I wish I could visit Havenwood in real life! I sure do enjoy these fascinating, spellbinding stories from Ms Gray. Fun to read, great escapades, and easily relatable characters, even though there's magic involved. Real life situations mixed with magical beings in a fantastical town, along with humor makes it such a pleasure to read.
The Legend of the Leaf is an exciting mystery adventure with Harper Sullivan, the owner of the Spellbooks magical bookstore, in the town of Havenwood. While on a picnic date with her boyfriend, she discovers a fully dressed skeleton in the woods and Harper has a lot of questions about it and is determined to find the answers. Join Harper as she uncovers old magic, mystical creatures and scientific experiments to solve the mysterious death.
L. L. Gray’s book is engaging, creative and interesting while making her characters believable and come alive in the magical town of Havenwood, a place where one would want to live. I got caught up in the book and couldn’t put it down and stayed up late while reading it. I loved this book and the characters, especially Ignatious, the little dragon. He’s so adorable!
I received an advance reader copy from this author and I leave this review voluntarily and happily.
Another great book in this series. Lots of action and an intriguing murder mystery. The world building of Havenwood and its surrounds continues, and some more interesting characters are introduced. More is learnt about existing characters and Harper’s magical abilities are expanded. Look forward to Book 8. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A day off work leads Harper Sullivan to a wonderful picnic spot and the bones of a missing professor. But there's more than meets the eye as curses and lost treasures abound. With her eye on the safety of the magical Heartwood, Harper races to save Havenwood and its luck.
This is my first foray into the Havenwood Cozy Mystery series, and it's been a delightful adventure. Even though I had not read any of the previous stories, the characters were so welcoming that I felt at home immediately. Harper, the main character, is easy to befriend and led me on a fascinating journey. The rest of her friends quickly became mine, though I must confess I particularly adored Ignatius, the little dragon.
The mystery of the murder, along with all the twists and turns, kept me well captivated. Harper's detection methods are the tried-and-true shoe leather type, which felt very natural. Her logic was soundly thought out, and she benefited from the assistance of her friends.
This is a fabulous paranormal cosy. If this is your genre, you'll love it!
Thank you to L. L. Gray and BookSirens for the opportunity to read this digital ARC. As always, my opinions are my own, honest and true.
Do expect to be swept up and away in Havenwood's latest mystery brimming with numerous twists, new unknown magical creatures from university lab and to deal with a lot of head scratching. It's a fairly lengthy reading feast, impossible to put down. Sullivan's Spellbooks has a new employee, Cassidy, who even got Luna's approval. Harper has a strange day dream and when Gabriel takes her out on a date hiking in Jeremiah's botanical gardens, said day dream leads to a skeleton, but the decomposition was unnaturally fast. This sets off Harper's detective side and a hornets' nest of mysteries to uncover. Luna is her sassy self, sharper than a minora blade. She even gave Harper a tough love dressing down. I'm curious about the moon bunny. A bonus is having cutie pie Ignatius featuring as a little hero. With too many puzzle pieces, reinforcements came in the form of our well loved characters and even a new friend. The Dr's magically enhanced subjects had to be regained and neutrlazed else all hell will break loose. Got to mention the vivid descriptions of the culinary delights had me drooling wishing I could instantly deport three. Each book bring so much more to the series. Fantastic doesn't even compliment it properly. I received an advanced review copy and leave this review voluntary Thank you
This story was just the perfect next installment — escalating to murder and unethical science while also showing Harper’s settling into Havenwood with a thriving business, friends circle, and romance. It’s amazing how real this character is to me because I’m so happy to see her successful and solving cases! (Also, that sheriff needs to hire her part-time!)
This book, this series, is like a cup of hot chocolate on a stormy day, comforting, warming, soothing. It's a hug in a mug, except in the form of a book. Havenwood is a cosy little town, where everyone knows everyone, where family and friends take centre stage. And with the opening chapters full of Luna wit and hilarity, the warmth spread throughout me.
