A woman’s journey to find herself as she discovers secrets of the past.
When thirty-two-year-old Ava Winslow inherits a flower farm from her late grandfather’s estate, she’s determined to uncover the secrets she knew her family was hiding.
As she draws closer to the truth, the last thing she expects to find is a portal hidden on the property leading to another world. Desperate to learn what her mother never revealed before her death, Ava is thrust into a magical land of fae on the brink of war.
Alone again in a world unfamiliar to her and plagued by the grief that followed her there, she must make a life-altering decision; does she try to find her way back to the farm? Or, does she embrace adventures she only ever dreamt of, and follow a new path that might feel more like home than anywhere ever has?

I received an ARC copy of this book and I'm leaving this honest review voluntarily. I devoured Whispers of the Elderoak in a day - couldn’t put it down. I need Book 2 now!
Ava is a very relatable character and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her evolve in her journey. The vibes of this book are so cozy - the way K.M. describes the scenery is immaculate and puts you right in the middle of the action. I can’t wait for the rest of the series. The slow burn romance is *chef’s kiss*. If ACOTAR, Legend of Zelda, and Lord of the Rings had a baby, this book would be it. Absolutely recommend!
This story could have been good, but the writing was abysmal. The main character was supposedly 32 but acted 16. The dialogue was horrendous, simplistic and at times down right childish. Ava went back and forth between having a backbone and some semblance of intelligence and maturity, to a pick me girl with middle school level dialogue and emotional intelligence. Casimir wasn’t just “mean”, one of the creative (lol) words Ava used to describe him, but a genuine asshole. He was basically two different characters depending on which paragraph within a chapter you were on. A lot of his actions and reactions didn’t make any sense. It was a nice effort at a first book, but needs major, major work to become good.
I received this as an arc book. I am so glad I was chosen to be able to arc read this book!! It is sooo good. It was easy to follow along with and it left me wanting so much more in a good way!!! I can’t wait for the 2nd book because I need to know what happens. The way the setting was explained made it sound so so beautiful! And don’t even get me started on the characters, I love them. Ava is very strong and her growth and strength from start to finish is awesome. The way you can sense slowly she is figuring out who she is and what she needs to do is awesome and I can’t wait to see how she thrives in the next one. Also the whole entire group she is with is amazing as well. This was a very well written book and I 100% recommend it to read!!!
First off, I had the privilege of ARC reading this debut novel by K.M. Gordon and I am thrilled to have done so. I rated it 4.5 stars! It was an easy to read fantasy book with easy to follow world building. Throughout the book, i enjoyed the whimsical and cozy vibes. There were elements of danger and high stakes which kept the book very interesting. The banter between the characters was so GOOD! I caught myself laughing a few times. I absolutely loved the camaraderie between the characters and the found family element. The female main character Ava was very relatable and she was literally thrown into chaos throughout the book! I absolutely enjoyed the grumpy-sunshine attitude that our male main character, Casamir, fully embodied! One of my favorite elements of the book is that there are animal companions. Who doesn't love amazing and loyal talking animal companions? Anyway, this book was great and I'm looking forward to book 2! K.M. Gordon did an amazing job with this debut novel and I'm excited to read what happens next!
✒ A quick and easy read, generally enjoyable, though admittedly pretty mid. Not bad, just a bunch of stuff I’ve seen before, and not done in any particularly surprising or new way. But my biggest grievance is that the book is mostly set up with very little payoff.
✒ The first half definitely felt more developed than the second half. Consider that with only 300 pages in the book, we don’t enter the fae realm until around 100 pages in. That’s an entire third of the page count dedicated to the real world, which left me wondering how exactly this book was going to resolve its conflicts and develop the goings on in the fae realm to a satisfying degree with only 200 pages left. Well, spoilers:
✒ I understand this is the first book in the series, but as I said, it did end up being a lot of set up with minimal payoff. Even if your overarching story spans multiple books, there should be a beginning, middle and end of a specific conflict or storyline per book; as such, it felt like this one really only told half a story. The one thing that was actually resolved in this was but that alone is just not enough to be the main conflict of a full novel. Also, we got basically zero information about the titular Elderoak to the point that I'm not sure why it's even in the title.
