as underwhelming as it may have been, i feel content with this end.
i’m glad that nobara, yuji, and megumi get to live on together and have a second chance after all they’ve been through, it was nice to see them go on one last mission. and i’m glad gojo didn’t make a comeback, as much as everyone seemed to want that i don’t think it would have made sense, his goal of creating strong allies was achieved, his students surpassed him just like he wanted and he seems at peace in death. i would have liked for characters like him that played an important role in the story to have some kind of burial though, it’s upsetting that only tsumiki seemed to get one.

now i wait for everything to be animated…

I just… sigh. I’m so sad it’s over, and it’s still one of my favorite mangas, but like… what the fuck was that?
Lackluster ending for a manga that took me on such an emotional rollercoaster. Disappointing.

Okay, was it the best manga I’ve ever read in my life? Well, no. But did I still have fun, even if I was confused about the whole magic/curse system? Yes.

(The fact that Yuta, Maki, and Utahime are alive also makes me extremely happy.)

the immediate anger has cooled, the disappointment still lingers because I do wish the themes of the series had more time to develop and the characters were explored more, but Gege Akutami put his heart and soul into writing Ryomen Sukuna and it shows.

still, I desperately wanted a better ending for Gojo Satoru who was seen as a tool until the bitter end.

but he did manage to cultivate the younger generation in Yuuji and Megumi and Nobara, and everyone else, and even if we did not get a proper mourning for him, his memory will never be forgotten. his hopes and dreams are being carried on.

Yuuji will remember him, always.

the trio are alive and well, and I can learn to be satisfied in all the themes that are still present in this ending even if i was hoping for so much more.

in the aftermath of his defeat, the not quite curse, not quite human chooses to go north—a different path.

oh, Itadori Yuuji the man that you are.

honestly, not exactly the ending I expected but not an ending I’m mad about either. I wish we had MORE though. It feels like the ending was very rushed and I have lots of questions that are currently unanswered.

Jujutsu Kaisen means so much to me and these characters specifically will stick with me for so long.

all the tears that would’ve been shed have already been shed bc of spoilers.

ok, so here’s what i have to say about Jujutsu Kaisen.

i don’t typically put manga into goodreads, but i’m making an exception here because i simply have too many thoughts. i’ll preface this by saying that early Jujutsu Kaisen, until around the culling games arc, was so good. it was one of my favorite mangas of all time. but for some reason—i don’t know if it’s because Gege Akutami was tired of their characters or because they wrote themself into a corner or what—the story’s decline in terms of plot after that was staggering and extremely rapid.

frankly, the way Jujutsu Kaisen ended feels a bit like a betrayal. now, obviously this is an exaggeration because the author doesn’t really owe anything to their readers. but i do actually think that there is a certain level of trust we as readers give to an author, especially if we believe in their writing.

Gege Akutami proved themself worthy of such trust at the beginning and then brutally sells the pass.

i’m being harsh partly because i know they can write. they’ve shown us that they can write. and i can’t fathom why their story veered the way it did. it’s mostly the lack of explanation in the way things unfold (and the fact that when we are given explanation, it’s dismissive), the revolving door of characters that are killed off simply because their deaths are guaranteed to elicit an emotional response from the fanbase, and the obvious inclusion of plot points solely because Gege knows these plot points will deflect from the fact that the story is falling apart that deeply irk me.

what makes me the angriest has to do with my final point in the list above. i think what Gege Akutami did with Nobara as a character was abhorrent. to kill her off is one thing (i don’t like it, but i’m not going to necessarily call it bad writing), but to forget about her and barely mention her for almost the entire rest of the manga, and then to randomly bring her back five chapters before the end (with, i might add, no feasible explanation as to how) is another. i love her so much and always saw her as wasted potential. but in my opinion, Gege Akutami knew her return was going to get them brownie points and that some fans had been awaiting it for a while (i was one of them up to a certain point), and did it to distract those fans from the fact that it makes no fucking sense at all. also, and far be it from me to presume this but i genuinely believe it, they had to have been trying to beat the misogynist allegations. there’s no way they’d pull something this stupid otherwise. though, then again, i’ve been wrong about them before.