With Spring in full force, business in Sullivan Spellbooks is picking up nicely and Harper couldn't be more delighted or relieved. Book signings and events are on the cards and Harper is anxious, actually, she's a worry pot of note. With a new employee, Harper can enjoy some time off but what started off as an ideal day, ended up being anything but. Besides the strange visions she's been having, she stumbles across an even more bizarre murder and to compound it all, it all points to an elusive dwarf. I do love how sleuthing comes so easily and naturally to her, she can't see a puzzle without trying to solve it, she can't see a mystery without trying to unravel it. The stranger the mystery, the more her detective mode juices are activated.
The characters in this splendid world are fun to follow. It was so cool to see Luna being featured so strongly in this book, her very presence makes me smile, impossible not to with her no nonsense attitude and quirkiness. Besides Luna and Harper, who I adore, there's Bella, a friend like non other; Gabriel, who really is a delight. His stong personality oozes protectiveness, caring and love, both for Harper as well as the town. And with the bumbling, over enthusiastic Officer Reggie, a real sweetheart of a leprechaun, a witch who she shouldn't like, but does, and she ain't the only one, I adore Seraphina, and a pint sized dragon, the entertainment value is immense!
This story was more intricate than the previous ones, this author always gives excellent storytelling with mystery and drama, all wrapped up in a neat cocoon, tugging the strands until they unravel and showing us what's inside. This time she upped the stakes, she upped the mystery, she upped the drama. And she does it so effectively, I wasn't even aware when my pulse started racing. She drops revelations and truths, adds a special "Liz twist" on it all and always with a fabulous dose of humour and the sweetest of romance. I love the depth of Ms Gray's magic system, it's so naturally infused but powerful, one could be forgiven for thinking it's real. And that's exactly what I adore about these books and this author, everything is imbued with magic that feels real, with cool characters, Harper, Bella, Gabriel, all feel like long time friends. Even Luna, bless her snarky soul, feels like a person. Magically blended by Ms Gray special brand of spells, I step into this world with both feet each time I enter Havenwood.
The warmth of the story, the warm of the characters, the warmth of this world the author created just fills me with, well, warmth 😁 Ok...there IS a murder and shady intentions, awful intentions, all of which spikes the storytelling so well! I enjoyed every minute of this book, although, I have to say, there's one scene that showcased just how brilliant this author is, how cool her imagination is, that scene where Patrick explains how the ley lines came to be, well geez, simply magnificent! Harper herself actually described this book perfectly, "The whole thing was layered, tangled and vast". Awesome read!
I have read every one of the Havenwood Mysteries and have loved each and every one of them, but I think this is the best one yet! Not only do we get a lot of Gabriel, our MC Harper’s boyfriend, but we get a lot of Luna the talking, sassy Ninja rabbit, and even Ignatius, the talking, book-loving mini-dragon! I was in heaven reading this book, and of course, we get those scrumptious descriptions of food that Harper’s BFF Bella and her mother Honey make over in the Oasis, Havenwood’s B&B. The story is absolutely riveting and I spent a couple of nights reading WAY past my bedtime to see what happens next! I won’t go into detail about the plot, no spoilers, but there is a lot of good and bad magic, twists and turns, and ultimately a great ending.
