“Megan, you need to call me. Wallace was here. He left a message to say please don’t worry. He’s coming for you soon.” As I hang up the call, my blood runs cold. I’ve spent a lifetime running from this man. But as I look down at his next victim, their face frozen in one final moment of fear, I can’t escape the feeling that I will be next to die.
When the body of Detective Susan Dupont is discovered lying across the dividing line of two counties, Detective Megan Carpenter is immediately called to the scene. When her body is examined they find a sharp piece of metal has been lodged in her eye. A detail that takes Megan back to a deeply-buried memory which she has long been running from.
Twenty-four hours later, retired Detective Riley Denton is found dead at home. His death is deemed a tragic accident. He fell down the stairs and had no enemies. Why would anyone want him dead? But Megan feels sure there is a link to the deaths and there is only one person she can trust with her theory.
Calling in the help of her partner Detective Ronnie Marsh, they start to piece together a link that places Megan right at the centre of a deadly plot. As they race to find the killer before they strike closer to home, a string of murder victims going back years starts to emerge. And when Megan discovers how the murders are linked, she has to finally accept a dark truth she has spent her life running from.
A killer from her past is back just like they promised and they will stop at nothing to take everything she loves. Can Megan stop them dead in their tracks or will she pay the ultimate price?

I read all of the books in this series in order. Spent 6 books growing attachments to these characters and this is how we’re ending it? So many loose ends. This better not be the last book. It’s giving game of thrones final season energy and I am not here for it. Do not waste my time Gregg give Megan the happy ending she deserves.
Is a serial killer on the loose? That's a question detective Megan Carpenter, with help from her partner detective Ronnie Marsh, must answer - and time, of course, is of the essence. And as the investigation continues, it looks more and more like Megan herself is in the killer's sights.
Being a target is certainly not new to Megan; in fact, she's been running from one awful situation to another most of her life. So far, she's made it out alive, although most of the time because she's taken matters into her own hands. Now, though, she's on the side of the law - a person who's trying her best to take down people like the one she used to be.
Her very troubled and background formed the beginning of this series - this is the sixth - and she continues to "find herself" amid memories of a horrific and violent past (to that end, she is not a particularly lovable character, but she's making progress). She's got a solid place to live, a main squeeze she thinks she'll marry, a great job and - gasp! - a handful of real friends.
As she deals with the fallout from the particularly gruesome murder of a police detective followed closely by the murder of another in similar fashion, she's also dealing with memories of her own past. It doesn't help that she's getting messages from someone who seems to know all about her and everyone close to her - someone who readers get a glimpse of by way of chapters from his perspective. As her investigation progresses and the body count grows, more ties to Megan's past turn up - as does the heat on the messages from that unknown person known only as "Wallace."
Needless to say, it's not long before Megan begins to suspect that her murder investigation and may be connected somehow to her past life, and finding the killer has the potential to change the course of her life once again. The details, of course, I'll leave to other readers to discover. As for me, I'll just thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me to read another exciting installment by way of a pre-release copy.
The prologue was intriguing, but the first chapter overwhelmed me with too much backstory too quickly. I struggled to connect with Megan and found myself disengaged from the narrative.
Frequent references to past cases, friends, and murders felt irrelevant and distracting, almost like intrusive advertisements for previous books. Instead of adding depth, they disrupted the flow of the current plot.
I had difficulty connecting with any of the characters, including the protagonist—a police detective with a complex history involving a past murder, a new identity, and a stalker. While her background is certainly intriguing, I didn't feel invested in her story.
The narrative improved as the story progressed and the focus shifted away from excessive backstory. However, repetitive reminders about established relationships, such as the frequent reiterations of the protagonist's rocky reunion with her brother Hayden and details about her boyfriend Dan, continued to feel clunky and unnecessary.
Too complex, bites off more than it can chew. Also, Caleb = Wallace is obvious the minute he's introduced. And why not have a happy ending for once? Megan's found a good guy, has good friends, is good at what she does. I'm sure a way could be found for her life to get better. Then the series could continue, in a different way.
Thank you Bookouture for this arc provided by NetGalley
Final Victim by Gregg Olsen Genre: Mystery, thriller Expected publication date: 22nd January 2025
A gripping page turner that follows Megan, who now works as a cop solving crimes whilst trying to escape her past life and a stalker from the past.. This was a fast paced novel with short chapters. Even though there were parts that I guessed, it didn't take away from how much I loved the ending! This certainly won't be my last read for this author!
