High School Romance, Sweet young adult.Book one in the two-book How I Fall series, ending with How I Fly
Anne Eliot lives in the high mountains of Colorado and loves to shovel snow.
While growing up, Anne hid her own anxieties by hiding and reading book after book. She developed an addiction libraries, to first love, first kisses and her favorite: the happy-ever-after story. This is what she writes today. Now she's a mom of two, and happily married to her own first love.
Anne Eliot’s first YA book, Almost, became a top 100 best selling Kindle book, and was a Readers Choice, Top 12 of 2012 book for Amazon.com at #11, and her other books, Unmaking Hunter Kennedy, How I Fall/How I Fly, and now the Runaway Rockstar Series have all been teen, top 100 bestselling books. Ellen likes Cam. Cam Likes Ellen. And then comes Hurricane Laura.
Cam has been waiting for a morning like this to happen for a long time. Today is the day that he plans to make his intentions for Ellen known. All was going well until this pixie dust wearing whirlwind comes crashing into his life and about ruins it all. Or does it? In fact, Laura may very well be the most perfect distraction ever to ignite his plan. And if a few new friendships come to fruition...so be it!
** I’ve decided Laura’s the closest thing to a living comet I’ll ever meet. Everyone’s always staring at her because she’s extra bright and obviously from a faraway place so they can’t look away. I know I can’t. She’s lucky, too. Instead of how it is when people stare at me because I walk funny or tumble and fall, they’re simply captivated. **
I took my time with this one, but it was one I couldn't wait to get back to after having to step away from it. It called to me. I constantly wondered what these amazing kids were up to. Oh yes, after just starting the book, I was quickly smitten with them all. Cam and Ellen are absolutely adorable. And Laura was a breath of fresh air to the YA literary world (couldn't get enough of her). Not to forget Patrick...I loved his fierce love for his best friend, Ellen. Put these 4 together and you have one power packed friendship and awesomely awesome characters you won't soon forget.
** “I want to kiss you. Like this. Now. If that’s okay.” Just as the wind scatters more golden leaves down over our heads she nods and whispers, “So do I, if that’s okay?” **
Readers who know Eliot's previous work knows that she likes to weave a tragic tale with heart swooning romance! She likes to give us readers a strong female lead, but one that has heart and soul too. A lead we can relate to no matter what she is dealing with. And HOW I FALL is no different. This story is absolutely fabulous and stole my heart from start to finish. Cannot wait to get my hands on HOW I FLY. YES!! The story continues on.
ON REREAD: Probably would round down to 4 instead of up to 5. The things I noted in the review below bothered me a bit more this time around. But I'm going to leave it on here b/c I could be just in a mood.
4.5 stars -- this book had me mega grinning from practically the first page. Honestly, there was so much to love about the characters, and it was just one of those sweet ya romances....well, that is until they ran into conflict and my heart was ripped out when I discovered this was actually a 2 book series!!! Seriously, how did I not know that??
REALLY had a hard time deciding whether to round up or down on this one. The parts that I LOVED had this book at a 5++++. But there were a few little things that bugged me, and one of those was the naivety of Cam. I really disliked how blinded he was to his parents....well, sometimes I felt like he totally saw them for the snobs and jerks they were, but then he'd be like "don't worry, when I explain it will all be good." I just don't get where that came from? It was the same with his friends. Was he really that oblivious to how Ellen was treated? But then I think, maybe it's b/c he was only 16 and truly just thought that good would prevail and all that. So yeah, not sure how I ended up feeling on that in the end. I mean, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cam. Seriously, LOVE that boy. And he and Ellen together were so sweet and just OMG <3's everywhere awesomeness. So maybe that's why I was disappointed in him?
Regardless of that little niggle, I LOVED the characters. I am chagrined to say that when I read the synopsis, I somehow got it into my head that Laura was either younger, or had perhaps a developmental handicap. Honestly, I HAVE NO IDEA where I got that from. Going back and rereading it doesn't enlighten me, so feel free to laugh your butts off. Seriously. Laura was hilarious. She was such a nice addition to the cast, along with Patrick. So it wasn't just a romance developing, but an expansion of both Ellen *and* Cam's friend group. Loved the dynamics between the 4 of them.
Some of the bits in the climax bordered on unbelievable, but it didn't bother me as much as it has in previous books by Ms. Eliot.
