The Revenge

Rate this book
How Far Would You Go For Revenge?

I needed his help, and in turn he needed mine.
Before he agreed to take down my ex’s company, he stipulated one clause.
Marriage.
He never told me why.
He never wanted payment.
He just wanted me to agree.
And I did.
I agreed to play the part, until it was no longer playing.
On both our parts.

But it turns out, he needed me for an ulterior motive.
His secrets harboured deep inside of him, and as time went on, I was getting more tangled in his web.
I knew I shouldn’t stay.
I couldn’t keep away.
And worst of all, I found out it was all for revenge.
But that didn’t keep me from loving Nate Spencer.
Or that’s who I thought I fell in love with.

Everything I wanted it in a book and it was served 😭❤️ I am going to miss the illicit love series so much. I’ve been with these amazing characters from the start of their journey and saying bye to them is so hard and bittersweet 😭😭 The series has made me feel every emotion you can imagine.

This book is just amazing 😍 I’m in love with Nate and James. ❤️ Their story is literally the perfect ending to the series. I’m so happy these two got their happy ending. It was all I wanted from the moment I read the prologue and seeing them happy with their family I just made my heart happy. Jake the woman that she is I totally love her. She’s such a sweetheart ❤️❤️

I am so happy for the other characters in the series who are living their best lives and in my head every single one of them will be including Nate and James are living with their families happily even though the series has ended they will forever live in my heart. ❤️ Overall this book was amazing and so was the series. Cant believe I’m saying goodbye to them. 😭❤️

Well what an end to an amazing series. Nate and James shouldn't work, Nate doesn't like being touched and James craves physical connection, but they do work! Nate has lots of deep dark secrets that not even his best friends know about!
I love the banter between the husbands and father in laws. Xavier and Titus are just the funniest pair!
This is a very slow burn.

It was a good read. I'd pretty much solved the story by the end of chapter one. I wasn't completely right, but I was right about some things. It's a very slow burn. I'd recommend it for those who love a slow burn, with a side of romance and mystery. For those who want smut and little to no plot, this might not be for you. I'd strongly suggest reading the other three books in the series before reading this one.

✨E-ARC Review✨

This book is the perfect conclusion to the series😭 I had to take a few minutes to gather my thoughts after finishing because my heart is so full, we really do see everything come full circle in this book and it was just absolutely beautiful to see the characters get their HEA.

Who ever said it’s the quiet ones to watch out for were definitely right as Nate mostly kept in the background for Kaleb, Titus and Keatons books but now it is his time to step out of the shadows and shine.

At the end of the betrayal we met James who was Keaton & Ari’s new nanny and she is the FMC for this book. She is in need of Nate’s services to take down Secure Corp, a company which is run by her ex’s family. Nate is happy to assist but he has one condition and that being that James will be his wife for the next year, and as his wife she will be attending his best friends wedding (YESS KALEB AND CON ARE FINALLY TYING THE KNOT😭).

James and Nate were the perfect fit for one another. Nate was absolutely besotted with James, I mean I have way too many kindle highlights because of it😂 These characters both had their walls held high to protect themselves and it was nice to see as the chapters went on that they both started to lower their walls and open up to one another.

This book is a slow burn and honestly I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The building of the tension between these two was absolute perfection and when that tension came to its peak point and broke well it was utterly chefs kiss.

Also Nates consistency of dropping a ‘my wife’ or ‘my little ember’ any chance he got had me swooning.😫

I think my favourite thing about this series is that it incorporates other couples from different books such as Xavier and Royal (Savage Love) and Sage and Dex (Something Worth Stealing). It is honestly like one big massive family, the banter and teasing amongst them all just had me cackling 😂

It was bittersweet to be saying goodbye to characters I loved and adored so much. It has been quite the journey over the course of the series but all good things must come to an end.

