Secrets are uncovered. Gods interfere with the fates. A vicious darkness slithers out of the shadows. The drums of war start to shake the land of Ahland.
Sent running north, Maude and her friends try to regroup alongside new allies after their failed assassination attempts in Logi. In their defeat, their enemy—King Harald Helvig of the Kingdom of Flame—gained the power he needed to rule over all Ahland leaving them more hopeless than ever. Unsure of their next steps, they linger in the sanctuary that has been provided for them until distressing news reaches them. Throwing caution to the wind, Maude takes what she’s discovered about herself and uses it to free the only man she’s ever loved from imprisonment.
Herrick has nothing to do but spend his dark days agonizing over his failures—as a brother, as a General, and as a friend. The spark that has entered his life in the form of a fiery, short-tempered woman has changed not only the way he sees the world, but how he responds to it. She has awakened something that has lived in him for years but was never allowed to see the light of day. After living through what he has faced in the wake of his failures and the chains that still bind him, it might just be enough to let that darkness out.
Still reeling from the catastrophic mistakes made and friends lost, there is little hope left in all of them… until their collective fates bring them head to head with the ugly truth behind that greater power that is supposed to guide them in life.
In the highly anticipated sequel to Kingdom of Embers and Ruin, follow Maude and Herrick as they discover there was always more to their entwined fates than just their undeniable attraction. Will it strengthen them or fray the threads of their lives until both are unrecognizable?
Nadya (pen name: N.E. Valla) is a debut fantasy writer who works as an ICU RN by day and writes by night.
Born in Florida, Nadya was raised in a bilingual household with her first language being Swedish. Her Scandinavian roots heavily influenced her first fantasy series, Heirs of Fate, as Norse mythology and Viking history has always fascinated her. She moved to Pittsburgh, PA when she was 19 and now lives with her partner Nick and two cats, Nibbler and Captain Hook.
When she isn't working or writing, Nadya can be found curled up with a book, exploring new spots in her city, traveling to Finland to spend time with her family and other new places (when she can), and spending time at home baking, cooking, or competing for her house champion title in Mariokart.
An amazing sequel that picks up right where book 1 left us reeling.
This book is so much different than book 1, but not in a bad way! Whereas book 1 focused a lot on the developing relationship between Maude and Herrick, book 2 introduces A LOT more POVs and is much more character driven. After the events of book 1, each character is 'going through it' in their own way and it felt so important to hear from them individually. I loved being in their heads and experiencing that character growth alongside them.
In addition, we get a whole lot more plot-wise with expanded world-building and lore, discovered magic, secrets revealed and more questions left. There's action, there's emotional, gut-wrenching moments, there's slow burn tension as Maude and Herrick continue to figure their shit out.
One thing I think this author really excels at is pacing because she manages to write books that are 500+ pages that somehow never seem to drag or lull at any point. Book 1 and 2 had me hooked from the beginning and literally hanging onto every word, never wanting to put the book down.
I'm so in love with this story and these characters and I cannot wait for the next installment because I just know it's going to be a crazy ride.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an eARC. This review reflects my honest thoughts and opinions.
If you thought the trauma, grief, support, and healing were big themes in book one, well they’re even bigger in book two! So much has happened and we find our characters coping in both positive and negative ways. We see reversions where we thought there was healing and we see new chasms opening up where we thought the bonds were secure. But we also see new bonds and deeper connections. This all to an end that brings tears (both happy, sad, and closure) to our eyes.
I can’t divulge too much of even the plot because of spoilers but man, SO MUCH happens in this book that is EPIC. So much ground is travelled physically but also emotionally. The story is INTRICATE y’all. One that is so full of imagery and plot that when you go to your next read, you almost feel like half their book must be missing. 🤭 Valla’s sequel is angsty and the pining is real. It’s descriptive, deep, and beautifully intentional. Our found family of Vikings are vicious, protective, full of love, and out for revenge against the evil king AND the meddling gods. This book is not for the faint of heart. 🫶
Tropes you may find in DOSAC are slow burn to medium spice, multi romances blooming, forced proximity, more hidden identities, more world building and lore, prophecies, new enemies, touch her/him and 💀, 🔥 the world for him, hair tucks behind the ear, golden retriever MMC, elves and elemental magic, ptsd and grief rep, amazing found family, and another heart wrenching cliffy!
I am so thankful to Valla for letting me be on her arc team. I feel this series is one that’ll be labeled as a “legendary fantasy romance”.
I was so excited to be given the opportunity to ARC read Daughter of Shadows and Chaos as I have been dying for this sequel since I ARC read Kingdom of Embers and Ruin last year!!