❦ Things I really liked: ❦
♥ I thought the first third of the book in the human realm was really well done. ♥ The friendships depicted are very lovely and wholesome. ♥ I am such a sucker for animal companions. ♥ I absolutely loved the description of Nelida, the swamp nymph (my favorite kind), and some of the other creepy creatures. ♥ Also I really freaking love the name Deidamia. ♥ The cover!!! (Shoutout HM Mast)
☂ Some nitpicks: ☂
↝ One thing that bothered me about the book that was never addressed in the text itself was that I don’t think it affects the story at all or matters, but it bothers me that no one said anything lol. Even Ava didn’t seem to think anything of it.
↝ Also, I get that Casimir is grumpy and has past trauma and stuff which is why he was taking things out on Ava – but literally,
↝ Casimir, the freaking general, should be mad at himself for
✒ Anyway, despite my criticisms, I did generally enjoy the read and I look forward to seeing how KM Gordon develops and grows as a writer.
❣ Thank you to the author for allowing me to be an ARC reader for her debut. These are my honest thoughts. ❣
✨Arc review, leaving this honest review voluntarily✨ one word comes to mind when reviewing this book and that is Wow! I cannot believe this is K.M Gordon’s debut novel. I was only twenty three pages in and was hooked immediately, let’s talk about my favorite things. World building- this book is set up so perfectly, I was able to very quickly get a sense of the world, both human and Fae realms. Vibes- somehow K.M wrote a book that allows me to one moment have all the cozy vibes like being wrapped in my favorite blanket in front of a fire, to the next second being terrified of what lurks in the dark. Characters- Ava is amazing, yes she goes through it but she has such an amazing push through it attitude, I was able to relate to her in so many ways. Casimir is a mixture of Cassian from A court of thorns and roses and Luther from the Kindreds curse saga. And the side Characters?! I loved them all. Even the villains while horrible were still written impeccably. Storyline- what an amazing story! It had me on the edge of my seat, and even in the moments of downtime I was still thoroughly invested and genuinely wanted to see what would happen in the next scene. I honestly cannot wait for the next book to see Ava grow into the badass I know she is!
ARC read… enjoyed it. Great characters. Good storyline. Although it’s the first in the series, it is a satisfying ending until the next book is released.
❤️ARC review❤️ I couldn't put this book down once I started it! The writing was beautiful, and the world building was seamless. There were little Easter eggs that I cannot wait to unravel in book 2! Sloooooooow burn✔️ Found family✔️ Animal companions✔️ FMC and MMC that both hit the mark✔️
Several tropes: dealing with grief, rebuilding friendships, finding lost home & family, and a few others. Spice in book 1 is maybe a 2, only because this isn’t her true love. I’m sure it will get better with the next book. Slow burn romance towards the end. Great read.
What a wonderful surprise this book was, I absolutely loved it!
We start on a cozy flower farm in the real world, but things take a turn when Ava goes through a portal and finds herself thrown into a fantastical adventure full of fae, demons, hobgoblins, and more. The worldbuilding is so vivid, the pacing is perfect (never a dull moment!), and the banter? Top tier.
This is a slow slow burn (yes, the kind that leaves you screaming internally), and the setup for book two has me counting down the days. Ava is strong, resilient, and clearly stepping into an epic hero’s journey—and I’m absolutely here for it.
If you love portal fantasy, rich magic, and Druid-like fae, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. I read it in one sitting. HIGHLY recommend.
✨ARC Review✨ Five stars!! Whispers of the Elderoak was pure addiction 😍 I have been in a slump and this pulled me right out and into a new world of magic, war, and danger. This is an absolute must read.
The FMC is amazing. She is strong, quick witted, fierce, and easy to love. The writing style?! BEAUTIFUL.
I am dying for the second book and the first one hasn't even been released yet ☠️ I'm not entirely sure how I am going to make it through
The story concept was very cool. But the dialogue felt off, and the flow of events, how people interacted with each other, and their own actions felt very flat. I really wanted to like this, and the “bones” of the plot were SO good. I will continue to try to read what this author puts out because I feel like there is great potential there, & would love to see those areas improve!
I received an ARC copy of this book and wanted to leave a review since I enjoyed it so much.