And on a weird side note, as a Western Canadian, and HUGE CFL (Canadian Football League) fan, I found the football notes irksome on occasion....but that's a TOTAL personal thing. Honestly, I'm from Saskatchewan, and it's like a religion over there. So to see the CFL sort of relegated to lameness or second best rose my hackles. ;) But since Timmie's was appropriately worshipped in the book, I will forgive the American author. Besides, maybe it's different over in Ontario, especially closer to the border like the town was.
And now that I got rid of that silly aside, I will just say that it is BY FAR my favourite Anne Eliot book. Seriously, most of it had me grinning and laughing and just happy so much my cheeks hurt. Now I will have to impatiently wait alongside the rest of the fans for the conclusion. *leg starts tapping uncontrollably* HURRY!!!
I can't believe this got such high ratings!! From constantly reminding the reader that the MC, like, just barely has CP, to the magical Irish girl who leaves glitter in her wake, to the guys who sound NOTHING (!!!!!) like guys and who text like old people...what...is this.
This book is by FAR one of the best books I have ever read. This book tops every single realistic fiction book I have ever laid my eyes on. For a book to do that, it has to be absolutely amazing.
The book follows the story of a teenager named Ellen Foster. She is attending high school in Canada, loves Tim Hortons, and really wants to win the distinguished WOA photo contest. She has her plans set in place; survive high school and she will be alright. Plus, the scholarship from the WOA photo contest allows her to spend a summer in Ontario, living in dorms. Who wouldn’t want that?
Ellen also just happens to have Cerebral Palsy, or CP for short. Sure, this brings on her own set of challenges, but there is nothing that Ellen Foster can’t do. Not without the support of her friend Patrick, and her oh-so-gorgeous, crush for forever, Camden. Okay, Ellen Foster isn’t dating Cam, but man would she like to.
I struggled really hard at the beginning(which made me think maybe YA contemporary and me don't match) but as I read on, it was very hard to stop. It gets better towards the ending and I look forward to reading the next book.
How I Fall is a beautiful tale of the heart-fluttering first kisses of a boy who thought he wasn’t good enough for her and a girl who thought she wasn’t good enough for him. Yay for group school projects bringing people together!
The story truly melted my heart! Ellen & Cam will stick with you long after you’ve finished the last page because they’re both beautiful individuals despite the struggles they deal with every day. It’s so easy to love their characters. And I loved Ellen's internal monologue! It’s a griping tale that pulls at every one of your emotions: Love, humor, excitement, anger, sadness, betrayal… Cam loves Ellen. Ellen loves Cam. But is that enough? She has her mountains, he has his own. They’re pretty big mountains… Ellen has CP but it's not the main focal point in the novel. Cam.. Poor Cam has an overbearing jerk for a dad who is determined to ensure Cam's future is football. As the reader, you stand in Cam & Ellen's corner and cheer them on through it all. I wanted to jump through the novel quite a few times when it came to Cam's parents! Grrr!
And Ahhh! The ending! I cannot wait for book 2 because I seriously am having heart palpitations over here because of the ending! Must.Know.What.Happens!
Overall, I loved every emotional second of this novel. I highly recommend it to those of us who love a sweet, emotional novel with butterflies & first kisses. <3
Cam is 16, tall, gorgeous, smart, popular, sweet, adorable, and the high school quarterback. Cam's dad was a former football player and is in control of Cam's future. I love Cam! :)
Ellen is the town's "disabled" girl. Yes, she has cerebral palsy. Except now, finally, she can walk without a cane. Well, sort of. She falls. Yet, she never, ever, complains or cries. Ever. She also works hard at her physical therapy - every single day. Ellen finds joy in photography and, of course, her pictures are great! :-) Ellen is 16, strong, sweet, and adorable. :-)
Patrick and Laura, Ellen's friends, are equally as memorable, and strong, as Cam and Ellen. I love Patrick and Laura, too. The foursome are stars. Every single one of them. :-)
Cam has a crush on Ellen. Ellen has a crush on Cam. When they're grouped together on a photography project for class, they're forced to confront their feelings. :-) OH HOW SWEET AND FUNNY! :-) Cam is simply amazing. I can only hope young men exist like him, in reality. Ellen, oh I love that girl! She's so strong, it's inspiring. :-)
However, the climax shocked me. Cam's dad is either evil, mentally ill or just plain crazy. Cam's mother is hardly any better. Cam's home situation is awful. I can't believe Cam could live with his parents and still be so wonderful. From the climax until the even more shocking ending, it gets dark.
Will Cam and Ellen explore their feelings? Read and find out.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion in any way.