Picking up where KOEAR left off, DOSAC jumps right in answering questions we were left with and giving us even more to think about and pick apart. I loved getting back into the Norse mythology and magic of this world and getting to know some new glader and characters throughout. DOSAC is multi POV giving us some amazing insight into some of our favorite characters and getting a more in depth knowledge of who they are and their emotions and actions throughout some of the previous books events as well as the continued action and chaos of this book. I think it was really impactful to get these POVs to see how they feel about what has happened and are coping with all the consequences and responsibility of events past and present. It’s amazing seeing their struggles and triumphs through their own thoughts and actions versus just Maude’s!
While Maude and Herrick spend majority of the book working through their continued issues, now trust being a major one, the tension between them is at an all time high. The teasing of this book with THREE different times of them going at it to stop and fight before getting there! The connection between them continues to grow stronger, despite their pigheadedness and anger with each other. Seeing Maude and Bryn’s relationship get to flourish was so sweet and I loved to hear Bryn’s view of her sister and her coping with losing Revna while struggling against feelings for a certain dark skinned elven shield maiden👀 Seeing Hakon fall into himself in his anger and grief throughout the book was frustrating at times but his character development in this book was the biggest out of them all and god do I hope the connection brewing keeps going (a throuple in our future???). Herrick’s battle with his experience when he was captured and his feelings for Maude about well… everything are a big focus on his journey throughout the book and I think it was well portrayed how we can be in our way more often than not, especially in difficult situations to navigate. I would have LOVED more with Maude and Aeric and hoping we can see more of it and maybe even Aeric POV in future books because I think there’s so much more to explore here, especially with the fact that we know what we know about a certain general and how that’s gonna impact the relationship!
I just have so many thoughts and feelings about the things we learned throughout DOSAC and especially the events and revelations of Part 2 but I don’t wanna say too much! I can’t recommend this series enough and am ready for book 3 please❤️🔥
Daughter of Shadows and Chaos comes out June 10th!
Multiple POV, Morally Grey MMC and FMC, Found Family, Hidden Identities, Norse Mythology, Touch Him/Her and Diego, Tension, SPICE
This sequel to Kingdom of Embers and Ruin picks up where Maude and Herrick left off: Maude in the clutches of death and Herrick facing certain death. Both in separate kingdoms unfamiliar to them. What are the Gods’ plans for Maude, Herrick, and their friends? When all is hopeless, will they finally accept their fate or keep fighting the Gods plans to forge their own destiny?
WOW. This book had absolutely everything in it. N.E. Valla strikes again in this phenomenal sequel. This book delve deeper into character development as the plot unraveled. There is heartbreak, trauma, grief, and all that comes with both love and war. There is fighting to the death and fighting for love at every turn. The tension and spice is so well done. I love every single character in this book, both old and new. I cried, rioted, sighed, gasped, smiled, laughed, and raged with each of them. Their stories were fleshed out in the best way possible to get any reader to cherish every main and side character. This has easily become one of my favorite fantasy series of all time. The writing is beautiful and impactful. It pulls at your heartstrings and lights a fire in you as you journey with Maude and Herrick during the time of the Vikings. Her writing pulls you in and makes you never want to leave. Valla has created a forever fan in me. This is easily one of my favorite series of all time, and I cannot wait for the next book. Seriously. I’m not sure I can. I highly recommend you read this series if you enjoy fantasy, magic, high stakes, deep characters, Norse mythology, and powerful FMCs. It is a must read.
This is my HONEST opinion, and ALL opinions in this review are my own. Thank you SO much, NE Valla, for the chance to experience this world. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to read this story prior to publication. I look forward to reading these stories ahead next book in the series and all of your future works!
Ahh, sweet promises. Call me crazy, but there’s something sneaky sweet about a declaration of revenge. If you agree with me, then you’ll be happy to know this installment in the Heirs of Fate series is full of rage and revenge plots - and not just from our main couple. Multiple new pov’s give lots of insight into all our characters and a couple new relationships to root for as well.
The events of Kingdom of Embers and Ruin leave our crew battered and broken, and this book is centered more around the time of healing in the aftermath. While there’s still lots of reveals and action, this really dives deep into the intricacies of relationships after trauma and doesn’t shy away from the uglier side of that recovery. The difficulties of loving after loss, of simply living after loss, and of letting go of pain are heavier themes that are handled really well and give all these characters some amazing growth.
