One summer. One chance meeting. One devastating phone call. Mac is not thrilled about spending the summer before her senior year stuck on a month-long vacation with her family. That is, until she meets Roe, the hot guy staying in the beach house next door. Mysterious and gorgeous, he’s everything she wants and everything she shouldn’t be attracted to. Knowing hot summer days go by painfully fast, Mac wants to make the most of every moment she has with him. Normally, pretty girls are Roe’s specialty. All it takes is a wink and a smile for them to fall at his feet and into his bed. Not this girl. One look at Mac left him speechless, and he instantly wants more than just one night. Little do they know, time is working against them... in more ways than one. How long does it take to fall in love? What will the young couple gamble to hold onto it?

It took me a while to really get into this book. Not because the story was bad but because, in the beginning, the author kept using really short sentences and I had the feeling I was reading a telegram.
Anyway, if you can get past that, the story is not boring at all.
Roe and Mac meet one summer and they fall in love but when Mac’s vacation is over, so is their relationship.
Only time will tell if what they had was strong enough to survive.
Take a Gamble was my first Rachael Brownell novel and, except for the short sentences, I can’t say it disappointed me.
The writing style is good and the story flows. I liked the characters, flaws and all and it wasn’t difficult to connect with them.
It’s a beautiful love story and I really think you should give it a chance. It would make a great summer read.
And you should definitely add more of Rachael’s books to your shelves.
Oh, Roe, Roe. Wherefore art thou, Roe. Where have you been all of my life. Take a Gamble is an amazing beachy read! It is fun, sexy and suspenseful. I enjoyed every minute of it. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes New Adult Contemporary or a steamy romance with some suspense sprinkled in! <3
“Take A Gamble” by Rachael Brownell 5 out of 5 stars
Young love abounds in this stellar tale from Rachael Brownell. The story of Roe and Mac explores what it’s like to experience first love against the backdrop of harsh reality. Is it really possible for love to conquer all or are there some mountains that are just too big to climb? Click on the “buy” button and come see the answer for yourself. You’ll be better off for it!
Mac is innocence personified. She’s lived her life with the “ideal” family…a mom and dad who still love each other and two brothers who sometimes drive her crazy. Her parents are successful, happy people and they have provided their kids all the things they need. Now, after a busy year, they’ve decided to have a month-long family vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC. Mac is looking forward to a chance to spread her wings a little and gain some independence. When she meets Roe on the first day, she embarks on an adventure that will alter the course of her life forever. As darkness looms on the horizon, will their love prove strong enough to weather the storm?
Mac is searching. She’s looking for someone to push her outside of the bubble she’s kept herself in. I really enjoyed her. She’s a very graceful character. It’s hard to convey that in the written word but in every scene it’s her grace that stands out. Brownell has done an exceptional job bringing the heart of Mac to life. I was able to visualize her well and I was one hundred percent invested in her journey.
Roe is charming, a little bit rebellious, and a whole lot of perfection. If Mac is grace, then Roe is charisma. He made me grin and laugh and sigh. He is thoughtful, generous, and seems to have an old soul. Roe was just the right balance for Mac and watching them fall in love was a privilege.
Rachael Brownell has outdone herself with this one. It’s a poignant and beautiful love story that starts one summer and spans years. She really brings her characters to life in such a way that you can see it all play out like a movie in your head. The twists and turns keep you plugged in to the story, anxious to see how it all ends. Her style is flowing and the book is well written. I give this one two BIG thumbs up. It’s a winner and you won’t regret giving it a read. A+ to Brownell!

I love Roe and Mac. They may be my favorite characters at this point. They were fun to write. Their story was fun to write. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
DNF at 82% (but mostly skimmed). I didn't like the writing style in this book and lost interest even though it had a good story line of girl and guy meet on vacation and become lovers, she's sick, they break up but yearn for each other over the years, she becomes engaged to someone else, original lovers meet again. Sounds good but it just never engaged me. Sorry.
If there was ever a book that could be considered both New Adult and Young Adult, this is it. I don't think that it truly fits in just one of those categories. Okay ... Take A Gamble ... first of all, this is from an author that is new to me. I hadn't picked up anything by her before but I probably will now. Take A Gamble is basically a coming of age novel but there is nothing basic about it. There is love at first sight, there is lost love, there is new love ... with tons of other things but I don't want to spoil your first read through.
The teenage characters were fairly easy to relate to but at the same time, I didn't really connect with them either. It's hard to explain. These teenagers went through a few things that I didn't have to go through when I was their age but they went through a lot of things that I did. It was fairly predictable in the middle of the novel. Things just seemed laid out a bit too neatly sometimes. I like a bit of mystery even in romance novels. I like not really knowing what is going to happen yet and I didn't get that completely with this one. Now the ending really threw me for a loop. I was genuinely surprised ... I wish that there were a few more of those moments within the heart of the novel. I think that it could have added a bit. There were a few obstacles that Mac & Roe went through and it felt a little too easy sometimes ... like there should have been a bit more struggle to come out on top. A bit more grittiness would have been great. Make those characters really struggle!! I want to read about how they were dumped into a big crater of a problem and they clawed their way out!!
