This reads more like a history textbook. Very detailed explanation of SOG. It is not a collection of war stories or events. The few mentions of actual people were great, but too few of them.
Skip this book! It’s an over simplified explanation of MACV-SOG that reads more like a textbook. There is so much reference material available, it can be a daunting task to scale it down, but it can be done. There are errors as well. (1) Maj Gen John Singlaub and Colonel “Jack” Singlaub are listed as two different people. They are the same person!!! The photo used that identifies “Col. Singlaub” is a later photo when he was Major General Singlaub. (His 2 stars are clearly visible on his left shoulder.). (2) HALO was an experiment to stealthily insert recon teams, not for “deep” insertion. (3) Sergeant Shriver is incorrectly listed as Gerry “Jerry” Shriver. His name is Jerry Michael Tate Shriver. His nickname was “Mad Dog”. (4) There was no witness to Sgt Shriver dying on the battlefield. He was listed as MIA on April 24, 1969. It wasn’t until 1974 until the US Army issued a presumptive finding of death. Read ANY book by John “Stryker” Meyer, John Plaster, Nick Brokhausen or any other SOG veteran instead of this book!! The series by Jason Hardy is incredible.