Despite all the growth and empowerment these characters face, the ending left me feeling like things are going to get worse before they get better. The villains seem to be just getting started and the gods are meddling, but I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Daughter of Shadows and Chaos is book 2 in the Heirs of Fate series and you can expect: •𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 •𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗺𝗰 •𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗳 / 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗺𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗽 •𝗠𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘃 •𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 •𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀
The first book of N.E. Valla's Heirs of Fate series, Kingdom of Embers and Ruin, left me an emotional wreck. I still remember the feeling of sitting in my chair and collecting pieces of my broken heart from the floor, not knowing how to exist. Well, I thought that was the height of my emotional wreckage, but I was so wrong. Wrong because the way Daughter of Shadows and Chaos affected me was far challenging—it wrecked me, and I welcomed the pain. Welcomed it, felt it, and stored it for safekeeping.
The aftermath of everything that happened in Book 1 is explored in detail in the sequel. But the sequel is much more than that—it dives deep into the most vulnerable and darkest parts of one's heart and soul. It explores coping mechanisms and survival methods without choosing favourites—everyone is granted their own path forward. Is there really the "right" way to heal from traumatic experiences? I'd say there isn't, and DOSAC shows that in the most respectful yet raw way.
Maude is struggling with expressing herself and truly opening herself to anyone; Herick is struggling to move forward from his own horrific experience; Bryn is struggling to make peace with the past and her role in it all; Lyv is struggling to find her way forward; Hakon is dealing with the loss in his own way. Our perfectly imperfect found family is bent, but it isn't broken yet.
Nadya has written a masterpiece, simple as that. A devastatingly beautiful and intricate Viking-inspired story filled with mysteries and secrets, kingdoms amidst war and chaos, meddling gods, fate & prophecies guiding (or trying to) the characters. And with them, we cheer, we rage, we cry. We feel deeply for them and see all their intricacies and perfect imperfections. We cry for their losses; we rage at the betrayals; we are stunned by all the plot twists and turns. And finally, we are left with the sense of utter awe of being able to experience all that while reading DOSAC and utter anguish for having to wait for Book 3 to learn what happens next.
Thank you, Nadya, for having me on your ARC team; it is an honour, and one I don't take lightly.
Valla knows how to write an immersive story! I love the connections she brings forth to her characters. And I’m so mad about Maude right now! And scared! Especially after reading that acknowledgments page!!! 😱😱😱! I’m scared for what will be next for my characters I love so much!
Maude has been on a rough freaking journey and I’m hoping for a HEA?! Crossing my fingers it doesn’t get to much darker in book 3 for her.
If you’re looking for a dark Norse mythology romantasy, check this series out!
CW: violence, gore, death, loss of family, animal death (sacrifice), spice, torture, some others
Thank you to the author for the ARC! “Daughter of Shadows and Chaos” is available now!
To say everything’s in turmoil would be an understatement: Maude died and then got better, Herrick’s been captured, Hakon’s emotionally broken, Gunnar’s physically broken, and Liv’s been lying to the entire crew for years. Oh, and there’s the whole thing with the Kingdom of Flame being run by an insane tyrant bent on ruling both kingdoms. And that’s just to get things started.
You could’ve left the pitch at “fire wielding warrior lady goes on a rampage and breaks things” and I would’ve loved it, but then we doubled down with “here’s a love interest, a whole kingdom to cause chaos in, and godly plots” and here we are, two books in, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
Where oh where do I start with the absolute (angst-riddled) delight that was this book? We’re starting with the magic, because it makes me happy. The integration of the magic system and its limitations here is flawless, and it’s worked so well into the story that it somehow manages to be both background and center stage when it appears. The different types, the implementations of the magic, the cost associated with our characters’ use of their magic; it’s all done so seamlessly and so beautifully that the author’s made writing something this complex look easy.
Really, ‘the author made it look easy’ could be applied to this entire book. The character development? The plot evolution? The inclusion of, not one, but two characters that inspire absolute rage in me as a reader just by their existence? Solid execution.
And holy character development, Batman. Every single one of our MCs is having a terrible time, and they’re all handling it in different ways. Rage, substance use, withdrawal— a whole slew of negative coping mechanisms and they’re all represented uniquely and in a way that fits with the character. And they’re all trying to get better and move on (mostly).
I have exactly one (1) issue with this book, and it’s entirely based on personal preference, not the actual writing. Our MMC and FMC have gone *through* some stuff, and obviously this has given them Trauma ™. As such, their communication is hardcore struggling. It’s not miscommunication, it’s just a lack of communication, and for me, that’s a hard thing to read about. It’s well written, it makes sense in context, it just also drives me nuts.
Back to things done insanely well— that plot? Unreasonable. Stressful. Amazing. If it’s not one thing it’s another for these characters, and literally everything is going to pieces around them. It’s a plotline that both keeps you guessing and delivers exactly what you’re afraid it will, and it stays like that for the entire book. The pacing is well done, and it was really easy to stay engaged with the story the whole way through. It’s a hefty book, too, so there’s plenty to really sink your teeth into along the way.
