it’s okay. Not my Favorite.

*spoilers*

I am a huge Sally Vixen fan and even though overall I enjoyed this story it was not my favorite. The story line is good but there are enough small pieces that added up to me not enjoying it as much as others. First, our hero’s reason for marrying the duchess is weak. However I love the fact that from the beginning he wasn’t trying to play it off as a “marriage of convenience”. Second, the duchess, while overall had a tough attitude, her continual denial of her father was borderline obnoxious. The reason for the brother’s disappearance and reappearance was crinchy. I’m not into cougar stories and the fact that they are going to ride off into the sunset and live as adulterers was gross. Also, was no one else bothered by the fact that for years he had been a friend to our heroine but secretly bopping the mom??? Was he really ever there to be her fried?? I was outraged on her behalf. I can see there being other stories in this series and really if we never hear about his brother and her mother again I would be super okay with that. Spice level was just meh - she has written better. Overall I will continue to read this if it becomes a series but if you’re a first time Sally Vixen fan I’d start with a different series.

I was given an advanced copy in return for an honest review, but I purchased it in order to be fair.

Pros: The leads are well defined and really interesting. The female lead, Louise, is a bit of a bluestocking and has aspirations beyond motherhood and hostessing for a husband. Christian is a Duke with deep damage from his stormy childhood as the son of a housemaid who became a duchess. The story is sort of a revenge plot with a small amount of mystery thrown in. There is a goodly amount of instalove too. The $ex is truly smokin hot with just a little purple prose.

Cons: The mystery part is really muddled and confusing as well as unsatisfying. Louise's father, who is the catalyst for this whole story, is a mustache twirling bad guy, but also a kind of red herring around the mystery part. Again, there seemed to be some confusion here. There was also a throwaway scene eith Christian's former mistress that went nowhere. I kept thinking it would pop up later, but nope.

The relationship between Louise and Christian was good. I liked their interactions despite it sometimes veering into an arch British wordplay scene. The instalove thing truly wasn't necessary to me. The whole story takes place in about a week, but it might have benefited from taking place over a longer period of time. If you like the instance trope, you'll be fine with this.

Overall it was a good read, definitely superior to a lot of what gets churned out these days.

The MMC just seems to be an ass. They both seem TSTL. I don’t know why she fell in love with him. His confession of love was difficult for me to believe. She also couldn’t believe her father was a bad person with all the evidence in front of her? Her father beat her mother, gambled away all their money, their home and gambled her. But, she couldn’t believe he set her house on fire. Okay. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Actions speak volumes - not so cruel………

This was a marriage of convenience that happened when a Duke intervened when he heard a father attempting to sell his daughter to cover a gambling debt. The daughter is resentful and cold and angry with the H. The characters were well developed because they kept repeating the same patterns. Some of the repetitions could have been used for other things. There was an interesting twist to the duke’s history that made this MOC trope a little unique. I did like the main couple together once they stopped playing games with one another and acknowledged their feelings. There were a lot of subplots and issues in the story that didn’t always seem to have sufficient backstory or explanation.

Very enjoyable read with an intriguing plot filled with unexpected twists.

Louise and Christian's story is based on a marriage of convenience which begins from revenge and greed.

Lady Louise's father is a gambler, one with a lot of debt owed to many. He decides to use his daughter in the worst way, he offers her in a bet.

Christian has had past dealings with Louise's father. He wants revenge and he plans on getting it, through Louise.

He takes the gamble and wins Louise. They are married shortly after.

Both H&H are great characters. I really liked them, they were both very strong people that had been through a lot of turmoil, much at the hands of their own fathers. Louise and Christian had a lot in common and that helps bring them together.

Their relationship starts out on non romantic terms but there is an unmistakable attraction between them from the beginning that not only develops into a passionate relationship but one with much deeper feelings.

I loved the pace of the book as much as the characters and the plot. It flowed well, kept you engaged, and the HEA developed in a realistic manner.

I received an ARC, all opinions expressed are my own.

This is the first title in the Duke Wars series by Sally Vixen. It’s a great start! Duke Christian wins Lady Louise in a card game. The lady’s father is a terrible gambler and in addition to losing his daughter on a poor bet, he also loses his London townhouse. Louise is stunned to learn of her fate and Christian is very cold and arrogant toward her. They marry and although it’s a marriage of convenience, Christian tells Louise he will claim her in seven days. There is a mystery within the plot as well. Christian’s brother has disappeared and he thinks Louise’s father had something to do with the disappearance. Louise was a very good friend of Christian’s brother, Marcus. So both Christian and Louise wish to find Marcus. As always, the author does a great job of storytelling and the ending is an HEA. If you like steamy, romantic regencies, you’ll enjoy this one.

There was something captivating about them & their relationship from the beginning. It was an interesting concept & I do like that he wanted them to work together & really wanted to honor their marriage.

They also had in common the fact that both of their fathers were fairly terrible & selfish men & I think that did bring them closer together.

I don't feel like his ex was necessary at all to the story.

There were some ups & downs in the story but I do love that overall they were together against an enemy that was outside of their relationship.

There were some really sweet moments between them, though some cold moments & a little too much pushback & I did really enjoy reading their relationship.

An Enjoyable Read

I enjoyed this story. Lady Louise's father was a gambler. He owed money to many people. One evening he made a bet using his daughter to tempt the gamblers. Several years before this, Duke Christian had been insulted by Louise's father. When he realised what was happening he realised he could get his revenge on her father. He took part in the game and won Louise. They were married within a week. I liked the way the story developed their growing affection. Louise was a strong-minded lady and was willing to make her feelings known. The story deals with gambling, domestic abuse, illegitimacy, arson and attempted murder. It is quite steamy in parts but it is well-written. An enjoyable read.

I couldn't put it down

At first, I wondered how the main characters would ever fit together, but the author brings their love about slowly a d believably. I enjoyed the suspense surrounding the disappearance of Marcus. The hot scenes were filled with slow desire. I was surprised and truly happy to see how the book ends for Marcus.
I would have liked to know more about what happened to Marcus when he disappeared, and I was a bit confused as to why Christian didn't follow through with the townhouse going to Louise or her mother.

Exquisite!!!!

Love Christian's and Louise's story. They came together under most unusual circumstances. The mystery surrounding the story, an unexplain disappearance
came to a shocking conclusion. I did not see it coming and was beyond delighted by its' conclusion. Hugely Recommend!!!!

Powerful Lady Sold

What a fun story. Unexpected twist, subtle foretelling only caught later. Very bad father gets his due. Christian is a little too perfect but who cares. He has his reasons. Will likely read again!

A Beautiful love story

From the first chapter to the last, there was so much going on that I couldn't wait to read what happened next. It wasn't just a love story but one that showed how women were treated then as bargaining chips. Though this did lead to love

Intriguing and enjoyable.

I must say the ending (though part was predictable) was a shock. I was not expecting it.
