When thunder shakes his house and rain pounds the windows, Bear is frightened. But comforting his Mama, Papa, and Floppy helps make the storm seem not so scary. Before Bear knows it, the storm has passed, because even storms need their sleep . . . and so do bears.

Stormy Night is a cute story about a bear that is frightened of a storm but, soon finds himself comforting his toy rabbit and parents too by singing the song his mother sung to him when he was a little cub.
We loved Stormy Night. It’s a great read – one that many children will be able to connect to because most will find themselves in the same predicament – and like us, we have been in this same situation. It’s a very realistic story but one that’s very sweet and enjoyable to read.
My daughter and I have read it several times since we received the book and it’s definitely a favourite at the moment. We love the illustrations to the story which are bright, bold and very colourful. And while the book has 40 pages it is a very quick read because each page on has a few words on – which is perfect for little ones who like short stories.
In all, Stormy Night is a big hit in our house and I’ll be definitely keeping an eye out for more stories by Salina Yoon.
Thank you to Bloomsbury Books for giving me the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an honest review.
Living in Florida means that we have pretty bad storms about 4-6 months of the year, so I really would see how this book could be used by parents and teachers to discuss ways to overcome storm anxiety. I could see a class that is being held (sometimes for hours) in class after dismissal because of a storm sitting around reading this book and discussing how a storm can be scary but that the end would come soon. I, being from tornado alley, had storm nightmares for years and storms still scare me, and I really think that a book like this would be a great read for kids that have the anxiety I have. I also love how Yoon had the little bear become the “strong one” during the storm to help him forget about what he is afraid of. This is a great strategy for helping kids forget about something that is scary.
Like always, Yoon’s illustrations are just so wonderful–I love how they completely cover the page and are so colorful. Also, Yoon also always captures her characters’ emotions so well! Her books are always a pleasure to read, and I look forward to getting them.
1. When I was your age, we had storms that I remember very vividly. I remember cuddling with my bear, named Bear, Bear. The story we are going to read is about Bear. He tries many different ways to cope with the storm outside. Whether it is with his stuffed animal, or hugs with Momma bear. Stormy Night is by Salina Yoon. She was born in Busan, Korea in 1972, and moved to the United States in 1976. There is a website that we can visit to learn more about her and the books that she has written. Let us talk about some questions before we ready our story. What different types of weather are we used to? What do you do when it storms outside? Do you have a stuffed animal? Do you cuddle or do you get scared?
2. My opening moves were sharing personal connection, and inviting a personal connection. I've also provided information on the author and back ground.
3. I chose this book because it talks about different ways in which children are able to cope with a storm. I wanted to have the children feel safe to express how they deal with a storm, and practicing for different things like a tornado drill. This relates to another story that we are reading When the Wind Blows. Both stories talk about weather, they utilize bright vibrant pictures, and the flow of the stories will be engaging.
Since the release of Found I have been eagerly awaiting the companion title. Last week it arrived at my favorite indie bookstore, McLean & Eakin Booksellers in Petoskey, Michigan. Stormy Night (Bloomsbury, January 6, 2015) written and illustrated by Salina Yoon covers a fear felt by many children. I know...I was one of them for decades.
I read this for "rainy day" storytime with my pre-k/kindergarteners and they enjoyed it. Both kids and their grown-ups chimed in to sing the bears' song with me. :)
I love the simplicity in Salina Yoon's drawings. Bright and clear and colorful and sweetly simple, but with cute little details. Here, Bear is soothing his bunny the way his parents calmed him down during storms - something young readers can easily relate to. I can see using this in a weather storytime or recommending to parents with more timid young ones (especially re: stormy weather).
I read this book to my son who is non-verbal autistic and GDD. It is the first book for the last few years we have been able to connect on every night❤️👍
It is simple and helps him understand love. He now can say a couple of words from the book on key, and has his own floppy named TED.
Thank you for such a wonderful book I sing the song to him whenever he is scared.
A great little book, a very fast read. Bear is frightened of the thunder so he hides under his bed, and tells his bunny toy, that every thing will be ok, soon bears mum and dad come into his room and stay with bear... 🐻 lovely book,
Such a cute story about a little bear who becomes scared one stormy night. He comforts his stuffed bunny (in order to comfort himself) and then his mom and dad. In the end, they comfort him and all is well. Enjoyed the bright, colorful pictures and the cute story.
This book brought back memories of when I used to feel afraid of storms as a small child. This is a sweet and reassuring book about a common childhood fear and also models a caring response for parents when kids are fearful.
Cute story of how Bear and his parents deal with a stormy night. Might be handy if you have a little one who is afraid of storms. We don't, but it's so cozy that my 3 1/2 year old loves it.
A lovely story about being scared of a thunderstorm. Bear has his best stuffy rabbit to keep him company but will need some additional help from mom, papa, and a book, to make it through this night.
