This mystery novel would be good for middle grade or teen readers who are into marine biology or more specifically, turtles. On her sixteenth birthday, Alex's only birthday wish is that she get to volunteer with the Turtle Sanctuary and help protect Cataluna Island's vulnerable turtle population. She and her best friend Avery, feel an affinity for these beautiful sea creatures and think it's their duty to protect their nests and habitats. When they find some turtle she's with weird markings they know the turtles are in danger, but they don't know from who. Alex, Avery, and Maya (biologist) must get to the bottom of the mystery before any other turtles get injured or killed. It's an important story but could have used a lot more editing. A lot of very repetitive phrases, weird plot holes, and ridiculously easy "clues," made this story a little too simple. It's honestly more of a novella anyway, it's quite short. Final gripe, what does the cover have to do with anything? There is no underwater maze reef. The only thing in common with the story is that it features a turtle. The cover should match the illustrations included in the book. Important material, just needed more finessing.
"Shell Shocked" is an exciting ocean mystery that blends adventure, conservation, and coming of age themes beautifully. The story follows Alex, a passionate young girl determined to protect sea turtles on Cataluna Island. From the first chapter, I was drawn into her world. Her love for marine life, her struggle to break away from family expectations, and her growing sense of purpose.
One of my favorite lines was: “We’re not here to change the world all at once. We’re here to change it one turtle at a time.” It resonated deeply, reminding me that even small efforts can create a big impact. The book made me reflect on how human actions affect marine life, and it left me with a newfound appreciation for conservation.
With vivid descriptions, a suspenseful plot, and strong characters, Shell Shocked kept me hooked. It’s a great read for anyone who loves mystery, the ocean, or stories about standing up for what’s right.
Shell Shocked is an exciting and inspiring story about protecting sea turtles. Alex, Avery, and Maya love the ocean and work hard to save turtles. Alex joins a rescue center and learns how important it is to fight for what you believe in.
I really enjoyed this book because it mixes adventure with a strong message about nature. One of my favorite parts was when Alex helped release a rescued turtle—it was a beautiful moment. The story felt real, and I could connect with the characters. If you love animals and adventure, I highly recommend this book!
The story follows Alex, a determined teen who wants to protect sea turtles instead of joining her family’s boating business. The mystery starts when a turtle with strange markings washes up on the beach. It leads Alex and her friend Avery into a dangerous investigation. I loved how the book mixed adventure with real environmental issues. We learnt about turtle conservation along with being on the edge wondering who’s behind the mysterious injuries. The setting felt so real, like I was running along the beach with Alex, feeling the salty breeze. If you love mysteries , this one is definitely worth a try.
When she turns 16, Alex starts working with the local animal sanctuary to help save turtles who have been injured due to human interactions. Her friend Avery also tries to helps her. And that's pretty much it.
This is advertised as a mystery, but every plot thread or introduction of a possible storyline peters out to nothing. Bioluminescence? Mentioned once or twice, and then doesn't play any part in a mystery plot. Damage to turtles from boats? There is a lot left out that would have added to making a much better story. What damage occurred? How do they help them? Where's the excitement/drama/intensity? Does her family play a role in that problem? And when she finds out who the culprit is, the actual discussion or interaction must happen off the page, because suddenly everything is fine and all resolved. There's a strange man wandering at a party? And then nothing about him for the entire book until the very end, when he must be the "bad guy" but no explanation of why or how, but just knowing that his the villain solves the case even though they just all walk away after? So many plot points, too little tying up of loose ends and making a cohesive storyline. Lots of telling and preaching about a problem, and very little show and emotional connection with the reader.
The timeline of the story is very hard to follow. It reads as if it was only a day or two, but there are other things in there that lead to the story having taken place over the course of the entire summer. Alex is continually gathering volunteers to do something, but they just talk and not much is actually done. And most everything is talking about how horrible everything is and that they must do something to help, but that idea is repeated over and over again without any concrete solutions or action.
I think the intended age of this is YA, but it reads as a very simple and not well-plotted Boxcar Children mystery, all without the solving of any mystery. Very confusing.
Overall, this is not great. I was feeling it was a 3 star read until about halfway through when I realized nothing was coming together or moving the story along, and it never improved from there. It's a very superficial writing of what could be a great premise, but the execution is lacking. The entire book was about 4 cycles of everything's awful, let's meet and plan, and then it starts over. Not much else.
I received a copy of this through a giveaway from the publisher.
Kathleen Welton’s Shell Shocked: An Ocean Mystery introduces readers to 16-year-old Alex, whose passion for sea turtles transforms her summer into a thrilling yet treacherous adventure. Alex starts by volunteering at a local turtle rescue center, but her idyllic island life takes a dark turn as she and her best friend, Avery, uncover threats to the turtles she cherishes. Together, they navigate a dangerous mystery that puts both the turtles and their own lives at risk.
