Rate this book

I love crafting stories that blend humour and romance, featuring strong and vibrant characters. Themes of family, friendship, and personal growth are at the heart of my writing. In my stories, I believe in embracing the light because life is too short for darkness.

When the waves are just right—warm and gentle—I fearlessly plunge into the ocean, catching waves like a pro surfer (lots of splashing anyway). Surfing is my sanctuary and my sweet escape.

The piano is my favourite instrument, but my persuasive husband encouraged me to pick up a guitar and learn to strum along (he needed someone to play the chorus). To my surprise, I now rock the guitar, (enthusiasm counts, right?) playing and singing along to my favourite tunes.

So, if you're ready for a spellbinding journey through the realms of urban fantasy and murder mysteries, buckle up and dive into my captivating stories. Prepare to be transported to a world where supernatural beings walk among us and the line between reality and fantasy blurs in the most mesmerising ways.

Imaginative Cosy Mystery

Sometimes a cosy mystery is all you need to drag yourself out of a funk. This series, so far has been an excellent escape. Set in Australia (somewhere I normally don't read about) You have Rhianne a 'halfbreed'. Half witch, half elf... however her Grandfather is a Dryad so technically half elf, quarter witch/Dryad. She views herself as a not very strong green witch but this series watches as she grows into her other powers whilst helping to solve supernatural crimes. Along with a ragtag crew including a genius tech witch, an incubus, and a supernatural forensic pathologist with other regular characters including 2 gargoyles, a half gargoyle lawyer, her mother who is a witch councillor they come together to successfully solve these crimes. There's a little romance along the way but it's Pg.

Absolutely absorbed me!!

I love a story that you get so absorbed in that in the end, you feel a little lost and can not wait to get into the next book. That is how these books are . I enjoyed them so much that it would be hard to wait for the next book. Thank you, P L Matthews, for a wonderful world to get lost in.

It now seems apparent that Rhianne is going to be one of 'those' characters. Seemingly ordinary and potentially outcast due to her mixed race status (species, not colour), but as the story unfolds, she ends up being very powerful indeed. And yet, while a lot of those female protagonists usually annoy the hell out of me, I really like Rhianne, and her journey. This time round, we're exploring her dryad abilities that are now bubbling to the surface. This connection leads her to rush headlong up to Coffs Harbour hinterland where she rushes to the aid of her grandfather... sort of. It's a bit spoilery so I won't talk about that. Just know that Rhianne can get into just as much trouble in the bush as she can in either the city or the elf kingdom. Loved seeing this side of her, her relationship with her grandfather is so much more cozy than the one she shares with her mother, and the growing bond she is encouraging with her father. The mystery itself is fun, and seeing everyone freak out at times thanks to the trees is quite entertaining. Highly recommend series.

I enjoy the series. I like the characters and the creativity with their abilities. However, the overly descriptive writing style (a LOT of similes) can really bog down the motion of the story. I end up skimming parts frequently. I do still enjoy the series and plan to continue with it - just with awareness and probably not as quickly as normal.

At first I did not think I was going to finish the book because it was just too draggy, dry and yes even boring. But since I really like this author stuck with it and am glad I did if only for the fact that Isobel's secret comes out and Nel is more mysterious then ever. Thank you P L Matthews!

Rhianne is learning new tricks. Talking with trees helps her solve this case but watch out, they can be vindictive too.

This is the first book I've read from this author and I was pleasantly surprised by the story. The main character is quite likable. She has a group of paranormal and magical characters who support her quest to investigate the murder of a friend of her grandfather. The cutest of the MC's sidekicks is a magical shapeshifting dog name Toto! A fun read that kept my interest to the end. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves cozies with a paranormal twist and a female protagonist with a bit of attitude.
