Stacy had been so happy when Dwayne Miller first asked her to go steady .Everyone thought Dwayne was super wonderful and so handsome. But since Stacy met Ted Lorimer, her feelings had begun to change. Lately, the only person she could think of was the quiet, gray-eyed boy she'd met on the beach.

Written in the 80s, this book feels more like the 50s, with all of the importance of exchanging rings and going steady. This was my mother's generation, not mine. These terms were antiquated by the 80s.
In this novel, 16 year old Stacy is dating an overbearing cheat named Dwayne that her grandmother and aunt adore, but she is unhappy with. She meets visitor Ted, who is living in his van while he works through his father's recent death. The entire story reads like an ancient culture - can you imagine this happening today? 🙄 But it's a good story, even with the very dated ideas (Stacy's aunt is 38 and positively too old to marry!). Stacy is even mature enough to understand that going steady with a long distance relationship isn't a good idea. Even better, she wants to go to college and develops a solid career plan. Ted is actually a good influence on her. I just wish that books and films did not place so much importance on finding a relationship as the means to happiness for girls. In the 80s, when I was growing up, it seemed that was the end goal of every story- finding a boyfriend would make you happy. 🙄 Even this story ends with Stacy thinking about the probability of their relationship lasting after college.

Actually the description is somewhat inaccurate. Stacey breaks up with Dwayne shortly after she met Ted and meeting him had nothing to do with the breakup. The description indicates that she is wavering between the two fellers and that ain't so. She had been feeling uncomfortable with her relationship with Dwayne for some time and felt she wasn't ready to go steady. Her grandma and great-aunt keep pressuring her to get back together with her ex but it's no go.