All in all, this was another stellar installment in the series, and I’m already chomping at the bit to get into the next one. This is a big, immersive fantasy world that gives the reader plenty to work with in terms of both characters and plot. If you’re looking for a story to give badass Viking-ish vibes with its own twist on the mythology, or if you just want a really good story about some really damaged people with a lot of vendettas against corrupt entities, then you absolutely need to give these books a try.
A gripping, gut-wrenching sequel that leaves you breathless.
In the sequel to Kingdom of Embers and Ruin, Maude and her allies are on the run after failed assassination attempts against King Harald Helvig, who now wields the power to dominate all of Ahland. In a desperate bid to free the man she loves, Maude uses her newfound powers to break Herrick from imprisonment. Meanwhile, Herrick struggles with his failures and the darkness that haunts him, only to find new strength in Maude's fiery presence. As their fates intertwine, they uncover hidden truths about the forces guiding them, but with hope all but lost, their connection may either save them or tear their lives apart forever.
This is a masterclass in emotional depth, world-shattering revelations, and dark, brutal magic. This second installment rips the veil off long-hidden truths—family secrets, political manipulation, divine interference—and lays them bare in a way that will leave readers reeling. Each chapter peels back another layer, expertly building tension until a jaw-dropping twist at the end leaves you scrambling for the next book.
Where Book 1 laid the foundation, this installment dives headfirst into the heart of trauma, grief, and inner darkness. Every character is cracked wide open, revealing raw vulnerability and the scars they carry. The emotional weight is palpable—guilt, regret, fear, and buried truths swirl together, creating a deeply reflective tone that enhances the stakes of the world around them. These characters aren’t just heroes—they’re deeply flawed, haunted, and desperately trying to outrun their pasts. It’s powerful, heartbreaking, and beautifully done.
The tension—emotional and sexual—is off the charts. Characters grasp at each other for comfort and connection in a world determined to keep them apart. Maude and Herrick, in particular, are a deliciously tormented pair. Their reincarnation-driven trauma and tortured pasts fuel an intense, volatile chemistry that swings from hatred to burning desire in a heartbeat. While the story teases us with moments of spice, it’s clear the fire is only just beginning to re-ignite.
And when the action hits? It hits hard. Brutal, visceral, and unforgiving, the battle scenes are vividly rendered and soaked in blood. The magic is savage, the gods are merciless, and the consequences are real. No one is safe, and every fight carries emotional weight and stakes that reshape the world and the characters forever.
This is a sequel that does everything right—deeper character arcs, higher stakes, and more brutal truths. It’s emotionally devastating, unrelentingly intense, and completely unputdownable. Fans of dark fantasy, Norse-inspired mythos, and slow-burn, high-stakes romance: you need this series in your life.
“Daughter of Shadows and Chaos” is book 2 in the Heirs of Fate Series and is an absolutely riveting sequel to Kingdom of Embers and Ruin. This installment is packed with action, twists, betrayal, and secrets—plus a healthy dose of spice that makes the journey even more exhilarating. Just as gripping as the first book, this story had me hooked from start to finish. I simply couldn’t put it down.
The characters? Absolutely phenomenal. Each one is crafted with depth, relatability, and emotional weight that tugs at your heart. Their individual struggles feel raw and real, making you root for them in every moment. Even the side characters are beautifully woven into the narrative, enriching the story with their own compelling journeys.
And then there’s Herrick. Every girl’s dream MMC—smitten, fiercely loyal, and willing to burn the world down for the one he loves. But he’s no softhearted pushover. He’s got a delicious mean streak and a mouth to match. After suffering heartbreak, betrayal, and unimaginable pain, he remains Maude’s anchor when she needs him most. His personal journey is equally powerful as he wrestles with his identity, untangles secrets, and ultimately embraces who he’s meant to be.
Maude, on the other hand, has endured a lifetime of hardship. Raised by a father who turned her into a weapon for his own agenda, she struggles to trust anyone but herself. Her love for Herrick is undeniable, but admitting it? That’s a different battle entirely—one that fuels plenty of misunderstandings and trust issues. Then, when a long-buried secret upends everything she thought she knew about herself and her fate, her world is thrown into chaos.
Their relationship is explosive—charged with tension, fiery banter, and relentless stubbornness. Maude will unalive anyone who threatens Herrick, and I love seeing their devotion and intensity play out as they fight to overcome obstacle after obstacle. The spice? So worth the wait. And the journey leading up to it? Had me gasping.
Unlike the first book, this one doesn’t end with a massive cliffhanger—but trust me, I’m still dying for Book 3. I need more. I need to see what happens next.
