Murder never shocks Leonora Spencer. Violence is a fact of life in Victorian London, and most of the corpses Leo attends to inside her uncle’s city morgue are its victims. But when she witnesses a woman’s death at a popular night club, and then follows a suspicious hooded figure retreating from the scene, Leo lands herself in the center of another complex Scotland Yard investigation—right where Detective Inspector Jasper Reid doesn’t want her.

In the several weeks since the unconventional Leo Spencer helped him solve an explosive case, Jasper has kept the willful morgue assistant at arm’s length. Now, the bride of one of the city’s most dangerous crime lords has been poisoned, and his primary witness is the very woman he’s been trying to avoid—if only because she is as fascinating as she is irritating.

Disregarding strict warnings to stay out of it, Leo insists on helping Jasper sort through his inquiry. When a death portrait of two mysterious children is found in the victim’s handbag, and an unsolved Jane Doe case that haunts Jasper resurfaces, he and Leo begin to question if more than one crime—and killer—is at play. But discovering the truth might also mean walking into a carefully laid trap.

Method of Revenge is the second book in Cara Devlin’s new romantic historical mystery series set in Victorian London. The Spencer & Reid Mysteries are perfect for fans of PBS Masterpiece Mystery’s Miss Scarlet & the Duke, and readers of Irina Shapiro, Andrea Penrose, and C.S. Harris.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Cara Devlin is one of my favorite historical mystery writers and I was very pleased to get to read this book and it did not disappoint. The book can be read as a standalone but as with any series you will benefit from reading the previous book. The Victorian era has a lot of change in the status of women and the working class. Leonora (Leo) is a brilliant women confined by the strictures of the era and this is noted when she tries to help Detective Inspector Jasper Reid. Her help is not wanted and often is a detriment to Jasper's position due to being female. The murder and mystery are well done, and the writing held my attention. The pacing was good, and I enjoyed the way the murder was solved as I didn't see it coming. The shocking twist at the end has guaranteed that I read the next book!

This was so good, I burned through it and need the next one right now.

This was gripping, fast paced and full of longing and angst. The mystery was so well woven and quick while in contrast, the romance burns so slowly, its beautifully excruciating. We have hand touches and hand clasps and covert looks, all helping the build up to when these two finally *hopefully* get together.

And that ending… aaaaaah! How will I make it to June?

Thank you to Cara Devlin for the complimentary copy, can’t wait for the next one.

Happy Release Day!

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but this one was a masterpiece. I love that we won’t have to wait long for the next book because I need it now!

Leo witnesses the murder of a young woman (because that’s what happens when you’re the heroine in a murder mystery series; people just keep dropping dead around you). It’s the perfect reason to get involved with the investigation, so she does. Jasper is obviously less enthusiastic about it, especially since the grieving widower is a well-known mobster.

Solving the mystery was fun as always, and my theory was correct 💅. I also enjoyed the mystery surrounding Leo’s family, which is slowly unfolding in the background. The chemistry between Leo and Jasper was delightful, and that cliffhanger was the best cliffhanger in the history of cliffhangers. I need to know what happens next!

Thanks to the author for the arc and to my bestie Kristina for buddy reading and fangirling over Jasper.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It’s a Cara Devlin book. Of course it’s going to be complicated and messy and make you want wish you could continue the story right away. I LOVED it.

How silly of me to think that Leo and Jasper would come together quickly after the father figure they share died in the first book of this series. How silly of me! Jasper distances himself to protect his reputation at work and Leo is busy with her work and home situation. As usual, though, a dead body brings them together. The mystery is excellent and if you’re the type of person who tries to figure everything out before the main characters, best of luck to you!

The mystery wraps up a with a bit of story to go and that’s where you’ll have to buckle up for a bit of a roller coaster (though one you probably anticipated). The fireworks are top tier and will leave you shocked, sad, and desperate for book three.

I was given early access to this by the author, but the opinions in this review are my own.