A few years ago, before I even started blogging, I was obsessed with finding new books to read. I had Goodreads, but I still didn’t quite have a grasp on things like I do now. But one day I happened across a book in the Kindle Lending Library and I knew it was one I had to pick up. That book, Almost by Anne Elliot, remains one of my favorite books, and is one I haven’t forgot since I read it. So, naturally I was excited for the opportunity to read this series.
The thing about Anne Elliot books is she just knows emotion. She knows how to manipulate the characters in a way that they come alive on the page, and thus come alive in me. In the first few paragraphs of How I Fall, she had me hooked. Not being someone with CP, I have no idea what it feels like. But getting inside Ellen’s head, I understood just for a brief moment how much it impacts her daily life. She made me understand the stress of just wanting to do something as simple as walk to the bus station. I knew from that moment on, I was going to really enjoy these books.
While Cerebral Palsy is an important part of the book, as it is an integral part of Ellen, it is just one part of this story. We get an education into the daily life and struggles of someone with CP, but in addition, we get to see the other normal worries and distractions that come with life…. love and romance included.
This story is told in two POVs — Ellen and Cam. The characters were so vivid and unique that I never found myself wondering who I was reading at the time. They were both so different on the outside, and yet struggling with the weight of the world on the inside. And they both happen to like each other. The path of the romance this book takes is just too sweet for words, even with the struggles they face together.
The two only liked one another from afar, until they are paired up on a photography project, something they both have a passion for. Once the two understand their feelings, they have the difficult task of getting everyone else in their life to be on the same page they are — that just because they are different they can still be together. This ‘forbidden’ love of sorts causes a great tension for the bulk of the book.
There are some amazing side characters as well. Patrick and Laura are done just as well as our main characters and you won’t help but love them. All these kids are so adorable and adorkable it is hard not to smile.
The end of book one is a bit shocking and made me SO very happy to have the second book right there to start. You will definitely not want to wait to read it.
I don't even know how and where to start describing this book. It's absolutely brilliant and I think that beautiful wouldn't even suffice. I love how Anne Eliot created her characters. They're very real and easy to relate to.
This is my first time reading an Anne Eliot novel and I am so happy because I was given an opportunity to read this book. I came across this book earlier this month on Goodreads because I was looking for new book recs. I have been wanting to read this since I saw it because I really liked the blurb. Fortunately, Anne Eliot did not fail me. If any, this book had exceeded my expectations. I thought that this might just be like any contemporary romance, but nope. It's got the right mix of romance, comedy and drama.
I liked Ellen's personality. She's really strong and independent. I salute her for being that strong despite of her disability. She's a great inspiration to everyone. Patrick's and Laura's characters were really amazing background characters. I loved them individually and as a pair, especially Laura, being Irish and all that spontaneity in her. I loved their energy in every scene that they were part of. Camden Campbell... where do I start with Camden Campbell? It seems that I found another book boyfriend, eh? He may look like a total jock-type of guy, but nope! The guy is a total dork! And guess what? I love dorky guys! He's just so cute! The way he blushes, the way he plans his way to talk to Ellen and all other stuff makes my heart melt over and over again.
I also liked the pop culture references, like Teen Wolf and I have to agree with Ellen about Isaac Lahey and Stiles Stilinski. Hahaha! The conflicts in the story, this is where things go realistic. It seems like the author really knows what teenagers are facing and having struggles in life. The way she presented these conflicts and issues really speaks straight to me. It's very relatable and it's one of the things that I love about a book.
I have to admit, the ending was really unexpected and a bit of a shocker for me. I can't wait to get my head into the next book. I am really really excited to read it!
What can I say? I've been through every emotion I have whilst reading How I Fall. I smiled, laughed out loud and cried before I was completely heartbroken, then ended up hopeful. I've been put through the ringer!
This book is refreshing. Anne has taken a topic I (and other readers may not) know anything about and opened my eyes to the challenges some people can face, - whether they be physical or emotional, - in a wonderfully written love story.
Ellen and Cam have been crushing on each other forever. Problem? Cam is the Football Quarter Back Ellen doesn't feel good enough for and Ellen's physical difficulties seem too much of a challenge for Cam to face without seeming overprotective and overbearing. Neither have acted on their feelings until they are forced to work together on a photography project. Both Cam and Ellen realise they have their passion for photography in common and finally confess their feelings for each other. Then they face the challenge of getting everyone else in the town to accept them as a couple, not least Cam's parents.
