Midsummer Lights – A Scandinavian Second-Chance Romance
At sixty-five, Gertrud thought her story was already written. After the quiet loss of her husband, she settled into gentle routines in the Swedish village of Dalberg—gardening, baking, keeping company with memories. Her days are steady, safe… and achingly silent.
But everything shifts one midsummer when an old letter is found, a family from America arrives seeking their roots, and a kind-eyed craftsman named Peter reminds her that the heart never grows too old for love.
As the village gathers around midsummer bonfires and long-held secrets rise to the surface, Gertrud must cling to the safety of solitude, or step bravely into the warmth of belonging, healing, and perhaps even romance.
Because sometimes, the brightest seasons of life begin when you least expect them.
Perfect for fans of Jenny Colgan, RaeAnne Thayne, and anyone who believes it’s never too late to begin again, Midsummer Lights is a tender, heartwarming novella about love, heritage, and the quiet magic of a Scandinavian summer.
Swedish Midsummer: A heritage companion filled with stories, traditions, and memories. (Swedish Seasons series) Part of: Swedish Seasons series (3 books) Many years ago several of my family members from the United States traveled to Sweden in June for a family reunion. We were there for the celebration of Midsummer. It was the first time for the US family to experience it, the foods, the white night and the fellowship of our Swedish family. All the experience Ms Warren wrote about in this book we witnessed for the first time. I loved this book as it brought back all the sweet memories that our Swedish family exposed us to about our culture. I saved my flower crown for a long time. If you are of Swedish descent you should gather a family group and read this aloud. If you are in a Swedish book club I also recommend reading it together because it is so personal that I believe it should be read that way. This is an excellent book to own and keep. It is five stars from me!
Midsummer Lights: Tales of Dalberg The whole series Ms Warren wrote about the great Swedish immigration to United States in the late 1800s comes to a climax in this book. Each book is wonderful and I encourage you to read all of them in order. This book is focused on an older widow named Gertrud. She is inquisitive, warm, elegant and down to earth. What made me love this book was the slow and respectful approach Gertrud and a woodworking handyman around her age approach a mystery and each other. It is quite beautiful to feel the emotions that they work through. They had both lost spouses and thought they were too old to feel love again. I loved the emotion it brought to me the reader. You will too!
A tender, beautifully written story of love, healing, and second chances. Midsummer Lights captures the charm of small-town Sweden and the magic of rediscovering joy after loss. Heartfelt, cozy, and full of hope it’s a perfect read for anyone who believes it’s never too late to begin again.