One Liner: Fast-paced and gripping

Leo (Leonara) is used to dead bodies and sees them in her uncle’s morgue. However, she ends up as a witness when a woman dies at a popular nightclub and follows a suspicious hooded figure around the corner.

After the previous case, Detective Inspector Jasper kept his distance from Leo. He could do without the mixed emotions she inspired in him. However, the current case and Leo’s involvement make it hard.

As they try to find more clues, Leo and Jasper should be careful about not walking into a trap. But can they see it before it’s too late?

The story comes in Leo and Jasper’s third-person POVs.

My Thoughts:

While the book works as a standalone, I recommend reading the previous one for the overarching plot. There is enough background information if you haven’t read the first book.

It has been a few weeks since the previous case, and the main characters are living their lives (with teeny new developments). The book starts with the murder, so we are plunged into the plot right away.

The narration deftly balances pace, intrigue, and emotion. The push-pull attraction between the two is stronger, though they are focused on the case and the dead bodies that have to be examined.

The mystery is interesting. I like how it tackles the problem of using harmful chemicals like arsenic in making wallpapers and their deadly side effects. There have been a few books on this. Here, it is used for the mystery track, so we don’t get a lot of detail but can understand the extent of damage it caused and how the reason was suppressed.

We also get some details about their pasts. I kinda guessed the big reveal in book one, but oh boy, it still didn’t prepare me for the cliffhanger. Argh… I hate waiting. At least, it’ll be only 2-3 months since the next book is scheduled for June. I can distract myself with other books.

The dark and bleak setting of Victorian London is tangible without slowing down the pace or distracting us from the central plot. I’ve read a few books with this setting and found that I enjoy them a lot. It’s gritty and ruthless, but with touches of compassion and love.

NGL, I’m invested in the slow-burn love track and can’t wait for the next book. The conflict is real, so it’s a huge hurdle to cross. Can they do it? They have to!

To summarize, Method of Revenge is a solid second book in the series with intrigue, danger, and a cliffhanger (I can’t get over this, lol).

Thank you, author and Book Sirens, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Took my breath away

I was so excited to receive an ARC of Cara Devlin’s latest book Method of Revenge. I loved the first book in the Spencer and Reid Mysteries, Shadow at the Morgue, which kind of left us hanging. When I got the email with the book attached, I left my husband sitting at the table and said, “I’ve got to go. I’ve got to read this book.” I started the book at 6:00 pm and finished at 10:30. I couldn’t put it down.

The book starts where we left off. Leo Spencer is assisting her uncle at the Morgue and Jasper Reid is frustrated by a case he can’t solve. It has been several weeks since Leo helped solve a previous case Jasper had been working on, but now he is keeping her at a distance. That is about to end when Leo witnesses a woman’s death at a popular night club. Jasper tries very hard to keep Leo out of the case, but she continues to insert herself anyway. Jasper recognizes that Leo has a lot to offer in the investigation, but he also gets in trouble with his detective sergeant when she is involved. It creates a lot of tension in the story.

I love the little glimpses of that attraction Leo and Jasper try so hard to ignore. The few moments of tenderness between them gives hope for the relationship to come. These slow burn moments between the two are one of the things I love best in the series. I was expecting another cliffhanger, but I wasn’t expecting what happened. For only the second time in my long reading career I was stunned by a revelation in a book. When I turned and saw the last page, I literally sat up and said, “No-ooo!” I wanted to keep flipping the pages and see where we are headed next. Because this was an ARC, it didn’t include the teaser chapter that will be in the full release copies. I’m so glad I only have to wait until June. I’m beyond excited to see where the events of this story will take Jasper and Leo. I encourage readers to pre-order this book so you will get your copy right away. Then run, don’t walk, to your favorite reading spot and dig in. It’s an amazing book.

Wow…and Wow!