“First, policemen started being arrested for murders, and now policemen were increasingly being murdered.”
Detective Megan Carpenter is no stranger to murder, both personally and professionally. Mostly working alone as her partner Ronnie is home with family after their last difficult case. Investigating the case of a murdered detective, Susan Dupont, is disconcerting to Megan. Furthermore, as gruesome as the murder was, the fact that Dupont’s body had been strategically laid across the dividing line of two counties is utterly shocking to Megan and her team.
Even within twenty-four hours, another detective’s body is discovered. While it appears to be an unfortunate accident, Megan is certain that there’s a connection between the deaths of both detectives. Despite her deep involvement in the investigation, Megan has a personal matter that demands her immediate attention. Not only is Morgan being stalked by a man named Wallace, but a revelation about Megan’s past could shock even her partner, Ronnie.
When Ronnie joins Megan on the case, she realizes she must navigate the delicate balance between her professional and personal life, especially as that line starts to blur rapidly. Despite Ronnie’s assistance and her unwavering loyalty to Megan, her inner demons begin to resurface. I thoroughly enjoyed the constant struggle between good and evil.
This book by Gregg Olsen is a thrilling and fast-paced read that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s a brilliant book that made me uncomfortable more than once, which is a testament to excellent writing, an intriguing plot and likable characters.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I love the Det Megan Carpenter series. This one was probably my least favorite of the 6 books, but still a twisty read as always. It seemed like this book was rushed and had somewhat obvious plot holes. We’ve been wondering when Megan’s past is finally going to catch up to her, but not knowing who the sinister Wallace character truly is. It ended up being a little obvious, I thought, but I don’t want to put any spoilers out there. Everything worked out too easily, but I guess the ending is left open for a new twist in Megan’s life and another book. Thanks to Bookouture and Net Galley for the ARC of Final Victim by Gregg Olsen for my honest and independent review.
First of all, thank you NetGalley for providing me with an opportunity to read a complementary ARC copy of Final Victim in exchange for my honest review and feedback. Also thank you Bookouture for approving my request.
Final Victim is an enthralling, fast paced crime thriller that will reel you in from the first chapter and keep you hooked until the last page. I honestly couldn’t put this book down because each chapter had a gradual build up and would literally leave me breathless. A crescendo of suspense made it difficult to find a good place to break away for a bit. I couldn’t resist seeing how each chapter/ storyline played out. I also wanted to find out more about each character.
Each character in the book had depth and personality, and I enjoyed getting to know them. The main character, Megan, is very independent, strong willed yet also guarded. She has a past of secrets, traumas and struggles that she has worked hard to ensure stay hidden from even those closest to her. Although she isn’t forthcoming with her history, she truly cares and attempts to look out for her small circle of friends. Two people are and will always be in her corner: Ronnie who has all the qualities anyone would want in a best friend and work partner, and Dan who is a caring and compassionate boyfriend that supports Megan in all her endeavors. As the book progresses you become more invested in the people in Megan’s life.
The Prologue comes from a man named Wallace’s perspective. He is a mysterious serial killer that haunts the main character, Megan’s, thoughts. He ensures she can not undo the ties that bind her to her past, and he does everything in his power to keep her from feeling safe. Occasionally throughout the book you see things play out from his perspective. Mainly we are seeing events unfold from Megan’s point of view as a detective who is covering or has covered multiple cases with the commonality of cops or detectives who have been brutally murdered. Wallace is obviously captivated by Megan and all the murders seem to have a link to him. He keeps himself two steps ahead of Megan and her colleagues. You spend the majority of the book trying to find the connection between the two and find out his intentions.
I didn’t realize going into this book it was #6 in a series. The author did a great job explaining details that referenced the other books in the series so that I didn’t have to read past books to understand and enjoy this one. Overall I give this a rating of 4 stars. There was some predictability throughout the book, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to know more. I am not a book series kind of girl, but I am now wanting to go back to read the beginning of Detective Megan’s story and would love to see future additions to this series as well.
Final Victim will be released January 22, 2025, and I highly recommend this book. It was my first book from Gregg Olsen, but definitely not my last.
This was so good!!! A creepy and disturbing novel but with a very likeable and capable police team! The plot remained scary even though I did guess a few things! The conclusion was a clever and intriguing end! I loved it all! This was my first novel by Gregg Olsen, and won't be the last! An immersive page-turner! I received a digital copy of this novel from NetGalley and I have voluntarily written an honest review.
