Denver Bashers Series #4

Of Pucking Course

Rate this book
I’ve had a crush on Dakota Richards since I met her five years ago.

One problem: she’s my teammate’s little sister, which means she’s off-limits.

When she breaks up with her ex and needs a place to stay, I offer her the guest room in my house. It’s a favor between friends, nothing more.

But one night I overhear her using a toy in her bedroom and crying out my name…

She confesses that she has a crush on me too…and after years of being disappointed by her ex, she wants me to be her coach in the bedroom.

It’s an easy yes for me. I’m happy to make all her filthy fantasies come true.

It’s not long before my feelings for Dakota deepen…I’m falling in love with her…

If her brother ever finds out about us, he’ll end me.

But it just might be worth it because I don’t want anyone but her.

Sam and Dakota's book!

Tropes:

Brother's best friend
Roommates to lovers
He's her "coach" in the bedroom
Secret romance
Dirty talk
He falls first and harder

I devoured this one. Of Pucking Course gave me everything I love in a hockey romance — roommates to lovers, brother’s best friend, and a hero who’s been secretly in love for years. Sam and Dakota? My new favorite comfort couple.

After Dakota moves in post-breakup, the tension is there immediately. What starts off as friendly help turns into a flirty, steamy situation that had me smiling the entire time. The “coaching” angle was such a fun touch, and the spice? Let’s just say I had to take a few deep breaths.

What I really loved was how lighthearted and easy it felt while still giving me a romance I could root for. Sam is sweet, protective, and so patient with her, and Dakota is warm, a little unsure of herself at times, but so lovable. Their connection just worked for me from the start.

No unnecessary drama, no frustrating breakup — just a feel-good, flirty, and seriously swoony read. I’m obsessed.

Absolutely adore Sam and Dakota. I could see them locking eyes at each other throughout the series and love that they got their HEA! Sam was so sweet and patient with Dakota and I wish I could’ve knocked some sense into Jake!

Tropes:
Friends to benefits to lovers
They were roommates
Brother’s best friend
No third act breakup

Thank you so much to Sarah Smith for an eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Bonus! Cannot wait for Coach Porter’s story, foaming at the mouth for it. Also loved Camden and hope he gets his own HEA one day.

ARC read

I am very thankful for the opportunity to read this one as an ARC.

Unfortunately, this one wasn't for me. I wanted to love it because I love hockey romance, but I just didn't. IMO Dakota wasn't likeable, Sam didn't really have much personality, and they didn't have any chemistry. This is the only book I've read in this series, and you can 100% be read as a standalone for those interested in doing so.

This was my first book read by author Sarah Smith and it did not disappoint! Though this was book 4 in the Denver Bashers Book series, I was able to read as a standalone with no issues. This was a sweet but perfectly spicy contemporary hockey romance read that I’d certainly recommend to all romance book lovers!!

ARC review for Of Pucking Course by Sarah Smith

Thanks to Sarah for the ARC opportunity!

What to expect: sports romance, mutual pining, brother's best friend, spicy lessons, friends and roommates to lovers, forced proximity, secret relationship, he falls first, found family,

Trigger warning: emotionally manipulative ex, technically cheating (FMC is married and breaks up with husband at beginning of book but hasn't formally split from husband yet), verbal altercation at work (FMC)

Review: 3/5

After three books of pining, Sam and Dakota are finally coming together!

Things I liked:
- We love a man who takes care of his partner and Sam is a great caretaker. I also loved his interactions with his niece and nephew.
- I've said it in every review of each book of this series and I'll say it again. Coach Porter is the best.
- It was fun once again to return to the Basher's world. I love the found family vibe and the way these teammates and their partners are, more than anything, friends who love and support one another in all things. When I want happy and feel good, the Basher's world is a good place to be.

Things I disliked or missed the mark:
- I feel like I needed more from Dakota. Like, I know what sort of childhood she and Del had. But I don't quite feel like I understood why she was the way she was. You quickly learn she's always been treated like crap by her previous partners. I don't understand why she would stick with them, especially after seeing the relationship her parents had and knowing she had Del to protect her and help her grow up. I did like her ability to reason with grumpy Del. Not many people can get through to him and I love that his little sister can put him in his place.
- There was a lot of repetition. The book could have been quite a bit shorter if some of the dual POV repetition was cut. Same with the descriptions. Like, how many times do we need to be told Sam is sweet? Four times just in chapter two apparently. And more as the book goes on. There were just several instances of similar text within a single chapter. Multiple feral sounds, Sam is so sweet, I can't be with Dakota because of Del, etc., etc. It made the book monotonous and I ended up skimming the descriptions and monologues and just focused on the dialogue.
- The whole thing with “Will, the equipment manager” (yes, that’s how he’s referenced through almost the entirety of the book), seemed unnecessary and felt like it was there just for the drama. It’s so blatantly dropped throughout the story and then fixed within two chapters. It just felt like drama inserted for the sake of drama but I didn’t really feel like it added anything to the story.
- There were several spots where we're told something happened instead of shown it and where the showing could have really elevated the story.