Ava the FMC lived with her mother and grandfather. She spent her younger life hearing elaborate stories from her grandfather. She noticed her mom had magic but it was never talked about. One day she has to suddenly move away from the family farm and never comes back for visits. After losing her mother and grandfather she takes over his farm. She uncovers secrets and winds herself up in the hands of the enemy in a strange world. Ava questions who can be trusted. Such a fun plots The FMC is witty, kind, and has the cutest animal companion. No spoilers here but the book left off at a perfect cliff hanger and I can’t wait for the next book 🌳✨🧚♀️
I had the chance to be one of the very first to read this amazing story and I loved every Second of it. K.M is an incredible writer and I was teleported into this breathtaking world from the first chapters! I can't wait to read what she has in store next ❤️
1.2⭐️ Okay writing, with okay-ish story, but very flat characters who are not relatable and do not make sense.
I know that it takes a lot to create a story, write it and publish it. And it is okay that the first book feels like it was a first. So I would tend to say that publish any book is success. That being said, except the portal magic, that we know almost nothing about in this book, it was very unoriginal and brought nothing new.
MMC is not relatable, likable and he is just mean. His motives for hating FMC are very childish (because even teenagers are developed enough to be able to understand empathy and perspective of others and I would expect another level maturity from decades old fae) and just do not make any sense. Also he changes his mind every five minutes and it feels like two different characters. I would really appreciate if the romantasy world would stop creating romantic tension with immature and mean masculinity and calling it an attraction.
All characters are flat with mostly two characteristics, that are assigned to them. For example “old” “bad at coking”, which are repeating over and over again. I missed some depth, development, originality…also there is almost no big reaction to the big revelation, that I would imagine would shake with them all.
In my opinion the book ends in weird place, where no action is happening, the high-school attraction is barely there, and we barely get to know the group of five secondary characters, so I cannot tell some of them apart.
This is a magical story with high stakes, compelling characters and emotional depth. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for cozy fantasy with thrilling plot! Whispers of the Elderoak features a strong FMC and brooding MMC with tropes like found family and overcoming grief. Any romantasy lover would enjoy this book. A beautiful debut from K.M Gordon.
SPOILERS! . . .
I loved Ava’s story and truly cannot wait to read about her journey to the elderoak! I’m also foaming at the mouth for more history on her family and what exactly happened when her mom and grandpa fled to the human world. I have so many questions and will be eagerly awaiting book 2. I also really hope we get to see Remy again.
K.M Gordon had a magical way of creating a story and world that was equally cozy and thrilling! Someone take me to Mosshaven right now so I can find my own magical animal companion. Also i’m obsessed with Raine. I love him so much and the budding friendship between him and Ava.
In conclusion, I loved this book and cannot wait to spend more time in this world with these characters. Amazing read!

I received this book as an ARC copy and I’m leaving my honest review:
This has World of Warcraft and Legend of Zelda vibes!
I really liked the imagery in this book. It was good, and I feel like the descriptions helped me picture what it was like.
I liked that the kingdom of Mosshaven had fae with animal companions! That’s what reminded me of WoW like hunters with their pets. As mainly the generals had companions.
I enjoyed all of the different types of paranormal in the book! Fae, demons, goblins, etc.
Some other comparisons I thought of…the demon Queen description reminded me of the one female titan on Attack on Titan. Luna reminded me of binx from hocus pocus. Before, Ava went to Eorharn (spelling) and they were celebrating Fall I pictured the town square in Halloweentown. And, also Remy was giving Dobby from Harry Potter.
I honestly enjoyed all of this.
My only complaints are that it’s 3rd person and I personally don’t enjoy it. And the main FMC is just not my cup of tea at all. I feel like the side characters are all pretty good. Those are my only real complaints. But, we are left with a cliffhanger. Hoping I get to read book 2 when it releases!

This was a truly wonderful read and my excitement for the next 2 books coming out grew with each page I turned! I loved the sense of adventure that this book took you on, it was nice to read a fast-paced book after reading slower paced ones recently! I loved the writing style, and I think my favourite part of the book was the second half, as I really valued the friendship dynamics between the characters! I truly thought they were all very sweet and I can't wait to see these friendships bloom further!