All in all, it was a good book - it kept my attention and I enjoyed reading it (even if there weren't enough struggles). Oh ... wait ... there was one thing. And this drove me CRAZY during the entire novel. The main character is Mac. Her love interest is Roe. Mac. Roe. Mac and Roe. MacAndRoe. McEnroe. The tennis player. John McEnroe. That's whose face I saw every time I read the names Mac and Roe. Every. Single. Time. I don't think I would be so irritated by it if John McEnroe looked like Channing Tatum but McEnroe is NO Channing Tatum. No. Just, no.
Well written novel, fast paced and heart-warming. I'll definitely read another novel by Brownell. As long as it isn't about Mac and Roe. I just can't go through that name thing again.
I love stories like Take a Gamble about first love. And even more if it's a summer romance. Rachael Brownell did an excellent job and wrote a pretty enjoyable summer read that's definitely a must read one.
Mac is simply a girl with a a loving family. Nothing out of the extraordinary or something that would make the reader be sad about it. She's just a girl trying to break free with her pictured perfect summer vacation. Instead, she's stuck with her whole family in Myrtle Beach. And for a teenager, that completely sucks.
The fact that the character is so "real" makes the story beyond believable and it's one of the main factors that made me enjoy it so much. Mac is a girl you easily like and quickly create that reader-character bond so important in every book to completely immerse into the story.
Roe is one of those guys you like instantly. Not only because you know it's the "other" main character of the story and you know it's the one with the potential to make you fall in love, but because he's the type of fictional boy I like. He's got this rebellious touch and he can have every girl he wants and he knows it. He's good and he also brought a grin from me.
In Take a Gamble you "live" Mac and Roe's relationship: from the very first meeting to the end. And reading how they fall in love throughout the whole story and what moments lead to that important event, it's what makes this story so good.
This is definitely a summer love story you have to read. It's beautifully written and that led to one of those romances that leaves you a goofy smile on the face and makes you want to re-read all over again. My advice? Buy this book, go to the beach and have one of those beach-reading days. At least, that's what I'm planning to do as soon as I finish my exams: re-read this amazing love story!
Years ago, I read a short story in Seventeen Magazine titled, “Small Losses.” In the story, a young girl meets a young man at the beach. They strike up a conversation and she thinks things are going in one direction, but in the end it takes a much unexpected tangent. It’s a story I read over 30 years ago and it came crashing back to my memory when I read Rachael Brownell’s Take A Gamble. Who hasn’t dreamed of a summer romance? Throw in a vacation by the beach and turn that fantasy up a notch. That’s where Take A Gamble starts. The way Rachael Brownell introduces Roe and Mackenna into the story and to each other is lovely. Mac has just arrived at the beach house where her family is vacationing, and Roe is lurking in the shadows when he sees the vision of Mac when she emerges from her house to explore the beach. To say there was an immediate attraction to one another is an understatement. I’d liken it more to a magnetic charge. They couldn’t help but come together. It was as if fate predetermined their destiny to meet. While their relationship progresses quickly, it does not seem implausible based upon the overall setting of the story. Rachael takes these two characters to the brink, only to have them change directions in a way that I did not expect. Even though I was aware of the age of these characters, I never felt like I was reading a YA or NA book. Neither Roe nor Mac behaved in a way that was irritating or immature. They showed genuine care and concern for each other and that care and concern shows in the subsequent decisions they make. The last quarter of the book becomes very climactic and veers in a direction that confused me. I’m not sure I totally believed what was happening or how those involved were trying to bring it to a close, but there was plenty of excitement and an ending that was very pleasing.
MacKenna Trist and Roe Gamble meet at Mrytle Beach while both are there on vacation with their families. They're inseparable, the more time they spend together the harder they fall for one another.
When Mac receives a phone call she knows she must tell Roe about her past. Roe is willing to do whatever it takes to be by her side no matter what. Too much is working against their relationship and Mac loves Roe and is willing to let him go, to save him from more heartbreak that could come if they stay together. She needs to focus on herself even if it means she may never see Roe again.
After years apart, both Roe and Mac have never forgotten one another and have been hoping their lives would cross the same paths one day to reunite. As their hope fades they both decide it is time to move forward in their lives instead of living in the past.
One chance encounter after both had lost hope brings them face to face. Roe and Mac know this is their second chance and will not let each other go this time.
One person from Mac's life has other plans for Mac and Roe and will do what is necessary to keep them apart. Roe and Mac must fight to be together.