This story is about how two people (and their friends) can rise to each and every challenge individually and together and come out the other side stronger. Ellen in particular is a very strong character, which is what Cam finds so attractive about her. She is fiercely independent which he sometimes struggles with, but ultimately fascinates him. I love this about Cam. His crush isn't all physical, it's about how much he sees within her and he admires her for it. Ellen is also hilarious! She has a constant internal narrative that we read snippets of throughout the book *Crowd roars. She waves. She bows.* I love it! I do this in my own head sometimes... Then there's the sneaky references to so many of the things that I love: Teen Wolf (who doesn't love that show?!), Harry Potter, Twilight, Dr Who and Cool Running! These made me smile so much. I feel like the characters are my friends.
What more could you ask for? How I Fall is a sweet YA romance that will make you laugh and smile (and if you're me, cry). I can't wait for the next one
Anne recently released How I Fall. She's on my auto buy list, so I quickly added it to my large TBR pile, where it safely landed on top. I started How I Fall thinking I would read a little here and there throughout the day as I was productively getting things accomplished around the house. I found that I couldn't put it down and therefore blame Anne for my untouched to-do list. This story, like Anne's previous books, is a YA. Ellen is 16 and has battled Cerebral Palsy her whole life. She is strong, driven and desperately wants to be seen as something other than the disabled girl. Cam is a star football player that feels boxed in by all the demands that are placed on him by his family. Cam just wants to be able to live his life, and that life doesn't include football. Cam and Ellen are brought together by a chain of events and longtime crushes are revealed. In How I Fall I loved the descriptions of the day by day, or more appropriately, hour by hour struggles that Ellen and Cam experience individually, as well as when they are together. The reader gets this amazing love story, but also this internal struggle of realty vs. how you want to be perceived. While this story does describe and discuss Ellen's CP and her limitations, that is only a small part of the overall story. I think the main theme is about how we all struggle with something, but we can't let that something define or limit us. I do feel the lengths the adults went to in this story to prevent Cam and Ellen from dating was a little exaggerated, but it did add that extra heart pounding element to the story that kept me reading. Warning! This book does have a cliffhanger! My understanding is that this is a 2 book series. Anne if you're reading this, I need book two ASAP!! Overall great story with a very Romeo/Juliet like love story.
This book is a true labor of love written and dedicated to a real life sweet girl with a special condition. It is about teens, high school drama, secret crushes and first kisses. Ellen is this sweet, shy, fragile girl with cerebral palsy who is trying to keep a float at just walking so she doesn't keep failing. Camden is a popular guy who is always in the limelight as a star football player. Patrick is Ellen's only friend and also a football player. Laura is a quirky Irish exchange student who is in a new school looking for true friendships. The foursome are all assigned to work on a class project together. The project is for their photography class and it is truly an amazingly creative project. I love how the author incorporated the art of photography into the story line.Personally I love photography and taking photos brings me just as much joy as it did Ellen. I think that because Ellen has so many physical limitations, her photography makes her feel limitless behind the lens. All four are dealing with the their own physical and emotional obstacles, just as all teens do. Great high school memories are made and friendships are formed. They all learn that friendship is not just lending a helpful hand to keep from physically failing.....supporting one another emotionally is the biggest strength.

So romance novels normally are not my first pick in genre, but I did enjoy the book enough to read it cover to cover (which says a lot for a teen romance). My favorite character was Ellen because of her personality and the way she lives with CP but does not take on an attitude of a victim or a weakling, rather one of the strongest characters in the book. However, I really liked the parts of the book written from the perspective of Cam because I love the way he describes Ellen. My favorite scene is probably at the beginning where Ellen first meets the loveable Lauren from Ireland, and ends up in a situation leaning against Cam before they even start talking; Seriously funny and adorable. My downside to the book is a spoiler to those who read the book, but if anyone is just so eager to know you may message me and I will tell you. Overall, except for the downside, I enjoyed the book for its light and well written nature. Honestly, living in the states I am not used to the setting as Canada, a welcomed change (especially all the Tim Horton’s), and I felt the characters were well written and enjoyable. Though some parts made me annoyingly skim through all the sappiness, the ending really put things into a realistic light I rather enjoyed. There is a sequel titled “How I Fly” and I might just check it out.
