The Best Mistake

Two years ago, he would’ve been the shoulder she’d lean on. Now, he’d gladly step aside and watch her fall.

Kamila Morales’ trust is hanging by a thread. Her sophomore year was a disaster after another friends-with-benefits arrangement had gone awry. A night of tears, a handful of therapy sessions, and months of self-defense classes later, she’s confident that the first semester of her junior year will be nothing short of amazing. With the support of her three best friends, her new job, and the vow to remain single, she can’t help but have a sliver of hope that everything will go as planned. That is until the life she left behind, the one that forever changed her two summers ago, collides with her present, making last spring look like child’s play.

Cameron Kahlo is finally where he needs to be: Driscoll University. His plan is simple: get a degree, learn the ropes to running a business, and avoid his ex-girlfriend’s sister/former best friend at all costs. Only, all his plans go down the drain when the person he was supposed to stay away from is also where he must be. Cameron has no choice but to work with the woman who’s the bane of his existence or watch his future go down in flames.

I was born and raised in NYC and Bogotá, Colombia. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic, and after watching dozens of 2000s rom-coms and listening to the best love songs of all time, I was given a very popular book series on my seventeenth birthday that changed my life forever.

After eight years of living in other author’s worlds; I created my own. In the fall of 2022, I snatched my laptop and outlined my debut novel. It was filled with everything I loved: steam, romance, hate, and a happily ever after. It was at that moment I knew that this was what I wanted to do.

When I’m not writing, I can be found reading (shocker, I know), cooking, dancing, on a road trip, or out at the movies.

Wow! Thank you Nina for the ARC copy this book was just the thing I needed this month to get me sitting on the edge of my bed wanting to know what happens next. If you like enemies to lovers and second chances Cameron and Kamila are IT!!!

This story takes you through college years of 2 best friends whose relationship goes back to high school and the drama that took place then into the now. If you aren’t intrigued yet let me say this, twin sisters ex!

The friend group that turned into found family for Kamila is everything a girl could hope for in a situation like hers and I just loved how involved in the storyline they all were. I can’t wait to read more about the rest of the group in future books. I will be waiting……

Big shoutout to Nina Rey and her team for the ARC of the best book ever! ❤

Seriously, I loved this book so much. All of the characters were fun, deep, emotional, and all so different in their own ways. I hope that as the series continues, we can dive deeper into Levi, Jake, and Emma.

Kamila and Cameron - you have my whole heart. The drama, the tension, the eventual love and compassion!!! I read this book so fast because I simply couldn't put it down. I have read a lot of spice in my time and this author truly gets it right. Not only was it well written, but there were no ridiculous words for body parts and it felt realistic. Sex positive also, which I always love to see.

Also, as soon as I saw 'Decode' by Paramore in the playlist, I KNEW there was going to be a Twilight reference. And there was (big fan here, if you don't already know). Speaking of music, I really loved how it was incorporated in this story. Not only do we get to know what Cameron is listening to when he's walking to class, but we get to know what songs Kami loves to dance to. It makes it so fun because that gives me the opportunity to listen alongside the characters.

And the nod to Gilmore Girls in the beginning? I was sold IMMEDIATELY. Small town college, cozy, fun, emotional with the right amount of friend, relationship, and family drama. And David? I hope you ROT!

One thing I didn't love, and this is definitely a personal thing that I am sure other people won't agree with, but I didn't like the translations. The main character and her family are Latina/o. Great. I assumed we would get some Spanish thrown in here and there, and we did. Amazing. But the translations after the dialogue threw me off a little. I know not everyone who reads this will be fluent like me, but I just didn't personally enjoy it. I've read other books that have used languages other than English without translating and it doesn't bother me. If I didn't know what it said, I would simply look it up. Again, this is just a personal preference and didn't take away from the story itself; just felt unnecessary to me.

TLDR; I absolutely LOVED this book. I cannot wait for the rest of the series, I can't wait to purchase the physical version, David sucks, Cameron is incredible, and Kamila is stunning/smart/funny/strong. So much fun and friendship and love and the perfect level of spice. 1000/10!!!

