What does it mean to be a hero—in sports and in life?
Heroes aren’t just the ones who bring home medals. Hero Redefined delves into the lesser-known stories of Olympic athletes—and a couple of unique Olympic venues—that challenge the conventional narrative of glory and gold. In riveting personal profiles exploring herculean feats of strength, perseverance, and sportsmanship, award-winning sports journalist Doug Levy offers a new vision of heroism. There is more than one path to greatness, and the extraordinary acts of resilience and personal sacrifice by these athletes have left an indelible mark on the spirit of the Olympic games in quiet but fundamental ways through the ages.
Each chapter reveals a different face of heroism—immense resilience, strength of character, unparalleled sportsmanship, an incredible zeal to compete, and a seemingly superhuman will to finish. Throughout, Levy celebrates the heroic human spirit and its relentless drive to carry the torch forward—both inside and outside of the Olympic Games.
Solid journalism combined with master storytelling
When I told my wife I was reading Doug Levy's Hero Redefined book, she was skeptical of the premise. But, when I started mentioning some of the stories I was reading about surrounding Olympic events and participants ranging over so many decades, she couldn't help but admit that premise was actually a brilliant idea.
I'm a big fan of historical fiction, and while this book is not part of that genre, there is a similar feel, in that Doug expertly tells fascinating personal stories against the backdrop of major world events. In short, I like to be entertained and educated simultaneously when I read, and this book did that in spades.
While I was surprised at the level of pure entertainment of this book, what didn't surprise me was the quality of research and reporting that Doug did to create this amazing collection. I've known Doug for quite some time, and he is always shown a high level of professionalism as a journalist.
No matter what you're looking for in a book, this will have something for you that will entertain and delight.
Bravo, Mr. Levy. Take your place on the metal stand. This book is pure gold!
I’m not a big sports fan. But this isn’t a book about sports so much as it is a book about the human spirit. These are stories of individuals who, when presented with adversity, not just persevered, but embodied the best they could offer – character, integrity, fortitude. I found these people fascinating and the choices they made quite moving. We all wonder how we would respond under pressure – would we sacrifice our shot at an Olympic medal for a relative or stranger? Would we risk permanent physical injury to represent our country with honor? Would we stand up for human rights at the risk of our career? Levy has done incredible research for these stories, talking personally with these athletes and/or their surviving relatives and friends, giving context to their lives. I especially loved that he went to Tanzania to interview John Stephen Akhwari and captured his personality and backstory. This is a book about the human condition -- in all our frailty, grit, grace, and greatness. Highly recommend.
Hero Redefined is such a refreshing and deeply moving read. Instead of focusing on the big-name medalists we always hear about, this book brings light to the incredible stories of Olympic athletes who often go unnoticed—but whose journeys are just as inspiring (if not more).
Each chapter dives into a different athlete’s story, and what really stood out to me was the raw honesty and emotion behind their experiences. It’s not just about winning—it’s about resilience, heart, and the true meaning of perseverance. The author does an amazing job connecting with each person, bringing their voices and struggles to life with empathy and authenticity.
I also loved the way the book highlights the backdrop of a few iconic Olympic venues and the significant individuals who helped make it all possible.
This book is a beautiful reminder that success isn’t always about standing on a podium—it’s often found in the grit, grace, and growth that happens behind the scenes. Highly recommend to anyone who loves sports, storytelling, or just a good dose of inspiration.
What a delightful, inspiring read! I love that this is a book you can read sequentially cover to cover or choose any chapter that that speaks to you. When I need a pick me up, I take a few minutes for myself to read a chapter. It's clear Doug Levy has a gift and passion for storytelling and he's done incredible in depth research to accurately share the stories of these extraordinary Olympic athletes. Each compelling chapter teaches us that heroism and a rich life come not from being the best athlete, but from perseverance, resilience, and strength of character, all traits we strive for not, just in athletics, but in the "game of life." If you're a fan of the Olympics (who isn't?) or if you enjoy uplifting human spirit stories, you will love this book! This would be a perfect graduation gift or really a great gift for any occasion. Gift yourself, along with your friends and family! I can't wait to see what the author does for his next book! Katie J
Hero Redefined is one of those rare sports books that actually goes deeper than medals, headlines, or highlight reels. Doug Levy shines a light on the athletes whose stories rarely get told—people who pushed through injury, heartbreak, or impossible odds and still found a way to show up with integrity, grit, and heart.
What makes this book stand out is the way it reframes heroism. It’s not about being the fastest or strongest. It’s about resilience, character, and the quiet moments of courage that happen far from the cameras. Each chapter introduces an athlete whose journey stays with you long after the page, reminding you that greatness isn’t always loud.
If you love the Olympics, sports history, or stories about human strength and spirit, this book hits the mark. Inspiring, grounded, and beautifully told.
Hero Redefined by Doug Levy is a refreshing take on Olympic heroism that goes beyond the podium. Levy masterfully highlights the resilience, courage, and determination of athletes whose stories often go unnoticed. Through compelling profiles, he challenges the traditional definition of success, proving that true greatness isn’t measured solely by medals. The book is both inspiring and thought-provoking, offering a deeper appreciation for the human spirit in sports and life. A must-read for anyone who loves the Olympics or simply enjoys stories of perseverance!
I would recommend going to one of his readings. A great way to see the book through Doug’s eyes and thoughts. Really enjoyed the Bellingham reading. Larry Otos
This book is an absolute inspiration and thought provoking delight to read. As an athlete myself, I had never thought to dive deeper into the hero's of the Olympic Games beyond those who capture the headlines and medal podiums for the Winter and Summer festivities. Doug Levy does an incredible job and providing color and context to each story he highlights, bringing to life not only moments in history but awakening what it truly means to embody the concept of heroism. While this is his first book, I certainly hope it's not his last and look forward to seeing more from this talented author.