Thank you so much to the author who provided this e-arc for my honest thoughts 💭

Overall rating 4/5⭐️, 2.75/5🌶️

It’s true what they say — the quiet ones really are the freakiest!! 😆

I’ve been genuinely curious about Nate’s character since he was first introduced in The Resentment. So far he’s appeared to be quite reserved and kind/loyal to his friends. That first glimmer we got at the end of The Betrayal when we were first introduced to James, ahh I KNEW there was something there! And man did he catch me by off guard with that dirty mouth, and that surprisingly kinky side of his!! 😏

I overall enjoyed reading The Revenge, however with it being as long as it was, I did feel like there were moments where the plot was getting a bit too lost in it all. The deal struck was initially made in exchange for Nate investigating James’ ex-boyfriend’s company. I would’ve thought this plot line would be a more prominent part of the book, but it seemed to just take a backseat with Connie’s wedding also being involved. Yes there was a lot of will they-won’t they between Nate and James eventually crossing that line, to keep things interesting, but I just personally felt like the actual plot fully began around the 70% mark of the book.

This’ probably one of the slowest slow-burn books I’ve read from Ashlee, so it was an interesting change of pace, that I did enjoy. I did however feel like a few parts of the book were a little too predictable, and I also felt like some sections of the book dragged on a bit. As much as I love getting a few “where are they now” peaks of the Illicit Love couples, as well as the OGs Sage & Dex, Xavier & Royal and of course Reese & Killian, *swoon* 😍, I thought that the inclusion of each of their individual descriptions and their “meet cute” stories took up way too much text in the book

With all that said, I overall enjoyed the book and thought it was a great conclusion to the Illicit Love series! I’m also already super in love with and invested in Brooke and Heidi’s characters, and am desperately hoping that there’s a chance we get a new series just for them!! 💖

Huge thanks to Ashlee for sending over the review copy! x

Okay, buckle up, because The Revenge by Ashlee Rose is a rollercoaster of emotions, secrets, and some seriously swoon-worthy moments. If you're looking for a story that has all the spice, the tension, and the slow-burn chemistry that could set your kindle on fire—this is it!

So, picture this: A girl needing revenge on her ex’s company and a guy who's like "I’ll help you, but you have to marry me." And I’m over here like, “Wait, what?” But of course, she agrees. Why? Well, because when it comes to revenge, sometimes you have to play dirty—and this marriage of convenience is the dirtiest, most entertaining play you’ll ever read. Nate Spencer is charming, mysterious, and, let’s be real, totally irresistible. But he’s got secrets. Big ones. And while I’m out here trying to figure out how deep his "need" for her really goes, she’s falling for him—hard. Like, what even is self-control at this point?

As the slow burn builds, the tension between them makes you want to scream (in the best way), but trust me, the payoff? Worth. Every. Second. This isn’t just a marriage of convenience—there are layers. Layers of secrets, feelings, and revenge that’ll keep you hooked until the very last page.

And the best part? The found family vibes that sneak up on you when you least expect them. I absolutely adore a good found family story, and this one? It hit me right in the feels.

In conclusion, if you like age gaps, secret identities, and a lot of tension mixed with some seriously heart-throbbing romance, The Revenge should absolutely be your next read. It’s fun, it’s dramatic, and it’s full of all the reasons you need to stay up way past your bedtime. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

“I know I am playing with fire, but for her, I would burn into ashes.”
-Nate

“As much as the sex was good... I think? The connection was never there.”
-James

“I think about sticking a stake through his heart just to keep up with the theme of the wedding.”
-Nate

“You're lucky you still have your hands, if I catch you touching her again, even if it's just a fingertip, I'll chop them both off and send them to your dad with a pretty fucking ribbon wrapped around your severed wrists.”
-Nate

Ever since Nate was introduce us in The Resentment, his story is one that I had to know. Also, why was it not a surprise he likes it the way he does? Boy, get it!