This is a good psychological thriller with quite a few twists and turns. A great plot with interesting characters. This book is part of a series but could easily be read as a stand alone. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me an advance copy of Final Victim to read.
Even though Final Victim is book number six in the Detective Megan Carpenter's series, I was able to follow the plot without reading the 5 previous books in the series.
Final Victim centers around Detective Carpenter being asked to help find the suspect behind the latest murder of a detective. The suspect appears to be a copycat killer who mimics a style Detective Carpenter is all too familiar with. With the help of a childhood friend, Detective Carpenter begins a cat and mouse chase to try to solve the crime. Is she the cat or is she the mouse??
While reading, I hope you take a liking to Nan. Her hard work and dedication found several vital pieces that helped solve the mystery behind the murders.
I love suspense with a twist and this book did not fall short on delivering just that!
Final Victim, by Gregg Olsen, is the sixth and latest addition to his terrific Megan Carpenter series! This is a dark psychological thriller and, as usual, Olsen delivers a compelling, exciting story! Megan is a sheriff’s detective in Port Townsend, Oregon. She carries with her terrible memories of trauma from her childhood, and now she is laser-focused on bringing to justice predators and killers. This episode finds her forced to remember and deal with feelings about her serial killer father and her unreliable mother as a new serial killer shows up in her jurisdiction, possibly being Wallace, a stalker who has menaced her in the past. I find Olsen’s writing and the complexity of his plotting perfectly suited to this dark subject matter. There is plenty of action and suspense as the story unfolds, with gruesome discoveries and much angst for the detectives who have to stop the killer. Megan is edgy, sardonic, and comes across as world-weary, yet her character has just the right notes of commitment, introspection, and sensitivity in her quest for redemption from her past actions. This is a gritty, sometimes graphic, police procedural that can be read as a stand-alone, but I recommend seeking out the earlier entries in the series for a richer experience and understanding of the nature and history of Detective Megan Carpenter!
Thank you to the author, Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my honest review.
I just couldn't get into this book. It seemed all over the place with a lot of characters and just didn't read smoothly for me. I kept realizing that I was having to read the same paragraph again and again because it just wasn't holding my attention. Finally gave up and didn't finish.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Final Victim by Gregg Olsen offers a thrilling and suspenseful crime novel. With themes of dark secrets, trauma, and redemption, along with a strong and relentless female detective, Final Victim is a must-read for those who enjoy a fast-paced and gripping story.
Final Victim is the sixth book in the Detective Megan Carpenter series. When I picked it up, I didn't realize it part of a series, let alone the sixth installment. However, I'm happy to report that it works well a stand-alone novel. The author provides sufficient backstory making it easy for new readers to follow along. Also giving one the compulsion to go and read the previous books
The protagonist, Detective Megan Carpenter lives a life associated with murder. At the start of Final Victim readers see her working 0n her own. Her partner has taken personal time to spend with family. Despite the previous case taking a toll, Megan dedicates herself to working and taking down murderers. So, the murder of a fellow detective in a brutal fashion, sees her making it her mission to stop the killer. Megan thought she would work the case on her own. However, as parts of the victim's body were found in two different jurisdictions, working on her own was not an option. Throughout the course of the investigation, they discovered the death of another detective. A death which initially ruled as an accident was in fact murder. Further investigations revealed that both murders were connected.
Combined with this new case, Megan is facing a personal challenge of her own. A challenge which involves a stalker and if not dealt with will derail the life she has built has Megan Carpenter. She can't risk the secret about her past coming to light. This led to her struggles with navigating the lines between her professional and personal life. A situation which worsens with her working with new people and the return of her partner. The fear of revelation of her past life intensified when the connection between her stalker and the murders came to light.
The stalker's POV added an extra layer of suspense to the story. From his perspective readers see his morbid fascination with Megan. He goes out his way to ensure she's always looking over her shoulder with his chilling messages and his attacks on the people close to her. Throughout the story the reader faces the challenge of identifying not only the connection between the stalker and the murders but also his connection to Megan. Uncovering the truth proved an exciting and thrilling experience.
If you enjoy well-crafted police procedurals, then consider adding Detective Megan Carter series to your reading list.
