca and Stasi. These two were childhood best friends but it ended on a sour note. Years later Stasi is back to make Becca see how perfect they are together. But life is cruel and these plans take a devastating turn for both of them.

Alexia’s writing is just incredible. She handles dark and heavy topics like violence against women, sexual assault, and suicide with gentle hands while also not romanticizing it. She allows her characters to show all the sharp emotions and she doesn’t shy away from the messy and rough which I greatly appreciate. In Warmer, Colder we as the reader are taken on these characters journeys to accepting who they are inside and out, learning how to love themselves as they are now, allowing themselves to just be, experiencing grief for themselves/each other/and those around them, and finally uncovering past wounds they have both caused each other so they can finally heal and be together.

What to expect:
Dark & Sapphic
Ghosts & haunting
Stalking
Fisting
Spitting
Obsessive & toxic love
Slow burn (one second they burn hot then the next they are cold)
Trauma and learning to accept touch/pleasure after it
Remember the Bop It toy? (That’s all I’ll say iykyk)

TW/CW: normally I make my own list or use the list the author provides if it’s a good comprehensive list but Alexia always goes above and beyond with her content list and it’s way too long for me to list them all here so I highly encourage all future readers of this book to check it out before reading. Also just like with book one, Alexia has even broken it down chapter by chapter when it comes to the possible triggers/content warnings (this is located at the end of the book). I will give out just a few big ones here: homophobia (both internalized & externalized), self harm, suicidal ideation & attempts (one of those attempts being successful), sexual assault (on page/flashbacks), toxic relationships, PTSD, on page murder, on page violence towards women

First thing I just want to say is, this book is dark and covers some heavy topics. So please read the trigger warnings before reading this book.

That being said, I did really enjoy this book. Because of the triggers I did need to take a break at the 30% mark (but that’s not a reflection on the book, just personal). It’s well written and covers the difficult subjects well.

Aside from the hard topics, it does cover coming out and self discovery. And I love the growing relationship between Stasi and Becca (even if it doesn’t start off the best way 😂).

This book is written in first person with 2x POVs. It’s a dark romance with a lot of mental health rep, body positivity, paranormal, coming out, stalker, second chance. 13x spicy scenes.

this book had so much potential!! im not saying i hated it but the hot and cold (yes the title is literally warmer colder i know) was extremely repetitive and the pacing felt super all over the place. i loved the idea much more than the execution and i find myself not motivated to pick this one back up.

i would like to say a huge thank you though to the author for sending me an ARC of this title! while i did not finish it i think this book could be very entertaining for others!!

Alexia does it again y’all 👏 I absolutely LOVED the second installment in the Haunted Hearts series and I truly have fallen in love with Alexia’s writing style. On top of being a story full of spice and tension, it was also bursting at the seams with mental health representation and personal growth topics. Check triggers because this book definitely deals with heavy topics! 🖤

Warmer, Colder is a sapphic dark romance between Becca and Stasi and it is SO GOOD. I personally was a huge fan of Stasi’s character specifically because she’s witchy, she’s a st@lker, she’s dominant and I just love her!! Becca is def giving sad girl energy (for good reason) and I think anyone who’s been through tough things in life will find themselves aligning with Becca in a really powerful way. The way this author writes mental health is truly masterful and I absolutely love how both of her published books have plots that revolve around death and beyond. It’s so unique and really makes you think about life.

Overall, absolutely devoured this and truly can’t wait for Light As A Feather 🪶

I was an arc reader for Warmer, Colder, and I think that title is extremely fitting for Stasi and Becca. They are very back and forth almost the entire book.

Some things I loved:
- This book is SAPPHIC
- The mental health representation
- Plus size representation
- Stalking
- Witchy vibes
- Love in the afterlife (unconventional HEA)
- Healing trauma

What I didn't like:
- The repetitive nature of toxicity from both FMCs. This tends to be pretty accurate for real-life toxic relationships, but in this book, it felt frustrating.