Anywho…

The slow burn of this story was delicious. It could be in big part to the shade being thrown between the boys helping prolong the tension between Nate and James. My gasps and laughter had moms staring at me at the park. The guys are dicks to each other, yet they are ready to throw down if anyone insults their family. Every backhand insult that was thrown out had me going back and forth for whose side to be on.

Back to James and Nate. So, so happy they found each other. Who doesn't love a great marriage of convenience story? Especially one where he falls first.

It is sad the series is over. I've been with them since Dear Heart... So for it to be done is going to leave a small crack in my heart. As Ashlee has hinted to, we won't be without them for long. As we know as well, Ashlee likes to find fun ways to put our favorite characters in her other books. That will help mend my broken heart.

This series has been everything! What a ride it was and I’m so sad this is the end but I have been so excited for Nate’s book! So it’s bittersweet
The revenge… where to begin, Nate… this man owns my heart! Parts of him I could relate to, his anxiety and the way it makes him feel was so raw, understandable and emotional. He is such a closed book and it broke my heart but his story is heartbreaking so it’s no surprise he built his walls so high and hesitates to let anyone in but I loved watching him find himself and find his happiness 🥹
The slow burn of these two 😮‍💨 it will have you screaming for them to get together because the tension between them is off the charts!!!! And when they do holy moly…. I mean it’s always the quiet ones am I right 😏😜
I love a marriage of convenience because I love watching them try to deny their feelings and watch those feelings come to a head and this didn’t disappoint. Watching Nate get possessive and jealous had me swooning hard and when he drops the “My Wife” line I am weak!
One of favourite things about this book is the found family and seeing all the couples back together
Nate and James didn’t have easy upbringings so seeing bate with those he made his family is so special because he deserves the world and I adore how James was their missing piece to make their family whole, seeing her just slot into the fold was heartwarming.

As usual Ashlee nails it (pun intended) with the spice!
This book has it all the tension, the chemistry, edge of your seat drama, friendships, spice and unforgettable moments. It’s bittersweet but the series has been wrapped up perfectly.🥹💗

i'm trying to find the words to say that this book was absolutely everything. This book wrecked me in the most beautiful way Nate and James story shattered me, healed me and left me clinging onto every word nothing could have prepared me for how I would feel reading this book

James is everything a fierce woman, strong, full of love character and Nate he is such a kind man patient protective and just phenomenal.Nate's devotion to her was just absolutely everything.
The slow burn in this book was amazing.
The tension it was just magical.

Watching them to find their happiness and seeing them build a life together makes every tear worth it.

This was the final instrument illicit love series i'm saying goodbye to this series, it is bittersweet it has been such an amazing emotional ride

Omg 🥹 I can’t with Nate and James 💗
I had so much fun reading this slow burn, marriage of convenience, and found family story! It was amazing to see this usually quiet and reserved man be so gentle and caring towards his wife. We get to see him in his element and get to experience how he is a man of words of affirmations. He constantly makes sure to let James know that she is beautiful, smart, and worthy. But he does harbor secrets that could jeopardize what he and James have.

James went to Nate in hopes of getting help to uncover the embezzlement that her ex and his father are partaking in and ends up agreeing to marriage. She has insecurities that don’t let her open herself up to many but that changes with Nate and his found family. Love seeing how they welcome her and it was fun to see her continuously tease Nate. I really enjoyed this book and loved getting glimpses of the rest of the guys and their families.

The Revenge - Illicit Series -

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️

Ashlee Rose just knows how to end a series and what an end that was to the Illicit Series.

Nate and James were just pure perfection we loved everything about them.

James was everything we love in a FMC she was fierce, strong and full of love.
Nate is such a loving kind man who is also very protective and possessive towards James.

We loved that the other characters from the series was in the book and that we got to have more on them and there happily ever afters.

We are sad to say goodbye to the series but also looking forward to what is next from Ashlee.

If you’re looking for a series that has all the feels then we definitely recommend reading this one.

Ashlee once again you’ve smashed it.