okay, fine. while we’re at it, let’s talk about Gojo’s death. i’m aware that Gege doesn’t like him as a character. i don’t care. frankly, it doesn’t matter. the way his story ended was abrupt, poorly done, and doesn’t make any sense. Gojo is a well-written character, particularly when it comes to the loneliness that accompanies being the strongest. he’s not just the gimmicky trope of the absolutely cracked, godlike character that we see pretty often in anime. i think this makes the fact that his entire death chapter (LITERALLY ONE CHAPTER) is spent talking about his battle with Sukuna a mischaracterization. i understand, to some extent, that it’s a part of his character to crave a good battle like that. but um… what about literally all of his other motivations? his students? this chapter in general is really poor writing, and it’s not just because they killed off what was one of the most widely and universally beloved characters of all time. it’s because his death (especially retrospectively, given that nearly every other character afterwards—who are all established to be weaker than him—is able to dodge the attack that killed him) doesn’t serve the story at all, and is so jarring that the only explanation has to do with shock value. to pull off a death like this, you had to have known you were going to do it. you have to plan it. it’s very obvious that Gege didn’t.

i’ll talk about Sukuna too, since we’ve already opened that can of worms. i see what Gege was trying to do. people often say that the reason we don’t like Jujutsu Kaisen’s ending (they say this of Attack on Titan, too, which makes it worse) is because we’re so used to the happy endings where the main characters always defeat the villain and no one of importance dies. i cannot emphasize this enough. NO. this is NOT why. i can understand the impulse of wanting to do something different, and i can understand wanting to make your villain ridiculously powerful—it makes them more frightening. but doing it just for the sake of doing it, especially when you have to make excuses and alter your magic system in ways that don’t make any sense in order to do it, is just lazy. a deus ex machina for your villain is still a deus ex machina. Sukuna is given so much random advantage that it becomes frustrating to read him killing character after character, not because it’s frustrating to see the heroes lose, but because it’s frustrating to read a plot that has devolved into the mangaka willingly opening plot holes just to erase his main cast and paint the villain as the strongest in the series. especially when it feels like they’re doing it to spite the readers.

speaking of the magic system, there’s a reason why people find it so difficult to understand, and it’s not because we’re all stupid. it’s because Gege keeps adding to it before fleshing out what they already have. what matters is the depth of the system, not the width of its abilities. i shouldn’t have to say this, but the way your battles unfold and how much sense they make literally depend on how well your readers understand your magic system, and i wish Gege understood that. every time they try to overexplain how the magic of Jujutsu Kaisen works, we put a little trust in them because wow it sounds like they really know what they’re talking about. but the system just does not hold up—like, at all—in its simplest possible terms.

finally, you can’t keep writing fight scenes that are the exact same formulaically and calling it good writing. generally, this is not the point of fiction. the battles against Sukuna became so repetitive and annoyingly dull that it seems Gege was not giving us anything at all. why would i even begin to root for/care about the characters—on either side—if i know the outcome already? where are the stakes?

i don’t think Gege Akutami had any idea what to do with this manga or its characters. i will give them this: they’re really good at distracting people from their bad writing by adding cool fight scenes. it’s honestly simultaneously impressive and concerning how well they’re able to do this.

in the end, i’m giving it 1 star because it was painful to witness, in real time, a mangaka taking what was a series with stunning potential (and one of my favorite mangas of all time), beating it to death with a bat, and publishing it. kind of sad, honestly. but at least we’re done with it. at least i can put it down now.

(Edit 05.12.24: Just wanted to say the fact that this is coming out on Christmas Eve where I live...I feel sick.)

😭I HAVE😭LOVE😭AND😭DREAMS😭TOO😭

(Edit 30.09.24: Some people are saying this is a mistranslation, but it seems more like an alternate one to me?? The place I usually read it has it as “I’m expecting great things from you” so I really don’t know. I should’ve known Gege would never humanise him 😒)

Okay, so actual review time. I haven’t written a long one in a while, and I’m very much not normal about this series, so be understanding if I lose my mind halfway through.

For a series that is so anchored in humanising characters, the ending of Jujustu Kaisen does the exact opposite. And it’s legitimately such a disservice to (spoiler) as a character that it’s unbelievable.

I can’t count the number of plot-points just abandoned by the author in favour of this tasteless, uncharacteristic ending that is a far cry from what I’m sure most people anticipated and wanted.

And yes, I understand how it’s difficult to end something as huge as Jujutsu Kaisen, and yes, I know the author has had health problems, and also didn’t want to extend the manga beyond JJK0 in the first place. But that doesn’t make the ending free of criticism. And I will criticize it GLADLY.

It’s not even bad in the way that I’m like…enraged. It’s just so, so disappointing. It’s repetitive and it’s gimmicky. And I’ll be honest, as happy as I am that some characters returned, it seems like pure fan-service to me. When I go back to the characters’ original ends, their returns feel UNPLANNED, and it just feels tacky.

The ending is neither artistically tragic, nor entirely happy. It’s just really…meh.

As far as the whole cycle thing, sure, yeah. That’s cool, or whatever. I see the vision there. But trying to pretend that Jujutsu Society is magically fixed is BULL, and I won’t pretend it’s not. They literally still have children doing their bidding, but whatever Gege says goes, I guess.