Fantastic Young Adult Romance! Combine an unlikely heroine who happens to have CP with a troubled quarterback who dislikes the plan his father insists he follow and add in a dose of attraction, and the result is a deeply moving YA story with lots of twists and turns. Thoroughly enjoyed this read and the sweet first kisses that go along with it. Brings back memories of first crushes and first kisses. Eliot handles the subject matter with such grace. The story is well written and delivers on multiple levels! I look forward to the next one to see what happens next!
so the last straw was when she said "I'd literally died." seriously. no. you didn't. you literally didn't. so sappy. so dramatic. it was a bit much. #puppylovetodamax the CP perspective was interesting though. 2.5 stars. but on the bright side, yay! made my book challenge right at the end! :D cheeee 2014
I love this story! I cannot wait for how I fly! I want to know what happens, where the story goes. This is my 3rd book of Anne's I read and I just cannot wait for how I fly!!!
Having Cerebral palsy myself I didnt particularly like the way its portrayed in this book it seems to be based on generic disability stereotypes which for the most part arent true of CP
1. Sweet, innocent, forbidden, young, and true: 5 adjectives that describe the LOVE in this book. It makes your heart flutter just a little bit doesn’t it? Knowing what that combination of adjectives can hold for the person reading this LOVE story? How it can both lift you and crush you? How it’ll make you laugh, cry, lose your breath, sigh in utter happiness, and never want to put the book down until you’ve read every single last word of it. 5 adjectives that led me to fall IN LOVE with this story.
2. Friends. Laura and Patrick. Once you’ve read this book, those word will be all you need to understand why this is one of my reasons. So ferociously devoted and true. So much fun. So perfect in their special, quirky ways. Never, EVER, have any two people needed friends the likes of Laura and Patrick than Ellen and Cam, and no two people could ever be more worthy of such perfect friends than Ellen and Cam either. With a bit o’ luck, the fairies of fate have sprinkled enough magic glitter on this fantastic foursome that there’s no way life will ever take them away from each other permanently.
3. First kisses and big dreams. That’s what a YA romance is all about. And few write them as well as Anne Eliot. She has mastered the perfect combination of sweet and clean that makes you not miss the steam and sizzle of typical romances. You’ll be so wrapped up in your cocoon of “awwww” and “sigh” that you won’t care that it’s affecting your heart rather than your lady parts.
4. Real world problems. I understand that reading allows you to escape the mundaneness of real life, but I think I get more fully lost in a book when it’s something real, something I can relate to, whether from personal experience or observation of others’ experiences. And I think it was brilliant work on the part of Ms. Eliot to take real life struggles—both common and less common—and use them to not only educate us on their existence and how they affect the lives of those fighting said struggles, but to also turn them into a captivating story that will grab your heart at the very beginning and refuse to let go, even at the very end. (I suppose this is the best place to mention that there will be a sequel to this book, so you will be left hanging.)
There are so many ailments that tremendously affect the everyday lives so many people all over the world. As a person living with epilepsy—which can affect the control I have over my body—I can empathize with what Ellen struggles with every day of her life with cerebral palsy. You’re constantly planning and backup planning everything to ensure the best outcomes. Spontaneity goes out the window…a freedom that so many people take for granted.
And then there’s the case of Cam. Being forced into a future that he doesn’t want, completely dominated and bent by his parents to create the version of him that they want, the future for him that they want, the public image of themselves that they want. Forcing Cam to consider drastic, dangerous measures to finally get out from under their thumbs and be who he truly wants to be, to love who he truly loves. I can also empathize with Cam. Though I think I would’ve always been able to take the college/career path that I wanted to, every other aspect of my life was dictated by an overbearing, overprotective, overjerkish step-dad. My mom didn’t agree with a lot of the outrageous reasons he found to ground me and make me a prisoner in my own home. But she didn’t stick up for me as often as she should have. Once she finally did—which was actually over a boy, a boy that is now a man and my husband—she ended up divorced. So, while reading this book, I could feel Cam’s desperation so strongly that I wanted to move from my nice, warm, southeastern US home to that frozen cluster of craziness known as Canada just so I could take him away from his sordid, self-righteous, snobbish parents and let him live with me until he was legally free to be on his own, let him know that love shouldn’t be used as a weapon—it should be taken as a gift and cherished.
5. I am a fierce Grammar Nazi and obsessive editor at heart, so I obviously noted any and probably all editing/grammar/punctuation errors. However, I couldn’t give two large blue slushies to the face about it because the story was THAT GREAT! I was given a copy of this book for an honest review, and it was an incredible unbirthday gift. Anne, though it may seem improbable, I both love and hate you right now because I love this story so much that my heart is literally crushed over the fact that I have to wait for the sequel. Amazing work on your part, as always, and my heart will be crying until you get Book Two into my hands.
