There is no place like home. And sometimes, home isn’t a place at all.
Daciana DeRosa is content to live her pampered life, spoiled by her father. But when she finds a baby dragon in her yard, in a world where magic has long since disappeared, she has no other choice but to team up with three unlikely allies.
Nicolai Morelli, the Tin Man, is from a rival family. He wants nothing to do with Daci, but his ties to Oz are the only way she can get the baby dragon back to its home.
Matteo Rossi, the Scarecrow, goes along for the ride. Always looking for adventure and fun, he doesn’t expect to find himself in such a serious and troubling situation.
Leith Morgan, the Cowardly Lion, keeps everyone at arm's length. As they journey through Oz, he finds it harder to keep away from Daci.
Their journey to the Emerald City is fraught with adventure, dangers, magic, fate, and a growing connection none of them can ignore. As they travel down the yellow brick road, Daci learns she’s not as in control of her life as she once thought. But fighting fate turns out to be harder than it seems, and it’s a lesson all four of them must learn.
*The Last Dragon of Oz is a standalone fantasy Wonderful Wizard of Oz re-imagining. It is a why choose, meaning the main character will end up with more than one guy by the end of the book. Please check author's website for content warnings.
I’ll admit it. I’m getting a little fatigued with fated mates plots, but this book reminded me that it can still work when it’s EARNED. There’s actual character growth before any declarations are made, and that made the romance(s) feel grounded rather than just happening regardless of the characters' magical bond. There's an emotional one, too. Add in a fantastic group dynamic, spicy tension, found family vibes, and a baby dragon named Twig (who completely stole the show), and I was sold.
Mattie, my sweet, emotionally available Scarecrow, is hands-down my favorite. But there’s something to love in each of the core four. I really appreciated that this wasn’t just a straight-up romance journey but also a huge amount of growth for Daci. She starts out pampered and a bit self-centered, living a sheltered life quite unhappily. Over the course of the book, she’s challenged in numerous ways to confront her privilege, her assumptions, and her role in this bigger story. Her journey is the changes she goes through as she steps into more agency and starts to genuinely care for others, especially Twig. It’s a quiet, believable evolution as she faces the dangers of Oz.
And the way the group basically becomes Twig’s collective parental unit? My heart.
Representation-wise, this book quietly shines. There’s ace rep, a mute character who signs that is never sidelined, and even a realistic depiction of difficulty achieving completion (yes, that kind); something you almost never see in romantasy but absolutely should. It’s handled with care and honesty, and it deepens the intimacy instead of hindering it.
Also, the Oz nods? Super clever without being overbearing. This isn’t a retelling so much as a creative remix; familiar enough to enjoy the homage, but original enough to stand on its own. The mafia subplot was felt a little bit unnecessary, but it was fun, so no real complaints here.
Fun, heartfelt, spicy, and deeply character-driven. If you’re into why choose stories with heart, heat, and a baby dragon that’ll wiggle his way into your soul, The Last Dragon of Oz is absolutely worth the walk down the yellow brick road.