Okay, I’ve got to preface this review by saying that Daughter of Shadows and Chaos was an emotional warzone, and I am pretty sure I have only survived through the power of human stubbornness.
Meet Maude and Herrick, because oh lord Maude is strong and fierce and driven, and Herrick has all the broody-dark-mysterious-general-charm and the pieces of a broken heart (spoonifully). These two have a history—like they’ve both tried to murder a king and failed kind of history. Now he’s got a chain on his ankle and is a prisoner of the people he was trying to save, and she’s doing her best to get him out and the continent of Ahland is on fire. It is all prophecies and a meddling pantheon of gods, and enemies on all sides, and your OTP trying to not be roadkill in the tides of fate so they can be together.
What really stood out to me about Daughter of Shadows and Chaos: The emotional weight of it all. PTSD and the pieces of a shattered moral compass and the last lengths to which people will go. N.E. Valla does not shy away from some heavy hitting on trauma and forgiveness, and redemption. The stakes are epic and the emotional stakes are higher. You’ll root for them, you’ll cry with them, and when they finally take each other’s hands? I had to admit defeat and binge all the happy dances my chaotic heart could muster.
The world building of Ahland is such Viking mythology heaven (blood and thunder and gods playing games with the lives of mere mortals, oh my). Dark and opulent and regal. A plus: the series is gritty all over but the romance is flames. It’s a slow burn with deep dark depths (hello, ocean references) and, as with most satisfying alpha male heroines, Herrick makes the first move–Swoon worthy.
Alright, fair warning: it’s not a light and frothy read. There is violence and children in danger and torture and death and depression. It is angst central, and it rightfully has all of those content warnings. If you’re in the market for emotional rollercoaster fantasy, morally gray characters with oceans of feels and a romance that’s molded in an apocalypse, it certainly delivers.
Since the beginning, this series has been a perfect blend of romance and fantasy, delivering an engaging storyline and magic system rooted in Viking lore and Norse mythology. We still get battles and bloodshed, beautiful descriptions of architecture and nature and intensely detailed world building. But we also get a story that focuses on not one, but several engaging romances between multiple characters-with enough chemistry and banter to make any romance reader swoon.
As with any good series, there’s also a fair share of heartbreak and chaos that accompanies the good times. Our favorite warriors are just beginning to realize what the gods and fate have in store for them, and it seems following their fate isn’t all as glorious and easy as we would hope. You WILL feel as if you are breaking alongside these characters as they learn, grow and absolutely shatter under the weight of what is revealed.
Herrick and Maude are still absolutely explosive together in all the best ways-even if their secrets and stubborn pride stand to get in their way.
As for Bryn and Liv? My goodness-I love them with all my heart. The stolen glances, the small touches, the awkwardness of a new romance blossoming in the wake of loss….their relationship is beautiful and perfect and I am yearning for this romance to have a happy ending. They both deserve it.
Without giving too much away, I will say I absolutely enjoyed the shocking reveals we get in this book, as well as all the new characters and secrets we uncover along the way. There’s one character in particular that is especially interesting (and tragic) and I just know I’m going to go through a lot of heartbreak when it comes time to reveal more of his story. But I absolutely cannot wait to see where all of this leads!
Thank you to N.E. Valla for letting me read the book before release. I am so happy to continue to be a part of this journey.
BRAVO!!! She’s done it again! I was patiently waiting to be an ARC reader for this sequel because the first book was THAT good and I needed to know what happened! And N.E Valla delivered!
We picked up right where we left off and kept the pace up from there! I’m going to try and give this a review without spoiling things.
First I love how Maude and Herrick have grown from the first to second book. They’ve both been through their own trials and tribulations that have steered them towards their current path. I also love how their roles shifted and sort of switched as well. While Herrick was all for following his fate in book one, he begins to question it and rebel a bit against what was predestined for him. Meanwhile Maude is starting to lean into her fate a bit more and is learning to not only trust in that fate, but in those that surround her too.
We have much more Bryn in book two and I am here for it! Bryn’s character is one that I would love to have an entire book about as well. She has more to her than meets the eye and I love that this book reveals more of her character to the reader.
The multiple POVs is wonderful and provides more insight and thought from each character. It works really well and I thought it flowed nicely.
We are introduced to a few new characters that I have grown to really like and am curious to learn more about. Especially when it comes to new relationships that were also explored in this book. The relationship between Maude and Herrick is so good! The tension is unreal and made me want to throw my book and shout at them haha.
The tension between other characters also had me on the edge of my seat! N.E. Valla, leaves us on another cliffhanger (not as extreme as book 1) and begging for more! I HAVE to get the third book in my hands ASAP!