This was a very enjoyable read. It is told from both the main character's POVs. Roe is so sweet and just knows all the right things to do and say. Mac is innocent and fun and I liked her character as well. Their relationship comes together quickly and they go through so many ups and downs, which only made me want them be together even more. This story has a little bit of everything from love, loss, drama, and suspense. I think this is a good read for teens and up.
I am recommending this book to all of my friends as an incredible summer read.
Rachael Brownell takes her readers on the roller coaster of emotions with this book. The characters have depth and felt so real to me. Mac and Roe are characters who will fill you with emotions as they go through the roller coaster called life. This isn't just teenagers playing in sandy beaches. This book reverberates with love, angst, problems, thrills, and suspense.
Mac and Roe are my favorite characters ever written by Ms. Brownell. Roe is at the top of my list for perfect book boyfriends for young adults.
Thank you Ms. Brownell for writing Mac and Roe's story. I know this will be one book I read more than one time!
Take a gamble by rachael brownell :) ill give this book a 5 stars! The characters have a lot of depth and it felt so real to me. The characters mac and roe will bring in a huge pile of emotions! This is something any kind of girl or guy would love to have. This book has some love, problems, thrills, sadness all into one. Roe is a perfect guy and would be number 1 in a girls lists for a boyfriend. The ending was very pleasing and happy and it brought me to tears .....happy tears. This book i would recommend to all my friends and family you wont regret reading this book! reviewed by new reviewer Brianna
I absolutely loved this book. as u can see, it only took me one day to read it. I just loved Roe and Mac. They were amazing. Wish we had more of them. Also wish they didn't miss so many years from each other. But everything fell into place. I just loved their story, it's the kind of love everyone wants. I will be read in more books by Rachael Brownell.
What an incredibly beautiful second chance romance story. A story of the true power of fate, or destiny whatever you choose to call it. Mac and Roe meet while on summer vacation, a choice is made and they go their separate ways. Love knows no time though and through the years never fades until they meet again.
This book is utterly amazing! A clean romance that will keep you in so many different emotions you can't speak. I could not out this book down. Crying, hoping, edge of my seat there is so much that happens in this book! A true 5 star must read romance
I really liked this love story. I had an issue of believability when it came to Mac's best friend and Roe's inter-years conversations. Otherwise, thought this book covered all the feels. Will definitely recommend to others.
Wow if I ever thought their was going to be a story to test my emotions it is this one hands down. I felt myself stopping reading this story because my emotions were going crazy the sad the happy my mind couldn't keep up with what the characters were going thru. This has been a truly amazing story from the first page down to the last. I was even left on a small cliffhanger which makes it seem like there could be more or couldn't be more to the story. That's what makes it great!!
***I received this story for free in exchange for an honest review, see more of my review @ http://jmhoward2007.blogspot.com ***
I loved that this story spanned quite a time, from when they met while they are teenagers to when they are done with college. They have a love that was true. Having found, lost and found love again. Mac and Roe also have to deal with some tragedy and angst in their life. This causes a summer romance to end but their love stays true.
At first this seemed like a quick fun read about a teenage summer romance. It soon turned into so much more. Ms. Brownell threw in some twists and turns that I did not see coming. The main characters in this book are well developed. The secondary characters not so much but they still play an important part in the story.
This is a really great book that is an ideal beach read as it's about a summer romance.
Mac and Roes story is a lovely enjoyable read. They are such sweet characters that you can't help but love them.
I felt the author did a great job of portraying these characters as 'real'. I found the story to be believable. When we were younger didn't we all hope for a summer romance?
This is my first book by this author but it won't be my last. I highly recommend this story especially to young adults.
All I needed while reading this book was a beach! It was such a great summer read. I fell in love with Roe. I loved the beginning setting in Myrtle Beach because that's my summer vacation spot. They both had a lot of challenges to get through. Some definitely surprised me and I had to keep reading. I felt like this was a great book on how to fight for love. Definitely recommending it!
It's captivating from the first sentence. Intense and full of love and passion. Life isn't easy and decisions can have regret but taking a gamble isn't always a bad thing.
This one is hard for me to rate. The first half or more seemed to go slow, it was good but slow. The last part was amazing, so full of action and suspense. Such an unexpected turn.

blurb:
One summer. One chance meeting. One devastating phone call.
MacKenna Trist is not happy about spending a month with her family in Myrtle Beach. She would rather be at home, hanging out with her friends, before starting her senior year of high school. That is, until she meets the guy staying in the beach house next door.
Roe Gamble is speechless when he first lays eyes on Mac. Normally, pretty girls are his specialty but not this girl. From this girl, he wants more. More of everything. More than she can give him. Most importantly, more time to show her how he feels about her.
But time is working against them in more ways than one.
