Vanishing in a Puff of Logic: The Tediously Charmed Life of RegretMeNo(t) the Elven Wizard

Rate this book
Vanishing in a Puff of Logic is the story of one neurotic gamer's attempt to win at Nethack while tripping on shrooms.

On a slightly deeper level, the story is about that same gamer's desire to triumph as a female elven wizard who is, literally, naked.

And on an even deeper level . . .

Let's face it. There is no even deeper level.

The characters don't have any real psychology; they just banter about how to play a video game. As the book's sub-sub-title indicates, this is more tutorial than fan fiction. Unfortunately, the book only covers up to the Sokoban puzzle, which is placed relatively early in the game of Nethack, and the book ends with the line "To be continued..." The downside is that you have to already be experienced as a Nethack player to understand any given sentence in this book, and if you're experienced enough to understand the language of the book, you don't need instructions up to Sokoban.

If you've ever played Nethack and you like fantasy novels, check this out because it's awesome.

Great book for avid nethack fans, to everyone else it probably seems like "ZELGO MER".

By far, this is the only Nethack tutorial masquerading as fanfiction I've ever read. It's a nice romp so far, and I'm excited about the sequel!
