Nightworld Academy #5.5

Nightworld Academy: Magia de Blackwood

Rate this book

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. This series is a slow-burn sweet why choose romance. Perfect for lovers of books with a strong magical heroine who grows into her powers, swoon-worthy guys who love and protect her, and a supernatural world filled with magic, romance, and mystery. Welcome to Nightworld Academy (Ravenwood Academy to the outside world). At this academy, that is attended by witches, shifters, and vampires, one student's bloodline will be their salvation or a curse. This is a short prequel to the Nightworld Academy series. This book is part of the Nightworld Academy series and focuses on Matt and Amelia's relationship and the events that unfold before Maeve attends the academy and after. The events are mentioned in the series but this books goes into more details from their point of views. Blackwood magic could destroy Matt Kohler’s life. He is the academy's most gifted elemental witch. The guy with the big magic and the bigger ego who never gives Amelia the time of day, until he’s forced to work with her. Now they’ve discovered they share a rare witchbond and a deeper connection than most. Matt doesn't care about breaking academy rules, and he faces expulsion and time at Ravenhold Reform Academy if he steps out of line again, but Matt's magic is more than disrupting class with clever spells, he's found the Blackwood grimoire, and she’s terrified she’ll lose him. He promised her that he'd stop, but when Blackwood magic gets a hold on you, life changes. His decisions lead to shocking consequences, and now she doesn’t know where he is. People don't understand that life without him tears her apart, and she’s not staying at the academy while he's in danger. Nobody will expect the quiet, inferior witch to take a risk, but when she’s with him, she’s more powerful than they think. All bonded witches will do anything to be together, to keep each other safe, and the consequences don't matter to either of them. She has allies outside the academy, but are the people offering to help her friends or enemies? And if she does find him, will he be the Matt she knows or a different one controlled by the magic he tried to escape? Blackwood magic destroys lives, but she won't let their evil destroy hers. So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I can’t wait for the final book on May 13, 2024. In the meantime I am going to read Ravenhold Supernatural Reform Academy. I highly recommend to everyone.

This story starts before Maeve arrives at the Academy. It is the beginning of Amelia and Matt's story, I'm sure we will see even more of them in the next book. Matt is a powerful witch and he feels constrained by restrictions put on him by the Academy. He is on probation worth a threat of confining him at Ravenhold if he steps out of line again. He is under constant supervision and tasked with working on the drama production. Amelia is supposed to keep him busy assisting her backstage. She has always had a crush on him, but he doesn't know it. He has always been interested in her, but kept his distance as she seemed uninterested in him. Amelia feels her magic is weak and she struggles to keep up in her classes. One night Matt convinces her to combine her magic with his to speed up the backstage cleanup - and a witchbond is born.

Find out what happens when Matt tracks down the Blackstone grimoire and begins to memorize spells from it, you might remember this little jewel of a book from when Jamie found and used it. Let's just say that things are not going to end well for Matt. Amelia tries to stop him, but to no avail. Ravenhold it is. Until asomeone offers him a way out. So what's the catch?

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Magical intrigue! (Amelia and Matt's story!!!)

Yay!!! I love this peek inside a pair of characters within NIGHTWORLD ACADEMY series. At last we get to see deeper into the relationship of Amelia and Matt. How their romance started and blossomed, and what actually happened to get him into Ravenhold. Up to and including how he finally got out, and all the players involved. Tons of goodies for any fan of this series. Personally I think one need to have read the NIGHTWORLD ACADEMY series first in order to understand all the main players, and the subtext. However I guess it could be read without having read the other books. In true LJ Swallow fashion there's oodles of magic, snooty academy kids and caste systems within said academy....followed by caste systems within adults in the magical world. Good vs evil takes on new meaning in this exciting read!! I've long loved the character of Amelia, and it's fun seeing the other characters from the main series through this new perspective. Have fun!

Absolutely loved this although because i am so used to the rest of the series it took me a while to settle with the storey being told from Matt & Amelia's perspective at the beginning but once i got used to it i was well and truly hooked!
This is really one of my most favorite YA series this year and is very well written with an amazing storey forming part of the academy series but as a side step - I really think Books 1-4 of the Nightworld Academy need to be read before you attempt this one otherwise alot of things wont make sense.
This book shows how Matt & Amelia become close and you can feel how strong their witch bond is and i love that we can make the journey of how they get back together with them.
This book also adds context to things going on in the world outside the Academy plus has
Some interesting new Characters which hint at a possible spin off which would be amazing.
As usual really well written with a wonderful storey line plus plenty of twists and turns to keep your imagination captivated!

