Mer-Queen Serapha has been murdered. The already fragile human-merfolk truce is shattered. And as Angie and Kaden find themselves on opposite sides of a rapidly escalating conflict, their loyalties to their families, their people, and each other will be tested.

When news of the merfolk become widespread in Angie’s Pacific Northwest town, she fights to protect the mer from those who wish them harm. But as vicious seas consume coastal cities and tragedy strikes her town and her family, she’ll need to decide whether to save her family and her people, or her relationship with Kaden and the mer.

In Mer-Prince Kaden’s queendom, an unlikely family member takes the throne, sowing dissent among the already fractured queendom and further straining their deteriorating relationship with humans. Branded a traitor for loving a human, he must make a choice between letting his family plunge the mer into all-out war, or fighting for the throne to unite his people, but leave Angie behind, as he can never take a human queen.

A cataclysmic war between humans and mer looms, and if Angie and Kaden cannot find a way to bring peace between their people, they’ll find their truce shattered beyond repair, and the sea-crossed lovers will find themselves separated forever.

Unless the mer drown the world in their rage and sorrow, first.

What a beautiful ending to this mermaid romance! I’ve loved following Angie and Kaden as they navigate a world filled with tension between merfolk and humans. The mystery element was such a great touch (I love a whodunnit) and I’ve developed a real soft spot for Cyrus. And the cat, I absolutely adored her!

🌊 Thanks so much for the opportunity to read an ARC of this story!

As a mermaid enthusiast, I was so happy to dive back into this world with Midnightsong (the second book of the duology). I loved following Angie and Kaden’s story — even though they are forced to be apart for long stretches due to the human/merfolk conflict, there’s always a strong sense of emotional closeness and support between them that makes their relationship truly special.

I ended up reading almost the whole book in one day because I just needed to know how it would end! It’s emotional, immersive, and a beautiful conclusion to the duology. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. A great follow-up to Oceansong! 🌙✨

In the months since the end of Oceansong, Angie has moved back to Seattle to complete her graduate studies, while still in a relationship with Mer-Prince Kaden. The truce between mer and humans has held – albeit uneasily.

That fragile peace is shattered with the death of Queen Serapha – leader of the Mer and Kaden’s mother. Her death, at the hands of humans, leaves a power vacuum at the heart of the queendom. This second book in the duet goes deeper into Mer politics than its predecessor – something I personally loved, though the plot line did seem to stall at times. Kaden – the spare to his brother’s heir – is forced to navigate a new arena and old family bonds, both of which are more complex than they first appear. I really felt for Kaden in these scenes – he’s clearly trying to do right by both sets of people, and it takes a while for him to discover his own strength. His character arc can be summed up in what his brother Cyrus tells him: “You must believe yourself worthy, or nobody else will.”

Meanwhile, Angie also sees her role change due to outside forces. News of the mer goes countrywide. Surrounded by students, faculty and media who all have different opinions on how to handle them, Angie becomes the reluctant face of the mer rights movement, with all the scrutiny that involves.

Though I liked how much the second book in this duet raised the stakes, that wider focus sometimes meant characters seemed to be forgotten – disappearing from the narrative for extended periods. A tighter focus would have made for a more impactful story on Angie’s side.

Kaden, as ever, is there to support and protect Angie – “I would drown the world if it meant keeping you safe,” he tells her. With so much of the first book seeing Angie enter Kaden’s world, I was glad that the reverse happened here. Kaden experiencing a glimpse of human life – away from the troubles undersea – was joyful, and also led to one of the funniest scenes in the book (who knew a knee scooter could be so versatile?!)

If anything, I’d had loved to see more in-person interaction between the two main characters. Angie and Kaden bring out the best in each other, and their relationship really shines when they’re together.

Midnightsong doesn’t entirely outswim the issues of its predecessor – for its lofty themes, the writing still feels a little too simplistic for my liking. However, it does succeed in showing more of the Mer society, and how they can be just as flawed as humans.

Throughout, Angie and Kaden are each other’s anchor. Their love is still a source of hope – and it makes the entire Oceansong duet a decent choice for those wanting a romantasy with a different twist in the tail.