PLUS SIZE LATINA FMC. THATS ALL. Read it.

This is a debut novel from Nina Rey, and I’m telling you I wouldn’t have even known this was her first book if I didn’t see it. It’s so hard to even write a review because this was such a cute read and my only issue is that I have to wait for the rest of the series… like I need more!!!

Can we talk about the spice real quick.. HELLO? This was sppppicccyyyy girl, like I was HAWT READING THIS. I love when an author can write some genuine good spice. Not once did I cringe or feel like it was too much, it was the perfect amount of detail without making it feel almost uncomfortable or weird. I can have a love hate relationship with spice but THIS.. perfection. chefs muthafucking kiss.

I really just loved so many aspects of this book and if I get to yapping about everything this review will be long as shit. Anyways I highly recommend this debut novel from Nina Rey, she did amazingly. The tropes alone will do all the convincing you need to pick this up.

I need to get my hands on a printed copy immediately or I’ll go feral.

ARC Review⭐️

✨The Best Mistake by Nina Rey is a captivating debut that masterfully intertwines romance, drama, and personal growth. I got completely sucked into Kamila and Cameron’s chaotic, slow-burn romance.🥰

Kamila is the kind of main character I want to be best friends with—smart, determined, and just messy enough to be relatable. 💕And Cameron? Annoyingly charming with just the right amount of “I’m too cool for this” energy.😎Their dynamic is the perfect mix of will-they-won’t-they and just-kiss-already-for-the-love-of-all-things-holy.🤣

Kamila and Cameron’s chemistry? Off the charts🔥. The banter? Chef’s kiss. 🤌🏽The drama? Just the right amount of “oh no, what now?” without making me want to throw my Kindle across the room. Also, the music references made me feel like I was part of an exclusive club where heartbreak and playlists go hand in hand.🎶

I also enjoyed how Kamila and Cameron were able to heal and grow together it warmed my heart!❤️‍🩹 The friendships and family relationships portrayed add depth to the story, making it more than just a typical romance novel. The twist and turns were unexpected and crazy which I loved!🫶🏽

⭐️In conclusion, this book offering a blend of passion, humor, and heartfelt moments. I eagerly anticipate the next book in the series and recommend this book to anyone seeking a romance that feels both fresh and deeply satisfying🙌🏽

Oh, I stayed up REAL late last night (technically this morning?) to finish this one—I legit could not put it down. I was invested! Nina Ray delivers an angsty, slow-burn college romance that feels real. Kamila Morales is strong, independent, and determined not to let her past define her future. But when Cameron Kahlo—her high school best friend and her twin sister’s ex—crashes back into her life, all bets are off.

Her and Cam’s journey wasn’t easy, and that’s what made it so good. There were many times that Kami could’ve caved in to forgiveness to both Cam and her narcissistic sister, but she worked so hard on herself, and there was no way she was throwing that away. Cam had to earn her trust—and boy, did she make him! 😆

I’m also super big on supportive side characters, and Jake, Levi, and Em played such a huge role in Kami’s story. The way they showed up for her (and how sneaky they were at the end 👀) makes me so excited to see where their stories go next!

Plus, major shoutout to the way this book handled sex positivity. Too often, men get a pass for casual relationships, while women are judged. But Kami knew her boundaries and made sure others did too (except for that piece of trash, David 🤬). It was written in such a healthy and powerful way.

Truly, The Best Mistake is an emotional, swoony, and empowering read. If you love messy, complicated, but deeply worth it second-chance romances, this one’s for you!

For lovers of the second chance trope- this ones for you!

The Best Mistake, released on March 20th starts out spicy and end with heart, and a plot twist or two!

Kamila Morales is in college and trying to keep things light, she does not want to get to involved with anyone and is VERY upfront about her casual trysts. In the opening scenes we get a very hard look at how that is backfiring on her. Insert tears, therapy, etc, but Kamila bounces back and decides her junior semester will be different.

Insert Cameron Kahlo, her TWIN sister's ex. Yea- her junior semester just got a lot more complicated.

