Create an invention worthy enough to save the court from being zapped to dust. Buy the music hall before it is destroyed. When two dreams converge, will it be enough to ensure the Lightning Court survives another year?
Gifted with the power of Lightning and Sight, Piora is determined to prove to her mother—the minister of the Lightning Court—she can win the Undertaking so she doesn’t have to follow in her mother’s footsteps. However, time is running short, and she has still not come up with the perfect invention idea.
Abandoned at a young age, Izyk has only had his music, his friend Ludwik, and the dream to one day buy the music hall. Unfortunately, it is being threatened to be knocked down by the bank, and he still doesn’t have the funds to buy it.
When Piora and Izyk keep bumping into each other, they spark a deal: Izyk will help inspire new ideas for inventions if Piora promises to give half of the cash prize to Izyk so he can buy the music hall.
Of Lightning and Topaz is the third installment in the Weather Court Gem series. Each standalone novella follows a different couple in their respective court (Snow, Thunder, Lightning, Rain, & Sun), each faced with the challenge of following their heart as the fate of their court's power rests in their hands.

I liked the FMC and how she was seeking validation was relatable. she was smart and kindhearted. the MMC was playful and sunshiny despite his rough circumstances. Their relationship and the ending felt kinda rushed . I'd have liked it if it was a bit longer
“Someone who is giftless is not someone who is empty. We are just as important as those with powers.” (ch 15)
This novella was a (bitter)sweet read... different. Interesting take. It's part of a series, but can be read as a standalone.
Piora, gifted with lightning and sight, didn't want to conform to the fate that her mother prophesied for her. She wanted to create something for the Undertaking invention competition that would help prove that there was more in store for her in life. That she deserved a fate of her choosing. But would her choice lead to her losing one or both of her gifts?
Izyk, giftless, wanted to buy the music hall, but all he had was his music and a magical bird. His efforts to earn enough money were proving futile.
After several chance encounters, the two form a plan to work together to spark inspiration. To get what they both desire.
This didn't end how I expected. It took a different turn, twist, if you may. Not the type of HEA as one would have expected, and perhaps rides a bit on the morally grey spectrum. Still mulling it over. I think I would have wanted more revenge and justice than what was dished out, LOL. Maybe that's my hang-up here. But I get it.
Uh I was a blubbering mess reading this (IYKYK). I loved Piora and Izyk. Like so much. The message in this book also really made me emotional. That it doesn’t matter who you are, you are worthy.
Thank you K.C. Silver and Luna Literary for the arc. I loved it so much.
Sometimes, when I read a book that seeps under my skin, it’s difficult to put into words coherent comments about said book. Of Lightening and Topaz, the third installment of KC Silver’s Weather Court Gem series, is one such book. This romantasy takes place in the Lightening Court during the lead-up to the Undertaking, a competition of inventions to appease the Weather Gods and keep the court from being zapped to dust.
This is the story of Piora, gifted with both the powers of Sight and Lightening. The daughter of the Minister of the Court, Piora has spent her life desperate to please everyone around her. She is determined to win the Undertaking and not follow in her mother's footsteps. This is also the story of Izyk, abandoned as a child and giftless in the eyes of the court, but full of music, passion, and brilliance. The two meet by seeming happenstance, and through their connection and eventual love affair, they each uncover their true powers - and are able to stand in themselves and fulfill their true destinies.
This is the first book I have read by KC Silver, so this 3rd installment was my introduction to the Weather Court Gem series. It is absolutely a stand-alone novel and I don’t feel as though I missed anything by not reading the previous books. However, I am now purchasing them because my stars, this world is amazing. I love a gaslamp world and Silver’s Weather Courts are fascinating, mysterious, and enchanting. With elegant language we are wrapped in a complete idea of what life is like in the Lightening Court are given enticing hints about other courts. I can’t wait to travel to all the Weather Courts and learn about their agreements with the Weather Gods. Creating a mythology is a difficult task, and Silver does a remarkable job with it.
Piora and Izyk are fantastic characters - both layered and complex and completely believable. Their connection is deep and irrefutable and their struggles are believable and heart-breaking. I love a story where characters do not need each other to become their best selves, but their connections enhance and quicken their journeys to become their best selves. Their chemistry is palpable and pulse-quickening, and the dangers they each face separately and together are desperate and exciting. The commentary on art vs invention, on religious interpretation, and on finding your own purpose are so timely and incisive it is nearly painful.
I absolutely adored this story and wish I could read it again for the first time. I will have to settle for exploring the other Weather Court Gem books and then re-reading this one. I’m not ready to be done with this world. I may never be.
I received an advance review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.