If you like a sports romance or any of the tropes featured and just want to have a good, low-angst time, give this, and the rest of the Basher's world, a shot. Don't expect something that's going to get you into your moody feels.

Our fearless leader, Coach Porter, is up next and I cannot WAIT to know all the delightfully naughty things he gets up to behind closed door.

If you love your hockey heroes— golden retriever sweet off the ice and secretly dominant on it (and in the bedroom 😏)— Of Pucking Course is your next must-read.

Sam “Gentleman Defenseman” McKesson has had it bad for his best friend’s little sister, Dakota, for years, but being the respectful king he is, he’s kept those feelings locked up tighter than a playoff game. That is, until Dakota moves in with him post-toxic ex, and things start heating up in their cozy little roommate setup. Spoiler alert: secrets don’t stay secret for long when the chemistry is feral.

This story brings the good stuff—forbidden but mutual pining, friends-to-lovers tension with swoony support, and spice that seriously scores (Sam’s dirty talk deserves its own highlight reel🥵🥵). Add in emotional growth and a whole lot of found family vibes, and you’ve got a romance that shoots straight to the heart.

No third-act breakup. No unnecessary drama. Just two people falling in love in a way that’s sexy, supportive, and so incredibly satisfying. And while Sam and Dakota lit up the pages, I’m already skating ahead in excitement for Coach Porter’s story (Coach Daddy, let’s go!).

Sarah Smith, you’ve done it again!

Swoony line:

“I’d love to be the guy who gives you all the grand gestures you want.”

This book was freaking everything, I’ve always preferred enemies to lovers to friends to lovers, but this book has changed my mind. This book was such a fun, cute and smutty read, perfect for a day where you just need to relax and laugh. This plot was perfect, it’s not like the dark romance I normally read with intense plot twists, but it was so intriguing and I was hooked in a different way. The chemistry of the characters, the brothers best friend off limits kind of forbidden love, and a girl healing after having a toxic relationship. I fell deeply in love with this book. Sam is such a sweetheart, after she moves in he tries so hard to keep boundaries, being the perfect caring friend but not crossing into boyfriend territory. But he can’t hold back when Dakota suggests a situationship, and it quickly turns into much more. Dakota’s previous relationship was toxic, so when they’re together, Sam basically worships the ground she walks on and it’s the sweetest thing ever. But while he’s a gentleman in the streets, he sure is a freak in the sheets. The encouragement in this book is the best thing, and I guess it’s an odd thing to say without explaining it so I’ll try my best. Both MCs are characters that look down on themselves whether it be because of what others tell them or the high expectations they set for themselves. Sometimes when people say so many hurtful things to you, it ingrains into your brain and becomes a regular thought that you believe and tell yourself, and I am very familiar with that feeling. So seeing how both of them encourage each other and push each other out of their comfort zone or push them to do something other people criticize them about, is just the sweetest and most endearing thing. It’s obviously more prominent in Sam as he constantly encourages Dakota after being put down by her ex a lot but Dakota’s faith and belief in Sam also helps him tremendously. And I love how the last chapter and epilogue highlights the growth that each of them had, and how the others encouragement and faith in them helped them get there. I teared up haha. Needless to say I loved this book and I give it a 5/5

Brothers best friend and hockey romance will never fail me! This one was just as good.

Dakota comes to realization at her wedding reception that the man she married is all wrong for her. He is mentally abusive and just wrong for her. She finds herself being roommates with her brothers best friend, Sam, who is an insanely hot hockey player who she is also friends with and had a crush on, but never thought she was good enough for. Dakota is a kindergarten teacher and is so sweet, kind, but also has some sass to her.

Sam the “gentleman defenseman” is just that. He is always so sweet and caring to everyone around him. Always looking out for and protecting those around him. He has had a crush on Dakota for 5 years, but can’t act on it because she’s his best friend’s little sister and now that they are roommates the temptation is really hard. Especially after he heard her tell her best friends that she thinks she is broken because no man has ever man her orgasm.

Dakota convinces Sam to be her “coach” in bed and let’s be honest, it doesn’t take that much to convince him because this is what he has been dreaming of for years! He is determined to show her what her body can do. He is going to help her get the control back and show her that she is not broken and it’s the jerks she was picking. He may be sweet and caring, but that man in the bedroom is controlling and bossy too! 🥵🔥

This book will have you raging at the Dakota’s exes, laughing at the banter, swooning at Sam, and the spice is hot!