Once again we’re thrust into the Victorian world of Detective Inspector Jasper Reid and Leonora Spencer.
Leo is at a nightclub run by underworld crime figure Eddie Bloom with her friend Dita when she notices a woman in a dark cloak talking to another woman at the table behind her. The cloaked woman leaves just as the woman sitting at the table collapses and dies. Leo recognises it as poisoning and attempts to follow the cloaked figure. She looses her in the London fog.
The dead woman is Gabriela Carter, wife to Andrew. The Carters are front runners of the East Rips, a vicious gang operating in London’s East End.
DI Reid is called to the scene, takes in Leo’s presence, and is not pleased. Due to Leo’s remarkable powers of observation and memory, he pays attention to her surmises, including the fact that inside Gabriela Carter’s purse is a death photograph of two children.
With more warp and wefts than thought possible, this current investigation weaves down a complex path, complete with a macabre dance of deaths, including assorted memories and situations, leaving us, along with Leonora, confronting a painful and distressing truth!

An ARC from the author.

CW: death; grief; violence; dementia; child death

Oh. My. God.

It’s been a long time since a book left me literally gobsmacked. But that was my actual reaction after finishing Method of Revenge. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would!

I need everyone to read this series IMMEDIATELY, because you are seriously missing out on some of the best storytelling I’ve seen in a while.

Be warned – there is a cliffhanger at the end of this and it will leave you screaming (well, it left me screaming!). You can start to see the pieces coming together as you head into the final chapter, and I was both excited to see if some of my theories were correct, but also dreading where I thought it might be going. It was a whirlwind of emotions, but I loved every second of it.

While I enjoyed Cara Devlin’s start to her new Spencer and Reid Mystery series, book two knocked it out of the park, as I think the story and character really found their footing. Shadow at the Morgue had to do a bit more heavy lifting with introducing us to Leo and Jasper and this world of 1884 London we are inhabiting. But in this book, Devlin was able to delve deeper into these characters’ backstories, personalities, and motivations in really fascinating ways. I feel like I was able to connect better to Jasper and Leo in this book as more pieces of their backstory start to get revealed. I love how they’re not perfect people – they both have their flaws and foibles. But that makes them feel human.

This book is so expertly plotted – I am in awe. The mystery in this was deeply layered with so many twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat right up until the end! I also love how this mystery helps push what feels like broader series plot points forward, in both expected and unexpected ways. The little details! I’m so glad I kept extensive notes on both Shadow at the Morgue and this book, as it was fun to go back and look at seemingly small things that actually could help connect the dots once things are revealed. There is clearly still more to uncover with the broader series arc, and I cannot wait to see what is in store.

Watching Jasper and Leo working together on solving this murder mystery gave me all the feels. The tension between these two – and I’m not just talking romantic tension (though that is a BIG part of it)!. The push and pull between Leo being part of Jasper’s official police investigations is one of my favorite things about this series – it’s very reminiscent of PBS’s Miss Scarlet and the Duke. Leo’s so good at putting the puzzle pieces together, and Jasper can see that. But unfortunately, there is still a lot of sexism at play in Scotland Yard that paints her as the odd one and puts Jasper in a challenging position between his job and his relationship with her.

Devlin is a master at the slow-burn romance. And my god, the slow burn be SLOW BURNING. The sexual tension between them is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Jasper and Leo’s feelings toward each other are more apparent in this book, but they’re still simmering below the surface. I loved seeing Jasper’s slightly lighter, more playful side come out in moments when it is just him and Leo. I was LIVING for all those little moments that show their true feelings – give me all the gentle and unexpected hand touching! But if you thought things would be easy for them on the romance front, think again. This is a slow-burn romance after all! I cannot wait to see how Devlin will handle the romance in the future books. I know I’m in good hands, but it will be the most delicious slow-burn torture in the meantime before Leo and Jasper can get a happily ever after, and I am HERE for it.