One aspect of the book that I really loved is that Ava is a wildlife biologist! As a conservation and biology student myself, Ava and I share a similar love for wildlife and the biodiverse setting of this book really filled me with lots of excitement to study biology again! Also, she owns a flower farm. What a dream that is! 🌸🌸
All in all, I really loved this book and I am absolutely thrilled that the second book is coming out soon! September has suddenly become a lot more exciting and I can't wait!
P.S. I think Casimir is becoming one of my new favourite MMCs... :D
Katie did an amazing job with this story! It would be loved by fantasy/romance readers, animal lovers, or just anyone looking for a great book! I fell in love with all of the characters/animal companions so quickly, especially Aro! The plot twists and betrayals had me on the edge of my seat! Looking forward to the rest of Ava’s story ❤️
I can not express enough how refreshing it is to have a 30 something FMC. This is a great read! It’s paced great, not too slow but not so fast to where you feel like you’re missing things. Wonderful imagery. I love the animal companions.
*I received this ARC and I’m giving this review on my own free will
I LOVED this book! When I heard about the animal companions I was sold! This book intrigued me from the start. I was never bored. When I thought I had it figured out it still shocked me! What an amazing debut fantasy novel! I can’t wait for the next one!!
OOOOO where do I begin? I love this book. I would say about 60% is when I started getting deep and couldn't put it down. I'm so glad the second book comes out in a few days.
I received this book as an ARC reader. You know when you finish a book and immediately wish the second book was out so you could continue the story? Yup, that was me with Whispers of the Elderoak. K. M. Gordon did an excellent job with this one! The world building is excellent and the character development in such a short time pulls you in making you invested in everyone right from the start. Ava is your typical girl who has lost loved ones and feels lonely and weird. Someone many of us can empathize with and see a bit of ourselves in. I absolutely adore her character. She is strong though she doesn’t always realize it, sharp tongued, pretty but doesn’t really think so, and her ability to love and be kind is one of her strongest traits. She finds herself, a simple human caught up in a fae world with a war on the brink and for some reason she seems to be the answer. But is she merely human? She endures so much but doesn’t loose her heart and she is surrounded by fantastic characters that have this story sucking you in wanting that next chapter like it’s water and you’re dying of thirst. Seriously, read it. You won’t be sorry!
I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It's a wonderful blend of stardew valley for the first half and then lord of the rings in the second half. All the characters are loveable and make sense, the story is engaging and I was always wanting to turn the next page and start a new chapter.
I'm so excited to see how the romance pans out because it is burning so slowly and I love it.
This was an ARC read and I read and am reviewing this book happily voluntary. Whispers Of The Elderoak by K.M Gordon
This was such a good book I read it in a day. It’s a slow burn with great twists and turns. We are thrown into a world with fae and hobgoblins, we follow Ava in her journey to find home and also a place to belong. May I also say the ending to this books was phenomenal it was just enough to want us to come back for more. I am beyond excited for the next book.
This author is a gem of a human being and deserves only good things 💛
It was such a fun journey to see this story go through its various stages from beta reader to ARC reader and now have it on my bookshelf! Found family, animal companions, flower farms, a female protagonist with a fully formed frontal lobe, all wrapped up in a gorgeous cover. What more could you want?!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this ARC of her book. Wow! This review will be hard to put into words and truly encapsulate everything that this book is. I tried to go in blind so that I did not have expectations and boy am I glad that I did! I devoured this book and had to pace myself because I honestly did not want this book to end. The FMC was super likable and I felt for her immediately. The book starts out with cozy vibes and then morphs into a story of mystery, suspense, and constant action. The writing really immersed me in the atmosphere so much so that I could see the setting in my head. The world building was immediate and easy to understand. And I found myself wanting to be in this world. Without spoiling anything, I had an instant connection with the FMC, Ava, and loved a certain little hobgoblin too!
This book release on May 1st. You can preorder the kindle version and KU now. A paperback version is hopefully going to be available for pre order sometime in March.
I cannot wait to read the next book! Guys do yourself a favor and preorder this book. This author is definite going to be right up there with authors like Sarah J Maas and Callie Hart just to name a few.
Thank you Mrs. Gordon for allowing me fo experience this beautiful work of art. You are truly truly talented!