ARC Review

Dakota Richards has never had it easy when it comes to relationships, and her current one is no exception. But when everything comes crashing down, her brother’s best friend is there to help pick up the pieces. The question is, can she keep her distance?

Sam McKesson, also known as the Gentleman Defenseman, is as steady and loyal as they come. He’s built a reputation on and off the ice for being dependable, but what would his best friend, and their entire team think if they knew the truth? That Sam is falling hard for the one woman who’s always been off-limits: his best friend’s little sister.

Dakota and Sam are freaking it, and I was not ready! I’ve devoured the previous books in the Denver Bashers series, but this one hit different. It’s raw, and so incredibly powerful. Dakota has been through the wringer with men who chipped away at her confidence and worth. Watching her rise from that, to rediscover her voice and strength, was beautiful. Her journey isn’t just about falling in love again, it’s about healing, learning to trust, and realizing she’s worthy of the kind of love that doesn’t hurt.

And Sam? I’ve read my fair share of sweet, golden retriever, green-flag MMCs, but this man is greener than artificial turf. His gentle protectiveness, his patience, the way he sees Dakota even when she doesn’t see herself? He gave me all the butterflies. I genuinely thought my heart might burst right out of my chest.

And the spice? So freaking sexy, it gave me goosebumps. The story flowed beautifully and kept me hooked from beginning to end. If you're looking for a super sweet, “it’s always been you” best friend’s brother romance with heart, heat, and healing, then this one is it! This book will absolutely consume you.

All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you so much to Sarah for a copy of this ARC.

I love the previous book in this series and I thought it couldn’t be better BUT!! It is!!! My favourite so far (till next one??probably).
The characters are familiar to us and we were teased about what was going on between them but their story is complex and you will feel completely satisfied with this book. I’m eager for the next one.
In this book we follow Sam and Dakota, Del’s best friend and his sister. If you read the previous book you know Dakota’s wedding didn’t go as well as expected. She needs a place to stay and to start to work on her mental health and self-esteem. And then came Sam, her friend and brother’s best friend and teammate. He has a (secret) long time crush on her and offers his home and his experience inside the bedroom 🫠🥵.
The way he encourages her and Dakota finds herself is so beautifully described.

Tropes you can find in this book:
- hockey romance
- secret crush
- forbidden love
- mental health and self esteem representation
- bedroom education 😏😉
- MMC golden retriever with a Secret side 🤫
- dual 1st person POV
- no 3rd act break up

This book has open- door scenes, plenty of them and I love them. The balance between the dominant side and the dirty talk with the soft and worshipping side of Sam is incredible and I really really like it. I think Sarah is a mastermind and a genius in this kind is scenes and I can’t wait to read another book.

My ratings:
5/5⭐️ 2,5/5🌶️

I’ve received this book as an ARC and I’d like to thank Sarah Smith for letting me read this book in advance and allow me to give my honest opinion.

Of pucking course this book follows Sam and Dakota. Dakota has a very shitty fiancé and finally wakes up to it on their actual wedding party. She breaks it off, moves out and is basically free for the first time in forever. Enter Sam, her brother’s best friend, who swoops in and offers her a place to stay for as long as she needs.

And oh my god, from there it just takes off. Sam overhears a very personal conversation between Dakota and her girls and let me tell you… the spice starts simmering right there. This book is sweet, filthy, and just the right amount of oh damn moments that make you fan yourself. Sam? Total book boyfriend material. Their chemistry is insane and the tension? Chef’s kiss.

The best part? No messy second act breakup, no dragged out drama that makes you want to scream. Just a filthy fun romance that gives you exactly what you came for. It is an easy, bingeable ride with spicy scenes that hit just right and a couple you root for from page one.

If you are looking for a lovely filthy romance with actual spice, this is it. Solid four star read and honestly I’d reread just for those scenes alone.

Thank you @lovenotespr for the ARC! I’m definitely in my hockey era right now, and I really enjoyed Off Pucking Course by Sarah Smith. It’s the fourth book in the Denver Bashers series, but can easily be read as a standalone.

The story was fun, the characters were charming, and I always love a good hockey romance. That said, I had a few issues that kept this from being a full 4-star read for me. The smut scenes were a bit cringe at times almost every intimate moment included Sam asking, “Have you done this before?” followed by Dakota either shyly saying no but that she’s always wanted to, or saying yes but couldn’t quite finish (you know what I mean). It felt repetitive and took me out of the moment.

Also, personal preference, but I really don’t love the word “milking” in smut it just doesn’t work for me.

Still, the chemistry was there, and I’m excited to read the next book in the series, especially since we’re getting Coach Porter’s story next!

I always love a hockey romance and this did not disappoint. Of Pucking Course was such a cute friends to lovers story. It was nice to read a book that didn't have any unnecessary drama between the MCs, just for the sake of it.