I loved so many aspects of this book, but I couldn't help feeling exasperated by the constant back and forth.

What an interesting experience.
I will start out by saying I did like it overall.
It was definitely a roller coaster.
I loved stasi .. she was funny, strong and fierce.
Becca however, I felt bad not liking her when I should be having empathy for her but it was so hard for me. She pissed me off so bad 80% of the book.
I feel like I was angry most of the book and it was hard for me to see reason.

The last like 15% was nothing but spice. I was like oh shit lol that took a smutty turn haha

I will say I applaud Alexia for being able to write such emotion and traumatic shit. Definitely check your trigger warning because some of it was really hard for me to read.

Again overall, the storyline was good and it made sense after reading Come Out Come Out.

This book wasn’t for me. Not much plot and very repetitive. Becca just denies she’s a lesbian the entire time but then proceeds to get sexual with Stassi the entire book. I feel like they made Becca denying her sexuality and Stassi’s obsession the entire plot after the initial events. I couldn’t wait for this book to be over

“Heaven isn’t a place, it’s a person. Everything about her is ecstasy, and she’s all mine.”

screaming, crying & throwing up. i’m obsessed to say the least. i have never read anything like this before and i was hooked from the beginning to the end. is truly was nothing short of a masterpiece. this book brought out so many emotions in me, i didn’t realize how much id cry honestly. you can feel the raw emotion between Becca and Stasi. these characters were so relatable and realistic. but also heartbreaking and heartwarming. i also feel like it can be healing for people as well, for different reasons. this book touches so many difficult topics but it was executed & handled so well. nothing was glossed over.

“I learned very early on that if I didn’t define myself, other people would, and they’d do it in a much harsher way. So, I took ownership of all the parts of my identity that could either be turned into weapons or shields. If I shaped my sexuality, my womanhood, my fatness, then nobody else could make them into things that would hurt me.”
^^i love her with my whole heart 🥹

Stasi: i loved her so much. she’s brave, forward and isn’t afraid to just be herself. she’s a woman who knows her mind and knows what she wants. she feels sexy in her own skin and has never questioned her sexuality. but we also see her suffer and build her walls. all she wants is the person she has always loved & she has a continued battle with herself, debating if she wants revenge for all the pain she endured or forgiveness & love. one of my favorite things about her is she loves fully and unapologetically. she never gave up on Becca.

“As long as we both shall haunt.” 🥹🖤

Becca: i feel Becca is someone people would either love or hate. and i loved her. i feel she’s real, her situation is real and can be relatable to many people. it’s extremely hard to be who you are when the entire world expects you to be a “perfect” person. her journey to break free from who she thought she should be and embrace her true self—tho was slow—was so beautiful and satisfying when she finally got there.
——so many tears were shed for her & her family.

these two were far from perfect but they’re so raw in their flawed beauty. these characters are so special to me.

Compared to all other genres, there are so few good sapphic romances written. There are even less good, dark sapphic romances. I didn’t know what was in store for me when I started reading this book, but I was excited to read it. I can honestly say that I was not disappointed. This book was definitely dark. There is a long list of content warnings, so please read them. This story has so much pain and hurt, there were times I had to take a moment and very little bothers me. I think what hit me the hardest was the internalized homophobia and Becca’s battle with a comphet world. This book deals with death, noncon situations, degradation in a non sexy way and a sexy way, and love that transcends life. The characters are amazing and so well written. They also showing two very different queer experiences that are so real and show how not every queer person has the same experience.

Stasi is what most young, queer, curvy women wish they could be. She is strong and confident. She feels sexy in her own skin and she does not question her sexuality. But her strength came at a price. She suffered and built up her walls. All that she wants is the one person she has ever loved. A large part of the story takes place with Stasi being dead and suffering once more because of who she loves. She battles with herself with whether she wants revenge for all the pain she has endured or forgiving and loving.