I do have one request (other than that you get this book finished and on my Kindle ASAP, of course). Please, please, please, with nacho cheese on top...write me into this story and let me do some sort of damage to Cam’s parents. I’d love to go all Laura pixie-crazy on Cam’s mom, and I’d give up the beloved Banana Moon Pie beside me to get to throw the first punch at Cam’s dad. A swift kick to his manhood would be sufficient, but that dude really needs to be punched. Why not by the reader who, despite her hate of the cold, wants to live in this town and be best friends with this wacky-yet-amazing group of kids.
Anne, thank you for sharing this story with me and the world. Readers, go buy this book and start to believe in fate, pixies, and young, star-crossed love.
This book reminds me of my own sister who was born with cerebral palsy due to doctor. Error. But it's not only about been being disabled it's a true high s,cool love story
So, there's feels and frustration in abundance. Also, this is a series and it doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, but it ends in a way in which my life is pretty much ruined until I get paid in a couple days so I can buy the blasted audiobook and finish the series. I am wallowing here.
This is the second of Anne Eliot's novels that I read. And wow, just wow. This book truly just grabbed me with a hook to the heart and started tugging. I guess that some of my initial love for the book comes from me currently working with people who, like Ellen, have CP (and other physical or mental disabilities). I actually started to check this book out when I was at work. I took a quick 5 minute break to regain my focus and spent it looking at the cover and reading the copyright-pages and so on and all of a sudden my eyes just froze. Did I read that right? "2.___ High School Teen with Disability 3.___ Cerebral Palsy". Cerebral Palsy? As in CP? As in what most the patients that come to my work has? Please don't mock me, see English isn't my first language and I don't have any education in medicine, but Cerebral Palsy did seem to be the English word for Cerebral Pares (as it's called in my native tongue). And sure enough... when I reached "7.___ Hemiparesis" I knew I was correct. After this I just couldn't wait to get away from work and start reading the book.
And when I did? I was instantly swept up in the words of this story. I just love the way Anne Eliot writes, in all her novels the words just go strait in to my being. Making reading as easy as breathing. But what shook me most was not the language itself, it was the initial description of Ellen. Of her thoughts. Just a couple of weeks earlier I'd been talking to one of our patients and it was as if Ellen was channeling her. The way we were introduced to her way of planing stuff out. The slowing down, the imbalance, the risk of falling... (tug, tug, tugging me in to the book by the hook in my heart!)
The story is so sweet. The looking, pretending not to look, playing out scenarios inside the head,... Them getting to know one another and trying their best. Fighting for what they want and struggling to get by with the lot they were given. The tentative like that grow in to love, the need for the other one. For others to understand. The joy of sharing dreams and being somebody else's rock. Even though the dark parts of people not understanding, not accepting are rough (and oh the feels) they create the common goal. To be together. (tug, Tug, TUG!)
Lets not forget the people the story revolves around. Sweet, hardworking, patient Ellen. Adorable (tug), charming, miserable Cam. The "oh I SO want a friend like this" best friend Patrick. And the lovely little miss Laura London - I really don't know if I wish to be her or keep her as a pet!?
This book is just a delight from beginning to end. And I'm sorry but come ON? Are you really allowed to leave us hanging like this? Please, pretty please just give us the next book now? Like PLEASE? I can't wait to find out what's going to happen!
Once more - a big THANK YOU to the author for bringing us another story to fall in love with! (tug, tug!)
--- Please note that although I did get this book as a gift from the author I was never asked to do anything in return. Not even write a review. So all the words and opinions above are my very own and I stand by them down to the very last (maybe misspelled) letter.
How I Fall is the first book I have read by Anne Elliot, and it was a real treat. Young Adult books are not my usual read, but I do enjoy some of them. It all depends on the blurb on the back.
How I Fall is about a 16 year old girl, Ellen, who has Cerebral Palsy, and how she deals with all that goes along with that, high school, friends and first love. Ellen, is not your typical teenager. She tries to be, but sometime her CP gets in the way. She is constantly tripping and falling down, thanks to one weak arm and one leg that sometimes does not cooperate with her brain.
I adored Ellen! She was strong, brave and funny. She had this constant dialog in her head about every situation she was put in. Yes, she talked to herself, which to me made her character stronger. I could just picture her in my head, and hear what her voice sounded like. She has had a crush on Cam Campbell for as long as she could remember. She thinks that he doesn't notice her, after all he is a star football player, popular, and could have any girl he wanted. What Ellen doesn't realize is that he wants her!