Sam and Dakota were both sweethearts, who had secretly loved each from afar for years. Dakota had had some terrible partners, resulting in her feeling inadequate and like something was wrong with her.

The only thing wrong, was she was missing the Gentleman defenseman. As soon as they crossed the line from friends to lovers, and Sam became her bedroom coach their chemistry was fire 🔥🔥

I loved how special Sam made Dakota feel, remembering all her favourite things and planning the perfect dates. Not to mention building her back up. We all need a Sam in our lives. Perfect balance of sweet and spice.

They just both brought the best out of each other and enhanced each other's lives. I loved them together.

I'd recommend this for anyone who enjoys friends to lovers, HEA, hockey romance 💗

Tropes:

🏑 Forced proximity
🏑 HEA
🏑 Dirty talk

ARC review

A casa do Sam 🤭🤭

I am so excited that we finally got Sam and Dakota’s story!! I’ve been wanting this for so long! I was so ready for Dakota to finally get a good man!!
The tension was hot, they both, mainly Sam, fought against their feelings for so long and when that tension finally snapped >>>
The spice in this book is hot, everything revolves around her. There’s no unnecessary drama, no third act break up. This book was everything that I love. I love the found family and the emotional healing journey. I loved the additional mystery when it came to a specific person part of the hockey work team, I kept wondering what that was about and when it was revealed I was shook. It was a nice little additional fun story line amongst Sam and Dakota’s love story. Sarah Smith has knocked this one out of the park once again! I can’t wait for the next one!

I've been waiting for Sam and Dakota's story for so long, and this story delivered! Sam and Dakota had mutual crushes on each other, but they never explored anything because he is best friends with her brother. He has always shown up for her as a friend, and when she is in need of a place to say, he offers for her to be his roommate.

Dakota and Sam spend so much time together, and she asks him to be her coach in the bedroom. They use toys, and they have spicy fun in the shower. He is sweet, but he gets dirty in the bedroom, and she loves it! He likes to take control.

Sam takes care of her, and he calls her beautiful. He does so many sweet things for her, and it gave me all the feels.

I'm such a sucker for friends to lovers, and I loved Sam and Dakota so much!

Denver Bashers book 4, how is this story yet another epic tale from Sarah? One word - Feral! Absolutely feral for this book, for Sam being a sweetheart, for Dakota taking charge of her own future, for the whole story! A brothers best friend, mutual pining but forbidden and roommate to bedroom coach story with chemistry that is sizzling! The Gentleman Defensman is a freak in the sheets, of course he is! And we’re all here for it. Love this crew, the ladies because they totally have your backs and the men cos they are a band of brothers we all need in our lives. Banter is on point but it’s the golden retriever Sam that had me hooked. Sooo much love!!

I’ve been so excited to read Sam and Dakota’s book, I love the friends to lovers trope, especially when the guy is an absolute sweetheart but then dominant af in the bedroom. This book was sweet, spicy and left me feeling pure happiness.
Sam has been in love with Dakota for 5 years, but has never once made a move on her out of respect for his friendship with her brother and also his friendship with Dakota. But god when I tell you this man was down bad…. He was down bad

Dakota has also been in love with Sam since they first met but thinks ‘why would a hockey god like Sam go for a girl like me’.

I loved the longing between them both, the sexual tension and just how well they knew each other. Friends to lovers just makes for the best story.

There is no third act breakup and when Dakota’s brother (Del) finds out they’ve been seeing each other it’s handled so well, there’s proper communication and none of this ‘stay away from my sister crap’.

Such a cute book.

Thank you Sarah for the ARC!

Favorite Quote:
“I like how bossy you are, too. New kink unlocked. I like a nice guy in the streets and a bossy dom in the sheets.” This perfectly describes Sam.

When you think this is just another brother’s best friend hockey book. This is a book about Dakota taking back her control and how she views herself. If you ask me she is a bada@@. It takes a lot of courage to leave a marriage that you don’t feel safe in.

Who will ever be there to give her a place to stay when she leaves her ex. Ding we have a winner. Sam her brother’s best friend. Him and Del have been through some stuff but he feels like he owes his hockey career to him. Only thing Del ask is not to get with his sister.

Dakota and Sam have been able to go 5 years with just being friends even though they have had feelings for each other. What could happen while sharing a townhouse together.

Tropes:
🏒Brother’s best friend
🏒Roommates to lovers
🏒Friends to lovers
🏒Secret romance
🏒He’s her “coach” in the bedroom
🏒Dirty talk
🏒Seggs toys
🏒He falls first and harder
🏒No 3rd act breakup!

