Margaret writes fantasy for young adult readers. She lives near Cincinnati, Ohio, and when she's not reading or writing she enjoys drawing, watching documentaries, making pudding, gaming, and exploring the outdoors in search of toads and mushrooms.
Now that this has found its way to Goodreads (and was previously shared only to my Instagram), I wanted to leave a quick note about what it is, and more importantly where to find it! A Winter's Favor is a holiday themed short story set between the events of Sorcery of Thorns and Mysteries of Thorn Manor. Written from Silas's point of view, it tells the tale of how the glamorous dressmaker Lady Tremayne came to owe him a favor. It was posted in five installments over the holidays free to read on Archive of Our Own - an idea I borrowed from the magnificent Margaret Owen, whose Little Thieves short story collection The Fallow Year is now complete.
I apologize in advance to any readers hoping to see more of Nathaniel and Elisabeth. They don't have on-page appearances in this story, though they're often in Silas's thoughts. I hope you love Lady Tremayne as much as I do; she sprang to life in my imagination as I was writing Mysteries of Thorn Manor and hasn’t left me since.
Though the holiday season is over, my inspiration for writing this feels more relevant than ever - a wish for a moment of comfort, solace, and light in a world that is often dark. I hope this short story feels like a hug if you need one, and a visit home for anyone whose heart found a place in Sorcery of Thorns.
Margaret never ceases to bring me a healthy dose of magic and laughter, while also putting me on the edge of my seat! This story was absolutely delightful in every way, and left me smiling and squealing over and over again (and there are only five chapters!). I will be rereading it all again tomorrow, for it was simply too good to only be read once.
A Winter's Favor is a short story by Margaret Rogerson, set between the events of Sorcery of Thorns and Mysteries of Thorn Manor. It takes place about a week after Silas’s return and is narrated entirely from his point of view. The story was released for free on Archive of Our Own in five installments from December 21 to December 25, 2024, with one chapter published each day leading up to Christmas.
This very short story, just five chapters long, focuses on Silas and Lady Tremayne, whom we briefly met in Mysteries of Thorn Manor. It has a touch of murder mystery, though it’s quite brief. In Mysteries of Thorn Manor, we learn that Lady Tremayne owes Silas a favor, this story explains why. However, don’t expect to see Nathaniel or Elisabeth; they’re only mentioned. If you’re a fan of Lorelei, though, you’re in for a treat.
I thought it was okay, but it took me about a month to finish because it didn’t always hold my attention.
“I am not what I once was, but perhaps that is for the best.”
Wow, what did we do to deserve a Silas original adventure story set between SoT and MoTM?
It's been a while since I've read these books, so some of the cameos were lost on me, but this was a delightful read! (I probably should've waited to read it in December, since this is a Christmas fic, but I couldn't wait.) Silas developing his own friendships and pretending not to care when he so obviously does is the greatest delight! And the lead-in to MoTM here was very nice, too.
bruhhh more silas content. yes mfing please. i ate this up, i just love silas.
guys this was five chapters, take the rating with a grain of salt. only read it if you're missing silas. this just reminds me that i should reread sorcery of thorns.
Wow, i loves this little unnecessary piece of text. How can Margeret Rogerson make everything matter, no matter how long or short the story is. Please Continue writing forever, because i will for always be one of the first to read your books. ( if i realize one was published atleast lol)
As always, Margaret manages to stuff the perfect amount of cozy intrigue into the perfect amount of pages. Loved this little side jaunt in this wonderful world
Spoiler review I can’t believe this was only 5 chapters long. I absolutely love Silas and this book solidifies that love. I understand his character so much better after reading it. This book shows just how much he loves Elisabeth and Nathaniel. It shows just how much of a sacrifice it is for him to choose to not to give into his natural Demon instincts. I didn’t realize that he gave up power when he decided to only take one day of life from the duo. And he doesn’t regret one thing. He seems more human. I love that he can see people’s souls. I also love Lady Tremayne! She is a good soul and came from a tough background. I love her and Silas’ banter so much. I was cracking up. I love seeing more of Brassbridge. Both the magical shops and the ugly factories. I highly recommend reading this book if you’ve read the first two. I think it really adds to Silas’ character. I grew to love him even more and now understand his actions in the House of thorn novella. It has a little bit of a Christmas vibe too
SPOILERS and book notes: “To a mortal accustomed to perceiving a human’s body rather than the burning flame of their soul,” This sentence means that demons judge by our souls rather than outward appeared just like Christ! I love that Lady Tremayne is Silas’ friend and she treats him with no fear even if: “Reflected in the parlor’s many mirrors, his black half-cloak made him look like a visitation from death standing among the bouquets of peonies and pink velvet settees.” They are opposite! She big and loud and he quiet and dignified. She likes attention and he hides in shadow. But they love each other and both love fashion even if they usually differ in taste. “At first, the fact that she had seen so readily through his disguise had unsettled him, but now that he knew her it came as no surprise. Like him, she was an outsider, accustomed to seeing the truth of things beneath the artifice of fine stitching and a well-tied cravat.” I love that they always criticize their outfit choices: ““Black is a practical color, Lady Tremayne. It hides a multitude of sins.” This is so true. Black cloth hides spills but black and darkness also hides sins like pornography or affairs. Bad things happen in the dark. So turn on the light! (Christ and the spirit) The mystery involves children dying in factories. They work 12 hr shifts. It’s like the Industrial Revolution time in America. I love their stroll down the street with village shops like diagon alley. Their bickering is top notch. “Just because something is new doesn’t automatically