Exciting prequel with familiar characters
I was so excited when I discovered this prequel existed. I love The Darkwatch Trilogy and it was wonderful to return to this rich fantasy world.
My favorite part of the trilogy were the thimmaru, and I particularly loved the clash between their beliefs and the new demon based religion. Therefore, I was a little disappointed that these things are only slightly referenced in the book.
However, this is an exciting story and I couldn’t put it down. The author crafts the world and characters so well. I was drawn in by the intrigue as Dyran Wickstead (before he became King Obsidian) gathers together his team for the crown contest after the death of his father.
It was nice to see a different side to Irridia, and Garin, two characters who feature heavily in the trilogy.
I loved how the author so successfully implied the actions of the characters without spelling them out. There were lots of hints of the people that they would become.
A great fantasy read that I highly recommend. I hope there will be more stories about this world.
