This book is like making a shake with yummolicious ice cream and soured milk.
Props
I was hooked to find out the who's, why, how's, and get a look at the completed plot puzzle of her kidnapping.
I loved the environment of the safe house with hottie soldiers, Aunt B, and June and Ward Cleaver parents.
The romance was fair to swoony at various times.
No other women. Female MC isn't interested in anyone but MMC.
The cliffy ending was killer, or not;)
Could've Been Better
The initial chapters were not as emo connecting as they could've been. It was enough to make me interested, but not enough to make me feel her plight, pain, and hopelessness. She's kidnapped, starved, beat, afraid, and mentally degraded... I felt like I was reading an unknown person's diary account of someone else being abused vs seeing it from and through the eyes of the victim.
The aftermath of this abuse once she's rescued is also a little off. It's high angst points paired with too quick, too easy resolve. <<< Readers can deal with one of those but all three hitting the same point is much harder for readers to buy. The therapist and sessions wasn't done well.
Internal bad guy is too stupid, too blatantly obvious. I mean dude wasn't trying to hide his dislike AT ALL.
No, Just No
Speed! Omg if this book were alive, it would be a slug. Much of this book is just day-today-to-day BS. Some of it is kinda fun - paintball & boxing for example. But, the cooking, shopping, walking etc are just boringly slow fluff. Speed this shit up and cut the fat!
Entirely too much boo-hoo crying and mope-woe is me.
He's never had a relationship because he is married to his career. So, he falls in love with a chick that begs him not to go do said job and cries every time he has to leave?!? Hum, okay, that's 1) endearing 2) oh so believable. Not!
She's held for seven months and NEVER sexually assaulted? Happy for her virtue and all, but that's just not believable AT all!
Her dad hates her embarrassing him in the media with shit like ... she trips and the tabs write that she's an addict and she leans over to get a purse and her dress rides up her ass. TWO incidences and they aren't like OMG she's crashed with coke in her purse or some 'ooooh shit' moment. No, it's shit I'd never even read in a tab. She does her best to not even go out unless it's work. So, she's not a Kardashian, LLOHAN type situation. Yet, I'm supposed to buy the info in the closing chapters? Ehh, no!
The why here to the kidnapping isn't exactly believable. I hope with more info in book two, this plot line will flesh out with some believable circumstances.
How many people can be obsessed with one chick? JA~
A bad ass drug cartel person that plays by rules? <<< That character was unbelievable on every level.
Bottom Line
I'm curious as to where this will go. But, the unbelievable shit, the boredom, and the crying nearly killed me.
I'm moving on to book two, but the author doesn't have much rope left to keep me interested.
I'd recommend trying it, especially if you have Kindle Unlimited. You'll get an accurate feel for the flow and temperament of the book by 20-25%.
