No matter how unreasonable the climb is, no matter how absurd it gets, I will never lose. [Umemiya]
Now that Sakura's fight with Endo is finished, the war is almost over. The end result depends now on one person only - on Furin's leader, Hajime Umemiya. All he needs to do is to beat the strongest fighter in Furin's history. Peace of cake, right?
But when Sakura and Endo arrive on the battle scene, Sakura's shocked to see the state his senior is in. It seems like it's no longer Umemiya that he's seeing, but a wild, untamed beast that will destroy everything in his path.
"Did he... Did Umemiya used to be like that?" "Oh, yes. You've never seen him like this, huh? Yeah. This is him, when he first came to Furin. Those guys in his year, they wouldn't even bat an eye if they saw him now. It's wild to think that those guys still stuck by him. He's more thick-headed than anyone I know. A real rotten, self-centered bastard."
The way the previous volume had ended, it was obvious that Umemiya was furious. I have never seen such wild rage reflected on his face before. Takiishi, as his opponent, had the opportunity to not just see it, but also to feel it through is fists. Umemiya truly seemed like a wild beast that will stop at nothing to make sure that his opponent will be beaten down. It was such a strange sight, a quite terrifying one I must say. It was so different from what we used to see of Umemiya. He was always a funny, kind and gentle soul, a pure goofball of a man that was the happiest when he was taking care for his little plants. It makes me mad that the situation became so serious that this man had to lose himself in negative emotions again to beat down his opponent and win the war 😭
"You look like you're having fun." "That's because no matter how many times I send you flying, you'll always stand right back up." "Of course. I can't just sit around while my kohai's watching."
The moment Ume noticed Sakura's presence and smiled wildly at him, I felt tears of relief forming in my eyes. That was the moment when I knew that everything was going to be alright, because the big brother was back and we all know that big brothers never lose 🥰
Can I just use this little opportunity to say how wild it is that Umemiya's radiating Gojo's energy and that both of these characters share the same Japanese VA in the anime? I felt the Gojo vibes from Umemiya the moment he was introduced in the anime and from that moment these vibes became stronger and stronger. I cannot express my love and respect for such beautiful characters! Also, there just cannot be a coincidence that Sakura and Megumi also share the same Japanese VA, right? (I saw a short edit of Ume, Sakura, Gojo and Megumi on TikTok recently and I can't stop thinking about the parallels).
To me, there are only two types of "people," aside from me. People who get in my way, who need to be eliminated. And people who will give me things I like. I don't remember a time that I've ever been interested in any of those people. That's why I can't even remember people's faces and names. [Takiishi]
That's a hell of a crazy mindset, isn't it? I knew that there was something wrong with Takiishi, but damn, that's something truly wild, even I hadn't expected him to have such a small and ignorant worldview. Also, I have to say that his innocent-looking eyes rubbed me the wrong way in every page he was in. He seemed like a wolf in sheep's clothes, ready to strike when you will least expect it. A soul full of violence, who didn't know and didn't care to know anything else. That's why, when Ume came back to himself and he spoke of the need to understand each other, my relief changed into a sour feeling.
Look. I like when the bad guys change for the better. I like to think that people can change for the better in general. But not everybody should get redemption. Some villains should just stay as villains, and I think Takiishi's one of them.
Also, I have to say that the fight between Ume and Takiishi ended up too quickly. We spend so much time with Sakura and Endo, why couldn't Ume and Takiishi get the same treatment? Is it because Sakura's the MC and Ume is not? 😕
Anyways, despite the fact that I wasn't fully satisfied with this volume, I'm glad that the war is already over and everybody's safe again. Ume's back to his silly self like he had never changed, and all the heroes met at the party. It was so nice to see them all interact, and I really liked the little scene with Sako and Hiragi. Their shared history really needed some closure, I'm glad that we got it. But what comes next? Is there anybody who can challenge our heroes now or is the story's end near? I'm really nervous, I don't want it to end 😭
I’m still not any closer to being fond of Endo and Takiishi, but I think I hated them less in this one. Ume and Takiishi’s fight was beautiful and terrible all at once, and I loved all parts of it, as bizarre as it sounded. I can see why Endo’s obsessed with Takiishi—he fights like he’s dancing gracefully. And as usual, Ume gave free therapy during his fights so it got into Takiishi a little bit, seeing how he acknowledged Ume and Endo after the fight ended.
