She was a brave and ruthless woman, powerful, terrifyingly lethal, and with a dark and twisted past but she was no monster.
If there's one thing that I need in life- it's Greek myth! I love it so much like give me any story, spin it anyway I just know I'll enjoy, it's such a twisted world but the stories in it our very rich and this book cultivated a perfect story. The writing for a debut novel was good. I had a few problems with the pacing which affected my rating but it was overall very enjoyable and refreshing to read. This spin on Medusa was also very invigorating. I always wanted Medusa's redemption arc like I desperately needed it so when I saw this author was writing it I was the most excited for it and for the most part it did deliver. What didn't work for me tho was pacing because that took a lot of my time and the second thing was the plotline being dragged a bit but other than that it was really well done.
Medusa's humanity after everything that she has been through showcased to never judge a book by it's cover. I really liked her humanity and I really liked the way her story unraveled, her trauma was explored well and I really enjoyed reading her scenes with Perseues where how she started with being so mistrusting and then how it transitioned into trust and then friendship ands then love and I also love how her victims were always criminals or rapists and that she didn't kill for "revenge against the gods." Perseus himself was so kind and respectful struggled between killing an innocent and saving her mother but I always love it when the main hero goes against a corrupt god/king it's very fun to read and his perspective itself was very enjoyable.
Perseus and Medusa together were a force to be reckoned with. Both were able to understand it each other and both knew how to deal with each other. This knowledge and understanding slowly formed the bond of love and the whole process of it was really enjoyable to read, It was enemies to lovers but take it a notch down, it was sent to kill her but fell for her done right!! The end part where Medusa screams at Athena for Perseus was my favourite scene of the book. This was the romance I was seeking and I was kept satisfied at the end.
Overall, a really fun experience!

I’m not a huge Greek mythology fan but I ended up loving this. This is a retelling where Perseus doesn’t kill Medusa and they end up falling in love. I only know the basics of the Medusa myth but this was easy to follow and understand. I really liked Medusa's character arc and seeing her healing journey.
Slow burn, true enemies to lovers turn reluctant allies. The development of the relationship was well done and I liked their dynamic - Medusa being the morally grey one and Perseus being patient and gentle. I loved the way Perseus was with Medusa, especially with her PTSD and panic attacks.
Then there's the extra romance between Kleos and Andromeda. Reverse grumpy X sunshine - He's a big, giant golden retriever and she’s more reserved.
↳ I can’t wait to see more of them in book 2!!
Overall this was a great debut and I enjoyed reading this. This was a story filled with female rage, revenge, redemption, romance and healing. It was well written, fast paced and I loved the Romantasy element.

A retelling like no other I’ve read before! The story of Medusa and Perseus from a different perspective: raw, honest, full of female rage but also healing and building trust with yourself but also others again after trauma.
I absolutely loved this book! I was lucky to receive an ARC from Lara Reed and I read this within a few days! The characters are so well fleshed out and the story flows beautifully. I love how Medusa was portrayed and the complexities of her emotions and how they changed throughout her journey were incredible! I think my favourite chapter (at the moment this will likely change on a re-read bc they’re all that good) is chapter 45) without spoiling anything I believe the way she was able to open up here was so important and the lead up to it was perfect.
I cannot recommend this book enough! Not only for those who love Greek mythology (but you will love it for that even more) but everyone who likes to read women centred stories that show that dealing with your trauma can take on different forms and that all emotions are valid and important.

what an interesting retelling!! the story has a strong plot, that is well paced, and easy to follow. I think the author did a great job integrating her own twist into the book and making it really fun (and heartbreaking) to read.
I really related to Medusa as so many people do. It is so important for us to have stories like this to demonstrate what healing from the pain of others’ wrongdoings can look like. my favorite part of the story was reading about Medusa’s origin and character arc throughout the story.
if you like books like the song of achilles, i definitely recommend dipping your toes into lara reed’s debut <3

(2.5) I can see that if this becomes a series it has a lot of potential and I really like the premise. Overall I enjoyed it but I think the author probably just needs to work a little on less telling and more showing, the reader can do the work in understanding what’s being said with out it being spelled out.

Oh my God! I'm in love with this book. It's truly a book I loved; it deserves 5 stars! The only reason I'd lower it to 4 stars is because I need to know what happens to Kleos. It's not a question, it's a plea. I NEED to know.
It took me a while to read the book, but not because of the book itself, but more for personal reasons, because once I had the time, I finished it in 2 or 3 days.
Meduna's evolution and her relationship with Perseus, how she went from not trusting men to opening up and sharing her reality. It's so beautiful.