make it hideous.” “There is style, and there is spectacle. If I wished to see costumes, I would buy a ticket to the opera.” This earned him a whack on the shoulder from the end of Lady Tremayne’s stole.” They are in the poverty section of Brassbridge’s industrial district now. “The suffering that pervaded the air was as sweet to Silas’s senses as the bakery had been to mortals passing by. He ruthlessly suppressed his hunger, remaining alert for signs of a demon.” Silas is a demon whose natural instinct is to do evil. But he fights that natural demon and CHOOSES good. It’s just like us fighting the natural man. I forgot that Silas can glamour (people see what he wants them to see) and iron is a weakness. And at the factory there is a lot so it dulls his senses. An example of Silas seeing people’s souls: “an overseer paused on the iron skyway bridging the two buildings above. His life force was a low, dull-burning flame, sullen and oily, so unlike the scintillating brilliance of Lady Tremayne’s that it might as well have belonged to a different species.” The overseer of the factory: ““How on earth did you know he was embezzling?” “His shoes and waistcoat were expensive beyond his means. A guess only, but his kind is tiresomely predictable. One might accuse such a man of nearly any petty crime and strike true.” all this reminds me of the Fork Factory from wingfeather saga. The dead girl: ““The creature who killed her is a type of lesser demon called a goblin. They have an unusual resistance to iron, and use this to their advantage. Only a sorcerer or another demon is capable of hunting them down—and both would have difficulty pursuing them here.” This is so interesting about child labor: “Do you know of anyone who might have wished Edith dead?” Hard tears glittered in Lady Tremayne’s eyes. “Only the whole world. This awful city. Everyone wishes her dead and every girl like her without knowing it, every time they buy a box of matches or a new pair of gloves from the department store—and yes, I’m aware of the irony.” Bitterly, she touched the wrist of her gown. “If girls died for this, I might as well make it beautiful.” Aw!! Mr Hobs (Lord Ashcroft butler and goblin in Sorcery of thorns) is the villain!! When Silas cut his wrist to summon the demon it didn’t heal as fast as normal. Awww!!! Does this mean Silas is slowly becoming human??? Bc they summoned him using his human name Silas instead of his demon name?? Lorelei is the demon they summon and she hates the latest fashions too haha. “Does seeing me like this make you feel better? Well, it shouldn’t. You look ghastly.” “Good afternoon, Lorelei.” “No, it isn’t. It’s vile. What are those?” Her attention had fixed on Lady Tremayne’s sleeves, which she was gazing at in undisguised horror. Despite himself, Silas took a perverse pleasure in informing her, “I am told it is the newest fashion.” “Please tell me you’re going to kill her.” Look at all that Silas gave up! And that he is choosing to side with humans! He is like the Cullen family from Twilight! ““Just because you’ve chosen to live like a monk doesn’t give you the right to judge the rest of us. Everyone despises you, you know; they’ll tear you limb from limb given half the chance. Why side with mortals? They’ll never like you. Never trust you—” a servant of lord Ashcroft that knew of the goblin demon is using him for his own end. (The factory overseer) he pays the demon with the humans lives of his workers. And Silas killed him after he told him the den of the demon behind the clocktower! Look at this note! Silas’s ‘peculiar tastes’ refer to a detail revealed in an annotation of the French Silas Edition, that he prefers the taste of virtuous souls and will often refuse to consume a mortal’s life force if he deems it lacking, an almost unheard of habit among demons. The demon kidnapped miss tremayne! A new location in the city called Staircross Avenue ! “ Due to some quirk of the city’s topography, wayward magic had a tendency to accumulate in Staircross Avenue from the run-off that seeped from the Old City and the historic sorcerers’ manors in Hemlock Park. Street signs swapped names without warning, flowers bloomed out of season, and perhaps most notoriously, the district’s clocks exhibited a stubborn tendency to run backward or keep foreign time.” The clock tower: “Some insisted that it was sentient; that its seemingly random months and moon phases were in fact prognostications in code.” Just like Thorn Manor or Royal Library. He killed the goblin! But got injured. HE is so tempted by the lady’s soul but he refrains just like Edward does with Bella. Look at this! “He couldn’t devour a human’s life force without first securing a bargain, but mortal flesh and blood still provided nourishment, simply in a less pure and concentrated form. Such appetites were normally the province of lesser demons. But having taken only a day of life from his master and mistress each, it was the only option if Silas wished to regain his former strength—which, to his relief, he found that he did not.” He sacrificed power when he made the day bargain!!! He admitted to the lady how much he loves Elizabeth and Nathaniel!! ““Last year, I killed a man to protect two mortals who are dear to me. He was not the first, nor will he be the last. Mr. Hob was another shadow of that time—a shadow that might darken the door of those I love. They would be able to deal with a matter like this themselves if necessary, but it would trouble them.” “As it doesn’t trouble you.” He inclined his head in a slight bow. “I would have them live in the light for as long as they can.” This last sentence leads right into mysteries of thorn manor!! He messed with the wards lol to get them married. The two people he loves! “As he passed the florist’s window, he paused, studying the wedding bouquet at the center of its display. Then he smiled and continued onward, his next plan already taking shape in his mind.” I love this about lady Tramayne and Silas: “One day, Silas walked into her shop. Not because of the wares, but because he’d sensed a soul inside—Lady Tremayne’s—whose life force was of a remarkable brilliance matched only by a handful of people in the city, out of Brassbridge’s population of tens of thousands. The two saw through each others’ illusions and went on to become something resembling friends”
not me running to read Silas’ short story after saying he shouldn’t have returned 😂 (not mad about having him back!) seeing him care for Elisabeth and Nathaniel is just 🥹, loved the little adventure and his relationship with Lady Tremayne!
