Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book. I wish I had realized it would be a cliffhanger.
I had a lot of trouble getting into this book due to the absurdity of Annalise Miller becoming an indentured servant to Sinclair Whittier because of an accusation that she destroyed a lab on her college campus. There was no evidence, and Lise quickly agreed to his suggestion.
Then, I started to recognize the many parallels to a Beauty and the Beast: a sickly father, an ill-tempered, somewhat reclusive man (billionaire) with secrets who acts like a beast, a cook/housekeeper who treats Lise like a guest, a section of the house that's off-limits, and Lise trying to negotiate time to see her father.
Once I recognized what the author was doing, and once I was able to treat it as a fairytale rather them a modern romance, it became much more enjoyable. And then it ended. I hate cliffhangers; they have a tendency to put me in a bad mood. That's why I've taken off a star. And I considered giving this book only 3 stars, based on my initial feelings about it. But once I recognized the theme, I was able to perceive the cleverness of the storytelling.