This book has:
enemies to lovers
forced proximity
small town love (more like small town college)
spicy scenes
A DEDICATION PAGE WITH GILMORE GIRL VIBES

First off, a big thank you to Nina Rey and Torch Lit Ink for the ARC copy!

I enjoy a good bit of drama, and I think this one delivered. This college romance was a nice change of pace from what I had been reading, and it was fun stepping into this universe! I’m excited to see who’s up next in the series, as I feel some of the side characters could use some more character building. I liked seeing Kamila and Cameron’s relationship develop as they got to learn all new things about each other from their time apart. Kamila and Cameron’s relationships with their families were also nice to explore, and I loved how Kamila was able to find a good support system away from her sister. She went after what she wanted and she persisted and got it! I also appreciated the Latina representation and how that was incoporated in her family dynamic.

Despite my fun with the drama, I think I enjoyed the second half more than the first as it had the more emotionally intimate moments. I must say, I was a tad bit disappointed when the Scandal references on both their ends didn’t lead to them enthusiastically watching the show together, but I sure can imagine (and it’s very cute)! I’m curious to the see roles they’ll play in the next novels! Congratulations Nina Rey on your debut!

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions! The character development of Kamila and Cameron was incredible—watching them grow individually and together was so rewarding. The enemies-to-lovers and second-chance romance tropes were executed perfectly, and I loved how their complicated pasts shaped their present. The forced proximity and hidden secrets kept me hooked the entire time. Kamila’s journey of healing and self-discovery was powerful, and the found family aspect added so much heart to the story. If you’re a fan of emotional, angsty romance with fantastic character growth, this is a must-read!

I finished this book so fast! One of the dedication pages mentioned something about gilmore girls and all that and instantly, I was hooked, although i'm a jess fan through and through
I just love how it showed how strong their friendship was, as kids and even though they grew apart, that close bon never really left even through the hurt. The twist towards the end, shocked me, not with the sister.I seen that coming a mile away, but with the other person!
I honestly think my favorite part was all the groveling and how she didn't give in right away, and how supportive all the friends were!

I received this as an arc and I loved it! I finished it in a day and I loved it! It’s a friends to enemies to lovers with spice and amazing FMC representation. The first 20% was a lot of spice and a little plot from as the book went on the plot started to develop and it was so cute! I really enjoyed this book. I literally devoured this book so quickly. The development of the main character’s relationship and the trust they had to rebuild for each other brick by brick was my favorite.

I was really surprised by this book. It started off a little slow for me but it didn’t take too long before I really got into it. I loved getting glimpses back into their past building up to the reveal of what they went through to cause the rift between them and Kamila’s sister. I thought Cameron was a great book boyfriend! The things he did to win her back- swoon. And I love that they were best friends first when they were younger and got back to that. And if you’re looking for spice- there is plenty! Those scenes were really well done! I can’t wait for the rest of the series

I received this book as an arc but this is my honest review!

After about the 25% mark I was starting to wonder if this book was going to be all spice and no real plot, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't the case. After about the 40% mark I started really getting into the storyline. Cameron and Kamila had a lot of history that started getting unpacked and the constantly changing dynamic of their relationship was fantastic.

My Review & thoughts :

Kamila & Cameron are everything . I in love with them , within the first few chapters! I just knew right away it would be a 5 stars for me 🥹 . The tension & the back and forth were everything!! Not to mention the friend group that surrounds them 🤌🏻🤌🏻
Getting to know both of the main characters , their back stories & just watching them grow throughout the book had me falling in love repeatedly.
I wanted to cry when it ended . it was over too soon and I needed more of them !
I can’t wait to dive into more of the side’s characters

Another ACTUAL 10/10⭐️ for me personally 5/5🔥

🩷I LOVED THIS BOOK 🩷
💜Kamila (MFC)
🩶CAMERON (MMC)
💔Ana (Kamila's Sister 💥&💥 Dated CAMERON/broke up on bad terms during high school).
All relationships broken, including BFFs Kamila & Cameron’s until two years later when they run into each other agin while attending the university of Driscoll.

