The Freelancer kills people who need killing. Behind his cover as a New York banker, Axel Monk is the deadliest assassin for an organization called the Conglomerate. They tell him who to eliminate, and he gets it done. Clean. Professional. Untraceable.
When Mexico's most ruthless cartel boss plans a coup that threatens to destabilize North America, Monk goes in as an arms dealer. It should be a simple hit. But someone inside the Conglomerate has other plans. With a mole feeding his every move to the enemy and allies he can't trust, Monk must navigate a maze of betrayal where one wrong step means a bullet in the back.
Chase Austin delivers another ruthless thriller - a blood-soaked journey into the depths of Mexican cartels.
Perfect for fans of Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne, FREELANCER launches a pulse-pounding new series that will keep you turning pages until dawn.
Another adrenaline filled, action-packed, on-the-run thriller by Chase Austin.
There is a rumour of a big cartel 'move' that will shake up the balance of power in the Central American & Mexican drug trade. Which will, of course, also affect the U.S.
The Freelancer's cover and 'job' is on the line in Mexico from all sides, and he can't trust anyone. Including his own government and his Conglomerate handler.
The whole mission stinks to high heaven. But that's to be expected.
He is outed and on the run with support by the mysterious Mockingbird. It is a rather unusual but fitting code name.
A whirlwind of a read until the very end....
Can't wait until the next installment!!
Fans of Capri/Lee's Reacher, Pendleton's Mack Bolan, and Flemings' James Bond will enjoy this.
I received an ARC copy of the book from the author, and I am giving you my honest review.
In the past, I have had the opportunity to read a few of Chase Austin's previous books (from his Sam Wick universe) and that is how he hooks you into his books. Having written a couple of series in the action thriller/covert operations genre (Fantastic Fiction lists twenty-three books under his umbrella), Austin has become known for pulse-pounding action thriller fiction and adventurous covert ops that deftly blend pulse-pounding action, nail-biting suspense at a breakneck pace.
Freelancer is the first book in his fourth series (aptly self-titled) and this is my review of his latest book. This was my first Axel Monk book and though it is 338 pages in length, I think that I can sum this book in five words - Talk about fast and furious! This seemed to be a short story, long on action, and short on character development. The action is meant to garner interest in the series that is coming with the promise to develop characters as the entries progress.
In the Freelancer universe, there is a top-secret organization known as "The Conglomerate", an enigmatic entity that transcended borders and laws. The organization has its fingers in numerous pies, and its influence was felt in the darkest corners of the world. One of their prized assets is the Freelancer (a nickname for assassin Axel Monk based upon an operation that he had undertaken early in his career where it appeared that he was working for three different organizations).
--------- About Axel Monk
Axel Monk AKA the Freelancer - That was his name in the underworld. Whispered in hushed tones, feared, respected, and sometimes even envied. His unique talent lay in his clean, efficient kills. No collateral damage, no loose ends, and an uncanny ability to vanish into thin air, making him a ghost in a world full of predators.
He was the prized asset of The Conglomerate, an enigmatic entity that transcended borders and laws. They had their fingers in numerous pies, and their influence was felt in the darkest corners of the world. They had other assets and other agents, but none could match Axel's ruthless efficiency. And he didn't come cheap. At 10 million dollars a mission, Axel was reserved for the most difficult and dangerous jobs. His targets were those that others feared to even whisper about.
Axel Monk was an enigma, even to those within the Conglomerate, of which he had been a part for over a decade. His stature was imposing, tall, and athletic, yet it was the way he moved that truly struck those around him. Like a panther poised to strike, he had been a ballet of precision and calculated grace, his every motion a testament to the rigorous years of physical conditioning.
His body was a canvas of scars, each telling a story of a battle he had waged, a mission he had undertaken. The stark baldness of his head, decorated with the collage of those scars, added a dangerous edge to his look. His face was chiseled, but the kind that could blend into a crowd yet command attention when he chose.
A pair of piercing ice-blue eyes, often concealed behind high-end sunglasses, surveyed the world with a professional detachment that made others uneasy. Those eyes had been his most formidable weapon, capable of cutting through the most intricate of deceptions, unveiling secrets that wished to remain hidden.
Mentally, Monk was as formidable as he was physically. His intelligence was sharp, honed like the knives he so skillfully wielded. His decision-making process was swift and precise, built on years of experience and countless hours studying his craft. He held a chess player's mindset, always two steps ahead, perpetually calculating risks and counter-moves. He was patient, capable of waiting for hours, even days, for the right moment to strike. His psychological resilience was a formidable armor, enabling him to endure the harshest conditions and resist the most invasive interrogations.
Adept in hand-to-hand combat, explosives, weaponry, and stealth, he had been a jack of all trades and a master of all. From Krav Maga to Systema, from firearms to knives, Monk was a maestro of death.
And yet, the art of war wasn't the only domain where Monk excelled. His tongue was as lethal as his fists, mastering eight languages fluently. He could charm a target in French, negotiate a deal in Mandarin, or intercept and interpret an encrypted Russian communication with ease.