Action packed, romance, healing of traumas, new relationships, new characters, magic, this book has everything! The author did an amazing job with the second book. It started a little bit slow because we are learning more about the new characters, Maude's past and about her mother. Every explanation was worth it because Sylvi (Maude's mom) did a little bit of everything.
Maude is an amazing character but this book she stressed me so much, she is stubborn but on this book it was took to another level. She was angry at people for not communicating things to her but she never wanted to communicate with people? Specially with Aeric and Herrick. At least through the book we can see how her character growth out of that phase but of course she will continue to be stubborn.
The growth and understanding of the Maude, Herrick, Hakon and Bryn was amazing to read. Maude was dealing with learning who she is, listening to other people and be able to communicate her feelings and she did it. Herrick was trying to overcome the trauma of being tortured and even though he struggled, he did an amazing job coming back. Hakon and Bryn were dealing with the loss of someone important in their lives and they were learning in how to live without them. The author made a great job of showing and portraying different traumas and how people deal with them differently.
There were so many plot twists in this book but the more important for me is that I need to know who really is Baldr. I have a thought of who he is and who are their parents but I need to confirmation as soon as possible!! As well I need Maude and Herrick together again, I still wishing a happy ending for them. I can’t wait to read the next book and I know it would be amazing too.
I don’t even know where to begin, all I know is that the next book is probably gonna make me bawl my eyes out if anything happens to these characters we’ve joined on this journey.
We start where we left off in the last one. This book is filled with adventure, world building, and so much more backstory that connects so many things together. We see a lot of development in the characters, questioning everything they’ve ever known, changing after the trauma they’ve gone through.
Herrick and Maude are at a crossroads with each other, both questioning everything and whether they can trust each other and not, it’s a constant tug of war of feelings between the two. So much angst, fear, and desperation. At the end of the day though, both of them will do whatever it takes to free the people of Ahland.
Hakon, Liv, Bryn, and Gunnar all make appearances and we see a lot of development and insight to their characters throughout the book. We also are introduced to a couple new important characters, Dahlia, Aeric, and Baldr to name a few of the main ones. And while you’ll love some of them, you’ll resent others, but in the end you’ll learn the importance to their characters.
“We have one chance to become better versions of ourselves if we succeed, our legacies can be one of kindness and compassion.”
They’ve all been fighting for so long to try and make the world better, to save the innocent people from the torture and death of the tyrants who are greedy for power.
“It takes one generation to break the cycle.”
And so they will, even if it’s the last thing they do.
Thank you to the author for an ARC in return for an honest review.
After the plot twist and emotional whiplash at the end of book one, I just knew this sequel would drag my soul through the absolute maximum. And oh… it did.
My heart danced, bled, sobbed, screamed and the moment they held each other again? I was feral.
The only words I had when I finished were: HOLY. SHIT. I reread book one before diving into the ARC, and the way I missed all those little hidden clues?? My mind. Blown. The action. The magic. The found family. The grief. The growth. It all held me so tightly I might have emotionally exploded at the end.
I love that it’s multiple POVs, you feel everything with them. I was genuinely crying with Herrick. The writing is so intense you don’t just read it, you live it. The tension between Herrick and Maude?? Still boozing in book two.
The way each character handles grief differently made my chest ache. And don’t get me started on a certain king, I nearly combusted every single time he entered the page. Pretty sure my whole house knew who I was rooting for.
What I really appreciate? This book doesn’t gloss over trauma. It shows the painful process of healing. You feel their suffering. You live their scars. I guessed one plot twist but STILL screamed I KNEW IT when it hit. The angry confession scene?? >>>
I wish I could say more about the characters, but my emotions still run too high, and honestly, I don’t want to spoil a single moment. Even though i could write pages of reviews just for the characters. If you want to know more GO READ IT!!!!
phewww what to sayy ? what a roller coaster. firstly thank you so much to the author for the amazing opportunity to arc read this book. i have had read book one in January of this year and I absolutely adored it, it became a favorite of mine. so to have the chance to arc read book 2 only 4 months after is mindblowingly amazing to me. the book picks up after the ending of book 1 and sets the tone really nicely for book 3, the buildup was great and we got more worldbuilding and lore that just adds more anticipation to how the final confrontation will happen. this book focused more on character development and less on plot and action compared to book one, however it is absolutely understandable due to what all the characters went through in book one, it was really good to see that response to trauma and how each of them dealt with it in their own way. it might feels backwards and i admit it was frustrating at times but it is a good reminder of how the characters are still human and not perfect and how they can still learn and grow and how they're stronger than they have ever thought themselves to be. there was a lot of small events and details were hinted at but never fully explored in this book so i cant wait to see and read more about that in book 3. I was also really proud of maude's development during this book and i cannot waittt to see more of her. overall, this was a great sequel to an amazing debut and i definitely recommend continuing this series.