I was an incoherent mess after finishing this book in the best way. I literally couldn’t stop thinking about this story and these characters for days on end. I loved everything about Method of Revenge, and I am so grateful that Cara Devlin churns out these books so quickly, as the wait for book 3, Courier of Death, is, thankfully, quite short. I NEED that book as soon as possible.

Seriously, I need everyone to read this series so I have more people to scream and fangirl about it with. Everyone I know who has read it has loved it! These books need to be read in order, but trust me, they’re worth it and perfect for fans of the Veronica Speedwell or Lady Sherlock series. PICK THEM UP!

Thank you to BookSirens for the ARC! All thoughts, ideas, and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Another great multilayered mystery by Cara Devlin! The pace was slightly slower than first in the series installment, but covers a lot of ground focusing on the details of the crimes and the backstory of the characters.

High praises for Allie Rose, the talented narrator.

ARC Review

Once again, I felt like the luckiest reader to receive this ARC from Cara. It definitely delivered!

Let me just tell you– if I read a book and IMMEDIATELY need the next book a second later… then it’s a good sign. A really good sign.

And that’s just what happened when I finished this second book of the Spencer & Reid series. When I say you better emotionally prepare for one of the most mind blowing endings to a book, I mean it. The kind of ending where your jaw literally drops, hand clutches your mouth, and lots of internal screaming. It left me clutching my kindle in desperation, hoping the next book would just appear on screen while I tapped frantically for the next page.

Leo and Jasper’s relationship definitely takes a turn in the book, as it opens after the Inspector’s death. This pivotal event affects both main characters, as he was a father figure and clearly a catalyst for change in their youth. We see a deeper, more complex and emotionally charged connection blossom between these two, and I loved every second of it. It’s slow, but I tend to appreciate the slow burns in which it simmers just the right way. Cara delivers again.

“He opened a gap in his collar, exposing a golden triangle of skin at the base of his throat… She blinked and looked away from his neck.”

Well, I certainly squealed at this moment and every other moment we catch Leo and Jasper’s physical attraction to each other.

(And for those who know, I love spice . So I welcome all the flaming moments to come for this grumpy detective & rule breaking lady detective!)

“You could do that too,” he said.

“Do what?”

“Marry.”

The KITCHEN scene– let me just take a moment to emphasize the kitchen scene of ch 9. Oh. My. Goodness. Jasper entering from the back door… Leo in her nightgown and her hair curling wrappers, lol! These two are scandalous, I loved it. And the way he takes her wrist at the end of the chapter made me reminisce about the scene in the first book’s ending, when he reaches for her too. This man cannot restrain himself! (and we love him for it).

And even more endearing (probably my favorite Leo & Jasper moment) was when he spontaneously invited Leo and her family over to his house for dinner. I think deep down he certainly was hoping for time alone with her, but I do think it was very touching for him to have invited her uncle and aunt.

We watch Leo evolve more into finding her identity. We witness her realizing that solving crimes and mysteries makes her feel alive and purposeful, and as the reader, I was rooting for her to keep pushing through the constant barriers in her way. In this book, I think we watched her encounter even more barriers, especially the significant reprimanding from Jasper’s boss that included his restriction from working with her.

And let’s not forget what we find out about Jasper in this book, which was so much more than the first. Finding out his true surname left me in total SHOCK!

I’m not even sure I’ve recovered from this book lol– it’s SO GOOD.

If you haven’t yet started this series, this is your sign to start! And keep an eye out for the 3rd book in this series coming out in June.

Thanks to BookSirens for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.

This is book 2 of the series, and occurs after the death of Jasper Reid's adoptive father. He is struggling a bit, with the loss, and his role as Detective Inspector. For one, there is a Jane Doe who's murder remains unsolved, and he is forced to move on from it - but is unable to because her death reminds him too much of his own mother.

He has also tried to stay away from Leonora Spencer, especially considering their contentious relationship. But they are forced to be in each other's presence again when Leonora becomes a witness to a woman's sudden death at a notorious night club.