Sam and Dakota’s story in Of Pucking Course was everything! Having been introduced to these characters earlier in the Denver Bashers series, it was so satisfying to see their happy ending together. Sam has always been down so bad for Dakota, and it’s the depth of their friendship that makes this relationship so special.

Seeing Dakota shift in personality from the person she was in her last relationship was so beautiful. Of Pucking Course is a great example of the power of having the right person there to cheer you on. These characters really bring out the best in each other and that tenderness is absolutely everything.

I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready for this series to end!! I’m super excited to stay in touch with these characters through the next book, One Good Puck. Sarah Smith has never done wrong with a hockey romance, and I have all the confidence that Coach Porter’s story is going to once again be a fantastic read.

Best Friends Brother, Hockey, and a HEA is always a win in my book!

Dakota and Sam are so freaking adorable, and their chemistry is off the charts. They are the epitome of finding someone you are comfortable with and embracing it. This was a fun and easy read, and great for someone who needs a break from angsty or dark romance.

Tropes included:
- hockey romance
- forbidden love
- secret crush
- mental health
- golden retriever MMC with a Spicy secret
- no 3rd act break up
- Dual 1st person POV

Sam's enthusiasm to educate Dakota in the bedroom is just *chef's kiss*. And the mouth on that boy! Sarah did a great job of toeing the line of being out right dirty and making sure she is comfortable and respected. Dirty in a respectful way.

My thoughts:
4/5 stars

For five long and agonizing years Sam McKesson and Dakota Richards have been secretly crushing on one another. Here’s the thing though Del her big brother is “Dirty Del.” Denver Bashers professional hockey team. Del is a two-way center known for being ruthless on the ice. That’s how he got his nickname, Dirty Del. He used to be the kind of player who would throw down over anything and everything. He doled out his fair share of cheap shots too, resulting in him having the most penalty time out of every player in the league a few seasons in a row.

He’s dialed it back after he was traded to Denver last season. Our Coach, Gavin Porter, isn’t a fan of that kind of play and told Del to clean up his act, which he has. She hates it when Del pulls the protective big brother act. That ugly feeling burrows deeper inside of him, along with a fresh wave of guilt. If Del knew he had feelings for his little sister, he’d kick the sh-t out of him. He’s his closest friend. They’ve been tight since they played hockey together in college at the University of Denver. We knew each other better than anyone.

And that’s why he knows that Dakota is forever off-limits. It’s the unspoken rule among all guys: no dating the sister of your friend or teammate. It’s a rule he’s never had any problem with. He has a sister too, and he would have hated it if she had dated one of his friends or teammates. But when he met Dakota, Sam wished he could get rid of that rule. From the second he met her, he liked her. He thinks back to that night five years ago. It was his and Del’s rookie year in the NHL. He and his teammates threw a huge house party after they won the playoffs, and Dakota showed up.

Del was wasted and made me promise to look after his sister so that no creeps would hit on her. Sam promised and hung out with her the whole night. We played beer pong and geeked out over our favorite show, The Big Bang Theory. She was stunning and funny and sweet. From that moment on, Sam had a crush on her. But he buried it. For the past five years, he’s been her friend, nothing more…even though he’s always wanted more. It’s when they hear the DJ say, It’s time to cut the cake. That it snaps Sam out his thoughts. Del, Ingrid and Sam all look at one another because Jake was supposed to give a thank-you speech for everyone coming to celebrate with them.

However, he was trying to straighten his rumpled self. While Dakota stood away from him with her eyes looking red rimmed. Jake cuts a slice from the bottom layer and Jake picks up the piece of cake and holds it up while staring at Dakota. A weird grin spreads across his face. Dakota’s tight smile starts to fade. She starts to shake her head, but a second later, Jake smashes the piece of cake in her face. She stumbles, her back hitting the wall behind her. Jake just stands there and laughs.

The entire crowd gasps, then goes quiet. And Him? All Sam sees is red. He balls his fists at his sides, rage coursing through him as he stomps over to him. F—k trying to be the bigger man. F—k trying to be a polite guest. Sam’s going to pound this
motherf—ker’s face in. Dakota stands there staring at Jake, in total shock. Her husband just smashed their wedding cake in her face. After she made it clear to him that she didn’t want him to do that. He did this, without hesitation, in front of all their family and friends… Dakota studies the smile on his face, how hard he’s laughing.

At her and her humiliation. All the conversations they had about this. She told him multiple times that she wasn’t comfortable with a cake smash to the face. And yet he still did it. The gears in her brain clank together as the realization hits her: her husband is perfectly okay with disrespecting her and humiliating her. That’s how he’s been their entire relationship. He’s always ignored her needs. He’s always ignored what she wanted. Hence, them eloping. She can’t remember the last time Jake made her smile. But she can think of a million times he made her cry.

