I'm actually pretty transparent when it comes to my reviews, and I'll read pretty much anything; including Christian fiction (the Left Behind series and the Seventh Dimension series are among my favorites), but I went into those KNOWING they were highly Christian and God based. There was no surprise when the Bible was tossed all over the pages or used in metaphor. Throwing religion out of left field is a huge turn off for me. And that's ANY religion, not just Christianity.
That being said, this story was actually amazing... Until around 85% into it when Bible verses became the things to fight the evil with, without the warning that it was Christian horror. I absolutely could have done without the indoctrination attempt; especially when Christianity's only tie to Halloween is that Halloween was meant to be a mockery of Samhain. However, if the kid that didn't believe in God in the first 84% of the book didn't start magically knowing Bible verses, this would have been a top notch read for me, even if it is a direct subgenre change from the first two Bliss High books (which until now have been physiological horror).
If I'd had the warning that this story was so deeply steeped in Christianity I would have enjoyed the ending far more than I did. As it is, it felt sudden and forced.
There's also a few minor grammatical errors sprinkled throughout the book; nothing drastic or distracting. The most distracting aspect was literally the random, sudden addition of Bible verses in an otherwise phenomenal Halloween-themed story.
As always, this is just MY personal opinion. I think Jessica Blade is an extremely talented horror author and I fully intend to continue reading her books; a little warning next time would go a long way though, at least when it comes to my reviews.
I give this book 3 of 5 Paws.
