The Midnight Arrow

Rate this book
“Tell me a secret, little witch.”

Marion enjoys her quiet life of solitude in the shadowy woods of the Black Veil, where even the local villagers don’t dare venture. She sells her healing potions at the village market by day and tends to her otherworldly garden by night, caring for her magical bees and furry familiar, Peek, at their cottage.

Then, one moonlit night, she encounters a devilishly handsome male—with powerful wings, sharp fangs, and high fae-like beauty—shot through with a lethal poisoned arrow.

Under her healer’s oath, she’s bound by magic to try to save the mysterious stranger. But as she nurses him back to health, she begins to suspect that Lorik Ravael isn’t quite what he seems. He knows too much about the Black Veil, rumored to be the entrance to the Below, a realm of dangerous magic and soulless monsters. Yet she’s drawn to him, bewitched by his luminous eyes, seductive grin, and silver tongue of riddles.

But as their forbidden desire ignites, she fears Lorik is hiding darker secrets than she imagined—secrets that could cost her a heart she isn’t willing to give.

The Midnight Arrow was previously published in The Lovely A Monster Romance Anthology by Emma Hamm, Juliette Cross, and Zoey Draven. This edition includes a bonus short story and can be read as a standalone.

4 ⭐ I enjoyed this book so much and hope we get more stories set in this planet/realm!

"My beautiful little witch in the woods. You need to be appreciated. You need to be touched. I think you need to be loved."

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ cozy romantasy set in a haunted forest
✨ human healer FMC
✨ half Kylorr, half something else hero
✨ strangers to lovers
✨ she nurses him back to health
✨ he calls her “little witch” 🥹
✨ insta love
✨ forced proximity
✨ 2.5/5 🌶️
✨ he's a GIVER 🥵
✨ biting (he needs her blood to survive)
✨ fated mates
✨ magic
✨ keeping secrets
✨ third act breakup
✨ HEA
✨ TW: loss of loved one, grief, violence

My Thoughts:

This was such a wonderful cozy, spicy romantasy!

Marion and Lorik make an incredible pair. Marion is used to solitude, so Lorik’s presence shakes up her world in ways she never anticipated. His strength and quiet intensity stir feelings she thought were long buried, and reopens old wounds and fans the flames of desires she hasn’t felt in many years.

Lorik, on the other hand, is guarded about his past and keeps his distance. But it becomes obvious (to the reader at least) that they have two important things in common. Both are weighed down by duty and feel a sense of loneliness. The more time they spend together, the more those walls start to crumble. And while their duties will always be a part of their lives, a new kind of responsibility starts to take shape between them—a responsibility to each other - and with it, love.

I also enjoyed the world building! Allavar is such a unique place and I feel as if we've only just scratched the surface! I’m especially curious about the Below and Aeysara—there’s so much mystery there. I’m hoping we’ll get to explore it more in another story. Maybe one that follows Thela? 🤩

The reason I'm giving this 4-stars is because I felt like Marion was purposefully obtuse or avoidant (but this was clearly done so reveals weren't forced out early on). The reveals were a bit obvious - especially where Lorik was concerned. And I wish we could have actually spent time in the Below.

But regardless, this was a fun, quick read with a likable couple and some great spicy moments. Definitely add it to your TBR! And while this isn't part of Zoey Draven's Brides of the Kylorr series, I HIGHLY recommend reading Desire In His Blood first. Not only is it one of my favorite books in the entire world, but because the MMC in The Midnight Arrow is half Kylorr, it would help with visualizing him and understanding that aspect of his ancestry.

Cozy cottage-core romantasy but he is a smitten alien that can’t stop calling her little witch 🌳🏹🖤

“My beautiful little witch in the woods. You need to be appreciated. You need to be touched. I think you need to be loved.”

Marion is an introverted healer that lives in a forest cottage and tends to her magical garden & magical bees. Honestly…DREAM LIFE! Until one night she finds a wounded foreigner in the woods and slowly tends him back to health 🌳 Lorik is sus & definitely more dangerous than he looks but Marion is not afraid. How could she be when he’s just watching her garden while staring lovingly at her face! The man is down bad!

🏹 ultimate cottage core feels! the love she has for her garden & glowflies is so heartwarming

🏹 PRAISE! This man is her no. 1 fan!

🏹 he’s kind of a vampire but alien

🏹 secretive mmc with glowing eyes & horns

🏹 cozy smut vibes (new genre?)

I reeeeeally loved this couple! Lorik & Marion were so adorable I almost got a toothache. The romance & fantasy really played off each other to create the ultimate cozy romance. The story was fast paced & on the shorter side but that just made it that easier to read.

And the SMUT did not disappoint! Lorik was SHAMELESS and completely besotted, which I guess was a deadly combo 🌶️ I’m envious!

There were a few spelling mistakes here & there but it didn’t detract from the story.

standalone romantasy
independent fmc
sick bed 🛏️
tall, dark & handsome mmc
forced proximity
praise
grief & secrets
one bed
single POV

I liked it; however, this is one of those books where I wish there had been more pages not less. I felt like there could have been more to the story and more development for the main characters. The world building had great bones too.