Welton captures the spirit of conservation beautifully, weaving Alex’s love for sea turtles into a compelling narrative. I particularly enjoyed the vivid descriptions of Cataluna Island, where the ocean’s beauty contrasts starkly with the shadowy threats beneath its surface. One standout moment for me was when Alex first encounters an injured loggerhead turtle, its scarred shell a haunting reminder of human negligence. The emotional weight of that scene stuck with me and underscored the importance of the book’s environmental message. Key moments, like the discovery of the mysterious markings on the turtles’ shells, carried significant intrigue, but some plot developments happened off-page or lacked depth. For example, Alex and Avery’s decision to confront the poachers directly felt rushed, and I found myself wishing for more buildup to heighten the tension. The stakes were clear, but the execution didn’t always deliver the urgency the story demanded. Alex is a relatable and determined protagonist, and her mentor, Maya, adds depth with her wisdom and wit. Avery’s role felt underdeveloped. His contributions to the plot were overshadowed by Alex’s larger-than-life drive, making him more of a sidekick than an equal partner in their shared mission. While their bond was endearing, I wanted more nuance in his character to balance the dynamic.
Shell Shocked offers an engaging tale for readers who love stories with environmental themes and strong-willed protagonists. The book’s heart is in the right place, and its vivid imagery and sincere message make it a worthwhile read. I’d recommend it to teens and young adults who enjoy eco-mysteries or are passionate about wildlife conservation. It’s a story that will make you think twice about the impact of human actions on the world’s oceans—and leave you rooting for every turtle that makes it to the sea.
Alex and Avery are two teenagers who live in the sleepy town of Cataluna Island. Every year tourists flock to Cataluna Island to enjoy the beaches, but Alex and Avery are focused on something much more important. They are both interns at the local rescue center, where they work to protect the island's turtles. When Avery finds a turtle washed up on the beach with an X written on its shell in red, he knows something fishy is going on. He tells Alex, and they investigate around town, but Alex and Avery feel like they are missing something. When another turtle washes up, they realize that someone might be deliberately trying to send a message. But who could it be? A tourist visiting? Or a local fisherman like Alex's own family? Whoever it is, Alex and Avery know they must stop it before too many turtles lose their lives.
Opinion: Overall, I really liked this book. It was interesting to read a book set in a town like Cataluna Island with lots of beach activities and tourists. I have never thought about how locals who live in touristy towns feel, so it was interesting to read Alex's feelings about her hometown. In addition, I liked how through Alex's work at the rescue center, the reader got to learn about what goes on inside a wildlife rescue center, specifically for turtles. The mystery was suspenseful, and I liked how there were multiple suspects throughout the story, so the reader could follow along and try to solve the mystery on their own as well throughout the story. Lastly, I liked how the author included black and white drawings of some of the scenes, as this helped me visualize what the characters looked like. This book is perfect for readers who like mysteries or ocean wildlife.
I was able to read this book with my students over a week. Alex and her parents live on Cataluna Island. They want her to join their family business, but she has other plans. She has turned sixteen and is volunteering at the local marine rescue center. Her parents don't understand this. When she and her best friend Avery find a turtle washed up on shore with strange carvings in its back they set off to find out who did this. When the turtle disappears a few hours later the mystery deepens. Alex is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery. She, her mentor Maya, Avery and Captain Reyes rally the community to help save the turtles. For me this book resonated because I live in Sarasota, Florida. One of the first places I went to when we moved here many years ago was Mote Marine Aquarium. They work to rehabilitate turtles and other marine life. I am a teacher, and knowing I can bring my love of marine life and conservation and turn it into a lesson by sharing a wonderful book in my English class makes it even more special. A few years back I spent three weeks on Manasota Key. I got up every morning and took a walk along the beach. I met a woman who was walking and looking for more turtle nests because she was part of a group that monitored that beach. It was one of the best times in my life and I learned so much about turtles. This is the first book in this trilogy. I highly recommend it.
While the author's intentions to raise environmental awareness about protecting loggerhead sea turtles are noble, "Shell Shocked" unfortunately falls short in its execution. Despite the important theme, there are several glaring inaccuracies that detract from the book's overall educational value and plausibility.
The lack of research into proper sea turtle conservation practices is evident, such as depicting a rescue center housing hatchlings in tanks, which goes against their need for imprinting and natural ocean navigation. Additionally, certain plot points don't align with factual information, like the false notion that boat wakes can harm nests or that feral horses help protect turtle eggs.
Beyond the scientific missteps, the storytelling itself suffers from excessive telling, repetition, and an unresolved central conflict. While the book has the bones of an engaging eco-conscious tale, it requires significant developmental editing by someone well-versed in crafting cohesive fiction narratives.
With more rigorous research, tightening of the plot, and professional editing, "Shell Shocked" could potentially achieve its laudable goal of educating readers about sea turtle conservation through an entertaining story. In its current form, however, it misses the mark despite the author's good intentions.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The synopsis I read for this book talked about turtles with strange markings on their shells, mysterious bioluminescence, and an investigation led by friends Alex and Avery. So I was expecting puzzles and detecting, but it was really just a long PSA about tourists and poachers endangering the environment. The bioluminescence is only mentioned maybe once, and the strange markings on the turtle shells are just...gashes made by boat motors? I think? It was really confusing.
The author didn't seem to pay much attention to her own book as she wrote. The turtle with strange markings on its shell is similar to one Alex saw in the rescue center she works at, which I thought would end up being part of the mystery, but by the next day, the turtle at the center is never mentioned again. Other elements are discovered and don't go anywhere as well. And though I don't mean to diminish the real-world plight of wildlife being poached and killed by careless people, the tone of the book was just so much more dire than I felt that the story required. In the end, this felt like a passion project for someone who has lived on or visited an island like that in the book and is concerned about the wildlife there, which is fine if you're the right audience for it. I am not.
I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