Over time, Kamila refused to be in a relationship after her bio dad walked away when she was little and then witnessing what her sister & Cameron went through she didn't want that pain of people walking away or not loving her. This story start with her being with a guy just for intimate reasons & told him that it was all it would be until he told her he loved her & when she didn't say it back he went a little mad and threatened her but thankfully she lived with her roommate to helped get rid of him but he shook her up so much she ended taking self defense classes and she becomes really good. She's at university & able to stand on her own & not let anyone push her around as he became stronger mentally & physically after ditching th bad guy. She has an amazing group of friends who stand by her no matter what. Eventually when she's in her class she hears a familiar voice that makes her freeze & when she turns she's looking at the eyes of her ex best friend CAMERON who proceeds to sit next to her & then frm that moment GAME ON they act as though they hate each other, throw jabs at each other mostly verbal until she junk kicks him & punches him in the eye LOL for awhile over time their at each other's throats & won't talk about what happened in the past & until one night out at a bar the tension is so tight till it finally SNAPS & THEY KISS but they don't get together from there they take awhile to talk some things out & for them to finally crash into each other & COMBUST all while still nor resolving anything which takes what feels like forever LOL but the SPICE between these to was HOTT & the way my Mab CAMERON took charge in the bedroom 🥵. Things take awhile to work out but to fund out what & how the DON'T HESITATE & GET THIS BOOK!!!!

Trigger Warning:

Someone remind me, isn't there a movie where the girl is crushing on her sister's ex? I swear I was getting deja vu the whole time reading this book! Well in The Best Mistake, Kamilla and Cameron are high school best friends. The type of best friends that everyone thinks should be together but aren't. But Kami has a jealous faternal twin sister, Ana, and Ana decides one day that she and Cam will date.

Flash forward a few years and Kami is in her junior year at Driscoll University. She's got an amazing tight friend group and puts up with drunken phone calls from Ana. Out of the blue, Cam is on campus, having transferred to Driscoll, and Ana can't avoid him. What happened between these two best friends? Why do they hate each other so much now?

The sexual tension between Cam and Kami is top notch. I love a good enemies to lovers romance and this was definitely a true one for me. Not only was it spicey but it had angst, tension, family drama, and mystery to it. I really enjoyed this story. Actually, I really enjoyed all the characters and I'm glad this is going to be a series because I really hope we get a book focused on each of the core friend group- Emma, Jake, Levi, even Will/Zoey.

Cameron has the bad boy look down. Tattoos, eye brow piercing, cocky attitude. While Kami had the thick thighs, sweet personality, not afraid of her sexuality, Latina vibe going on. I wanted these two to be together, but I loved the tension between them- makes for great spicey scenes lol. I kept trying to figure out what happened between Cam/Ana/and Kami to cause their relationships to explode and while I had suspicions, I didn't see the actual reason coming. I definitely can't wait to read the next one!

✨The Best Mistake ARC Review✨

This story is about childhood best friends turned enemies turned lovers. It was such a fun read! The FMC is Latina and being Latina myself, it’s always fun to read about characters you can see yourself as. Kamila is a fierce, loyal, courageous, and infinitely caring friend. When we meet Cameron he comes off as an angry asshole but throughout the story, you find that he’s actually super sweet, swoony and so tender with Kamila. Kamila and Cameron meet in high school and end up becoming best friends. Then Cameron starts dating Kamila’s sister, which ultimately ends badly and ends up ruining his and Kami’s friendship. Fast forward a couple years later and they both end up at the same university and Kamila has so much anger from what happened between him and her sister. The story goes through all these crazy ups and downs, a friends with benefits situation turned real feelings and a roller coaster of a twist that I did not see coming. I don’t want to give away too much but let’s just say that just bc you share DNA with someone, does not give them the right to continuously hurt you. Forgiveness is earned and should not be expected and boundaries are healthy. The chemistry between Kami and Cameron was palpable and was so fun to read how they rediscovered their friendship and love they had for each other. I’m excited to see where Nina goes with the next book and if we get some updates on characters from this book. Thank you, Nina and TorchLink, for sending me an eARC of your book!