Cam is a star football player, smart, over 6 foot tall, and is in love with Ellen Foster. I liked Cam for many reasons. The main reason being is that he genuinely cared for Ellen, and wanted to protect her. He took up for her, when the kids at school teased and laughed at her constant falling. He took up for when his parents were talking about her and calling her 'the handicapped girl'.
I did not like Cam's parents. I wanted to actually whack them a few times. What grown person is constantly putting down another child, especially a partially handicapped child that they don't really know. It really irked me that his mother was constantly talking about Ellen like she wanted to have CP.
I enjoyed how Ellen and Cam's friendship blooms into love. It was sweet. I enjoyed the secondary characters of Patrick, Ellen's best friend, and Laura the new girl at school. Besides Ellen, Laura was a favorite of mine. She is from Ireland, funny, friendly, and a little quirky. I would have loved to have had a friend like that. She was always looking at the bright side of things. She brought Ellen out of her shell, even if that did involve a lot of glitter.
How I Fall is very well written. The story held my interest right up to the very end. You are left with a little cliffhanger at the very end, but then the book will pick back up in the next one, How I Fly, in the series. I will defiantly be reading the next book in the series, and anything else that Anne Elliot writes.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sweet, teen romance.
Kissing: light kissing Sexual Content: None Cursing: A few, but nothing vulger
“Could I ever explain that when I’m around her, every inch of me becomes poised and ready to throw myself in her direction? All for the sole purpose of ensuring her a softer landing should she fall?”
Sigh sometimes you just need a sweet love story about two people falling in love. I haven’t read HOW I FALL since my last reread in 2018 but this story still stands up years later. It’s about our teens Ellen and Cam that are from different social circles who have secretly crushed on each other for years. Ellen believes Star quarterback Cam is way out of her league while Cam thinks Ellen is way too good for him. A tornado in the form of a quirky Irish girl finally brings these two together and my heart was a puddle of feels with how precious they both are. Sweet kisses, ice trees and slumber parties made me realize that young adult romances still pack a punch to my heart. And then throw in disapproving parents (who I hated), Ellen dealing with her CP and an ending that broke my heart and this was another successful reread. I’m diving into book two right away because I need these precious babes to get their HEA.

❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️ One of the reason Anne Eliot is one of my favorite authors is because she takes real life issues and creates a beautiful story with it. This is another example of that. I adored Ellen & Cam and watching their relationship blossom was sweet but also a little sad. I had such respect for Ellen and all the hardships she goes through day to day. Instead of letting it get her down she tries to see the beauty in all through the lens of her camera. Cam *sighs* was just amazing but my heart broke for him that he didn't have the support and love at home he needed. What he did have was a incredible girl who loved him and friends that would always have his back. I didn't know this was a two part series so when I got to the end I was shocked & sadden. I'm anxiously waiting for book two to see where this story ends. Thank you Anne for bringing attention to such a heartbreaking subject but instead of making it seem like the end of the world, you show that no matter how dark it may seem there is always some light that will break through & shine<3 4.5 Stars!!
How I FallA uniquely, truthful, normal amazing love story...
The truth can hurt, but it's so insightful. This is truly a love story which should be read by all. We all have a crush on that one special person, right? And you think they are way out of your league? Well anything is possible. Especially when Ellen and Cam feel the same way about each other and their love for photography pulls them closer with help from their crazy friends. Is the whole thing fate?... This book illustrates the insight and perspective of Ellen who just happens to have a mild form of cerebral palsy which affects the left side of her body. However there is so much more to this book then that! Showing how the daily limitations can be fought and won, one step at a time. Cerebral palsy is simply one piece of Ellen's thousand piece puzzle. As well as spreading awareness for cerebral palsy (something which I am passionate about, due to having mild cerebral palsy myself) the insight is so true and modern. Giving a fresh perspective which must be read. I can tell you now that there isn't another fiction book out there which gives you this level of accurate insight, yet I feel this is not the primary focus of the book. I also loved how through out the book there were parts which were what was going through Ellen and Cam's mind, showing how Ellen hides certain things, just like a normal teenager. A normal teenager which has extra challenges on an extraordinary journey to be with her true love. A must read which will leave you wanting more from the amazing author Anne Eliot.Anne Eliot
This book wasn't just your traditional high school love, it was so much more than that. It was the scary truth of falling in love with someone who is so different than you imagine, but somehow, it makes perfect sense. How I Fall was able to shed light on the easy and hard parts of falling in love, all while keeping it upbeat and heartwarming.