Also so so proud of Sakura’s growth 🥺💗 I would’ve wanted nothing to do with Endo after everything that happened, but he still offered to meet Endo again. As much as Endo annoys me, I’d like to see if they can develop a friendship of some sort in the future. And Sakura patiently watched Ume fighting with Takiishi, fully believing that Ume will win the fight. Everything just felt so wholesome 💗💗💗
this arc was… a lot but the character development oh top fucking tier
i thought i couldn’t love sakura and umemiya anymore but nope i love them so much more oh umemiya you are everything also seeing everyone love and cherish sakura oh my baby
ch 153 we start off walking thru chika takiishi's world but what i find the most relatable is the mountainous stack of boba cups
ch 154 i'm just spitballing here but why wouldn't they just ask umemiya if takiishi could fight him. is it bc they want to push him to the very depths of anger - could they not nicely ask umemiya to be unhinged lol? but whatever at least it got me a whole bunch of fight scenes. "i wouldn't have let takiishi get bored" and now i'm getting flashbacks of togatami bc if togame had just told choji his feelings things would be different. i need that panel of endo enamored with chika and blushing imprinted in my memory and oh dip now he's crying tears of joy
ch 155 and here we go oh boy here we go. confirmation that while chika does have a small world in which umemiya exists, one other person exists as well, by the name of yamato endo. "i can't remember people's names and faces" except for TWOOO yeah i'm ngl i get why endo hates umemiya i'd be so mad if i heard the love of my life say someone's name for the first time and it wasn't me "i want you to tell me about yourself" ok he's pulling the therapy card again but also this time idm bc i too want to know more about chika
ch 156 he's such a kind soul that he blames himself for chika being crazy lol. all his fights are like i will win, crush you, and then we're going to talk things out my way. bc the only way to get u to listen is to beat u to a bloody pulp.
ch 157 "i like the rain" someone get me a scalpel i need to see what's going on in that brain of his "i honestly don't care who wins or loses" he's literally just here to have a great time lmao "now that's settles get the hell off me" reaffirming why he's my fav
ch 158 cue my favorite chapter in this entire manga. the only way it'll be topped is if endo plants a big fat kiss on chika's mouth. it's so fascinating how endo talks and then he'll say smtg that resonates with takiishi who'll immediately stop beating him up just to listen. endo glaring at umemiya on the ground like ur the only way takiishi can smile and i still hate you. love that absolute face of digust "want me to tell you the trick to being with someone who'll change your world? you start by calling people by their names. that's how you tell them that you recognize them. that you're looking at them." said it to sakura, now it's to takiishi endo's ... after takiishi says umemiya's full name. u forget endo is a prodigy and remembers umemiya's phone number after hearing it once. and will remember it for takiishi despite loathing umemiya so much. now i've seen this panel so many times. but reading the buildup and then getting to it is sooooo good. ladies and gents this is the actual moment i've been waiting for since i started this mange. even if they're a small arc in the long run it was all worth it. i'm sure endo thinks the same. bc he's proven wrong here. he may even think chika doesn't know his name. but on his back, arms wrapped around his neck, lips near his ear, chika takiishi acknowledges yamato endo and calls him by his full name. nii-sensei ur a certified genius. ok and then endo blushing again after hearing it woww. also the way takiishi pauses before saying it ahhh. there's exactly 3 people in his world and endo is one of them! i saw a tumblr post and i'm directly quoting bc i just pulled it up, "we're not soulmates. this is not divine intervention and this is most certainly not chance. i willed this. i knit the threads of fate myself until they spelled your name." insane much?? endo's put in ten years of hard work and devotion he thought was unreturned just to be in takiishi's hemisphere. he did all that and ten years later he gets to enjoy how it's paid off.
ch 159 i am light yagami as he lays dying on the staircase. "what am i gonna do now?" i read this so i could fully enjoy the endochika angst arc and um now it's over. i am begging nii-sensei to do more with this ship there's like 100 english fanfics out there and it's not scratching that constant itch. i'll be honest i think endo should help to pay off some of those damages. shishitoren and roppo ichiza and gravel what nice friends <3 "burn umemiya-san's vegetables and i'll burn you" sugishita is back baby
ch 160 i like friendly jo togame and i'm sure he doesn't miss his old self at all, but from a purely sadistic side, i sometimes miss that old self. but if he's glad to be himself again, i'm glad for him as well. aw sako what a journey he's had
so it's the end of the great fire extinction arc and it was a really good one and i cannot wait to see it animated. mostly i can't wait for the endochika edits bc i'm starved on that end as well. but besides the shipping and yearning it provided so much insight for sakura and co. i do wonder what the next big conflict will be, and i assume nii-sensei needs to take a breather after like 100 chapter of fighting. time for some wholesome chapters? anyways, i will fondly return to endochika flashbacks and interactions and the "yamato endo" panel bc seriously it's just so good. tsubaki has some, but i've never seen anyone like endo show such explicit romantic feelings towards someone like he does, same gender wise. refreshing yes. and the fact that it's such a complicated (toxic to those who feel like being fandom police gross) multifaceted relationship. it would be a waste not to go further into it but for now i trust nii-sensei. maybe it'll take another 100 chapters to get back to them, but hey i've watied 1300 days (and counting) for itoshi sae to appear again in the manga and who knows how long for any old bsd cast to appear so i suppose with endochika i can be patient if the payoff is worth it. amazing arc.
This arc was great, amazing really, for Sakura's development. He's slowly but surely starting to understand that everyone in Bofurin accepts him and loves him for who he is. I'm hoping to learn more about Sakura's backstory.