Many people will absolutely despise Becca. As one of my friends says, she is so deep in the closet, she’s in Narnia. But Becca’s character hit me so hard. It is so hard to be who you are when the entire world expects you to be that “perfect” person. So many queer people, including myself, hide for years so that they can be what everyone expects them to be. There were so many times I saw myself in Becca, and it wasn’t just the good parts. I feel like the exerts from her diary could have been things that I wrote myself.

This was such an amazing book that touched on two very different, but very real queer experiences. Even though there are some horrible scenes involving Becca and other people, there are some excellent spicy sapphic scenes that were just written so well. This is one of those books that will stay with me and I will recommend it to anyone looking for a dark queer romance.

*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Releases December 8th!

I literally devoured this book in one sitting, it was so good, and though cliché, I couldn't put it down!

This is the second book in the Haunted Hearts series, though it can be read as a standalone (I highly recommend Come Out, Come Out though) and follows Aiden's sister Becca and her childhood best friend/first love Stasi. It's a really heavy and dark book, their romance and healing journeys aren't always pretty or linear, they're both scarred, morally grey and imperfect women, but it made them human and their healing felt so much more meaningful.

Like mentioned before, the topics of this book are possibly triggering, so be sure to check the list before reading. The story is sometimes uncomfortable, but written so well, I'm obsessed with the way Alexia Onyx describes things and pours emotions into words, it's captivating, especially when it came to Becca's pain and trauma, and Stasi's obsession. The poems she wrote for her and the lengths she went to were insane in maybe not the best of ways, but at the same time Stasi never stopped trying to support and be with Becca.

The book is pretty spicy, and the scenes were so good. The romance is almost a childhood best friends to lovers, and the story does have a HEA, though maybe not how you'd imagine. I'm really intrigued about a certain character we meet at the end of the book named Hawthorne, his book is coming next in Light As A Feather, and I'm beyond excited to read it!

“The silence is never the peace or safety it should be; it's a quiet destruction that eats away at us minute by minute or year by year. Infecting. Eroding. Eating us alive.”

Alexia Onyx was my first paranormal romance author and now she is also my first sapphic romance author - and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The emotional devastation was on POINT with this one, it had me sobbing at multiple points during Becca’s and Stasi’s story. The way Alexia really drove home how difficult and draining it is to pretend to be someone you’re not - whether that’s your sexuality or hell just your personality in general - spoke volumes, she held back no punches. I felt so much for both characters and all I wanted to do was wrap them up in a massive hug and tell them that they are enough and always would be. So we know Alexia loves to pack an emotional punch as I said before, but she also loves to SERVE with her spice and damn 🥵. The story is the perfect mix of toe curling spice and heart wrenching emotion - one minute you’ll be crying and then the next you’ll be giggling like a school girl 👀.

“Isn’t that what we all do? Create versions of ourselves that help us retain the love of others?” — “Isn’t that sad that we’re expected to?”

Honestly, this one dissapointed me a bit.

After reading Aiden's story and quite enjoying the dynamics between Aiden and Skye so much, Becca and Stasi just didn't give off the same relationship-goal-vibes.

I still enjoy that so many "taboo-subject of society" find such a big role in this series, like Skyes depression and Beccas mental health struggle after abuse. Its such an important message, that its ok to be a part of someones life and talked about. Loved this.

But Becca and Stasi really killed the book for me. The whole hot-and-cold concept was just too quick on the back and forth. I had the feeling I was reading about the emotional roller coaster interaction of two teenagers instead of young adults.

The "I want this so bad" to "I hate you and don't you try to come back to me because I'm not your emotional trash bag", I get that, but literally the next second "I'm sorry"...OK, come eat me out. Like Girl, WHERES UR BACKBONE????

Also Stasi was such a lovely character, untill they had sex, every time she would just turn into this cringey jock of a guy with horrible sex-talk that had me pulling an eww-face more often then not.