What a great sequel! It started a bit slowly and I thought it would be a 4-star read, but it eventually picked up and I enjoyed the politics between the humans and mers and how Kaden and Angie struggled to keep things together and prevent another war. I also enjoyed how some elements of the first book were clarified in the sequel (e.g. why nobody helped Creston during the first war).

At 67% I guessed most of the resolution of the intrigue (the cause of Cyrus's condition, Serapha's killer, etc.) but it didn't prevent me from enjoying the rest of the book and admiring the author for smartly adding the clues one by one.

To conclude, a sequel worthy of its predecessor. Thanks to the author and the publisher for the ARC!

Spice: 🌶️.5/5

C.W. Rose left us with a tenuous HFN at the end of Oceansong, and Midnightsong picks up where Oceansong left off – peace feels like a fragile piece of seaglass, about to fracture…and it does.

💙Modern Day Romeo & Juliet meets The Little Mermaid
🖤Forbidden Love
💙Reluctant Hero & Heroine
🖤“Who did this to you?”
💙Magic Beneath the Waves

Kaden’s mother, Mer-Queen Serapha, has been assassinated. The fragile truce between humans and merfolk has been shattered, and Kaden and Angie find themselves on opposite sides of yet another war on the horizon – balancing loyalty to their families and their people, and being in tested ways they haven’t been before.

With news of merfolk becoming widespread, Angie’s fighting to protect the mer from those who wish them harm. But, the seas are fighting back and coastal cities face tragedies, including her hometown. Now, Angie has to decide whether to save her family and her people, or her relationship with Kaden and the mer…again.

In Kaden’s queendom, he relinquishes his claim to the throne to his uncle, who ends up sowing dissent and further weakening the relationship with humans. Now, branded as a traitor by his people for falling in love with a human, Kaden feels as if he’s made a huge mistake in giving up his rule. Kaden is now working against the tide to stop his family from another war and taking back the throne to unite his people, something he will never be able to have with Angie by his side as he can’t take a human queen.

Will Angie and Kaden be able to broker peace once and for all, and will these sea-crossed lovers be able to stay together in the process?

C.W. Rose did not shy away from uncomfortable aspects of violent conflict, and while fantasy, these problems are very much like ones we experience in our societies today. You will be angry at both the mer and the humans, and will be rooting for peace to be attained. Kaiden and Angie feel like they're working against the currents and are separated for stretches of time, but their connection remains steadfast and their emotional bond makes their relationship so special. I really enjoyed seeing these two come into their own as individuals, and as a couple.

Tension heats up, again, between merfolk and humans after Queen Serapha is suspected of being killed by humans. Angie, who is continuing her doctoral studies, must return to Alaska planning to repair the relationship between humans and merfolk, while also finding out who is behind Queen Serapha's murder. Kaden, who refuses to take the throne, has no choice but to accept his uncle's decision to take revenge on humans, which makes it difficult for him to even go to the surface, let alone meet Angie. connected by the seaflute, Kaden and Angie must work their parts separately to repair the peace between the two realms, this time for good. This book is a sequel to Oceansong, reading the first book is highly recommended!✨

"And Angie?"
"Yes?"
"Hearing your voice again is a welcoming light in the deep sea's dark."

I think this book was okay for me. actually the storyline is good, the plot and the characters are also well developed. but I feel like we are back to square one where merfolk and humans are heating up again and taking the lives of each other again, and even worse this time😢 Kaden and Angie have to separate for a while because the situation is not safe for both to meet. maybe their time together in this book is only 20% and the rest, they're busy trying to bring peace back for both parties. Oh, they stay connected with the seaflute (like a magic phone that can connect Kaden and Angie when they are in different realms) and I think it's so adorable. I like the mystery plot here, how surprising it turns out it was not an ordinary murder mystery. overall, it's an enjoyable read. a paranormal mystery, some suspense and a hint of romance always make for a good read✨ If you like paranormal mysteries, forbidden love stories across two realms, and political intrigues, you need to read this series✨

[4/5] ⭐️ Tides of Love and War

ARC Review – Thank you for the opportunity to read this story early. Here’s my short review:

📖 Plot
Midnightsong continues the story of Angie and Kaden right after Oceansong, and the stakes have never been higher. With Mer-Queen Serapha dead and tensions between humans and merfolk escalating, both must navigate loyalty, love, and responsibility. Angie fights to protect her people while facing devastating losses, and Kaden struggles with political unrest in his queendom. The story is filled with intrigue, emotional choices, and the ever-present danger of a war that could tear both worlds apart.