Gregg Olsen’s Final Victim marks a tense and emotionally charged conclusion to the excellent Megan Carpenter series – or at least, it seems to. For years, Megan has been striving to bury her horrific past and build a normal-ish life. But in this sixth instalment, that fragile peace is shattered as Wallace, a stalker who seems to know too much about her previous life and has been taunting her through cryptic emails, steps into the fore. The investigation into the gruesome murder of a female cop and another apparently unrelated cop-death leads Megan where she does not want to go, but precisely where Wallace wants her. Faced with the prospect of losing everyone she has come close to loving, Megan must revive her former self – a survivor unafraid of getting her hands dirty – and destroy Wallace, whatever the collateral damage.
As with the earlier volumes, Olsen’s pacing is tight in Final Victim, and the emotional stakes are high, with Megan’s internal struggle – her reluctance to let anyone know of her past and her distress at keeping Ronnie, her partner and the closest thing she has ever had to a friend, in the dark – woven seamlessly into the taut procedural drama. The realistic and ever-evolving characters – from Megan and Ronnie all the way to the supporting cast – have always been the strength of this series and will be remembered for a long time. Olsen’s description of places, people, and action is vivid, conveying the tension and the urgency to the reader accurately.
However, the reveal of Wallace’s identity falls short of the expectations built for so long, as it feels slightly predictable. The ending, while offering resolution, does not tie up all the threads and feels somewhat rushed. I hope this vagueness is intentional, and Olsen has plans to develop those threads further with a spinoff or a continuation. For the present, though, Final Victim works well as a satisfactory culmination of this taut, gripping series with as much emotional depth as action, suspense, and blood!
I am grateful to Bookouture, for the digital review copy of Final Victim through NetGalley, in exchange for my unbiased review.
Final Victim is the 6th and best book in the Detective Megan Carpenter series. The book opens with Megan getting a call from Nan, the receptionist at the police department. She is letting her know that Wallace was there looking for her. Megan's blood goes cold, Wallace is her stalker and has been sending her messages for months. Before she can figure out what he wants, they get a call that a torso and a head have been found, in two different counties. The dead body belongs to a female police officer from another county. This investigation is going to require a lot of cooperation. Megan's partner, Ronnie is on vacation, but the Sheriff calls her and she quickly returns to help. As they investigate they find many other cases similar to this one and realize they have a serial killer. Megan is sure it is Wallace, but doesn't know who he is or why he would be doing this. Meanwhile, someone has been in her apartment. Is she safe? Can she tell the team about her stalker?
This is my favourite Detective Megan Carpenter book so far and it sounds like it might be the last one. I hope not. This is a twisty tale with a lot going on. Ronnie and Donna (IT from one of the other counties) are both whizzes on the computer and they are able to find all sorts of information. It soon becomes obvious that the killer is some sort of vigilante as all the victims are dirty cops. Megan is worried about keeping her friends and colleagues safe, as she is sure this has something to do with her past. Megan needs to stop trying to be a hero and do everything herself, as inevitably, it puts her in danger. I did figure out who Wallace was and I was right, but as the reader it was obvious as we get his POV at times. With a great cast of characters, a great setting and crime and superb police work, the case is solved but to what end. The ending was surprising, and I hope that I'm not right thinking this might be the end of this series. If you enjoy a good police procedural with a team approach, but one MC who is the center of the story, I recommend this book and series.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
In "Final Victim", the sixth installment of the Detective Megan Carpenter series, Gregg Olsen delivers another pulse-pounding crime thriller. Detective Megan Carpenter returns with her sharp instincts and relentless determination, ready to tackle another perplexing and dangerous case.
The story begins with the discovery of a chillingly staged crime scene, setting the tone for a narrative filled with suspense and unexpected twists.
As Carpenter delves deeper into the investigation, she uncovers a trail of victims, each connected by a sinister thread. Olsen's mastery of pacing and plot development ensures that the tension never lets up, making it nearly impossible to put the book down.
Detective Carpenter is a compelling and complex protagonist, whose personal struggles and fierce dedication to justice add depth to the narrative. Her character development continues to evolve, and readers will appreciate the layers of vulnerability and strength that Olsen skillfully portrays.
The novel's atmospheric writing vividly brings the settings to life, from the eerie crime scenes to tense interrogations. Olsen's attention to detail and ability to create a sense of foreboding enhance the immersive experience. The supporting characters are equally well-drawn, each contributing to the intricate web of intrigue and danger.
"Final Victim" is an exploration of the human psyche and the lengths to which one will go for revenge and redemption. Olsen's ability to weave together complex storylines with emotional resonance makes this book a standout in the genre.
My Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Highly recommended for fans of crime thrillers and suspenseful mysteries.
Gregg Olsen's "Final Victim" is a gripping and thought-provoking read that will leave you eagerly anticipating the next chapter in Detective Megan Carpenter's journey.
Final Victim is book 6 in the Detective Megan Carpenter Series. When the body of a local detective is found lying in the middle of the line separating two counties, Megan is called to cover the case for her county. Her normal partner, Ronnie, is regrouping after an intense case, so Megan begins the investigation working with other police departments. All kinds of craziness ensues when another body of a cop is found. There are more questions than answers as they all start digging into the case. Megan has a gift for figuring things out and her partner is a computer genius which makes them the perfect pair to solve the case. Clues from the recent murders take Megan back in time to events she’d rather remain buried. She worries that the killer is not only coming for her, but those she cares about. This was the first book I’ve read in this series. I’m sure the added background from previous books may have made things click for me a little sooner, but I did not feel like I was jumping into the middle of a story that I’d missed half of. The complexity of the characters and the way the author weaved the past into the present was very thoughtfully laid out. You were given enough of the back story without it feeling redundant. The story moved at just the right pace with plenty of twists and turns that held my interest. I appreciated the ending that was not a cliffhanger, but left the door open for a possible continuation of the series. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review!
Full disclosure: I read the first 3 books in the series and I skipped the last couple. If I had my time again, I might have skipped this one too but I read the whole thing. I found it really confusing, even with having read the first few, so I don't recommend reading this book as a standalone. The recaps of previous events in Megan's life might just frustrate you as much as it frustrated me..... Some authors are just better at doing this in a series. This particular author has overcomplicated things.
Megan Carpenter is a mess and a compulsive liar. There were very few positive aspects of her personality, to be honest. However, she is being stalked by someone called Wallace. Wallace is clearly trying to unnerve her, and it works.
When a headless body is found with one part of her in one county and the rest in another, it gets very complicated, very quickly. Who is this woman and why did someone hate her enough to kill her, especially in the way that they did? Turns out, she was the last in a connected string of murders...
Anyway, Megan is trying to figure out how to solve this complicated case, as well as keep herself and her friends and boyfriend safe.
I knew pretty early on who the "baddie" was and I wondered how it was all going to end.
Final Victim is the 6th book in the Megan Carpenter series. The story picks up from where book 5 ended with Megan receiving a chilling message from someone from her past. Like most fictional detectives, Megan has ghosts in her past. However, her past is darker than most. Anyone from her past looking for her is nothing bad news. The story takes a grim turn with the discovery of the body of a detective. Soon, it becomes clear to Megan and her partner, Ronnie, that they were dealing with a psychopath who was hell bent on causing pain and destruction.
I’ve always enjoyed Megan’s personality. Her quirkiness and wit add to her uniqueness. Her darkness is compelling especially given her line of work. Other support characters in the series such as Ronnie and Dan are also quite well developed and complement the development of Megan as a character. I like that they give her a more human perspective and add some softness to her otherwise tough personality.
This was a complex case that had Megan and her team scratching their heads. I was able to guess the identity of the baddie before the reveal but this didn’t take away my enjoyment of the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this instalment. It was dark, fast-paced, twisty and utterly captivating.
Final Victim, the sixth book in the Megan Carpenter series, brings a long-simmering threat to a powerful head. In this installment, Megan finally comes face to face with Wallace—the shadowy figure who has been covertly threatening her for far too long. As Megan and her team dig deeper, they uncover a disturbing trail of past victims, revealing that a serial killer has been operating for years and appears to be targeting police officers.
Megan is forced to juggle two urgent battles at once: solving the case before more lives are lost, and stopping Wallace before he destroys the carefully built life she’s fought so hard to protect—including the personal and professional relationships that matter most to her. The stakes feel deeply personal, and the tension reflects that every step of the way.
While Wallace’s identity became somewhat easier to guess as the layers were peeled back, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story. Watching Megan confront one of her greatest nightmares was incredibly satisfying, even though it comes at a heavy cost.
Overall, this was a gripping and emotional read. Dark, intense, and impactful, Final Victim delivers a strong payoff for longtime fans of the series.
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture & Gregg Olsen for an advanced reading copy.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for gifting me a digital ARC of the latest book in the Detective Megan Carpenter series by Gregg Olsen. All opinions expressed in this review are my own - 4 stars!