In the past decade, Monk had completed an impressive array of more than fifty missions that spanned continents and political boundaries. From silencing rogue elements in North Korea, and protecting high-value targets in Eastern Europe to extraction missions in hostile territories of the Middle East, Monk had done it all.
Two missions, in particular, had etched Monk's name into the annals of the assassin verse's hall of fame. The daring rescue of a high-ranking NATO officer from a fortified compound in war-torn Afghanistan had won him the Conglomerate's highest honor. Later, Monk single-handedly averted a global catastrophe by disarming a thermonuclear device in the heart of Moscow with just seconds to spare.
Monk was considered the best in the business for reasons beyond his physical prowess and mental acuity. His understanding of the human psyche, his ability to blend into any crowd, and his unyielding adherence to his code made him a peerless predator in a world populated by monsters. His success rate, an astounding 100%, was the final piece of the puzzle, explaining his lofty standing in this gruesome fraternity.

On my self-defined five-star scale, I would give Freelancer three-and-a-half stars (which rounds to a "soft" four stars) and would be enjoyed by fans of Robert Ludlum's Bourne franchise, Aiden Bailey, and Logan Ryles as each book in his series is a journey into a world of high stakes, relentless action, and gripping suspense, making him a standout name in thriller fiction. Chase Austin demonstrates his talent for crafting adrenaline-fueled narratives which has (and will) earned him a dedicated following among fans of the genre.
As with all my literary ramblings, these are my five cents worth (though I did borrow from Chase Austin's website in my background blurb about Axel Monk).
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This latest story has Monk going into Mexico to assassinate a cartel leader. This would not be an easy mission because El Tigre, the cartel leader, had an attempt on his life just a short time earlier and he was being very careful in where he went. Monk was acting as an arms dealer who wanted to sell weapons to El Tigre.
Monk also was given another mission that he needed to perform prior to killing El Tigre, a different cartel member. Monk was able to handle this mission, but El Tigre was another story. It seems that someone was providing Monk's actions putting him in danger.
To discover who the mole was, what dangers Monk had to overcome and how it all worked out in the end, then you need to read this book.
The ending is well worth the wait, don't miss out. Get this book, you won't be sorry!
Chase Austin starts a great new series with Freelancer
The Conglomerate consists of The Commissioner, whose authority is split is split between an international Board of Directors that has unknown number of members and a number of field supporters. The Conglomerate is over 100 years and been involved with a wide variety of international world-wide number of group topics.
Axel Monk (nom de plume, The Freelancer)the world's most deadliest assassin, has been an assassin for Conglomerate for a long time. Monk's latest mission is to bring to safety the ex-Prime Minister Ramiz Raja Khan of Pakistan.
The problem is Monk wants this mission to be his last. Several things you need to know: No member of the Conglomerate has ever left this organization; the Commissioner told Axel he will give his answer swer if he his decision if he completes this next mission. Axel looks over the mission and quickly realizes this mission will result in his death.
Read this book and find out if Axel completes his mission and gets his permission to depart the Conglomerate! It's a killer of a story!
Freelancer: A Freelancer Action Thriller (Freelancer Action Thriller Series Book 1), my third read from author Chase Austin, a 338-page action thriller that grabbed me and kept me reading until finished in a single setting, totally unputdownable. My first read of the Freelancer Action Thrillers in which Austin goes back in time when Axel Monk worked for a shadow organization known as the Conglomerate. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Death Stream: A Freelancer Action Thriller #2 (Freelancer Action Thriller Series) & Monk Assassin: Axel Monk Thrillers Book 1 already on my TBR list and I'll have to read both before Monk Family Man: A marriage written in blood (Axel Monk Thrillers Book 5) is published in July of next year. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
Definitely intriguing. Axel Monk, the Freelancer, is masterful with super-human endurance. Nearly always on the run but typically stays at least one step ahead of his pursuers. There are times, however, he needs assistance but who can he trust? The mystery – who is leaking information as to his whereabouts? Who is interfering with his mission and why? With an easy reading format, this question and the fast pace action will keep you turning pages till the end – or does it ever end?
Another, well-written and exciting adventure novel that will entertain despite the violence. Who doesn’t love a super hero? I am grateful for the opportunity to read and offer my honest and voluntary review.
Leavening this review voluntarily as a member of the ARC Team. This book simply does not disappoint. I have read a number of books with similar characters and story lines, but have to say Monk is among my favorites. He is not a super human inthat he gets hurt and bleeds, get tired, stretched to the limits of his endurance, trusts others, gets betrayed and that is all in a days work. This story pits a shadow operator from the Conglomerate against a Mexican Cartel head honcho and members of the Mexican government. He is not sure exactly what he is up against in the heavily fortified compound of El Tiger and who he can really trust. The story moves very rapidly and the author does a good job developing the characters and the story.