📖 Characters
Angie is brave, resourceful, and deeply empathetic, while Kaden remains magnetic and conflicted, trying to balance love and duty. Their bond is tested constantly, but their connection feels genuine and powerful. Supporting characters add depth, drama, and tension, and the political intrigue among the merfolk makes the stakes feel real.

📖 Worldbuilding & Setting
The Pacific Northwest setting blends perfectly with the magical merfolk world. The seas feel alive with danger and beauty, and the author does a great job of showing the challenges of two cultures trying to coexist. The fantasy elements are immersive without being overwhelming, and the world feels consistent and rich.

📖 Writing Style
The writing is immersive, easy to follow, and balances action, emotion, and romance well. While the pacing slows a bit during political discussions, it never loses tension, and the emotional depth keeps you invested in both Angie and Kaden.

📖 Recommendation
If you enjoy mer-human romances with political intrigue, high stakes, and emotional depth, this sequel is a captivating read. It is intense, beautifully written, and perfect for fans of forbidden love and fantasy with suspense.

I received a digital ARC of ‘Midnightsong’ by C.W. Rose in exchange for an honest review.

Two years since the truce between humans and merfolk was made, it is shattered with the sudden murder of Mer-Queen Serapha by an unknown human. This time the conflict between humans and merfolk is much bigger, as the general public has learned about mermaids, and many different factions are trapping, testing, and dissecting mermaids. As tensions and body counts build, Kaden finds himself branded a traitor for his feelings for Angie. And Angie finds herself struggling to advocate for peaceful interactions with the merfolk. Can the two find away to reestablish peace once again?

The greater conflict and continued growing tension between the merfolk and humans was interesting to read, though both sides of the conflict are a little less nuanced compared to Oceansong. Angie's continued dogged pursuit of justice and peace was a reasonable portrayal of how one person could make a major difference even when the issue is so much larger than an individual. Those parts were intriguing, though the realistic timeline did unfortunately slow down the pacing of the narrative.

My main complaint was how frustrating Kaden was in this book. He is so passive and naive it borders on stupidity. It is somewhat explained that he was never expected to be in power, and that his family had groomed him to assume a supportive role, but he'd been working as a royal advisor for two years! That position should have exposed him to more court intrigue and politics so that he wasn't completely blindsided by his uncle's extremely obvious machinations. It was also baffling that he needed the rules of succession explained to him multiple times. You're a prince, Kaden! You should know that already.

Overall, Midnightsong continued the themes of Oceansong on a larger scale. Sadly, I did not enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the first book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Quick Summary: A mer sci-fi/fantasy romance adventure

My Review: Midnightsong by C.W. Rose is book #2 in the Oceansong duology. It is scheduled for release on 11/11/25.

About the Book: "A cataclysmic war between humans and mer looms, and if Angie and Kaden cannot find a way to bring peace between their people, they’ll find the fragile mer-human truce shattered beyond repair, and the sea-crossed lovers will find themselves separated forever."

In My Own Words: Love, loss, betrayal, and sacrifices meet two star-crossed lovers on land and in the sea.

My Final Say: This is one of the most original mer stories I have read. Part 2 picked up right where part 1 left off. It was easy to slide into the installment. This one had the same action and intensity as the other one. Hard choices had to be made. An air of mystery and intrigue loomed. Political tension and war games were rampant. Kaden and Angie faced the crises that came their way and ended up choosing love, yet again.

Other: Readers who like mer-human relationships, forbidden love romances, and fantasies with suspense and intrigue may enjoy this book.

Angie is finally chasing her dreams, and Kaden is right there with her or in this case, at his aunt’s place. I was excited going in, and the plot was genuinely stronger this time. Then tragedy struck. He lost his mom, the throne ended up in the wrong hands, and honestly, I don’t blame him for doubting himself. He was the spare prince who was meant to live a normal life, not carry the weight of a kingdom. And his uncle? I despised him from the moment he appeared. You could smell the shady intentions from miles away.