This story forces Leo and Jasper to confront much of both their past lives as aspects of the past are exposed in their present investigations into this woman's death. For one thing, the murdered woman is the new bride of one of the young sons of the family that runs a local organized crime group, whom Jasper has a long hidden relationship with.

More conflict between Leonora and Jasper ensues as he tries to investigate, and keep Leonora out of it especially as his higher ups are eyeing him and have given straight up orders to keep her out of things. But Leonora, with her eidetic memory, and ability to make connections, cannot help but be involved. But their conflict is layered with connections in the past and present and as they investigate this murder, both Reid and Spencer are haunted by their pasts as well, and there is a just a delicious layering of drama in their relationship as secrets become exposed leading to explosive drama in the end of the story...

Yes, this is a wonderful murder mystery that involves a crime family, layers of revenge, hidden identities, poisoning, industrial negligence and malfeasance.... But what I am really reading it for is the continuation of Leonora and Reid's deliciously fraught and convoluted stories and how their relationship develops - or devolves. Remember, Jasper is hiding several big secrets to his past, and Leonora has all her family history and trauma, that remains unsolved as well, and her past notoriety is brought to the forefront again in this story.

5 stars out of 5

Wonderful emotionally conflicted cliffhanger ending (and I am conflicted about that, because really I hate cliffhangers - but wow!)

Wow! My mind is blown by the ending. While I had guessed (correctly, for once) the secret about Jasper revealed at the end, I was not prepared for how that reveal went down.

Cara Devlin’s skill in developing a story arc over the course of a series is on full display in this second book of the Spencer and Reid Mysteries. The Carter family—a member of whom was connected to the mystery in the first book—is again connected to the mystery in this book. The mystery itself connects seemingly disparate events and people into a satisfying (and sad) conclusion. On the personal front, we feel Jasper’s past circling ever closer to blow up his present with several pieces of new information about his back story. And we see more emotional growth in Leo. She is still pushy and finds ways to insert herself into the investigation. But she becomes more aware of the consequences of her actions and seems less closed off as the book progresses until her emotions break through in a big way.

For the last few chapters—from the resolution and final showdown(s) of the book’s mystery to the personal showdown between Jasper and Leo at the end of the book—you will be holding your breath.

You definitely need to read the series in order due to all the connections from book to book. But Cara Devlin’s writing pulls you in and holds your interest in such a way that you can’t help but binge her books.

The second book in what is building into a stunning series. It’s one of those books that leaves you reeling & wanting to reach for the next book immediately. The characters are wonderful, I love the chemistry between Jasper & Leo & how their feelings are deepening even though they annoy each other. The pace is fast, there are twists & turns but it’s the ending which was an utter & total surprise. Brilliant

Holy smokes! My heart is still pounding from the exciting ending to this book!
This is the second book in the Spencer & Reid mysteries. Leo continues to defy traditional women’s roles by working as a morgue assistant for her uncle Claude. Jasper has lost his adoptive father, and the new police Commissioner is not happy that Jasper might have been promoted to Detective because of his last name, rather than his tenacity.
There is a Jane Doe who haunts Jasper as he tries to identify her, but a much more high profile crime has taken place- a young woman newly married to an east end mobster is poisoned in a dance club. Leo is helpful to the investigation, but her presence at so many crime scenes is detrimental to Jasper’s law enforcement career. And there continues to be Leo’s tragic family history hanging over their heads.
Set in 1884, the era, ambiance, and social customs are intricately developed. The next book in the series is coming in June of 2025. Thank goodness!

I received this ARC from the author at no charge, but all opinions are my own. As you can tell, my opinion is that this is another amazing series from the very talented Cara Devlin!

Historical Mystery

Victorian London 1884
Takes Place a few months after the end of book one

Leo and Jasper have carefully avoided each other for the past few months. Their paths cross unexpectedly when Leo witnesses the death of a woman while she and her close friend, Dita, are dancing at the notorious Strikers’ Wharf in Lambeth.