My issue with this arc is that the end of it felt...rushed? Sakura's fight with Endo was...okay. I mean, the things I did like about it were that Suo, Nirei, and Sugishita were able to talk some sense into Sakura and convince him that he doesn't have to keep shouldering everything himself. That they're his friends and they wouldn't ever blame him if he had failed a fight, more specifically, his fight with Endo. The ending of his fight with Endo was...satisfactory in some ways, but in others it fell flat. Takiishi's fight with Umemiya was incredibly rushed to me. Does Takiishi really only like fighting Umemiya because Umemiya's younger self was wilder and more reckless? Is that really the only reason? Destroying an entire town for that seems extreme. I get why Endo wanted this to happen, he wanted to make Takiishi happy, but couldn't he have just challenged Umemiya to a duel? A duel with Takiishi? Why bring all of Bofurin into it? Especially if Takiishi never fought anyone except for Umemiya.
I liked this arc for Sakura's development and growth, and I really liked getting to see how Kaji and Hiragi met. One other thing I liked was seeing Sako and Hiragi make up, with Sako apologizing to him and all.
Overall, a brilliantly written arc for Sakura's development. I only wish the ending was more satisfactory. It was rushed, and unlike Togame and Choji, Endo and Takiishi weren't particularly regretful or remorseful about their actions whatsoever. They didn't bother to help fix the town they wrecked, and although Endo is seemingly more friendly towards Sakura, Takiishi didn't show much care at all. All he did was call Umemiya and Endo by their full names, and I know that's a first step for him, but that's it? If we see them again, I hope they show at least *some* development or growth. I doubt it though. This volume contains chapters 153-160.

First of all, this is getting 5🌟 in large part because I’m just glad the bullshit with Endo and Chika is over. If I had to keep dealing with their mess much longer, I was going to lose it. The arc with them isn’t terrible, but I hate everything they stand for, and I felt no satisfaction seeing them have at least a bit of growth.
Like, how is Endo gonna finish having his ass beat, but then still have it in his spirit to talk shit about Ume? You want to call UME self-centered?!?! Have you lost your damn mind?! I’m calling the psych ward. His whole vision is about making his whole community happier and more peaceful. Don’t fuck with me 🙄
Then there’s the whole fact that I’m sick and tired of reading all these fights where Chika and Endo are just grinning ear to ear while they’re fighting, and half the time their opponent is just sick and tired of them. There’s very little fun happening on the other side of the fight. I’m like…please go to therapy, bro. Like wtf 😩 Like in theory I understand the concept of enjoying fighting, but I can only respect that when your opponent feels the same. This is not the case here when all my boys are just trying to fight and win to keep their community safe.
And that’s not the only thing! What do you MEAN Ume is the one who has to teach Takishi the lesson of, “Hey, you know what would be neat? If you treated others like actual human beings and not like they’re disposable.” Ume out here really having to say, “You know what’s fun? Treating people with dignity and respect.” 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Ume really IS better than me because I could never. However, it is this very nature of his that makes him best boy. Love him to pieces. Adore him and what he does for his Furin boys and his community. That’s my baby right there 💖 I’ll support him forever.
Finally, I’m just glad my boys can chill for a while and be happy. I ship all my boys with relaxation and peace 😩
the symbolism throughout the climactic fights of this arc was so insanely good I feel grateful that I experienced them. from the snakes and branches in endo and sakura’s fight to the fire and rain in takiishi and umemiya’s fight, it’s just so incredibly beautiful tbh. being able to take a story that at its surface is about boys beating each other into the ground and elevate it into something so visually and symbolically amazing is incredible. and I love how hopeful it is. it’s not just needless violence, every fight is a conversation (umemiya is based) and they learn more about each other and connect through them. I just love this so much.
one of my favourite pages in this volume was when sakura was talking about how distant umemiya was and it showed us that he was both physically distant from sakura and mentally distant from bofurin by following up with a panel of their flag. the visual storytelling there was amazing. I’m actually going insane about this volume
It’s a good thing broken bones and missing teeth aren’t a thing in this series. Still no teachers or parental figures anywhere to be seen 😅 the great battle is finally over, but it doesn’t seem like the series has come to an end yet. It’s hard to see where it can go from here, but maybe more personal interactions beyond just battles. I like the party at the end with all the different gangs.
Endo and Takiishi have a weird and unhealthy relationship, but both are…abnormal, so I guess it works out.

Since this is just his first year, I know that this series is gonna be dragged out with more and more bull characters showing up. Imma believe that the characters grow up and get their individual wishes to come true with being king and protecting the town and all that.
I know that I will probably still buy these volumes as the come out, but I’m not that invested in the story anymore. Regardless, this is such a fun and beautiful story even though it is full of violence.
great ending to a crazy arc. i’m still not fond of endo and takiishi (i think they’re both in srs need of therapy), but ig i like their bond w sakura and ume respectively…anyways, those last chapters were so wholesome andjdksjdnsk i love all of them (excl those two) so much😭😭😭
Fun we got our final fight in this arc and a bbq where they discuss their feelings and the aftermath of what this means for them as a group. Art is so pretty and the fights are easy to follow. I need my library to get the next one ASAP.