This book took me longer to finish because it’s a dual POV told in third person, and I kept wondering why the villain wasn’t dealt with earlier. Another war breaks out, just like in book 1, and while they do resolve it, there’s so much destruction and grief along the way. The spice is very minimal and only pops in quickly near the end, which was disappointing for me. And yes, the couple gets separated again for a long stretch, just like before.

But I’m still getting the trophy copy to match the first book because that cover is absolutely gorgeous. I’m also really glad Kaden makes the right decisions this time. Christine weaves in ocean preservation beautifully, the plot is much bigger than I expected, and she gives them a well-deserved HEA.

This is my honest opinion for the ARC I received. Thank you, Christine, for the opportunity. I’m so glad I’ve been able to follow your journey since your debut.

This is the sequel to Oceansong, which I really enjoyed earlier this year, so I was excited to dive back into this mer world set in the Pacific Northwest (yes, I’m a biased Seattleite). One thing I continue to love about this series is the Asian representation woven into the story — it adds so much and makes me even more invested.

Midnightsong follows Kaden and Angie dealing with the aftermath of Queen Serapha’s death, Angie heading off to school in Alaska, and the rising tension between humans and merfolk. There’s a lot more political intrigue this time, giving us a deeper look into mer society and the messy fight for peace.

But the part that kept me hooked was the forbidden romance. This one gives full Romeo-and-Juliet energy compared to the enemies-to-lovers vibe in book one. Angie and Kaden’s long-distance struggle, mixed with the pressure of being on opposing sides, hit harder than I expected. Both see the brutal consequences of their people’s conflict, and watching them fight for peace and struggle to keep their own relationship was the heart of the book. Some sections did drag a bit and I expected more action, but overall it’s a great follow-up and a satisfying conclusion to their story.

If you want a modern, reversed Little Mermaid with star-crossed lovers, definitely check this one out.

Thank you rrbooktours and author for my gifted copy.

“There’s no such thing as a difficult woman. Only one who knows her worth.”

“I would drown the world if it meant keeping you safe,” he said softly.

And just like that Angie and Kaden’s story has come to an end.

MidnightSong is the last book in this duet and highlights just how similar the mer people are to humans. And how far we all will go to protect our people especially those we love.

The turmoil in this book was definitely more intense than book one, and I loved that! As Angie was doing her investigation and going to class I was definitely curious what was going on with the people around her and their opinions of the mers. I absolutely loved that Kaden was the one experiencing some human things this time around! That was very entertaining 😆
And just like in the first book I just love the amount of Asian culture immersed in the pages.
I do feel the romance was put on the back burner this time, but once you read and realize the issues at play it definitely makes sense. I just lost this magic between the MCs for a while. It definitely is more heavy on the high stakes at hand. But we get the most wonderful happy ending and I am so here for it!

If you looking for a romantasy duet with more political issues along with the romance but definitely has its own twist this is for you!

Thank you CW Rose and R&R Tours for my eARC. 🫶🏼

4.3 stars - a forbidden romance between a mermaid and a land dweller with a looming war.

This is a little mermaid retelling with hints of political play, and two reluctant heroes (and a forbidden romance).

I expected it to be more adult fantasy and romance, but it leaned more romantasy YA. Once I slightly changed my standards, i actually ended up enjoying this book a lot. The world C.W. Rose created was immersive and vivid in my mind's eye. The writing style was beautifully done, a delicate and rich prose that drew me in.

However, I wish the magic system was a bit more developed. I feel like there was a lot of potential to make the powers just so much... more. But it still worked fine in the book, so I'm satisfied. There could've been more emotional moments, like a quiet change of pace without the rush and bustle. Just letting the moment between our two heroes absorb. The characters personal journey and the overarching journey (the plot) was enjoyable to read, and the slow development through each scene had me anticipating the next chapter. And despite some of my guesses, most plottwists were still surprising. The conclusion was neatly tied, which was quite satisfying after the book's contents.

I'd recommend it to mermaid fans or even those who enjoy retellings with a twist. Of course, if any of the tropes piqued your interest I suggest give it a read. It's a light, enjoyable read.

Midnightsong begins with a quiet tension that slowly grows into something heavier and deeply emotional. The story continues Angie and Kaden’s complicated human–merfolk relationship, but this time the peaceful rhythm of their connection is shaken the moment an unsettling phone call comes in from Stefan and everything begins to spiral.