We learn more about Jasper’s past, and much of the foreshadowing from the first book is revealed. As a reader, I was surprised that the big reveal happened so early in the series, but I’m pleased. I’m glad the author didn’t drag out the apparent revelation hinted at in the previous story. Having a slow burn romance AND a painfully slow backstory reveal would’ve been too much for me to bear

So many backstories are lurking under the surface, just waiting to be revealed. I am so delighted that the next book in the series will be released in a matter of weeks. This book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but if you’re paying attention, it shouldn’t come as a surprise

It can be frustrating to read historical fiction featuring a female protagonist. However, it is satisfying to see a female character from the 19th century challenge the norms and constraints of her time.

The mystery at its core was well-crafted, and it was very satisfying to uncover its conclusion.

4 1/2 stars rounded up to five

Once again Cara Devlin had me invested in Leo and Jasper from the moment I started book 2. I’m on the fence in considering this a romance because while there are elements and I can maybe see where the story is goin it’s definitely very very slow burn if it ever happens.

The mystery itself was really well plotted and I had no inkling of what was going on until it was revealed!

I was completely unprepared for that cliffhanger at the end though and I am dying for book 3 to see where that part of the story goes!

‘I’m not entirely reckless.’

Oh my goodness, this one ended with a revelation I did not see coming! Up until that point things hadn’t changed much between Leo and Jasper since book one ended. A few weeks have passed, the DI that was a father figure to both of them has passed away and left their relationship in limbo. They’re not related, yet, they’re family of a sort. When Leo witnesses a high profile murder Jasper is resigned to the fact that even with his job on the line, she’s not going to give up until the murderer is found. Yet something more sinister lurks in the shadows, just waiting...their past. Wonderfully done!

Read this in a day and it was so good. The mystery is well paced and I love how Cara ties it all together and this was mixed with more depth to Jasper and Leo’s individual stories. There is a lot of lovely moments mixed with real reasons that keep these two with their own difficulties. I enjoyed that there is a consistent story that is running in the background and the little hints to their past that are occasionally dropped.

I NEED THE NEXT ONE ASAP (if the author read this: not like literally asap, but u know what I mean)

The firs book in the series was really good, but this one, ayayayyyy.
Such good slow burn, the mystery was top, the background with Leo's family is intriguing, in general all those elements work together perfectly.
Can't wait for the next book

⭐ARC REVIEW : review available on Amazon and Goodreads⭐

What a pleasure to receive this ARC as I instantly became a huge fan of Leo & Jasper when I read the first installment of the series. But there is a problem with this second book...

IT WAS SO GOOD that when I finished it, I couldn't form coherent words! I was UNABLE to write my ARC review because, you know, when a book leaves you all emotional and SPEECHLESS!?!

"Okay, no problems,"I told myself, "you can read it again in a few weeks and then write a review."

Can we all laugh at the fact that I read this book TWICE already and...here I am today, still speechless!

But the book is out today and I definitely need to write some sort of review so let me try....

We meet Leo again, still working at the morgue, and Jasper (my favorite 'scowling bear' who's like a blonder version of William Duke Wellington from Miss Scarlet) still working at Scotland Yard.

They both don't know how to deal with their relationship in the aftermath of Jasper's adoptive father (who also saved Leo as a kid when her family got killed). It is hard for me to talk about Leo and Jasper's without going fully "fangirl mode" : the chemistry in this book is *screaming-fangirl* AMAZING, with light touching, longing glances and developing feelings.

This is undeniably a slowburn but the most beautiful and satisfying of slowburn, as author Cara Devlin definitely knows you have to give "something" so fans stay interested.

As for the mystery, Leo witnesses a woman getting murdered in a nightclub and she is once again, involved into Jasper's investigation. The murder mystery is artfully connected to their complicated pasts, the hidden truths and lies between them adding up between layers of undeniable chemistry between these two.