It’s so unsatisfactory as an ending to Gojo’s past arc as well, entirely disregarding a lot of the important points in his relationship with Geto and Shoko and Nanami for NO REASON. I guess it wasn’t deemed crucial enough?? But I find it hard to believe Gege doesn’t know how much of the fandom is locked-in on that 2006-2007 time-period.

The main trio…yeah, that sucks lmao. Sorry. It just doesn’t feel like a genuine ending at all.

And the way everybody just forgets about (spoiler)?? Even though they literally show him in the last chapter talking about how they will? Even though the whole point of his story is that he’s more than just a weapon?? Gege I’m watching you.

All in all, Jujutsu Kaisen as a series is GAS and I’ll recommend it to everybody, but read the ending at your own risk.

Generally just a huge, ginormous let-down.

(Edit 19.9.25: It’s been like a year since JJK ended now and while Mojuro is going on it’s just a giant Yuta glaze party so I doubt it will help my feelings about the ending whatsoever. And we all know I hate him. The only interesting part I’ve seen so far is that Jujutsu Society has allegedly gotten better. Just annoying we have to see that 70 years down the line and with characters who I don’t really care about.

Also IF ONE MORE PERSON CALLS MEGUMI POTENTIAL MAN I’LL FUCKING CRASH OUT. HIS DEPRESSION IS SO OBVIOUS TO ME AND THE JJK UNIVERSE’S JAPAN SHOULD FEEL LUCKY HE DIDN’T GO FULL GETO)

The journey was worth every page.

It's always difficult to put into words how much a series means to me, especially one so beloved, but I'll do my best anyways. It would feel wrong to start anywhere else but with Gege's art style, one that perfectly captures the emotional weight of every scene, raw in a way I can't fully describe—a style that heightens the intense action as well as the subtler, more somber moments. Just incredible visual storytelling, such a vital part of how this series conveys its heart.

And speaking of heart, for me, the true beauty of Jujutsu Kaisen lies in its characters. Am I emotionally attached to the cast? Maybe a little. Okay, fine, I definitely am. But there's something about the way they're written and developed that makes it so easy to connect with each of them on a personal level. I could go on and on about each of the characters, about what makes me love or hate them, about their dynamics, their sense of camaraderie that doesn't feel forced in the slightest. The best part, by far, is how they evolve throughout the series. They aren’t static or one-dimensional; they learn, grow, and adapt in ways that feel earned, even those that initially seem like secondary characters, who often ended up leaving the biggest emotional impacts. And, while I can certainly understand the feelings of being underwhelmed (particularly with the epilogue), I think it helps that I read this last big arc in one go. The emotional moments hit, and it was quite the journey—one I wouldn't trade. It wasn't perfect, as nothing rarely is, but it's still everything to me. I love these characters with my whole heart; it made me laugh, it made me cry (sob, actually), it made me feel so deeply, and it made me really think, which is all I can ever really ask for when interacting with art. Of course, I would have loved to see this story and its themes expanded even further, but, I know, because I love it so much, I'd always want more from this world and these characters anyways. So, as a series, this is undoubtedly one of my favorites, and for that, I will ALWAYS cherish it.

To be honest, this ending feels extremely underwhelming and rushed. But I think it's definitely a result of the immense pressure of making a weekly Shonen Jump manga which had an adverse effect on Gege Akutami's health and wellbeing. He literally had his appendix taken out and only took a 3 week break from the manga.

It does really sadden me to see amazing stories not fully meet their full potential because of the unfair pressure the manga industry puts on mangakas. So despite the ending being a bit disappointing I really don't want to see anyone blaming Gege Akutami for this because I think he did an incredible job given the circumstances.

It would have been better if the plot slowed down a bit and properly explored the emotions of the characters. But all in all, I am happy at least that a lot of my favourite characters survived and the ending has a generally hopeful tone.

Despite everything, this manga will always be extremely special to me and close to my heart. It was an incredible ride with the highest highs and the lowest lows and the biggest shocks of my life. These characters are so, so beloved to me. It was a great experience reading Jujutsu Kaisen weekly and I can't wait to see it all animated.

If Gege Akutami makes a new manga, I would be very excited to read it. But I really hope he can take a break and look after his health first.

