What do Nostradamus and the book of Revelation have in common? Why are the forbidden Gospels not in the Bible? Why do the Catholics have a different Bible than the Protestants? What happened in the missing 25 Years of Jesus' life? Most importantly of why does any of this matter when I wake up tomorrow morning?
I picked up this book because I listened to the author being interviewed on the Skepticality podcast. The topic was intriguing and the author seemed to have an interesting viewpoint, so I figured I'd give it a try.
Despite the two-star rating, the book isn't bad. I wanted to like it. However, it really needed a good editor or proof-reader. There are a lot grammatical and typographic errors. It's not pervasive - the author is obviously able to write clearly - but it reads like a first draft. There are lots of poorly formed sentences that are clearly the result of reworking during the writing process. It got to be really distracting in some places. Fixing that would get it another star.
Aside from that, the book is easy to read. It's a little light on content, but that is to be expected given how short the book is. It only covers five questions, one per chapter: 1) Nostradamus vs. Revelations 2) The Forbidden Gospels 3) Catholics Have a Bigger Bible 4) Can Evolution and the Bible Coexist? 5) The 25 Missing Years of Jesus' Life None of these chapters delve into the topic at any great depth and the chapters are a little disconnected. More sophisticated readers who have some familiarity with the history of Christianity and the Biblical criticism are unlikely to learn anything new from it. However, it's a quick read and the style is light and casual, so this book would probably be a good introduction for someone who has never thought about these topics before.