There might be no place like home… but what if home isn’t a place at all? 🐉💔
The Last Dragon of Oz was my first full-on Wizard of Oz reimagining, and it absolutely swept me off my feet. I didn’t realize how much I missed the why choose genre until this book—ugh, my heart!! 💘✨ If I were Daciana DeRosa, I honestly wouldn’t be able to choose either. (Luckily, she doesn’t have to 😉)
We meet Daci, the spoiled yet guarded daughter of the head of the Cammora, who discovers a baby dragon in her backyard—something no one thought could exist in a world where magic had vanished long ago. 🌱🐉 That moment kicks off a chain of events that throws her together with three boys from a rival family: Nico (the cold and intense Tin Man), Matteo (the carefree Scarecrow), and Leith (the brooding Cowardly Lion). Together, they must journey to Oz to return the dragon—Twig, the most adorable sassball ever—to where he belongs. 🛤️💫
Twig completely stole the show for me! I LOVED him so much. He was funny, stubborn, sweet, and fiercely loyal—the emotional glue holding this reluctant found family together. 🥹💖
What started as a tense enemies-to-lovers setup slowly unraveled into something so much more. These four had trauma, scars, regrets—and yet, as the story progressed, so did their healing. The character growth was gradual, emotional, and sometimes messy, but always real. Watching Daci go from pawn to protector, from spoiled to self-sacrificing, was just… chef’s kiss. 👑🔥
And the boys—OH. MY. GOD. I fell so hard and so fast for them: • Nico with his quiet protectiveness and soul-deep hurt 🖤 • Mattie, sunshine incarnate with a mouth that doesn’t quit ☀️💬 • Leith, the gentle, guarded giant with a heart of gold 🦁🥺
I adored how we got POV chapters from each of them, giving us insight into their struggles, histories, and the love blooming between them all. There’s so much emotion woven into this book—grief, longing, laughter, healing, love—and Whitney Spradling handled it all beautifully. 💫
🌪️ This book was packed with: • Magical worldbuilding (hello, fae courts and forgotten spells) ✨ • A journey through an Oz that’s both nostalgic and brand-new 💚 • Political tension between powerful factions 🗡️ • Found family dynamics 🫶 • And, of course, one baby dragon who absolutely owns the page 🐉
If you’re a fan of: 💛 Enemies to lovers 💛 Why choose / Reverse harem 💛 Found family 💛 Grumpy x sunshine 💛 Road trip quests 💛 Dragons and fae magic 💛 Emotional healing arcs …then The Last Dragon of Oz needs to be on your TBR yesterday.
Even though it’s a standalone, I honestly didn’t want to leave this world. The journey to the Emerald City was more than just a magical adventure—it was a slow unraveling of fate, identity, and choice. And that ending? Perfectly wrapped, but still left my heart aching for just a little more. 💚🌙
Thank you to the author for the review opportunity 🥹💌 I loved walking this new yellow brick road with Daci, Nico, Mattie, Leith, and of course, Twig. This was such a magical ride, full of heart, sass, pain, and love.
"Things are moving forward whether or not you want them to. Your mom put everything into action twenty-six years ago, and there is nothing any of us can do to stop it.”
Lately it seems, I have been slightly obsessed with the land of OZ I live near where the original books were written in Upstate NY, I am one of millions who went to see *Wicked* part 1, and recently read and reviewed Gregory Maguire's book "Wicked" that the show is based on. So all this to say when given the opportunity to read yet another OZ based book I jumped on it.
Daciana DeRosa only daughter of the head of the Cammora and Nico Morelli, the son of the head of its opposition are apparently fated mates but no one ever told them. Daci has been used as a pawn within factions most of her life. However. something is about to change.
Nico Morelli is an enforcer for his father. he and his close friends ,Mattie and Leith, are known as Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion. Each has a reputation for following orders.
Girasole and Oz are separated but at one time were one magical place until it was decided to separate them for the good of magic. Until now, magic didn't exist in Girasole anymore.
However, along comes a baby dragon and radical change begins, throwing Daci and the three men together...in Oz, trying to find their way towards adulthood and responsibility without anything more then a growing comradery and a baby dragon that needs to get to Oz to survive.
Above all else this is a story about maturity. From caring about a dragon to caring about each other, author Whitney Spradling takes us down a contemporary yellow brick road towards a very different outcome. Choices sometimes thrust upon the four characters are difficult but made that change them all. There are triggers to be aware of: each has traumatized history that is touched on, there is death, sexuality and negativity in spots. This is NOT the OZ of L.Frank Baum but it is an OZ for today and I hated to leave it. I hope this is not the last I hear of Whitney L Spradling. Highly Recommended 5/5
[ Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher as a gift. I chose to read and review it with no outside expectations and was not influenced in any way. These thoughts are my own]
I love a retelling or reimagining. I will automatically give a book a shot for that alone. Explain to me how this is the first Wizard of Oz reimagining, other than Wicked, that I have come across. Add dragons, fae, why choose, and MAFIA? It's like it's written specifically for me.