What I loved most was how grounded Angie feels here: exhausted from school, juggling research, dreaming of underwater peace, and still holding onto her long-distance love with Kaden. Her love for the ocean and her determination to fight pollution made her feel real, flawed, and easy to root for.

The underwater world remains beautifully written glowing coral, sweeping currents, kelp forests, tiny glowing creatures, and entire underwater palaces.

The author knows exactly how to make the ocean feel alive and mysterious. If you enjoy fantasy romances with danger, underwater magic, slow tension, forbidden love, and political stakes, this will absolutely pull you in.

Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the ARC!

I really enjoyed the first book, Oceansong, so I was excited to continue the series with Midnightsong. While this sequel was still good, I don’t think it quite reached the level of the first book for me. I was definitely curious and eager to see what would happen next, but at some point I found it a little hard to fully connect with Angie and Kaden this time. The romance is still cute and sweet, but it didn’t feel very different from book one—almost like rereading parts of the first book in a way.

However, Midnightsong had several strengths that I really appreciated. It connects naturally with Oceansong, so diving back into the world felt smooth and familiar. I also loved seeing Angie take a more active role in negotiating with the mer; those scenes were really fun. And, like the first book, this one continues to highlight the importance of treating mer and animals with compassion, which is a message I really loved. And of course—the ocean vibes were amazing once again!

Overall, while the sequel didn’t hit quite as hard for me as the first book, it was still an enjoyable read, and I’m glad I picked it up.

3.5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed Oceansong so had high hopes for the second book in this duology! It was an interesting continuation of the events of Oceansong, answering some of the questions about what was next for the world now that mermaids had so publicly engaged with humans in the town of Creston. While we got a glimpse at Angie and Kaden's life after the battle at the docks of Creston, it was cool to see a more concrete conclusion and happily ever after for them! While I enjoyed Midnightsong, it didn't grab my attention quite as much as the first book. What really captured my attention in Oceansong was the vivid descriptions of the environment and world-building. It felt like this book didn't build on that as much as it just left it be as very little of the book was set in Alaska. This series definitely reads more YA - I wouldn't mind the language and writing style as much if it were labelled as YA rather than Adult Romantasy!

Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC!

This was an intense and emotional follow up that raises the stakes for both the merfolk and the humans. With the Mer Queen’s assassination shattering the fragile peace, Angie and Kaden are pulled onto opposite sides of a growing war. The coastal setting, rising danger, and political tension make this installment feel bigger and heavier.

I loved how this book deepens the worldbuilding and shows the cost of divided loyalties. Angie’s fight to protect the mer and Kaden’s struggle to reclaim his place among his people make their journey feel raw and real. Their long distance, forbidden romance has strong Romeo and Juliet energy and their bond stays steady even with everything working against them.

This sequel is packed with emotion, conflict, and hard choices. It delivers a satisfying continuation of Angie and Kaden’s story while expanding the magical merfolk world in bold ways.

Second book in the Oceansong Duology, and it was just as good as the first one 🤩 Two worlds—the Sea and the Land—and one forbidden love. But being king comes with sacrifices...

MidnightSong by C.W. Rose is book 2 in the duology by the author. MidnightSong is the second and final book in the duology that started with OceanSong. Oceansong was left on a cliffhanger as a heads up. I will not spoil the previous book nor this one. This book starts with the truce between humans and merfolk being destroyed at this point. Angie and Kaden are back in the fore front of this book and Angie has a tough choice to make either save her family and her race or Kaden and their relationship. Kaden is busy on working on the merfolk politics after the queen has died. He knows he can not take Angie as a queen as she is human and this ending will leave you breathless. I love this author's writing and she does so well with writing an engaging merfolk and human story. I really like this series and hope that the author comes out with a different book or book series also.

I want to thank the author for another amazing Mer/Human Romantasy! This book has so much of the MerWorld that everyone craves. Love, food, passion, family, betrayal, politics, tsunami, etc.

This book is a continuation of Oceansong following Kaden and Angie’s love story. The Mer and Humans are still fighting after a devastating tragedy to the Mer Queendom and with Cyrus still healing, Kaden passes on further advancement in the Queendom.

