Advancing Heritage Languages
Heritage languages are languages spoken at home by children of immigrant families. Typically, the children have no trouble
communicating with family members when they are young, but this changes as they get older. Research studies have shown that many heritage languages are lost even within one or two generations. In part I of this book we discuss the expectations and barriers regarding heritage language development. Chapters in Part II explore a heritage language case in more depth with examining heritage language classes as well as the accessibility and comprehensibility of reading materials available for heritage language acquirers. Chapters in Part III conclude the discussions by evaluating how not to improve heritage language competence and how to include heritage languages and cultures in instruction.