And that morning when he said he didn’t like the way she did her makeup for their reception. Clarity hits her like a freight train. Jake is a terrible person. He treats her like crap. He always has. She put up with it is because she thought he was the best she could do. He’s not. He’s a piece of garbage. And she doesn’t want to be with him anymore. She gazes at him as the smile fades on his face. He starts to frown like he’s confused about why she’s so upset. When she blinks, tears tumble down her cheeks. Anger and sadness crash through her.

“We’re done, Jake,” she says. “But, Dakota—” Before Jake can say anything more, her big brother Del steps up to him and plants his massive hand on the back of Jake’s neck, cutting him off. “Let’s take a walk,” Del mutters as he drags Jake out of the restaurant. Del turns to Sam, who steps out from behind him. “Take care of my sister,” he says to Sam. This is quite the love story that finally blooms due to close proximity. Ironically that her own brother creates. However, will the saintly Sam allow it to go anywhere? You will love it especially if you have been reading any parts of the series. Because all the gang of friends, family, and teammates make appearances throughout the book.

Before I start, this was an ARC so the story isn't out there. I don't think I put any spoilers in, but as always - proceed with caution

Sarah Smith I almost got really mad at you about this one. My biggest complaint about previous books was HOW, THE HECK IS SAM ALWAYS AROUND, and in this book our boy finally gets traded. For about the first 4 chapters it wasn't mentioned, but it was mentioned that he plays for Denver - which previously, he played for Seattle. Then she helpfully dropped in that he was traded. Thank goodness. So I'm not mad. I don't have to get on anyone for inconsistencies. I'm happy. Also, let's talk about the pure hearted sweetie pie that is Sam. Ugh this boy PINED after Dirty Del's little sister for 5+ years. And he made no moves. I'm sure Dakota would have loved him to make a move, but nah, he let her date/marry the shit bags she dated. And that's not an exaggeration, she dated some losers.

So how does this all come about, I don't know man, read the book! Also, through luck and a bit of light cake face mashing - our boy gets his crush under his roof. She was practically pushed there by Del. Bro, you know this is all your fault if they get together. YOU PUSHED HER THERE. Anyway, Dakota is dealing with heartbreak around a super sexy, hockey player. I wish I had a brother to push a hockey player at me when I had a rough break up. Some girls have all the luck.

Betty White

Anyway, obviously this couple of kids who've lusted after each other for years definitely don't get together. We definitely don't learn about Sam having certain proclivities for bossy behavior when the doors shut. We definitely don't find out that our lucky girl doesn't find out she's totally the luckiest girl in the world. None of that happens. They stay totally clothed and never cross any lines.

lying

So anyway, would I recommend it? Yes! It's not as funny as the other stories and I don't think I cried so I can't give it five stars. But I enjoyed this read. It was your standard hockey romance. It was worthy of my time. I have no regrets, not even one letter.

ragrets

Go read this. It has good spice. It has good love story. There's a little conflict that causes some issues on the way to the Stanley Cup. We learn why Sam is so steadfast in his friendship to Del. And to top it off we get to see the build up to the next story. I also think it's hinted at what trope our buddy Camden Connors will get. Pick this book up, enjoy it, have fun!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.23
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.35

I also want to thank the author Sarah Smith and LoveNotes PR for this ARC, I very much enjoyed the story and wouldn't have gotten to read it without you all!

He's the best friend, she's the sister. They've had crushes on each other since they met 5yrs ago. Its only then when Dakota's life becomes a mess, does sweet Sam step in to be the guy she's always meant to have.
As my 1st intro to this series I'm coming in kinda late to the game- pun intended. This is book 4 of the Basher's series and though you can read this as a standalone, I do feel like I'm missing quite a bit of context from the 1st 3 books.
This story is cute, sexy & an easy romance to pick up if your looking for something "light". Yes there are some themes about insecurities & I wouldn't say "abusive" perse, relationships, but Sam & Dakotas book you could get through in a day or so. I thought the teacher/player dynamic was cute and different. I LOVED how uplifting SS wrote about teaching as a profession! As someone who has family members who are educators, I am a firm believer that a good teacher can positively impact & leave impressions on their students to support their futures.
There was sugar, spice & ALOT of NOT being nice😂👀. If you were hoping for spicy🌶️, you picked the right book. The Sam "be my teacher" in the bedroom angle was a little been, there done that, for me, but I didn't hate how Sarah spun the narrative as more of an exploratory journey for Dakota to find what's pleasurable, safe & comfortable. I will not elaborate on Dakota's intimacy "issues", but that give a lil more perspective Sam & Dakotas excuse of finally giving in to each other.
I do think folks saying that there was a dominant/BDSM aspect is a bit of a stretch- but maybe that's just me coming off Lee Savino's His Perfect Darkness🤷🏻‍♀️. I would just consider it to be bossy, or control "light" behavior if you will.
What I DID absolutely cringe at was EVERY time SS used the word "tummy" in a sex/sexy scene😩. It literally killed me every time I read it, and it was everywhere...
"my p*ssy, my tummy, my chest, my arms and legs." "My tummy flips at Sam's bossy tone."
I just CANT. I get that ma our girl Sarah was really trying to lean into that teacher role for Dakota, but girlie teachers are regular folks too & its unnecessary to use a word you would say to a 5yr old in the middle of a spicy scene. The other too repetitive phrase was Dakota's dialogue saying how much"Sam is such a sweetheart" I'm pretty sure that was said like twice on the same page, like a few times. Like we got it he's a "sweet" guy.
All in all though I did have my quips this was plateable read & I am curious & interested in going back to beginning of the series to see how the other characters background & how that plays out to this book.
We do love Sam & Dakota, they cute & yes we all agree they belong together.
Thank you LN for the ARC, glad I got a peek into the Basher's series.