I had predicted correctly about Uncle Saeryn’s intentions. I did not foresee some things that happened but I knew a lot of what was happening was based on vendettas and prejudices between the Mer and humans.

This was a great book and I loved it! Check out the series!

From the first page, Midnightsong drew me in with its hauntingly beautiful prose and richly drawn world. The merging of myth, sea, and fate is exquisite the setting feels alive, filled with salt wind, hidden depths, and the echo of old songs.

The characters are layered and real: they carry regret and hope in equal measure, and their emotional journeys resonate long after reading. The romance is tender yet charged, the magic subtle but powerful, and the stakes both personal and epic.

Overall, this is a book I’ll remember for its mood, its voice, and its ability to make me feel deeply.

Everything between Angie and Kaden is going great. Angie is in school and seeing Kaden in between with both of their species living in peace. That is until Serapha the mer-queen is murdered and the truce between the humans and merfolk is shattered. Not only is the alliance shattered but the news of merfolk is spreading and more of them are being captured every day. While Angie fights to protect the merfolk and find the late mer-queens killer, Kaden is forced into a role that separates them and puts them on opposite sides of the war. I loved this book more than the first. It was gripping, spicey, political, and an epic romance that is so different than anything that I have read.

“Midnightsong,” by C. W. Rose

This book was so good. I thought book 1 packed a little bit more of a punch but still a great book. I think the pacing wasn’t my favorite aspect of the story. I adored the eco-friendly PNW story with a human and merman. I loved the magic system and how that magic costs him but he can’t keep away from her. This series is definitely unique and doesn’t read like any mermaid romance books I’ve read, which I love. I like the main characters and their forbidden romance. 4 out of 5 stars.

-Merman X Human
-Eco-friendly Themes

Hello, people!
I should mention that this is the second book in the Oceansong trilogy and series.
The protagonists are Angie and Kaden.
First, let me say that I missed reading the first book to see in depth the development of the story and the characters.
Nevertheless, it was a nice read with a strong element of mystery and tension. I also liked the messages of the story such as family, love, betrayal, fist and battle (internal and not).

Thank you very much to the author and Iris PR for the eARC!

I loved the mix of genres in this story, and found this to be an exciting, fun read. Kaden and Angie are a unique mirror of Romeo + Juliet and I enjoyed the beautiful weaving of Asian culture into the story with Angie’s family. The magic system in this story is so clever with how the mer and humans can interact on land and in the sea (and “interact” 🌶️ iykyk), and the political dynamics within Kaden’s family had me glued to the page to find out what happened next. This was a nice conclusion to this duet and I think the author for an ARC of this book!

SO given I wasn't able to read the first book, I thought I'd be a little lost in the details. But this was a very well thought our book on its own. I was able to get lost in the story and fully invest in their lives.

It was a really gripping tale of love and quite a bit of politics within the mer community. And it was thrilling to experience this all in a different setting than is the usual plots for books. I have not read much mermaid books and this was new and very gripping. there was a lot of suspense in it and it was really nice to read.

a solid 3.5!

I really enjoyed this as a sequel in the Oceansong series, it had that mermaid fantasy element that I enjoyed from Oceansong and continued the story perfectly. It was great getting into this world again and coming back into the characters. I was invested in what was happening with the characters and enjoyed getting to go on this journey with the characters. C. W. Rose does an amazing job in writing this sequel and was able to capture the magic of the previous book and left me wanting to read more.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC.

When I requested this I had no idea this was a sequel. I could tell this was following up after I got into this book, but I do think it wasn't too bad being dropped into this story as it does a good job discussing the events in the previous book. I did like the characters in this one. I also do think the world building is interesting and I was certainly wanting to know more about this world. I did think the writing was overly simplistic at times. However I do think this was a pretty decent book.

Thank you NetGalley and Hey Hey Books, LLC for the ARC!

I absolutely loved the conclusion to this book! The inner turmoil that both Kaden and Angie had to face this time around really left you hoping the best for each one. Their relationship is just so cute and they support each other so well, especially since the takes were high this time around. I just wished we could have seen them just a bit more together, I loved those moments the most! Overall, I really loved this a lot! I can’t wait to reread this!