The bones of Oz are there but it's not beat for beat, giving the author more room to play around in the world and make it her own. Daciana (our Dorothy) and Nico (the Tin Man) are from feuding crime families in the Camorra. Matteo and Leith work alongside Nico, their best friend and chosen brother. When Daci finds herself in possession of a baby dragon, they must all work together to save him.
The enemies to lovers arc felt like it had weight to it. Daci and Nico had valid reasons to despise each other and the speed at which they got used to their need to work together and learned what each other personally stood for besides family loyalties was slow and totally believeable. Matteo was the perfect balance to Nico to keep me from getting too frustrated about stubborn arrogance. Leith is perfect and I will hear no opinions otherwise.
This was a modern and shockingly fresh take on Oz. This book dragon recommends.

Thank you so much to the author @whitney_spradling_author and @rrbooktours for providing me with a copy of this book for the purposes of review. My thoughts are, as always, my own and honest.
The Last Dragon of Oz was my first Wizard of Oz retelling, and I couldn’t have picked a better introduction. The blend of familiar fantasy with a fresh, romantic twist pulled me in right away—and the fact that it’s a whychoose made it even better. Daci’s journey is full of tension, magic, and heart, and honestly, I wouldn’t want to choose either if I were her!
Each of the love interests brought something unique to the story, and their bond with Daci felt both natural and intense. The world of Oz was reimagined in a way that felt dark, whimsical, and completely immersive. Add in a baby dragon with attitude and a cast full of chemistry and emotion, and this book quickly became a standout. I loved every step down this new yellow brick road.
I loved this reimagining. Rival Mafia families. Fae. Magic. Dragons. Fated mates. Daci is such a strong FMC behind her vapid princess persona. She has gone thru some major trauma. Nico being forced to be the family assassin. He has fae best friends but she has no one. I loved the way Mattie brought her out of her shell. And the interactions between her and all the MMCs were perfection. The end was crazy but I loved every minute of it. So good.
4.5 stars This is a new author to me and I certainly want to read more. I picked this up due to The Wizard of Oz being one of my favorite books/movies when I was little and Whitney didn't dissapoint my adult brain with her imagination.
I got this book at dreaming dirty in Ann Arbor MI, and I haven’t been able to put it down. I devoured it, and loved the banter between the characters. Anything with dragons is a go for me lately, and this did’t disappoint.
A super fun and spicy why choose romance. I loved the Wizard of Oz lore and love how the author made changes to make them suit her story! Highly recommend!
This was an amazing retelling. While keeping the elements of Wizard of Oz it brought in mythology and fae elements. I enjoyed seeing Daci’s journey and the guys all come together
So I'm pretty sure this was my first full-on Wizard of Oz reimagining, and I really enjoyed it! It's been a while since I've read a why choose and oh how I've missed it! Literally, if I was the fmc Daci, I wouldn't be able to choose either 🤣. In addition to that, my favorite trope being included - enemies to lovers - was just the cherry on top! I enjoyed the Wizard of Oz vibes and getting to know the characters. From our fmc Daci to the three drool-worthy mmcs, Nico, Matteo, and Leith. I liked how there would occasionally be chapters thrown in from their points of view as well. And don't even get me started on the most adorable-est little dragon baby Twig. Ughhh, my heart! This story had me sold at why choose, enemies to lovers, and dragons! I enjoyed adventuring through Oz and reading about the different creatures and fae who inhabit it. For some reason, I went into this one thinking it was going to be part of a series. It's actually a standalone, and although I do think it wrapped up nicely, I'd totally love more of this world and the characters. I recommend checking this one out sometime if it sounds like something you'd enjoy!