This little glimpse into Silas' life takes place after "Sorcery of Thorns" and before "Mysteries of Thorn Manor", when he calls in a favor from dressmaker Lady Tremayne. "A Winter's Favor" takes us on a moving quest to uncover how he earned that favor in the first place.
The fact that Margaret Rogerson uploaded this story to AO3? Iconic behavior. I was thrilled to get one more look into the Thorn household - especially into the soul of Silas. Sure, we got a taste of his perspective in the epilogue, but a whole short story? The goddess has blessed us!
I appreciate the deeper look into Brassbridge's worn edges - the suffering side of a city built on magic, but fraying beneath it. That grit added real weight to the story, and to Silas’ role in it.
My heart melted every time Elisabeth or Nathaniel came up. Would I have loved to see them all together on the page again? Obviously. But somehow, this was enough. Just pure Silas in his many shades. Lady Tremayne's banter with Silas was entertaining, but what stayed with me was the emotional depth - knowing where Silas stands, what his motivations are and how he experiences the world. The final message he leaves Lady Tremayne? Touching and unexpectedly him.
And of course, the story ends with another perfectly Silas moment, giving a sly nod to "Mysteries of Thorn Manor". Love him now, and I'll love him three hundred years from now! What a character.
AHHAGAGGAGAHAHAH OH MY GOD I DIDN'T KNOW THIS EXISTED *panic attack* I will never adore any series as much as I love Elizabeth and Nathaniel and Silas. I really don't know why Margaret Rogerson isn't getting more recognition for her work; every single books I've read, none ever come close to the amount of value that the SoT holds for me. These short couple of chapters are so lovely TvT I wanna reread SoT againnnnnnn. Also I actually kinda miss Lorelei too hehe that was nice seeing her, still such a b- bad demon.
Last year, I killed a man to protect two mortals who are dear to me. He was not the first, nor will he be the last. Mr. Hob was another shadow of that time—a shadow that might darken the door of those I love...I would have them live in the light for as long as they can... As he passed the florist’s window, he paused, studying the wedding bouquet at the center of its display. Then he smiled and continued onward, his next plan already taking shape in his mind.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MARGARET ROGERSON I LOVE YOUUU Silas babyy TvT what a funny, cleverly humorous, trippy 1.2
A stunning addition to the Sorcery of Thorns world. I am awash with the humanity Roberson puts in her stories dressed up in a digestible sauce of humor and fantasy. I started the first book for the magical library and cute sorcerer, but stayed for the honest, trustworthy, and pure characters.
I wasn’t a fan of Mysteries of Thorn Manor but these few Silas chapters have reignited my love for the world and its characters.
I didn't realise just how much I needed a story completely from Silas perspective....now I need 20 more STAT!!!
But seriously, this was an interesting addition that tied up a loose end from the main series, gave more context for the novella & progressed the character's purpose in the story moving forward.
I really don't want to leave this world because I love all the characters so much (Silas saying Nathaniel & Elisabeth are dear to him🥹🥹🥹🥹)

'a sorcery of thorns' is one of my favourite reads of last year, and i had no idea that there existed another novella featuring silas. as with most novellas, it is incredibly difficult to rate this fairly, but i really enjoyed it! it will not have a lasting impact on me, but it was cute while it lasted and i love to get some insight on silas, since he is such an interesting character.
I don't see the use for this story or the connection to the main book, but it was fun while it lasted I guess. Margaret also just could've fused this short story and mysteries of thorn manor into a real book with some additional work. So, overall I find it useless but fun.
Dnfed because I was struggling to read it in the format it’s written. It took me 2 days to read a chapter and a half because i’m used to swiping on my kindle rather than scrolling. If this is ever released in a format I can send to my kindle I will come back to it