She does it again. I received this as an ARC and I am fully enmeshed and captivated by the emotionality of her writing. I am not one who enjoys emotionally heavy romantasy but the plot, world building, characters and descriptions are so captivating and keep me coming back for more.
I loved watching Herrick embrace his full darkness and understand he can be the general and let himself fully go! Seeing Maude break down his walls and set him free allowing him to take control of his trauma was so healing.
I could go on about Liv, Bryan, Gunnar and Dahlia but I will just say the side characters all give main character energy and we are here for it!
Maude finding her true father is so beautiful and as an adoptee it spoke to my soul. She deserves to be loved completely and wholly without any conditions and that’s what she’s found!

Magic, Norse Mythology, grumpy FMC and MMC who falls first.... what's not to love!! I read the Kingdom of Embers and Ruin last year and have had the story of Maude and Herrick in the back of mind ever since. The book leaves us on a cliffhanger and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this sequel! And man.... did N.E. Valla deliver and make me wish the third book was coming out tomorrow.
Despite the anger and trust issues Maude and Herrick manage to grow stronger, with a healthy amount of banter and tension. The author does a fantastic job of incorporating POVs from more characters outside of Maude and Herrick which adds a significant amount of depth and understanding to the world and story she has built.
I have so many theories and hopes for the 3rd book and cannot wait for it to hit the shelves as well. I have recommended this series to everyone I know looking for a good fantasy novel with healthy amounts of tension and spice. I have nothing but praise for this book for toying with my emotions the way it did. I laughed, cried, mourned and yelled right along our beloved characters.... and if that isn't the best reading experience I don't know what is.
Please do yourselves a favor and pick up these books and read them while we all wait with baited breath for word about the 3rd novel.
Whewwwwwww this book. Where do I start? I think I'm going to start at the end and work my way backwards.
So, let's start with the fact that this IS a book that will leave you wrung out. Be ready for it, accept it, embrace it.
There is a lot that leads to that wrung out point, and it's all worth it.
Something you should know about this book is that just like a real person's growth, our favorite characters' arcs are not linear. While our faves made some strides in book 1, the impacts of what happened at the end of Book 1 changes our characters and there is some healing and growth that needs to happen. Feeling like our characters are going backwards is hard, but I really appreciated the acknowledgement of moving forward after trauma.
I'm absolutely obsessed with Maude. Even more now than I was in book 1. She has so much to give, I just wish she could see in herself what everyone else does. Herrick has some SHIFTS in this book. You'll just need to read find out.
The book felt very much like a set up for book 3. There was significantly more world building in this book on top of what we learned in book 1. More history, more lore, just more.
I'm beyond excited for what we can look forward to in Book 3.
What a book! Note* 4.5 stars rounded to 5! So much happened and we're still left wanting with that cliffhanger of an ending! This book picks up where book 1 left off. Full of action from the start. Maude and Herrick go through so many traumatic events and there's only so much time for them to heal and process new hurts. A ton of tough conversations and healing occur throughout this entire story. I loved the growth and discoveries each character has as they work through their traumas. The new relationships and bonds forming made me happy and hopeful. I enjoyed the romance elements (& spice!) and the back and forth tension with Maude and Herrick even though it was a bit much at times. The gods and seers part of this book was well done and really cool to read. Discovering how big of a role the gods play in everyones fates is disturbing and insightful to how the characters make decisions. The Viking lifestyle was definitely felt throughout this novel. One of my favorite aspects. I couldn't quite rate this five stars with how stubborn and unforgiving Maude still is. Everyone heals differently, but she's still struggling so much. I hope she gets to heal and grow in the next book.
What a book. What an amazing sequel. An IMMENSE amount of character growth happens in DOSAC, and it's so realistic. The characters aren't suddenly healed from all of their trauma after a single conversation. There's so much grief within all of them, and the author is not afraid to explore that deeply and bring it to the surface. There are also a few new budding romances, and I hope we get to see more of this in book 3!
While this book is definitely more character-focused, we still get served plenty of juicy plot that had me reading between the lines looking for extra meaning. The slow burn and the spice were immaculate. The ending is a brutal cliffhanger, but it feels so necessary to the plot to leave the story at that point.
There are also a TON of little plot points left unanswered that I know we'll get to see in book 3 and any future installments.
I have no complaints. Not a single one. I could not have asked for a better sequel to Kingdom of Embers and Ruin.