✨the only reason I'm rating 3⭐️stars is due to my above grievances of cringe & repetition🥴, otherwise I'd prob give it a 4.

“After all this time, after all these years, he’s mine.”

✔️hockey romance
✔️brother’s best friend
✔️friends to lovers
✔️roommates
✔️he’s her spicy “coach”
✔️secret relationship
✔️he falls first and harder
✔️no 3rd act breakup

When Sam (MMC) and Dakota (FMC) appeared in the previous books of this series, it was obvious that they both had a crush on the other but for reasons that only they knew, neither of them said anything — but it was obvious to everyone except the two of them. I love that they finally get together, even though Dakota had to go through something really difficult to get there (her very short-lived marriage fell apart when she realized she deserved so much more and she needed a place to live, so she moved into Sam’s guest room). The progression of their relationship is so gentle and realistic, they take it slow and keep it to themselves while everything is new and potentially fragile. The relationship itself never feels fragile, once they decide to be together they are together, but they have other outside factors that come into play and complicate things.

I love how Dakota finds her voice and stands up for herself, not only with her ex but also with her brother. Though this is a brother’s best friend story and there is the typical will they/won’t they, “we shouldn’t do this because bro code” stress, when it comes down to it Dakota and Sam are in charge of their relationship. Del (her brother) is really a non-issue in the end and I love how maturely everything is handled by everyone involved. The spice is a major part of this book because their relationship starts as a physical one, when Sam overhears something Dakota tells her friends and she asks him to be her “coach” in the bedroom. It turns out that they are very compatible and the things that she needed help aren’t an issue when she’s with him. Things go from sweet to spicy seamlessly, and this is one of those couples that I know will make it way after their book is complete because they communicate so well.

This series is just fun, and if you like sports romance I highly recommend checking this one out. I am so excited for Coach to get his HEA next, there were some pretty obvious hints dropped throughout the story that show who he will end up with and I am here for it.

*Thank you so much to the author (Sarah Smith) and Love Notes PR for the opportunity to ARC read this book! All opinions are my own*

A sweet, steamy read but I missed the emotional chaos

It was a fun, easy-to-read romance set in the world of professional hockey and built around one of my favorite tropes: forbidden romance between a woman and her brother’s best friend. It's a setup I never seem to tire of, and Sarah Smith handles it with a lot of charm and warmth.

Our male lead is the definition of a golden retriever hero: loyal, gentle, funny, and surprisingly vocal in the bedroom (and yes, that part was very entertaining 😅🔥). He’s genuinely endearing, and the chemistry between the couple is both natural and tender. Their relationship is healthy, refreshingly so, actually and that’s worth highlighting. No miscommunication games, no unnecessary angst. Just two adults falling in love in a way that felt sincere and respectful.

The writing is simple, clean, and very accessible. It's not groundbreaking or emotionally intense, but it flows nicely and makes for a very smooth reading experience. I flew through the book without ever feeling bogged down.

That being said, I’m someone who thrives on drama in my romance novels. I crave the heartbreak, the slow-burn tension, the emotional gut punches. So while I liked this book, I didn’t feel it as deeply as I wanted to. There was no real turmoil, no messy conflict and for someone like me who enjoys being emotionally wrecked by fictional people, that left a small void. 😅

On the spicy side, however, this book delivers! The steamy scenes are well-written, well-paced, and feel organic to the story. The tension and physical connection between the characters is solid, and never feels forced or overdone. And our hockey defenseman more than lives up to expectations, no complaints there. 😏

If you’re in the mood for a low-angst, feel-good, spicy romance with a lovable hero and a sweet dynamic, this book will be right up your alley.
And if, like me, you lean toward emotional chaos and high-stakes tension, you might find yourself enjoying it, but not loving it.