What a way to end an amazing series!! The Revenge is the fourth book in the Illicit Love Series. I recommend reading this series in order.

I was looking forward to reading Nate’s story and it didn’t disappoint. Nate is quiet and keeps himself to himself, so much so that even his friends don’t know about his relationship with James.

This is a slow burn but once you get there, the spice is so worth it.

I loved how so many previous characters from Ashlee’s books made an appearance in this one. The banter between the husbands was hilarious.

I’ve really enjoyed this series and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next.

Thank you to Ashlee for sending me an ARC copy.

What a way to end the series!!!

I’ve been waiting for Nate’s story it did not disappoint 🥰

This is a slow burn - age gap - marriage of convenience - secret identity - found family romance. This is the final book in the series, I would strong recommend reading the series in order.

Nate is the mysterious quiet character of the group. Always in the background and has his secrets. Too many. Some that the boys - Kaleb, Titus and Keaton- know nothing about. So when Keaton’s son’s nanny, James, approaches Nate to help her, help take down her cruel ex’s company, he’s only happy to help. In exchange for one thing, to be married for one whole year. Another secret. But all was about to be revealed…..

James and Nate are another brilliant couple from Ashlee’s world. Both strong, kind, sexy and sassy!! Nate is also just swoon worthy ‘My Wife’ 🥵 the spice in this story wow!!! Steamed up my glasses!!!

I loved that so many of Ashlee’s characters from her other work joined in this final book. The humour in this had me laughing out loud, especially when Xavier is around. A special shout out to Killian too. Can’t wait to see who and where they will turn up next.

This book series has been a wild ride and it just had its perfect ending.

Congratulations Ashlee. Another amazing story from an amazing author. 🩷🩷

Nate, the man of many secrets. Yes this is the last book in the Illicit Love series and it is filled with secrets but also old friends that have the happy life that Nate would love to have.

James, the woman that is his obsession. The woman he made a deal but also the woman that now is is wife.

It is a slow burn and this is what I love with Ashlee, she writes short quick reads but also thick slow burn romance. That has feelings and also she make sure that the character will grab you and makes sure that you really get to know them.

What a way to end this series?!
Nate and James were absolute perfection! 👨‍🍳💋.
Their connection was there right from the start, and seeing them recognise the want and need was literally amazing to read.
Being back in this world with the whole group was great to read and James slotted in so well.
Of course a few twists and turns chucked in. And as usual with an @ashleeroseauthor read the spice was spicing! Another perfect read!

The Revenge is the final book in the Illicit Love series. I have read all the books and this series is one of my most favourites! In Revenge it’s Nate and James’ story. Once I started I couldn’t stop! Just pure brilliance which is nothing short of what you get from Ashlee’s writing. Very sad it’s now over though

Nate & James were perfect!! This book takes you on a bit more of a rollercoster than the others with the mystery subplot running through it. The push and pull between these two was there from the beginning, as always with an Ashlee book it was full of emotion, and the spice was spicing!!

All.the.feelings!
A fake marriage, a quiet man with secrets, and a love that slowly, stubbornly grows in the shadows of revenge.
Ashlee Rose delivered the tension, the emotion, and the kind of slow unravel that keeps you thinking.
And getting to see familiar faces from earlier books was the best kind of surprise.
Ashlee’s world just keeps getting richer and I’m not ready to leave it anytime soon.
While this is a stand alone, I would suggest reading Dear Heart You Screwed Me and the other books in the Illicit Love Series.

Nate and James were so much fun to read. I was anticipating Nate's story from the beginning, the quiet ones are always the most fun to get into and Nate was true to it. The burn was so infuriatingly, deliciously slow that I thought I was going to combust, never mind the characters. But once we got there, it was one of the most satisfying "F It" moments I have ever read. I have loved the friendships and family that have developed over this series and I am so sad to see it come to an end but they each got their HEA and an amazing story.