I was lucky to get an eArc of this incredible retelling of Perseus and Medusa!
I don’t read greek mythology retellings often, but this book had me hooked from the first page on!
One thing I would have wanted more of was to have more chapters in Medusa’s POV because I LOVED her. I loved her story and the way her character progressed and developed.
Especially the last couple of chapter had me sitting anxiously. So much happened! Overall I loved how fast paced the book was and there was always something happening but there was still time for different relationships to develop over the course of the book!

What an absolutely phenomenal twist on Medusa! I have always been a bit of a Greek mythology nerd (Percy Jackson kids REPRESENT), so I knew going into this book that I will absolutely devour it.
The author perfectly encapsulated feminine rage. Medusa, our FMC, has been killing sailors for quite some time, so much so that Polydectes (tyrant king) has put a bounty on her head. Perseus, after being robbed, is short on this year’s astronomical tithe. When he goes to beg the awful king for forgiveness, he is given two options, either allow his mother to become a concubine to this disgusting king, or bring back the head of the Medusa gorgon. Perseus obviously goes for the gorgon, but Medusa is so far from what he was expecting.
The dynamics between Perseus and Medusa throughout this book was amazing! From enemies, to captor/captive, to reluctant allies of sorts, to touch him/her and die. I LOVED these two so much. Medusa was such a badass, I love her so much and would die for her.

I loved this retelling so much! The writing was beautiful, the pacing was perfect and the characters were so well written. I’m an absolute sucker for mythology and I love a slowburn romance so this was the perfect book for my tastes. There was action, there was rage, there were meddling gods, what more could I ask for!

random ku read let’s go!! this was kinda camp i was locked in. this is for the percy jackson lovers fr. the writing wasn’t the best and there were like six more perspectives than we needed, but i was entertained. when ur man threatens to burn olympus down with you 😍🐍

greek mythology has a special place in my heart. it can be captivating or grotesque that leaves a profound ground for the fictional literature. i know the myth about Perseus slaying (yay, you do you, Percy LMAO) Medusa and how TRAGIC her fate was (hashtag i hate Poseidon). so, let's explore the world of retelling:
the story follows Medusa who's literally drowning ships and turning men into a stone. Medusa's fate threads intertwined with Perseus's. he is promised to kill the infamous monster in exchange for his monster's freedom. after meeting Medusa, Perseus refuses the kill her seeing her not as a monster but a being that deserves a second chance. however, he forgets that everything has consequences...
the way the plot was unfolding is so delicate and full of emotions. it takes time for them to bond and see each other differently. she's 'prejudiced' to hate Perseus due to him being a man (i mean they're the worst but there are some of them that are a sent apology for the rest x).
the side characters and the romance between them was so CUTE !!! (the ending felt me some questions...DISTURBING ones)
i've read this book in a day. i just simply couldn't put it down and it's 60 CHAPTERS total. the ending was emotional and i felt incredibly PROUD (but i'm not gonna say why...not yet).
'Crown of serpents' made me want to rewatch all movies that are connected to greek mythology.
i 1000% recommend to read this book, it felt like a a breath of fresh air after my time of being stuck in a spooky season <3

I appreciated the differences between the original myth quite a lot especially the part where medusa doesn't die and you know Perseus actually sounds like a fun person to be around. I really like how we at first all thought (What Perseus thought of her) that Medusa was just a mindless beast, where in reality she's actually a woman, a scorned woman filled with rage, revenge and desire to make her assailant suffer a fate worse than death.
Perseus (or at least this version of him) is one of the funniest men I've read of inside Greek mythology and one of the nicest too! Another great thing was how his relationship with Medusa progressed (plus they're so cute together) and how they slowly learned to trust each other.
And last thing - I need more Andromeda x Kleos. That ending calls for book 2, I need to know what will happen to them now after the whole Perseus x Medusa story has come to an end.

I absolutely adored the writing style. It’s so lyrical and beautiful, making the story feel almost poetic.
If you love slow burn, enemies to lovers with the who did this to you trope, a fierce FMC radiating divine feminine rage, and overall an action-packed story about empowerment and personal growth, I’m sure you’ll love this one.
I also loved the dynamic between the characters—it was well-layered and had just the right amount of tension. Plus, the book offers a diverse range of characters, enhancing the story even more.
That being said, I strongly recommend checking the trigger warnings beforehand. The book explores heavy themes like victim-blaming, sexualization, assault, and grief. These topics are handled in a way that fits the story, but they might be difficult for some readers.
As a series opener, Crown of Serpents sets up an intriguing world, and I can’t wait to see where the story goes next. Lowkey hoping we dive even deeper into the dynamics of the Olympian gods—and their world.🥰

I’ve always been a sucker for a Greek mythology retelling. I loved the progression of Perseus’ and Medusa’s relationship. It was a true enemies to lovers situation. I also enjoyed seeing Medusa’s progression over the book. It was a story full of female rage and revenge.
While I had a hard time getting into the first couple chapters, once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down and flew through it in a couple days! It was fast paced and full of action.
I can’t wait to read the next book!