I so wanted to scream at Cam in the beginning when I learned that he has had a crush on Ellen for all these years. I know its hard to talk to your crush and all, but starting a conversation can get you places! So I was very happy with how they came about being able to talk! I found it so adorable how Cam, the jock and high school quarterback, was so down to earth and didn't fall for any of the queen bee admirer's. He had seen Ellen's beauty in her strength, from living with CP for all her life. Despite Ellen's Cerebal Palsy, she really seemed to be a normal teenage girl to me!! I loved how she never let her condition stop her from pursuing her dreams and living her life as much as she could. I admire her!
I'm sorry that this is a spoiler but I WANTED TO SCREAM WITH PURE JOY EXCITEMENT HAPPINESS ELATION ETC when they kissed!!!!!!! It was the most perfect surreal moment. I even made them a hashtag : #camllen
Although their relationship was not picture perfect, Anne made it work so, so well. Their love for one another is true and real and I was gripping my kindle for dear life while reading. Their twisted lives made the plot so very action packed. The plot twist in the end almost killed me. You'll know what I mean when you read this book, as I suggest you to go do NOW!
So I really need the 2nd book right now, as in this second right now. Waiting for it to magically appear in my hands. *prays to the book gods for it*
How I fall is an incredibly sweet story of love, courage, persistence and character. Although Ellen Foster is afflicted with Cerebral Palsy, she doesn’t use it as an excuse to give up or maintain the status quo. She gives life her all working hard to do simple things that most of us take for granted, like walking. Most of Ellen’s classmates were mean and cold hearted. They didn’t acknowledge her unless it was to complain or make a disparaging remarks about her. Even most of the adults she encountered wanted to keep Ellen compartmentalized as a handicap kid. That was all they could see. It was all they wanted her to be, and that kept Ellen working hard to try and close the gap between her typical school mates and herself.
Ellen tries hard not to embarrass herself by falling in front of her classmates. She does well until the new girl Laura London knocks her down, helping Cam Cambell find the courage to help Ellen up and talk to her.
Ellen has a secret crush on Cam. Cam has a secret crush on Ellen. I enjoyed watching their relationship start and grow. They are so cute together. I love how even though Cam seems to be the guy that has it all he wants and needs Ellen as much as she wants and needs him. That being said, I hate his father. Absolutely positively HATE his father!!! And I can’t wait to find out what happens to them all in How I Fly. Hurry Anne, I can’t wait!
I was impressed by how real, sweet and heartbreaking the story was. Anne nailed the teenage angst, butterflies in the belly and first kisses. I highly recommend this book for anyone and everyone who enjoys a book that sucks you in and makes you feel.
Cam is in love with Ellen, he has been for years. He has a plan to approach her oh so casually and insert himself into her world, but that all goes awry when a whirlwind (aka new girl Laura) knocks Ellen off her feet. Literally. While Cam initially curses his bad luck, he actually starts to find that Laura may in fact be the answer to his prayers! Laura is oblivious to the chaos she causes and I loved her for it! She made me laugh so many times and reminded me of someone from a film although I won't say which one, because later in the book someone actually calls her this characters name and that made me laugh too! Ellen and Cam are the most unlikely couple in school. He's the all star football player, she's the photography geek, who also has CP. She has had a crush on Cam for years too, and is completely unaware of his feelings for her. She can't believe that he would be interested in her so he has to do a lot of work to convince her he is genuine. They face a lot of opposition though, Cam's father for one. He is adamant nothing will stand in the way of his plans for a football scholarship. I don't want to give too much away so all I will say is that I loved this story so much, and I think I've highlighted at least half of the book! It is a truly fantastic story that's full of wonderful moments, loveable characters and epitomizes everything I love about YA books.
How I Fall is definitely the first book I've read in which one of the characters has cerebral palsy, and although this condition certainly affects the story, the book is about so much more. The book is not only an education into the condition of CP, and an excellent portrayal of living and succeeding with this condition, but it is also exemplary in dealing with so many important YA themes such as first love, insecurity, and the future/reality after high school.
The book is told from the POV of both Ellen and Cam, two characters that from the outside could not be more different. One of the things I love about Anne Eliot's writing is her ability to write books in seamless, rotating POVs, male and female. She is so good at this and How I Fall is no exception!! We learn through the book that Ellen and Cam are more alike than they appear from the outside and to their peers, but also that they want the same thing (and not just each other).
I absolutely loved this book, and I have loved all of Anne Eliot's books -- they are the perfect YAs and they are all so different! Anne's writing is character driven and you will be hard pressed to find other YAs that get so into the heads of characters.
