oh, this is exactly what i thought my teenage years/summers would be like.
despite my apprehensions, this was not too cringe or cliche—i actually had a BLAST.
since you've been gone follows emily, the quintessential shy introvert who has been largely influenced by her effortlessly cool best friend, sloane, yet hasn’t experienced nearly as much as her (real!). just as they’re about to embark on what they called “the most epic summer ever!!”, sloane vanishes without explanation. then, out of nowhere, emily receives a letter: a bucket list of seemingly random and bold tasks. thus begins her summer of stepping out of her comfort zone, driven by the hope that these tasks might lead her to sloane somehow.
you get:
-tolerable friends—genuinely enjoyable characters who take part in spontaneous and amusing adventures!!
-naturally, some romance!! friends to lovers too, might i add.
-multiple playlists!! ON IPODS!! featuring oldies and nostalgic 2000s music curated by frank and emily!! INCLUDING BILLY JOEL, HALL & OATES, THE BEATLES, MIDNIGHT CITY, AND THE CURE?? HELL YEAH. the love interest, frank, also made a playlist of songs that remind him of her, where the beginning letters of each song spelled out emily multiple times: ie. everybody talks, makes me lose control (by an artist she introduced him to), in my life, let’s go surfing, young love—which is actually adorable? me when??
-flashbacks that are genuinely fun to read!! lots of drama as well!!
-a touch of mystery—sloane’s absence creates a subtle tension throughout the book!!
-ROADTRIPS!
-bucket lists!! the main one including: skinny dip, sneak into a club under a fake id to watch a band play, work at an ice cream shop, sleep under the stars, dance until dawn, and wear a backless dress to an event!!
-FOOD DESCRIPTIONS (pizza, ice cream, hot chocolate, some candy)!!
-a cute ending scene that’s not too corny/saccharine!!
i stayed up far too late to finish this. thank you morgan matson for making me believe i’ll like YA books again and making the little girl in me happy by letting her live vicariously through these characters. the title also reminds me of kelly clarkson. this book gives me the urge to make a huge bucket list, get a job at an ice cream shop, have sleepovers with my friends and eat junk food, go stargazing, and go on runs every day, listening to my playlists full of obscure oldies and nostalgic 2000’s music—while dancing to them. i don’t think i’ll ever be too old for books like these.
reading this felt like that one remix of club can’t handle me and supercut (nostalgia for what you have and haven’t experienced at it’s finest— but also: endorphins, if you haven’t heard it, LISTEN TO IT). BRING BACK 2014-2019 SUMMERS, I BEG. i certainly wouldn’t be opposed to experiencing this book in real life.