An action-packed story of a contract to eliminate a Mexican drug cartel leader, with multiple twists and turns involving a potential traitor in the Conglomerate causing Monk to be on the back foot as his next move always seems known to the opposition. Then there is potential for a cartel war and a possible government coup. Despite betrayal and major injuries Monk perseveres until the contract is fulfilled, and one final twist comes to light when a person who has assisted Monk throughout surprises him with the real relationship. An exciting read with Monk almost supernatural with injuries received along the way.
Axel Monk is beset by lies, secrets and betrayal while on his latest undercover mission, in Chase Austin's Freelancer. His target's a paranoid cartel boss known as El Tigre, who's based in Mexico and has already been targeted by rivals. Can the eponymous Freelancer get close enough to make the hit?
I really enjoyed the way the tension was kept electric with the use of short, character-driven chapters and alternating POVs that made the action seem even more dramatic, while still keeping it realistic.

Freelancer has been described as reliable and deadly. …..The first in a fast-paced action thriller series about banker Axel Monk whose mission is to kill people who “need to be killed”. He delivers results no-one else can, but knows he is also an expendable asset.
Loyalty, duplicity, secrets, coercion and a sense of urgency, combined with ongoing conflict between Mexican cartels and possibly even more, builds a compelling story……I was kept reading long into the night, then, like Monk, had my own nightmares.
This book is very fast paced, full of twists and turns, with many different players in the mix with competing agendas such that Monk can never be sure who he can trust and rely on in any situation. The action is the sort that keeps you so gripped that it makes the book a very speedy read because you want to know what is round the next corner/chapter and so, inevitably, you don't want to put it down.
WOW! Cartels, the Conglomerate, the Mexican government, and US government agencies... This story has more twists than a cruller or a French braid, and more turns than Singapore's Marina Bay Street Circuit. Chase Austin has outdone himself with this installment of political intrigue and manipulation. I am anxiously awaiting the movie and TV series, and wish someone would take that under advisement. Thank you, Chase Austin, for another hold-your-breath-while-turning-the-pages awesome story.
An excellent action thriller with a well written storyline and an outstanding cast of realistic characters. Axel Monk is the deadliest assassin but still has a character that can be appreciated. A page turning adventure with plenty of action, intensity, and suspense. Very exciting story that I highly recommend. Bring on more Axel Monk thrillers!
Received the book for a voluntary and honest ARC review.
Freelancer - Monk, is given the job to assassinate El Tigre but it's more than that. Full of double crosses, moles, and a personal vendetta, Monk has to work through it all. His last encounter with Mockingbird, tops it all.
The book is exciting and is hard to put down. It is an entertaining book to read.
Start of a new series about Axel Monk the deadly assassin called the Freelancer. He has an impossible mission to elimate a Mexican cartel boss with no one to trust. Lots of action with twists and turns. Very good characters and an excellent storyline. I couldn’t put the book down as I wanted to see what happens next. More please Chase.
The plot of the story is quite intriguing and a bit complex. Along with Axel Monk aka The Freelancer, the readers are made to wonder what is exactly going on. This suspense keeps both parties on their toes. At the end, Chase Austine unravels all the mysteries, bringing the story to a beautiful conclusion.
Story about the earlier years of Axel Monk, when he worked for the Conglomerate. Axel has to take out the head of a drug cartel in Mexico, but of course he can trust no one. Real page turner with a lot of action. Top story Chase, hope to read a lot more about Axel.
This intriguing thriller is action-packed, fast-paced, with mystery, suspense, and betrayal. The MC is defined, intelligent, capable, and must suss out who is plotting against him. I enjoyed this entertaining and engaging book. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
Axel Monk the world’s best assassin is tasked with taking out a cartel leader in Mexico. Roller coaster action a mission with numerous twists and turns. A seemingly impossible mission with impossible odds with no one to trust. Only one man can get the job done the Freelancer!!!

I love this book. Full of action & adrenaline , well written, page turner, great characters. Excellent job. I received a copy & voluntarily leaving a review.
Love it! A book full of mystery, suspense, betrayal and a lot of action. With bullets flying all over it's a wonder that Freelancer didn't die a few times. Betrayal from a trusted friend put Freelancer in a predicament. If you're a fan of action and thriller is this book for you. It's a page-turner that you won't be able to put down. Thank you Chase Austin for giving me a free copy and I leave a voluntary review.
Outstanding read. This gripping Thriller will have you on the edge of your seat. This story is full of suspense and betrayal. But who is the betrayer? The suspense is phenomenal. And the betrayer is such a shock. I was like nooo. Monk is tested but it's all part of the job. He is the best. He has earned his name The Freelancer. This is a must read. Chase is a fantastic author. I highly recommend. I can hardly wait for the next book. Yes 🤗
I enjoyed this story, a nice easy read with lots of excitement and nail-biting scenes. Monk is your go-to guy when you need something done, I'm sure we will be seeing him again in the next book. I wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of Monk, so I wonder who will be facing his wrath next!