This was a very lovely surprise! It took me a few chapters to get into this story but quickly got consumed with it!

It is a beautiful story of former friends, who then resent each other from an incident that happens at the end of high school. But later finding each other to become something more. However, the past trauma needs to be dealt with in order to move forward.

Cam and Kami have this great attraction from the beginning of their friendship and it carries on through the story! I love that Kami stand for what she believes in and for the people she loves! Cam is a little misguided but accepts that he is wrong and does everything he can to make it better!! His groveling in this story is chefs kiss!!💋

It’s also about found family! Having the people you can always count on no matter what! All the character makes a great impact to the story!

I’m so excited to see where the series goes!!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!😻😻😻

Shoutout to Nina Rey and everyone in her corner for this ARC! I really hope the series continues because I found myself rooting and invested in so many of the characters.

I’m a sucker for a good romance with the perfect amount of spice but this… surpasses my expectations! To have the main characters and family represent Latinos in such a beautiful way filled my heart. I felt seen through my favorite genre for the first time ever! From the translations and bachata to Cam taking lessons my Dominican heart is full🇩🇴😻

This book was so well written and consisted of the perfect amount of spice, romance, and comedy. I can’t wait to see where all of the characters end up through the Driscoll series👀😻

Ps: I may or may not have been hooked right after the subtle mention of the Gilmore Girls🥹😊

Wow. This book was hands down in my top 5 of 2025!!
The blurb caught my attention quick, but I had no idea the writing would blow me away. You looking for a best friends to enemies to lovers? You found it. You looking for a woman with backbone? You found it. Are you looking for groveling at its best? Again, you found it.
This book had every aspect a true romance story has! there is not ONE thing I would change about this book! I am so mad at myself for reading it so fast and that I will never get to read it for the first time ever again. I wish I could share so many spoilers because the giddiness that this book gave me was unbeatable. This new world of Driscoll University ... I wish I was a student and part of this friend group! Besides the two main characters, Cameron and Kamila, the other characters were just as important and we were given just enough information about each, and everyone to make us beg for more! I am truly truly blown away!

Thank you Nina for the ARC review of this book, I loved it! It kept me intrigued and interested until the end, I couldn’t put it down 💕

This book has all the best tropes, at least I think personally, I always love a good enemies to lovers. It also had some themes of second chances. I absolutely loved the characters in this book, Kamila and Cameron were GOALS in this book. The banter, absolutely amazing. I found another couple to add to my long list of favorite book couples.

I loved seeing them heal together through everything, and seeing them com together as a couple and by for themselves was endearing and even emotional. This book had everything, literally everything, to keep you intrigued and just overall everything a good book needs. Highly recommend reading if you’re looking for a good book to read that you won’t want to put down.

shout to out @ninareywrites and her team for this amazing arc!

i absolutely loved this book! i was hooked from the get go. first off, as a plus sized latina myself, i loved seeing the representation with a thick latina FMC. i also loved the touches of spanish writing in it as well.

the two main characters in this book were best friends in high school and are now in college together. they haven’t spoken in over 2 years. there’s so much angst and sexual tension between them and did i also mention, he’s her twin sister’s ex?! it’s juicy!!!

let’s talk about cameron khalo!! ugh i loved him sooo much! the things he would do for kamila were swooning! where can i find a man like him?! one of my favorite MMC!

i’m also a sucker for an enemies to lovers trope and this book gave me just that! the spice? amazing. you also get found family and it’s so sweet to see kamila and her friends. the way they love her and have her back was everything!

i highly recommend this book! i have no doubt that if you read it, you’ll LOVE IT! i personally cannot wait to see what else is in store in this series!

p.s. i still really wanna drop kick kamila’s sister….like really bad! i feel like i related so hard because i too have a sibling that put me down constantly and everyone around them never saw how bad they are. i’m glad kamila stood her ground.