The potential was there! I just felt it was lacking--something. Something was missing. Maybe a sense of urgency or something else to move the story along? It was languid pace, a warm and fuzzy book. Which isn't horrible, but the "story" didn't pick up until [almost] the end.

Not to mention there were some grammar issues here and there, but I can skim past that, if it isn't continuous.

4.5 stars!

Marion lives alone in a quiet cabin tending to the things that mean the most to her. She’s a healer and loves what she does but is lonely and unsure of her life. Then a wounded stranger that is otherworldly stumbles upon her cabin. Turns out he isn’t quite the stranger she thought and now she must tend to Lorik even when she burns for his touch.

Lorik is something else, secretive and enraptured by the lovely healer. Marion and Lorik spend time together and their chemistry burns bright but there’s so many questions surrounding their connection. That doesn’t stop them from trying to build something however.

“You live out here, alone. My beautiful little witch in the woods. You need to be appreciated. You need to be touched. I think you need to be loved.”

Marion is such a lovely and forgiving character. I adored her feminine yet fierce nature and the way she saw the world. Her character was written so beautifully. Lorik was the perfect hero and balanced sweet and filthy in the best ways. And there’s nothing hotter than Zoey’s sci-fi heroes.

“Look at me,” he purred, wedging another finger deep, joining the first and making me shiver. “Look over your shoulder and see what you do to me, Marion. See how hard you make my cock. See how much I fucking ache for you.”

The Midnight Arrow had me on the edge of my seat and waiting for the other shoe to drop and when it did, it broke me in true Zoey fashion. But the grovel was delicious and I was totally here for it. I do wish there had been more of an epilogue and another steamy scene at the end. But overall, this was a fast paced and emotional read about the choices we make in life and how they shape who we become and who we end up with. Super great story!

I first read this story in The Lovely Dark anthology but I had to read it again when I saw it was being published on its own. I missed out on buying the anthology so I jump at on getting my hands on this story. I loved this just as much the second time around. So I’ll going to steal the main points from my last review.

This book was really good. It somehow had the world building, detail and development that even some novels struggle to execute, all packed into 200 pages. It had the romance, the plot, the intrigue, the secrecy, heartbreak, spice, and everything you could even want. Even when knowing what was going on the second time around, it was just as entertaining.

This was such an interesting genre bending book. Part cozy fantasy witch vibe. Part sci-fi vampire alien vibe. Part cozy, but sexy and spicy. I would not be opposed to reading more books like this. I usually stay away from cozy witch books, but this kind? I’d definitely read more! Could be because I really like Zoey Draven’s style too.

Marion is a healer witch that has a magical garden with magical alien bees (or something like that)! And a protective animal that just reminded me of a feisty black cat. Enough said. One day sexy-ass Lorik winds up on her doorstep with a poison arrow sticking out of him. Well. What’s a healer witch to do, except take the man into her tiny cozy cottage and heal him. If sexy times happen, that’s just a happy coincidence. But as sexy Lorik is, he also has a lot of secrets to unravel.

For a small book there is some really good world building and a lot of emotion! I felt myself tearing up quite a few times. I would definitely read more books set it this universe.

"My beautiful little witch in the woods. You need to be appreciated. You need to be touched. I think you need to be loved."

This was a cute little alien-romance novella, from an absolute favourite Zoey Draven. This takes place on a new planet and isn't connected to any of ZD's other novels, but I think it would help if you had read the Brides of Kylorr for context.

I didn't enjoy this as much as ZD's full length novels and I really think that's just down to the fact that we didn't get as much page-space. Less room for world-building, less room for building the relationship between Marion and Lorik, even though what we did see of them was very cute.

A very intriguing read. It's no secret that I am a great fan of Zoey Draven's stories. And this one already seemed different from her other books from the outset. Now after reading it, I can confirm that the tone and writing style felt markedly different. More mature if I might say? The tone spelt a different kind of world building (though it is connected to the ZD universe), more eerie, more lyrical, more pure, with aching feelings subtly threaded through the tale. I liked it, it felt fresh and like I said intriguing.

The plot did not move in a very definite direction until the last third of the book (but I still enjoyed the journey and gladly went with the flow). Now, that final twist got me good even if I had caught the broad hints of what would be revealed. The chemistry and bond between Marion and Lorik was well explored and felt so tangible and genuine - which translated so well when the betrayal and the consequences hit. The resolution between Marion and Lorik developped organically, respecting the logic of their characters. It's a HFN but I do believe it's a fated HEA. Maybe there will be further adventures for them?

I think ZD has a solid lead in the realm she created in this new planet of hers. I can't wait to see how she will further explore it.

It was 4-5 stars up until the last 25%. This was great but the ending fell flat. I didn’t read the prequel about the MMC, just stopped being invested in the story.

POV: FMC 1st person, prequel at the end from MMC POV.
SERIES or STANDALONE: 1st in series, can be read as a standalone.
TROPES: M/F adult, human/alien romance.
SIZE: 229 inc prequel (last page) Kindle pages.
CHARACTERS: Lorik (age unknown) & Marion (late 20s/ early 30s?)