Matt is the most powerful witch at the Academy, in fact he is better than some of his teachers. The problem is impulse control. Amelia is a witch with limited power and one who suffers from self esteem. She tends to hind in the background. What they don’t know yet is that each have a secret crush on the other. Things rev up as Matt gets in trouble and things begin to spiral out of control.

This is a story from the Night World Academy series focusing on two characters and their struggles and romance. I think the characters were well defined and interesting complete with strengths and weakness. The emotional drama occurred as they struggled to overcome their internal struggles and external obstacles while beginning to develop a relationship with each other. The narrative and dialogue were well done. I thought the storyline flowed quickly and smoothly keeping me engaged in the story until the end. I found this book interesting and look forward to reading more about these characters.

Whooaaa!!! Amelia and Matt’s story really surprised me! I’m so so glad that they’re finally together again and that by being together they strengthen each other and hold one another up! Their bond is truly special and I love how it is different to Maeve’s witch bond with Jamie. Their familiars were probably my favorite part because they are so powerful and unique. I hope that the more they strengthen their bond with each other personally, the more their witch bond will grow, as will their powers and strengths and being able to control their familiars. I loved the little snippets of Maeve and her guys and I can’t wait for more of them in Term Six! I love this world and series! I’m ready to see the the Blackwoods fall and for the good to overcome the evil around them all!

I have been waiting for Matt and Amelia's story for quite a while, and this didn't disappoint at all. I love how strong their bond is and how they will do whatever it takes to get back together. They don't even let Ravenhold keep them apart. This book fills in the gaps of Amelia's disappearance in the Academy books and brings more to their story. When they are separated, you can feel their anguish as it jumps off the pages. I love the depth of their emotions and bond and hope we see more of them. It also introduces Dorian Blackwood and his story is the one I really can't wait for. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this wonderful world that LJ Swallow has created.

I liked this story and wanted to know what the whole deal was with Matt and Amelia before Maeve joined the academy. The timeline though doesn’t seem to make sense and I can’t exactly figure out how much time passes between everything. I thought they were in their first year and Maeve joined the academy a week late? But that doesn’t account for everything that happened with Matt to get sent to Ravenhold?

I do like the way that the author referenced another series she wrote in the same world. I think the world is really interesting, if the writing was a little better I think I’d read everything by this author without stopping.

Very interesting perspective on this series! I've been enjoying the Nightworld Academy series and this background on Amelia and Matt's story has been helpful. We get to see more of how Amelia is and what her motivations are, plus her connection with Matt. It is nice to get the insight of what happens when Amelia left the Academy too! Then to learn a bit more about all the crazy stuff going on in this verse is definitely good information to have! Worth a read if you like the Nightworld Academy series!

I really enjoy the nightworld academy and this instalment didn’t disappoint. I already loved Amelia in the books but you really get to know her better and the connection between her and Matt. You get to see how his live changes and hers and their special bond and how it strengthens them. Lost of new characters, lots of excitement with twists and turns. Can’t wait for book 2 😀

I enjoyed this very much. I always like to sneak a peak back into the pasts of characters. The bond between Amelia and Matt is very interesting and in retrospect it makes her actions in the previous books make sense.
Now I fear I’m in for a big reread.
Can’t wait for Term 6 and maybe more backstories?

Blackwood Magic was AHMAZING! I'm already pretty obsessed with all things Nightworld Academy but getting to know Amelia & Matt a little bit better/reading their story and seeing their relationship was a nice treat. Filled with plenty of twists and turns this was the perfect addition to one of my absolute favorite series! I will most definitely be re-reading this one a few times!

This book is the story of Matt Koehler and his punishment for illegal Blackwood magic use, his sentence at Ravenhold, and what happens next. Focusing on Matt and Amelia's relationship, it's a good book and fills in a lot of the blanks from the other Nightworld Academy books. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to them both next, now that they're caught up in this world.

Fantastic!

I loved this. I read the Nightworld Academy series first and this book can easily be read before or after. The series left me with so many questions about this couple that were answered beautifully here. Romance, danger and thrills delivered in L. J. Swallow's unique style!

Matt and Amelia's story

Gave me a much better idea of what Amelia is all about and introduces the complicated Matt. I would recommend for anyone who has read the main Nightworld academy books.

Blackwood Magic

I love that the author wrote a story about Matt and Amelia’s witch bond and budding romance. My only problem with the story is how it does not fit correctly in the timeline with the Nightworld Academy term books.

Darkness and revelations

This fills in what happens with Marta no Amelia, as well as given extra background that helps with the main series. Definitely read after book 5.