That's about as much words as I'm able to coherently formed about the book "Method of Revenge". Now, brace yourself for the ending that had me SCREAMING!

I am now (im)patiently counting the days before the third book of the series, Courier of Death, comes out on June 14 (seventy-seven days. 77 days before it's out!).

✅Book Sirens Book Tour
@booksirens
@caradevlinbooks

My thoughts:
Cara Devlin’s Spencer & Reid series is starting to be one of my favorite series. I was so excited to read Method of Revenge. The first book was excellent as well as this book. I couldn’t put the book down once I started reading it.
I love the character of Lenora Spencer! She is one tough lady during a period of history where this was not how a woman was to behave. Known as Leo to her friends, she works with her Uncle in the morgue.
The mystery aspect is engaging as always. But, I am totally invested in what is going on between Leo and Jasper. So much mystery surrounds them!
The ending was a shocker for sure…..I need more!!!
Please tell me the next book is coming soon??????
All opinions expressed are my own.

I was so happy when I got this ARC on Book Sirens (thank you for that)... but little did I know that on the next day I would be so sad that it was already over and anxiously waiting for the next book to come out in june.

I read the first book because someone recommended at my Miss Scarlet and the Duke group saying it had everything we loved about the show. I was skeptical at the begining, but i'm glad that I was totally wrong. This book series is everything that Miss Scarlet and the Duke could have been if the writer really cared about all of her characters, and for that I'd like to thank Cara Devlin, because this book somehow made my heart a little less broken over how the show handled my favorite characters.

I love how the characters are written here, how layered they are, how Cara's writing is fluid but manages to contemplate all the historical details. And I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the slow burn. All that angst on the last chapter was chef's kiss devastating, like I couldn't even breathe properly.
I literally can't wait for the next book to come out, because I don't know what to do with myself after finishing this one. I can't stop thinking about Leo and Jasper and what's next for them!

Other things that I'd like to point out that made me love this book:

- The mistery and how it all unfolded was intriguing, but the first time Scheele's green was mentioned, Erin Brockovic just popped into my head.

- When detective Lewis said to Jasper: "She's smart, your Miss Spencer." YOUR MISS SPENCER!!!!!! I screamed so much when I read this!!!!

- Also when Leo went to Jasper's house and Mrs. Zhao was tending to his wounds and I was sure that Cara would give me something that I wanted since book 1: Leo stitching Jasper up after some really bad injury. But hopefully we might still have a scene like this one on the next books. It would make me really happy!

- How Jasper always gives up fighting because he knows that Leo will do her bidding and he will follow her lead anyway because he knows she is right.

- We had a lot of shirtless Jasper on this one and Leo blushing after seeing him, but OMG I surely wasn't expecting that tidbit about Jasper sleeping naked... I might've even blushed.

- We finally learned more about Jasper and Leo's past and even if it was heatbreaking, I'm glad they both had someone like DI Reid in their lives. Also I like Jasper Reid much more than any other name, it suits him.

Thank you so much for this book (and this series) Mrs. Devlin! I need to read your other books ASAP.

What a fabulous cover!

The story carries on just a couple months after the first book in the series.

We see Jasper’s increasing dissatisfaction with Constance, his dawning awareness of his feelings for Leo and how he struggles with this knowledge nd its implications. There are several small indications which each of them recognize as something ‘more’ than their usual interaction. I love seeing these!

We found out some interesting information about Jasper’s family and his mother. I wonder what this will mean for the future.

I loved the exciting climactic scene which shows Leo and Jasper working together again, just as they have throughout the book. It was ‘edge of my seat’ exciting.

There’s still the mystery of why Flora (Leo’s aunt) blames Leo for causing the deaths of her parents and siblings, Jacob and Agnes. Devlin doles out bits and pieces of info here and the puzzle is oh-so-slowly getting pieced together. I wonder if it will be amazing or appalling when all is revealed.

The revelation at the end of the book was absolutely shocking to me. I never suspected it. Yet another surprising plot twist which will leave you stunned.