PLOT: 3.5 📚
ROMANCE: 4.5 ❤️
SPICE/STEAM: 2 🌶
DARKNESS/TRIGGERS: N/A 😈

DNF at 56%. This is a really sweet Kylorr male and human witch story… some intrigue, but too sweet and gentle and respectful for me 😄 I think this would be great if you need a romance that feels safe.

This was a short but compelling story about a vampire alien and a human witch. It was really sweet watching them come together, and I teared up over the twist.

My only complaint is that it really deserved to be longer. I want to know where they decide to make their lives.

I was genuinely so upset when I first started reading this because of the phrase “… the poison of their venom,” or whatever it was, but I felt like I couldn’t justify DNF’ing this after the first paragraph.
I’m glad I decided to stick it out because this was cute. The world was interesting, and the romance was nice. There were some things that irked me like repetitiveness, typos, and thinking that poison and venom are interchangeable, but overall it was fine.

I believe that this book had 4 star potential, but I don’t think I vibe with the author’s writing style.

Maybe I'm too critical of the MMC, but I could not get over the big reveal he eventually made. I was enjoying the book until that point, when I lost all faith in him and disliked the FMC for forgiving him.

This was a sweet little romantasy/alien romance with some serious deception. I like healer MCs in general and Marion was a good mix of very compassionate and fierce. Lorik was playful and protective. Lorik’s grovel was good and he did have reasons for what he did beyond being an asshole. I would have liked to feel mote invested in them being together.

Spice: 2/5

Triggers: violence, gore (beheading), poisoning via arrow, grief from sibling death, mentions of child abuse, family member of love interest illness, mentions of organized crime

A shorter story set in the same universe as the Brides of Kylorr this one had all the elements I love- Sci Fi Alien Fantasy Romance, forced proximity, cabin in the woods, wounded hero. And wow I just loved these two characters.

Marian has made a life for herself isolated in a dark wood where none of the villagers dare to tread. That's just fine with her- since the time she lost the one she called sister, she's happy to live alone. If it wasn't for the potions she sells at market as a healer, she would probably never leave her magical garden.

And then one night she hears a call of pain in the wood which she cannot ignore.

"... she encounters a devilishly handsome male—with powerful wings, sharp fangs, and high fae-like beauty—shot through with a lethal poisoned arrow. Under her healer’s oath, she’s bound by magic to try to save the mysterious stranger." (quote from the author's website)

He's handsome all right, but also kind, and in need and quickly finds herself inextricably linked to him as she gives him her life-giving blood.

But life is tricky sometimes, she knows that well, cultivating magical fireflies as she does for healing potions, and just as she draws out the poison from his wound, he draws out the old poison left in her soul from her sister's death.

And that's not all- he has a secret and it will cost her the very heart of her existence.

I loved this story. Even though the big reveal wasn't that hard to figure out- Marian pretty much knew it deep down all along- but it still made her feel betrayed and my heart went out to them. But what came after, what she gave up, THAT'S what made this story magical. From the fact he revealed everything in the end, to what she gave freely even though it did cost her so much, to the fact he never gave up on her. I love that.

I hope we get to see more along this line, because there was another world opened up here, and I want to see more of it.

This book had so much potential, I really wish it was longer. Cause half of it was just them having sex. But I wanted to know more about both of their sisters and the also how the heck a human was in this world?!?!

The prequel at the end in Lorik’s POV was almost more interesting, I wish we learned more about the Below and that world’s dynamics. It would have been so cool if they went on a journey to the Below together or if Marion met his sister.

I also didn’t like how he called her little witch LOL it made me uncomfortable.

This book was so cozy and fun!!! I love how the FMC’s work was described and how they got together. The pacing was wonderful and the MMC was such a simp (love). My only complaint is that we maybe didn’t get enough of the foreboding feeling leading into the conflict, but I almost didn’t notice because I was enjoying myself so much

3-3.5 stars

Although the twists/reveals were mostly predictable, I enjoyed the writing and banter between the two main characters. The lore/world building of the Above and Below was interesting and I wish there were more exploration of it, including a trip to the Below (I’m not counting the brief snippet we got from the bonus prequel “The Below King’s Hunter” because it didn’t really show much about life in the Below) and examining the way the magic has changed (kyranas/fates mates, glowflies and their plants, the braydus) and why the divide even exists or who has the power to visit each realm or use a portal.

The story felt pretty strong up to about the 75% mark, but the reconciliation/forgiveness was embarrassingly rushed. Further, Marion received a favor from the Below and so quickly used it to help the jeweler Merec but never even considered using it to help her and Lori be together or to make a substantive change in the way the Below and Above interact.

Vibes-wise I ate this up!! It was addicting and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. But some of the execution was confusing—like are they fated mates or not? What was Veras’ role in her sister’s death? Idk just lots of inconsistencies and I think this could have been really good with a better editor!

I want sure what to expect with this book, but I dove straight in and really enjoyed it.
It felt a little insta love really quick really fast with the FMC being a little naive.
I really enjoyed the world and would have loved more world building in this book.
I’d totally read more books in this series if there are more. Solid 3.75/5