This is a beautifully written story about loss, love and hope. The writing grips you from the very first page.
Crown of Serpents is a retelling of Medusa and Perseus. From the start you get a very detailed background on both characters. It shows the strength and courage they both have whilst battling emotional and physical turmoil. Throughout the book you can see the vast change in character development which makes you fall in love more with the characters. I really don't want to give anything else away in this review as I can see this book blowing up and becoming a firm favourite of many readers, as it is now one of mine.

Some of you may know that I also run a film page on Instagram, and when asked way back in 2020 what movie I would make if I had unlimited money and creative freedom, my answer was the true story of Medusa. The idea is purely an exercise in wish fulfilment, to see a wronged woman who the stories have condemned and vilified know justice and find peace with herself, to her standards.
Crown of Serpents channels that energy, depicting the Medusa that popular blockbusters ignore: a woman who was abused, assaulted, and spurned by the very goddess she pledged her life too, and who now seeks her vengeance against predatory men, and those who enable them. Her plans are, naturally, disturbed when hunky, heroic Perseus arrives, and together they form an uneasy alliance.
There are multiple compelling characters, but Medusa’s POVs made my blood sing and surge. What a heartbreakingly faithful telling of her story, one that sees her address her trauma and assimilate all of the sides of herself into one. The gods may not love a mad woman, an angel of death and vengeance, with a soft, human heart, and a will to protect others, but I sure do.

I’ve read plenty of retellings, many of which involve Medusa taking back her power. This one is a little bit different for me.
We all know the story. Medusa is a mortal born to two immortals with two immortal sisters. She is cast out, and seeks out Athena to avoid being forced into marriage and child birth with Poseidon. Poseidon rapes her and Athena “gifts” her with her powers , but the other acolytes cast her out and she becomes known as a monster.
Okay so this all happens in this book, but it’s an interesting take. Medusa does start off a bit feral in this book, but Perseus is more of a man in this book than in traditional Greek retellings.
The plot is fairly true to the myth with some major exceptions. I really appreciate having a man that isn’t total trash in a retelling. I’m all for female rage and power (and there is plenty of that in this book), but it’s also refreshing having a man who isn’t a complete piece of 💩. Perseus actually is a really fun character to follow and always up for a challenge. I also appreciated the side romance of Kleos and Andromeda (although their cliffhanger is going to be one of many banes of my existence). This is a fun journey, with a dash of romance, plenty of violence, and a bit of retribution. This should be a fun series to read with Medusa being such a strong willed woman unafraid to challenge anyone.

Medusa has always had a little piece of my heart since I was a child so I was so excited to receive an ARC of Crown of Serpents.
The book is a much-deserves reclaiming of the Medusa myth that focuses on her story with Perseus, the demi-god. Without spoilers, it’s a slow-burn tale with tons of tension and excellent character development. The female rage alone was enough to keep me engaged, practically shouting “Yes, girl!” as the story unfolds. You will 100% have a “good for her” moment, if you’re a femme. All in all, I highly recommend this book if you love mythology, ancient history, enemies to lovers, and a kick-ass FMC. 🩷

Crown of Serpents is an alternate retelling of the Greek myth of Perseus, the son of Zeus and Medusa, the cursed gorgon.
This book truly blew my mind. I didn't know what to expect but I'd say this exceeded any kind of expectations I would have. Lara created an immersive world within the Greek mythology aspects and the amazing world-building and dedication towards it is amazing.
It provided a different perspective, mainly what would happen if Perseus didn't slay Medusa but rather took her as a captive. It was a really fun maritime exploration in an Ancient Greek setting.
The SA theme was very well handled throughout the book. It felt very real reading about it. PTSD, trauma and healing journey were very well explored and the feminine rage towards the end was the cherry on the top.
I loved the multiple perspectives and characters throughout. At some point, even the side characters steal the spotlight and they're really fun. I enjoyed the portrayal of all platonic relationships, the friendship. The strong bonds throughout the book made it even more emotional to finish it.
The ending had me hooked so bad that I could not put it down. Twists after twists and sudden actions made it even more compelling. The feminine rage was well worth it.
There is space for a sequel and if there will be one, I will be continuing the series!