This was a really excellent book. I enjoyed the first book in the series but this one had me hooked all the way through. The small gestures of growing affection, the dawning awareness of each other, the revelations about both of their families, and the solving of the mystery were all expertly woven together into an engrossing tale.

Dear readers, hang on to your seats and be prepared to read this book in one sitting. It will grab you and make you want to know what happens on the next page.

Method of Revenge begins a few weeks after the events in Shadow at the Morgue, the first in the series. I will start off by saying that to truly enjoy Method of Revenge, you should read the first book before beginning this one. The two flow beautifully together and the characters' back stories are important.

Leo and her friend go to a club where Leo winesses the death of a young woman. It is determined that the woman was poisoned and Leo jumps in to help investigate. Detective Inspector Jasper Reid once again tries to dissuade her, but she is an independent and stubborn woman. Jasper is also preoccupied with a case he hasn't been able to solve, the death of a young woman.

Cara Devlin has created two wonderful characters. I loved the romantic tension she has created between Leo and Jasper. I could not put this book down, but then I got to the end, and OH MY!!, there were no more pages!!! WHAT A CLIFFHANGER!! I can't wait for the next book in the series, Courier of Death, due out in June.

Reading the story is like watching a movie with ominous music in the background. A sense of imminent danger permeates the book. There's no stopping Leonora Spencer (Leo) when she's on a case, whether it's putting herself in danger to search for clues, or facing the antagonism of Scotland Yard constables who tell her she has no right to do anything at all. Her work assisting her uncle, who is the coroner in a deadhouse in London, is not only unusual, it's forbidden for women. She does it secretly, as well as writing up reports. Her photographic memory is often the reason murderers are caught and cases solved, as she goes against the wishes of Inspector Jasper Reid and Scotland Yard to help him.

There's so much action it's hard to breathe sometimes. Holy moly! Jasper's awful secret is revealed in this second book of the series. It isn't a cliffhanger, but it does make Book 3 a must read. We have yet to learn why her entire family was murdered when she was a child. Cara Devlin is a phenomenal writer.

Amazing as ever!

Cara Devlin is an amazing author, and so far the Spencer & Reid series is surpassing the Bow Street. And this book. WOW. Her writing make the characters come alive so that the reader becomes engulfed the their world. I’m sitting here after finishing the last page feeling the emotional turmoil Leo must have. And since I’ve been almost expecting this since about halfway through book one, that says something. All I can say is that I hope Leo forgives soon. And poor Jasper, I adore Jasper, he’s trying so hard and just can’t get a break. I’m really hoping Ms Devlin can speed write because I’m not sure my heart or sanity can wait long for book 3! I don’t give a 5 star rating often (I save it for the REALLY good, blow me away books) but this has earned it and then some.

I absolutely loved this book! This series is sooo good! I enjoyed the first book immensely and couldn’t wait for the second book. It keeps the momentum up brilliantly, the case was good and well written and I like the backstory of Leo and jasper interwoven. The slow burn is exquisite and the building of it in this book is done so well. I kind of had an inkling in the first book of some things and the ending confirmed and did not disappoint at all and was the best cliffhanger because it was frustrating as I literally want to read the next book immediately!! I just cannot wait, basically give me multiple of these books in the series all at once and all the spoilers as I WANT to know what happens. Cannot wait for the third book. I will be preordering as soon as it becomes available!

I wish there were more than 5 stars to give this book. The pacing of this dectective mystery was a masterpiece. The way the pieces slowly unraveled to fit perfectly together. Even if you suspect the truth, the tension in the way the last chapter of this book unfolds was just perfection.

After being introduced to Jasper and Leo in the last book, this book starts to explore their relationship and tenative chemistry more as they seek to solve a murder. The plot features a sad story of loss and explores the many kinds of grief we can experience. If you enjoy a good historical mystery or a slow burn romance with plenty of angst you must read this book.