Finally this torture is over- this ending broke me in a million pieces and stuck 10 pieces together as a “sorry” while leaving the rest scattered 😍😍

Do not read this if you want to stay happy

SPOILER VOLUME 26:
I am so so so sad and mad that people weren’t crying and rolling on the floor after Gojo his death, only Yuta and Yuji acknowledged his death and that makes me want to jump of a cliff- like they should have at least put a scene in the end to show us how much everyone loved Gojo but no😔 if I ever go to therapy it’s going to be bc of THIS

I found this ending a bit dissatisfying. I almost think leaving off a few chapters earlier would have been better. (Although I think the ending volumes will translate very well into anime, even if I wasn't a huge fan of the ending as a manga.)

I’ll never understand how a mangaka who started with such strong ideas about every character’s fights and techniques (even if some people say he took too much ‘inspiration’ from Bleach) could end the story with such a letdown.
This seems to be a common issue with many big shounen manga writers: they begin with grand ideas but have no clear way to execute the ending. It feels like he lost his way and just wanted to wrap it up abruptly.
I liked Yuji’s monologue with Sukuna, it suited his character perfectly. However, there are so many unanswered questions and so much wasted potential.

I’m disappointed.

i do get where the hate for the ending is coming from, but reading the entire manga in one go really made it satisfying. like sure there are many questions that are still unanswered but they weren’t questions gege planned on answering in the first place. i feel like the last fight did get kinda convoluted and just person after person where it was a bit confusing but it was to show sakunas strength yk (plus i feel like the fight will be more cohesive when it’s animated). i don’t think gege will write a sequel tbh like yes the last panel is "ambiguous" but he literally states that if he could he would do everything differently so i doubt he’ll reincarnate

i do wish the hikari uraume fight was actually shown tho cuz why hype up how cool he is, show me how sick his domain is and follow that up by not showing the actual fight (j hope the anime fixes this)

also i don’t think the ending was that rushed?? idk ill have to think abt it more but how long can you fight one guy yk like sure the last three chaps where everything is fine and you get lore drops are silly but when you get them cohesively with the story (instead of weekly/biweekly depending on breaks) it does fit into the story and doesn’t seem so out of place

maybe im biased because j wanted a happy ending but i did like the end. and again yes the panels of everyone smiling is silly but they all like faced death countless times and watched their best friends die so like god forbid they find joy at the end of all that

also i really liked yujis domain it was silly but so in character for him, i love the emphasis on the different types of domains people can’t have because sure hits are cool but when everyone has one it’s like alright man i get it

ok yall. i get it you are upset gojo didn't come back but lets BFFR. jjk was fucking amazing and the ending was good. rushed? yes. some questionable decisions? oh ofc. but what ending is without that. this has been such a fun ride and reading this final battle has been exciting. all of the twists and turns. sometimes its ok to have a happy ending as well. i think the fact that the ending isn't what some people wanted are clouding minds and judgments. this ending was a great wrap up for many and a great beginning for so many others.

the sukuna finale was great and that flashback/memory walk with sukuna and yuji is one of the best chapters in the entire series. seeing how much that flashback impacted sukuna as well? he really took what yuji was showing and telling him to heart because he picked north. he wants a new life where he doesn't have to go down the path he did. i think it ending with sukuna's finger is the perfect way to do it - ending where we all started. but something is different. the finger is no longer wrapped up and in hiding. it is out in the open. it is mirroring sukunas own change and how he is no longer this feared curse. there is no more reason to fear sukuna. no more reason to fear curses. gojo really left the jujutsu world in the hands of the future.

the fact that the last person to talk is fucking mahtio??? like... AND WE SEE SUKUNA AND REGRET AND YOUNG URAUME. sukuna and uraume's relationship is everything and is just ... ugh. i cant get over it. seeing it mirrored against mahito who is truly just a curse. he isn't going to be able to understand why sukuna took the actions and path he did just like he never understood yuji. just a fucking brat who is going to be stuck in limbo forever. it is everything i would have wanted from an ending. this is it. this is the ending. the trio is back, YUTA IS BACK, TODO THE GOAT IS ALIVE and they all get to do their own things now.

gojo - your dream really will continue on in the people who will remember and live it out everyday. i understand your confidence in yuji and accepted his fate because he knows everything will be ok. thank you gege for such as amazing series with such highs and amazing internet experiences. i will never forget you or your work as long as i live.

also! i think yuji has to be the cover for this one. i don't see it any other way.

update: i knew it. it was yuji.

what to say about jjk

for the culture, what a movement it really took the whole world by storm and I think by that the expectations were really high

Of the whole cast there’s really only a handful of them that a more than halfway fleshed out by the end which is disappointing because the potential of so many were not met

Plotwise, there’s some major lulls felt tenfold by the weekly release involving entirely unnecessary characters, which begs to question was that last quarter really thought out?

It’s ironic that jjk at its best to me is within the prequel volume and it from then it it never reached that level again to me

Great and fun ideas, it all just went out in blip by the end