Still, I had a good time with it. Just not one of those books that left a mark.

This is the story of Dakota and Sam.

Dakota is an elementary school teacher and the sister of a hockey player. She is close friends with Sam and shares similar interests, including a television show.

Sam is a sweet and dependable hockey player who is best friends with Dakota's brother and has known Dakota for 5 years.

Dakota eloped and held a wedding reception to celebrate with friends and family. At the reception, her new husband disrespected her wishes, making her realize he didn't love her as he should. Her brother and Sam intervened when he embarrassed her in front of everyone.

After leaving her jerk of a husband, she needs a place to stay, so her brother suggests moving in with Sam. Sam agrees to help, even though he knows it will be challenging. Sam and Dakota have had secret crushes on each other for years, and living in close proximity should be interesting.

Dakota and Sam grow closer as they spend time together. He learns about her through her interactions with her students, while she observes his bond with his niece and nephew. When he helps her with a problem, it leads to beautiful, touching, and spicy times. Shhh... this may include lessons, sexy pics, and her discovering what she likes.

Her brother is bound to discover how his sister's relationship with his best friend has evolved. He may be surprised and just a tiny bit angry, but she is an adult now and knows what she wants and deserves. In the end, all he really wants is for her to be happy, and he needs to take that into consideration.

My thoughts:
Sam is a pretty amazing guy.

It was nice to see Dakota evolve into a woman who knows what she wants, likes, and deserves.

If you enjoy:
🏒 Pro Hockey Player x Kindergarten Teacher
🏒 Brother’s Best Friend
🏒 Forbidden Romance
🏒 Forced Proximity
🏒 No Third Act Breakup
🏒 The right amount of spice

I want to thank the author, Sarah Smith, and LoveNotes PR for this ARC.

ARC Review

Dakota Richards hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to love—and her current relationship only proves that pattern. When her world falls apart, the last person she expects to help her pick up the pieces is Sam McKesson—her brother’s best friend. The real challenge? Keeping her heart in check when he’s the one man she’s never been allowed to want.

Sam, known as the “Gentleman Defenseman,” is as solid as they come—on the ice and off. He’s loyal, grounded, and everything Dakota’s never had in a partner. But the lines between loyalty and love start to blur, and what happens if the truth comes out? Because falling for his best friend’s little sister? Yeah, that breaks more than a few rules.

Dakota and Sam’s story wrecked me in the best way. I’ve loved every book in the Denver Bashers series, but this one hit deeper. It’s raw, vulnerable, and emotionally charged. Dakota’s journey—from broken to bold—is full of heartache, growth, and healing. She doesn’t just fall in love—she reclaims her worth. It’s empowering and real and so incredibly moving.

And Sam? If golden-retriever-green-flag-book-boyfriends had a captain, he’d wear the “C.” His tenderness, his quiet strength, the way he champions Dakota even when she doubts herself? Utterly swoon-worthy. He’s not just the guy you fall for—he’s the guy who reminds you what love should feel like.

And let’s talk spice. Whew. It’s electric. Sexy, emotional, and perfectly balanced with the tenderness of their story. The chemistry between them practically leaps off the page.

If you’re into best friend’s brother romances with depth, healing, and a whole lot of heart, this is the one. It’s sweet, spicy, and will absolutely stay with you.

Huge thanks to Sarah for the ARC—this review reflects my honest thoughts and major book hangover. 💙

ARC provided in exchange for honest review.

When Dakota's new husband humiliates her for the last time at their wedding reception, she decides to make a break for it. Her brother's best friend, "Gentleman Defenseman" hockey player Sam, offers his spare room for her to stay in as she has nowhere else to go. Sam's had a crush on her forever, but out of loyalty to her brother, he's never acted on it. When he overhears a conversation between Dakota and her friends about her lack of good sex experience, she asks him to be her sex coach. Sparks fly, but he made a promise to her brother never to touch her... can they overcome everything?

This was a super easy read, with likeable and believable characters. The chemistry between them is top level. Sam is the ULTIMATE golden retriever for his girl, but he'll absolutely fly for anyone who disrespects her - and he's dominant in the bedroom (AKA dream boyfriend material!). Dakota's growth from having no belief in herself, particularly in the bedroom, to being confident, standing up for herself and being sexually awakened is both believable and applaudable, and I loved that for her. There's no third act breakup, which is refreshing, and suited this couple perfectly. It's chock full of poignant moments, gentle humour and feel good factor. I also liked the level of actual hockey content, as so often hockey romances mention the teammates but there's no action. The supporting characters were all well written - particularly Del, as the overprotective brother. I'd rate the spice level as a solid 3 🌶️🌶️🌶️.

Overall this was a really enjoyable example of the genre, and I'm looking forward to more!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book!