The introduction of Hawthorne was very nice and had me on my toes again. So I will be waiting for his installment and hopefully won't be dissapointed again.

Warmer, Colder was exactly what I needed Alexia Onyx to follow up her first book, Come Out, Come Out with. Welcome to my auto buy author club, Alexia! I was a huge fan of Come Out, Come Out, I read it twice in about 6 months- which is a hell of a compliment from a reader like me (which is to say, it’s rare that I reread books and have a TBR a mile long). Warmer, Colder was the follow up that I needed! Or should I say, the prequel I needed. I was so interested in Aiden’s sister, Becca, in the first Haunted Hearts book. Well, Becca’s story did not disappoint.
Warmer, Colder was an emotional rollercoaster, there is simply no other way to put it. It was will they/won’t they done perfectly. All about two characters overcoming the trauma of their pasts to come together.
A dark romance done PERFECTLY! With so few characters, especially towards the middle/end Alexia still kept the book fresh, though it did drag for me for a little bit. That being said, the ending was incredibly strong and got me interested for the third (and final- SOB) book in the Haunted Hearts Trilogy.

If you’re into dark romance books, and can read a book with triggers like this one- I highly recommend Warmer, Colder. Though, be sure to take the trigger warnings to heart- it’s a heavy one!

• Let me preface this by saying I read this a HOT minute ago but I am behind on some reviews. I’m kinda mad I haven’t gotten this one up yet so here we go.

• I am so in love with Alexia’s writing. After Come Out, Come Out I IMMEDIATELY dove into this one. Both books had me in their clutches. I am a fangirl forever. I cannot wait to see what she brings next and in the future 😘

• Becca & Stasi, the babes 🫶🏻 I know it’s incredibly ironic to say but the way she writes about trauma is beautiful. It’s relatable. And their chemistry was just, electrifying. I was hooked. Definitely not telling you a lot whatsoever because I refuse to spoil this. But I love them both SO much. Talk about obsession 😏

• If you haven’t read either of these books, seriously, what are you doing. I’m ticked at myself for waiting so long. Do it. 𝐈’𝐦 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐝𝐝.

Side note- This Playlist is absolute 🔥 I still listen to it.

Fun, dark, and hot

I needed a palette cleanser from all the ARCs I've been reading and this was perfect for that. Beyond hot, with a rich history between the MCs and an interesting magical/witchy element. Stasia is such an inspiring MC even with the fact that she's very clearly unhinged. The complexity of Becca and Stasia's relationship kept every scene and moment of them together interesting, and the intensity of the story kept me on the edge of my seat. So glad I found this story!

I don’t know if I’ve ever read a more heartbreaking book in my life. I feel exposed. Flayed open.

As emotional as this book made me it was truly wonderful. I only cried three times and I will definitely be getting the audiobook once it’s available.

Eeeee thank you so much to Alexia Onyx for sending me this ARC!

I will highly suggest that you read book 1 before diving into this book. We are following Aiden’s sister Becca and that right off the bat that got me excited. Stasi is the sexiest stalker I’ve ever read about and Becca doesn’t stand a chance. 😏

This is a sapphic, witchy, bully, dark romance and heavy on the triggers. I love how Alexia really does take care of her readers with how much thought she puts into her trigger warnings(she even lists them chapter by chapter) that’s amazing!

The main plot to this book is Becca and Stasi coming together and their journeys getting there. I appreciate the consistency in this story because it did match so well with the first book Come Out, Come Out. The Haunted Heart series is for true dark romance lovers who like a lot of spice.

Overall, I did not enjoy this book as much as Come Out Come out. I felt like we were lacking a lot in the actual relationship with Stasi and Becca. And I had a really hard time with Becca as a character. I felt for her, but I think her dealing with her sexuality the entire time was being dragged out and it could have just been so much better. Comes out December 8th!! 🖤