Detective Carpenter is called to the scene of the brutal death of a detective from another jurisdiction, with the body lying across two county lines. Then just a day later, a retired detective is found dead in his home. Megan is sure that there is a link between the deaths. She works with her partner, Ronnie, to investigate and Megan finds herself in the middle of a deadly plot. They find even more linked murders and Megan must face some hard truths about her past before they blow up her life.
I'm a big fan of this series and while I would encourage starting at the beginning, Olsen gives plenty of details to understand the important parts of Megan's history. I love the relationship between Megan and Ronnie as Megan has slowly allowed herself to get close to people. This is a great police procedural and I'm anxiously awaiting the next book to find out what happens after that ending!
Gregg Olsen has done it again with Final Victim! This sixth installment in the Detective Megan Carpenter series is everything I love about these books—gritty, emotionally intense, and packed with suspense that keeps you turning pages late into the night.
Megan Carpenter is such a compelling character—tough, vulnerable, and deeply human. In Final Victim, her past comes crashing into her present in the most chilling way, and the emotional stakes have never been higher. The plot is tightly woven, with twists that genuinely surprised me, and the pacing is relentless in the best way.
What I especially love about this series is how Olsen balances the psychological depth of Megan’s character with the thrill of the investigation. You feel every ounce of her fear, determination, and resilience. This book had me holding my breath more than once!
If you’re a fan of emotionally charged crime thrillers with a strong female lead, Final Victim is a must-read. I can’t wait to see where Megan’s journey takes her next.
Thank you to NetGalley, Gregg Olsen, and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was the sixth book in the Detectuve Megan Carpenter series. I have not read any of the other books and that did not hamper my enjoyment of this book, but I can honestly say I am now gonna go back and read the other five books. I really enjoyed this character and look forward to more books in this series .
Megan is a detective that does not play by the books. Megan has a secret past and it appears that somebody has come from her past and is threatening everything that she holds dear. When a series of brutal murders take place, the victims, police officers; Megan is put in the case and as Megan and her team investigate she wonders if theses murders somehow link to the person who is threatening her As Megan gets closer to finding out the killer’s identity, she finds herself in more and more in danger. Great ending,
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishing house, and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of this book in return for review based upon my own opinion.
First, I want to thank Gregg Olsen, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.
Ohh how I have missed Gregg Olsen’s Detective Megan Carpenter’s Series! I have been a huge fan of the series since his first book came out. Even though I am sad to learn The Final Victim is Gregg’s last in the series-he saved the best twists for last.
If you have not read any of Gregg’s Detective Megan Carpenter’s series I highly suggest you do because they are each amazing stories! However, you could read it as a standalone. I say this because Gregg refreshes the reader of the ups and downs of Megan’s past and how it has shaped the woman she has become now.
Megan’s stalker Wallace brought out all the mysterious twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my comfy chair, wide eyed, and glued to my kindle.
This was a twisted must read book that you have to add to your TBR list.
Book #6 in the Detective Megan Carpenter series by Gregg Olsen, a favorite author who has multiple excellent fiction and nonfiction titles to his credit. This book could easily be read....and enjoyed....as a stand alone; but as in most series, the development of the characters and the community in which they live is enriched by reading the books in order. Megan is a police detective now but her past has been filled with events that placed her at odds with the police. Her actions were needed to stay alive and sane. Just as she is starting to feel safe and build a life that includes friends and family, the past intrudes again. Told in two POVs, you learn her story as she sees it vs the killer that is hunting her as she hunts them.
Gregg Olsen is a must read author for me who I have recommended many times. His books feel like "you are there" as the characters pull you into the pages with them. Once you've read one of his books, you'll quickly look for more.
I like the way Megan has gone trough an evolution from being a loner, fighting for a good cause but going about it the wrong way, to a person who lets others in, still fighting for a good cause but going about it the right way now.
Of course you caannot change 100%n because some characteristics cannot be changed and once in a while she needs to be Rylee again a in small or when she thinks it's necessary, a big way.
I can see her point of view. Sometimes to make bad things go away, there is only one way to do it...
And now it's time to put an end to the ghost form the past who keeps hunting her. She will finally look them in the eye, but who is it she will come face to face to?
One person was high on my list of suspects.
I had picked the correct name through my marvelous detective work (lol) and I was very happy, but my happiness did not last for a very long time...
I was shocked by the ending and am now counting the days until I know more, because I can hardly wait.
Great book with an ending that left me flabbergasted. 5 stars