My first read from this author and I am intrigued. The world this story is set in sounds so interesting that it had me added her other novellas to my already long TBR. The author packed a lot of storyline into very few pages without it feeling rushed. I really liked that as the story went on, that the FMC grew into herself with her confidence and how she wanted to live her life outside the influence of her mother. I thought the MMC had a interesting backstory and how it shaped him to become the man he is now. I really liked that even with the outcome, they both found the way to be with each other and achieve their new dreams. An interesting short read for someone who wants to be lost in a little fantasy world.
I enjoyed this one. Short and sweet and overall enjoyable to read. This book has a very interesting and unique fantasy world and it made me interested in the other books in the series.
I am absolutely in love with Izyk and I hate Piora’s mom with a burning passion. The characters in general are a bit simple but they manage to still have beautiful character development in the story.
My only real complaint is I wish we had a little bit more of the happily ever after. I’m always sad when everything resolves itself and they’re gonna live happily and then it ends without us getting to experience it.
This is the third book in the Weather Court Gem series. It follows Piora, an inventor and Izyk, a pianist. They both need inspiration, so they make a deal.
It was an enjoyable book. I liked how Piora became more confident and took her own decisions. Also, I loved how Piora's and Izyk's relationship grew up. They started as strangers, and in the end, they became something beautiful. They were willing to sacrifice everything for their love.

While this is the third book in the Weather Court Gem novella series, this can be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed this novella! It was short, sweet, and held all the turmoil of a longer book without boring the reader. I got to know Piora and Izyk and care for both of them throughout the book. There was a part of their relationship that happened almost in the blink of an eye and I thought I had skipped a page, but overall it was a wonderful story.
Thank you to K.C Silver and The Book Besties Collective for an ARC! Out April 24th!
3.75! I really enjoyed this. For a novella type book, I felt like K.C. Silver was able to fit so much world building and character development into the pages. I adore our main couple, but I especially loved the sacrifice each gave to the relationship. I definitely want to read the first two books in the series, and explore the different courts! Highly recommend!
This book so far is probably my favorite of the weather court series because my god, I adored Izyk and Piora 😭😭😭
Each Undertaking that's happened so far in this series has been so brutal but this one that happens in the lightening court??? Takes the cake for the most mentally messed up, especially for out fmc Piora.
Izyk Izyk Izyk.... the way I wish I could've heard more about how good you are with your hands you talented musician you 🤭
An invention to save the Lightning Court. Or saving the historic music hall from being torn down. One of these dreams would have to be enough. One will win, one will lose.
Piora and Izyk are adorable leads even though they could have been fleshed more. The story has an amazing premise, I just hoped the execution would have been a little better. I enjoyed the book alot, nonetheless, and look forward to more such stories from the author.
***ARC Review*** The following is my own honest opinion:
This is the third book in The Weather Court Gem series, but the first one that I've read as it can be read as a standalone. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will be looking into the rest of the series. It's a short but great read that invoked my emotions. I loved Izyk and Piora and I wanted to raise hands with Piora's mom. Overall great read!
This was a short, sweet and charming story about love, following your own path, and acceptance. I really appreciated the magical elements and the character development. This was a cozy and relaxing read that left me smiling at the end. I was really rooting for the MCs HEA! Thank you for the advanced copy!
This is the third Weather Court novella, and I have all three because they are just a perfect little dip into an interesting fantasy world and I love to compare the different courts and how they are set up. I enjoyed these characters, their journeys, and how it all came together! Truly unique!
This is a book worth the read. The lesson is that everyone is worthy. This is a must-read for sure. it did make me cry, but those tears were worth it. and it's a quick read!
This was a quick and enjoyable read with a great blend of romance and fantasy. Piora and Izyk made a great team! This is a solid pick if you’re looking for a fast-paced fantasy.
First off, a big thank you to K.C. Silver and Luna Literary for the ARC! I appreciate your trust in me.
After reading the two previous books I was delighted to dive back into this series, especially with hearing the premise! I think this world is my favorite of the courts by far, and I enjoyed how different it was from the other two in terms of the class caste system and their undertaking task. I also thought the tie-ins to the other courts felt natural, and it was nice to see them acknowledged as the series goes on.
Piora and Izyk's relationship dynamic is my favorite of the three couples too, though it's by a small margin (I like them all). The comfort and support they provide for each other is heartwarming, and it made the story all the cozier. Their journeys to accepting themselves as they are and that they're good enough despite what others say makes them a good fit.
Despite their short lengths, I think this is a great series to get a small dose of fantasy before hopping over to your next novel. I'm looking forward to the next installment!
This is my second book of this series and I loved it as much as the first. The relationship between the two MCs was so beautiful and I definitely think Potek needs a book because that bird had me! I really was an emotional mess during this, and I was gasping, giggling, and on the verge of tears more than once. I really loved this one, and I hope there is more because I can't get enough of them.