I absolutely loved this book! I love a good enemies to lovers book and this one hit the spot! This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat in some parts and giggling like a school girl in others. I loved the banter, spice and storyline. The storyline had drama, romance, banter and friendship, The characters and the relationships/friendships that develop throughout the book had me wanting more. I was hooked and couldn’t put the book down. I loved how throughout the book you got snippets from the past and how the main characters Cameron and kamila ended up where they were.
Cameron was swoon worthy towards the end of the book and would make the perfect book boyfriend!

First and foremost, it only took me a few hours to read this book and let me tell you it kept me hooked the entire time. I have a hard time finding a book that catches me from the very first few pages until the ending of the epilogue. I’m so happy that I gotta be a part of the team for this book.🖤

The emotional connection that I’m going to have for this book is uncanny. The way she wrote each and every character in the setting was phenomenal their early 20s in college, two different groups of best friends between kami and Cam. I have a feeling this book will hit home with a lot of readers that are just starting.

Aside from that, I truly love the way that she wrote the backstory for the two main characters. But in my personal opinion, I feel like she left Easter eggs for the next couple of books following characters from Kami’s best friend group.🤪 you all know that I will be patiently (not so patiently) waiting for the rest of this series to come out.

wow, what an amazing debut! i had so much fun reading this book! from the first few pages, i was hooked. it felt like my favorite early 2000s movies on paper. the characters were relatable, the friendships were beautiful, and the spice was so good! (chapter 26, HELLO 🥵)
the tension between the two main characters was unbelievable! it was cute seeing them try so hard to hate each other, and so satisfying watching them break. i was on the edge of my seat the whole time waiting to find out what happened between kamila and cameron that tore them apart, and man, was it messed up. after everything, i loved watching them find their way back to each other.
this was such a fun, feel-good read and i can’t wait to see more of the driscoll U universe!

Wow wow wow! This was so good! Nina Rey did not come to play with her debut! An absolutely fantastic second chance, friends to loathe to lovers story. I am so excited to see where the rest of this series goes. I'm assuming it's going to be with the rest of the Scooby gang. Cause if I never find out wtf is up with Jake, I'm gonna lose it.
I loved Kamila! I love when I get to have smart, strong women characters. I loved Cameron! I love a man that grovels. Ugh! It's so good!
I love the Scooby Gang. What a lovely found family. I really hope the next books are about the other 3. Besides Jake, I need to know if there's a potential threesome in the future 👀

Thank you so so much Torch Lit Ink and Nina Rey for sending me an ARC!

Loved this book! I loved Kamila—I related to her so much! A plus-size Latina with big dreams, confidence, but also those occasional negative thoughts? She felt so real and relatable.

Ana, on the other hand… poor girl is a mess. I felt so bad for Kami having to pick up the pieces of her sister’s messes. As an older sister, I definitely felt that struggle.

Now let’s talk about Cameron—phew, that man is HOT. 🥵🔥 And the spice? Chef’s kiss! The friend group was also everything; they were exactly the kind of ride-or-die friends everyone deserves. Overall, such a fun, steamy, and emotional read!

Thank you Nina Rey for the ARC copy! 🫶🏽

Received this as an ARC.
It was a good, fast read. I devoured it in one day. From the very start, it hooked me and had me enthralled until the ever end.
I loved Kami and Cameron’s story. The angst, anger, lust is all great. It’s a great enemies to lovers.
Right away you know there’s more to their story from high school than either are saying. But the past and what happened really keeps you reading so you can finally know what happened. Their journey together is authentic and frustrating at times. But it’s also a fantastic journey. Learning to trust again and stand up fur yourself. They both learn a lot through out the book.

This book was such a great read! The perfect mix of college enemies to lovers and second-chance romance, with just the right amount of drama to keep things interesting. The twists were unexpected but fit so well with the characters and their journey, making it impossible to put down.

The tension, angst, and emotions felt authentic to the age group and situations, keeping everything engaging without being over the top. If you love college romance with heated banter, past heartbreak, and just the right amount of drama, this one is definitely worth picking up!