Present time is overwhelming our lives. Internet and social medias are so powerful nowadays that we have less and less time to reflect on the past. Doug Levy's book is essential. Not only does it help us rewinding our memories, which is more and more difficult to do due to the amount of present information available, but it gives the opportunity to learn incredible things about a few people who lived some very special experiences, which makes them special. A must for readers eager to reflect on destiny.
I really appreciated the focus of Hero Redefined. Instead of just celebrating medal winners, it highlights the quieter, often overlooked stories of athletes who showed unbelievable courage, resilience, and heart. The idea that someone can be a hero without standing on a podium really resonated with me. Levy seems to approach these stories with a journalist’s eye, but also with real compassion. It feels like a reminder that greatness isn’t always loud it’s sometimes in the struggle, the persistence, and the willingness to keep going. Inspiring and thoughtful.
Levy brings to vivid life the largely untold stories of Olympians who overcame challenges that even most medal winners never faced, becoming the kind of unsung heroes you can't help but root for. In his passionate telling of their stories, Levy shares their valuable lessons for the rest of us, lessons of perseverance, persistence and belief. You can read each individual story in just a few minutes, but if you're like me, you'll have a hard time putting this book down.
“Hero Redefined” is a powerful and heartfelt tribute to true heroism. It beautifully captures the inspiring journey of my twin sister and other incredible Olympians whose stories have long deserved the spotlight. This book doesn’t just celebrate athletic achievement—it honors resilience, courage, and the human spirit. I’m so grateful these stories were finally told, and told so well. A must-read for anyone who believes in the power of perseverance and purpose.
Not all extraordinary Olympians or high performers receive the recognition they truly deserve for their talent or a focused mindset. Hero Undefined reveals the disappointment and pain (both emotional and physical) but also the satisfaction that can come with striving to be exceptional. It is refreshing and uplifting to read about how good these previously "under the radar" high performers really were. Dr Dana Sinclair, Author of Dialed In: Do Your Best When It Matters Most.
An inspiring celebration of true heroism beyond the podium. Hero Redefined by Doug Levy shines a light on Olympic athletes whose courage, perseverance, and character transcend medals and records. Through powerful stories of resilience and sacrifice, this book reimagines what it truly means to be a hero—both in sports and in life.
A must-read for sports lovers and anyone seeking motivation to overcome life’s challenges.
This book is an inspiring testament to the human spirit, where patience, courage, and resilience truly matter. Levy reminds us that heroism isn’t defined by gold medals or personal branding. Instead, he shows that in the midst of distraction and fanfare, it is the heart that matters most. Hero redefined is a lovely and inspiring book for our times.
The book is a collection of interesting stories of perserverance, sportsmanship, and character. Doug Levy showed some perservance himself in tracking down and interviewing the subjects. His initial book is entertaining and inspirational. Well Done Doug!
A great read! Amazing story telling and written so well. I loved hearing about all the different athletes and their stories. I’m not even a “sports guy” so this book is great for the sports lovers and non sports lovers alike!
"Hero Redefined", is a an easy read and really makes you feel like you were with the author and athlete during their interview process. Some very unexpected stories of athletes going well beyond expected limits regardless of the medal outcome. Highly recommended!
I loved this book. These aren't the Olympic athletes you know about. These are people whose grit, determination and selflessness make them remarkable. Mr. Levy's background as a reporter serves him well. The stories are colorful, compelling and well researched. The book flows beautifully and you can sense the care he put into each person's story. When you put this book down you will feel you've been in the presence of heroes, but ones who are relatable and reachable. Unforgettable people, and storytelling at its finest. - GW
At a time when the world seems confusing and divided, Levy shows us that sport can still provide hope in our shared desire to transcend what we think is humanly possible. The thirteen engaging stories of true athleticism and real dedication made the book hard to put down. If you find yourself jaded with the NIL invading collegiate athletics, the explosion of sports betting, and the rise of the social media sports-fluencer, read "Hero Redefined" and be reminded that the pure love of the game can always overcome.
A great variety of stories of little known or remembered athletes - so great to have them brought back to view in nice short stories. Easy to read and engaging. Appreciate the author's level of research and variety of those he highlights. Had the Kindle version to read while traveling.
Very enjoyable. Great to learn so many Olympic stories I had no idea about. Very easy to read and flows well that you can take in solid chunks and come back to it easily. Highly recommended for Olympic enthusiasts or people who want to learn about some amazing stories.
This book brings together inspiring stories of how Olympic athletes have stepped up in remarkable ways. The narratives are both meticulously researched and beautifully written.
You’ll learn stories you would never know were it not for this deep dive from Doug Levy. It is not your average athletic storytelling. It will redefine your idea of hero.
This book offers an inspiring look at unsung heroes long forgotten or largely unknown in the annals of the Olympic Games. The stories that author Doug Levy assembled do not focus on famed Olympians like Jesse Owens, Nadia Comaneci, Carl Lewis or Michael Phelps. Instead, he takes a novel approach, profiling athletes who overcame adversity to complete, who fought through injuries or afflictions to finish, and who sacrificed their places in history to help and save others. There are others whose steadfast commitments confronted obstacles to ensure the games could go on. Based on meticulous research and personal interviews, his litany of well-chosen stories resurfaces acts of sportsmanship, courage, dedication that underscore the true Olympic spirit. The book is truly a well-written, inspirational read.