As always, a massive thank you to the author for allowing me to be an ARC reader. This review is my honest opinion. ❤️🔥
Oh wow! Another 10/10 read. There is something about N.E. Valla’s writing that has me in her clutches. Once I finally got the chance to sit down I finished the rest of the book in one sitting did I mention it’s over 600+ pages 😅 but wow the things she is able to write is amazing it’s never too slow or too fast for that many pages it is straight perfection. We were introduced to a few new characters this book with aeric, baldr, and dahlia but I’m here for it they were all amazing also glad to know none of them were love interests for Maude because my heart wouldn’t be able to handle that as Maude and Herrick had alot of issues to work through my heart was breaking at the beginning and middle of the book as it seemed like there was no hope and just when they find and fully accept each other again all hel breaks loose.. literally. The battles rage on and man are they good though. The sacrifice at the end of the book breaks my heart but it was needed for our men to be stronger on the other side. And the forming of new relationships ugh I love them! This book is amazing and I need more soon. Thank you for once again providing just an amazing read that I truly could not put down. 🥰🥰
Oh, this book? Had me at the edge of my seat. If I was freaking out about the ending of book 1 this one started exactly where that one left off and I was here for this. I absolutely love Maude and Herrick and all the side characters who all form a beautiful found family who work great together. Maude is a top-tier FMC who doesn't take anything from anyone and it's ready to take you down to defend those she loves but in this one, the battle she is trying to conquer is bigger than anything she can handle. Herrick oh this man is a book boyfriend for sure, one of my fave MMC, and more when he calls her: "Minn Eldr" melting here for him. But yes 100% recommend reading this book, but first make sure to read KOEAR.
Okay, now that's out of the way. This was yet again an incredible read. The plot itself just keeps getting more and more intricate, and I am here for it! Herrick? That poor man has been through IT. Not just at the start but everything else that's going on? Dude, sit down, have a hug, a drink, and a massive slice of cake. and Maude???? Oh my! Poor girl, all those secrets, all those feelings. Her family is rough. Thank the goddess for Brynna. Honestly, I loved this. I kept swiping, trying to read more, but I guess I'm waiting.... again :(. Deffo a 10/10 read.
N. E. Valla has done it again. Daughter of Shadows and Chaos picks up right after book 1. It's off and running almost immediately. We do get some new characters introduced in this book who play key roles. I love the different POVs, fully fleshing out the characters. There was more world building and magics, as well. Maude and Herrick are as complicated as ever. (I really hope we get a HEA for this two soon.) The pacing is perfect. The twists and turns are not telegraphed. All in all a great second entry to the series. If you're looking for a Nordic mythology romantasy, this is the series for you.
I thought book 1 broke me, but man was I wrong. I didn’t understand being broke until book 2.
There is NO sophomore slump happening here. I was on pins and needles for all our characters, and even some new ones.
The continued world and magic building was phenomenal and came so natural. None of the new elements introduced seemed out of place or thrown in. Everything had a purpose and you might not see it as you’re reading, but it comes together to tell a truly beautiful story.
Even though I am broken, I would gladly break again and again.
I was fortunate enough to read book 2 as an ARC. So I read 1 & 2 back to back. Let me say.... I ENJOYED IT!. My goal is to aim to keep this spoiler free. For those who like to jump into the unknown! It's hard to find a series that will keep you engaged enough to want to continue past book 1. THIS SERIES DOES THAT!! Very heavy on the "I Got Issues" personality type. (We love that). Very very heavy on the "I will not give up on you". (We love that also). If you're looking for a way to escape and watch a hero rise again from the shadows, then this is it.
Oh man! Why do authors like to leave their readers on a cliffhanger?!?!? Just finished this book, and I'm dying to find out what happens next! The second book in the series was just as captivating and intriguing as the first book. I hope we don't have tonwait for another year before the next book comes out! This series reminds me of A Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas, if you loved her series you will love this one!
I LOVED Kingdom of Embers and Ruin and was so excited to get this one!
After the massive cliffhanger in Kingdom of Embers and Ruin, I was dying to know what happened next! Daughter of Shadows and Chaos picks up right where book one leaves off, and jumps right into the action and details even more of this amazing story.
Even though I read book one back in September, when I started this one, I immediately remembered everything that had happened and all of the emotions I went through in book one. The plot and character development go even deeper in this story, and we learn so much more about the world and all the beloved characters.
I loved diving back into the Norse mythology and magic here and am intrigued by what's going to happen next in this story! While this one doesn't have as dramatic an ending as book one, it left me immediately wanting the next one!
If you love Norse mythology like in God of War (this series always makes me think of this video game franchise) and elemental magic with a lot of emotional depth and trauma, check this one out!