There are so many things I like about this series. The characters who inhabit Havenwood are delightful. You want to go there and meet every one of them – well, except maybe the Puddlestons, the dour owners of the rival bookshop down the street from Spellbooks. Our MC Harper Sullivan is finally coming into her own and has enough confidence in her business to hire some help, giving Cassandra, a sort-of outcast, another chance to fit in with the locals. In this age of divisiveness, it’s a joy to read about a town where the residents help one another without hesitation, even if they don’t necessarily like one another. It’s what they do in Havenwood – they look out for one another so that all may thrive. What a concept! Luna the talking rabbit (don’t you dare call her a bunny! LOL) is my favorite character in these stories, and I was disappointed that she was barely in the last book. Ms. Gray more than made up for it in Legend of the Leaf, though, giving Luna a big part in the story. And Ignatius! I love that little dragon. He also plays a big part in the story. It’s gratifying also to see how the romance between Harper and Gabriel is growing. I think he is better suited to Harper than Finn was, although I like Finn, too, and hope we can catch up on how he and Seraphina are doing in the near future. Technically Ms. Gray is an excellent writer and brings Havenwood to life on every page. Her descriptions of the food alone will make you drool – I can almost smell what comes out of Honey and Bella’s ovens! The book is well edited and proofed so you won’t be distracted by typos or grammatical errors.
As with her previous books in the series, this one is rated G and can be read by anyone. And should be in order to get a big jolt of positivity! If you haven’t read any of the previous books, you may be a bit lost – the backstory isn’t explained here and it’s really helpful to know the story behind Spellbooks and how Harper came to own it, as well as the story of Havenwood. But the story is complete and can be read as a standalone if you really want to. Do yourself a favor though, and at least read the first book or two to get that background.
I received an advance review copy directly from the author and I leave this review voluntarily and with great pleasure.
The Legend of the Leaf is the seventh book in Gray's Havenwood Cozy Mystery series. These wonderful books are written as standalone mysteries, however I recommend starting from the first one allowing you to meet Harper Sullivan and her friends and neighbours in Havenwood.
In this book, Harper has finally hired someone to help out at Spellbooks: Cassandra Bellamy. While apprehensive about leaving Spellbooks in Cassandra's hands, her best friend, Bella, and boyfriend, Gabriel, plan a full day for her away from the bookstore. It starts out as a wonderful day with delicious treats at the cafe and leads to her checking on the Heartwood tree saplings, but then quickly takes a turn. When she and Gabriel stumble across a skeleton near one of the saplings, they quickly call Sheriff Jackson. It turns out that it was Dr. Malcolm Fenwick, Professor of Natural Sciences at Eastford University and he had only been missing a few days. With an unnaturally fast rate of decomposition, and the whispers from the Heartwood sapling, Harper knows there's definitely a mystery to be solved. It's a good thing that she excels at solving puzzles!
With the help of some old friends and some new ones, Harper not only gets to the bottom of this stumper but also finds justice for the professor and protects their beloved Havenwood.
I adore Gray's writing. Cracking open one of her books is like getting home, putting on comfy sweats and slipping your feet into cozy slippers. Each book brings a smile to my face, and a moment of peace to my soul. I especially love this Havenwood series and the many quirky characters that she has introduced. It was especially wonderful to have Ignatius return in this one; I missed that lovable book-dragon.
This story was a little darker than some of the others; I don't recall there being actual bodies in the past installments. I appreciated Gray's return to having magic almost as another character in her book. Her last book, while still delightful, felt somewhat magic deficient. I feel that it is a major part of the charm of this series.
I highly recommend this series if you enjoy cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist. While they are standalone stories, they are interrelated so I recommend starting from the beginning:
The Mystery in the Margins The Puzzle in the Pumpkin Patch The Secret of the Silver Serpent The Riddle at the Revelry The Heist of the Hidden Heart The Mayhem in the Masquerade The Legend of the Leaf
I was thrilled to read that Gray has a novella planned as well as another full length novel: The Conspiracy on the Cruise. No word yet on when those will be released, but you can be sure I'll be on the lookout!
I honestly wish Havenwood was real. By this time, having read every book in this series as it becomes available, I feel like it is real, and I know Havenwood and its members very well.
I love that we get to see new parts of Havenwood in every story. It is such a wonderful, magical town and every character is spectacular. I get that true feeling of warmth and wonder as Harper walks through town. In this story you get to see the true Havenwood motto of everyone helping and trusting each other in order to support each other and the town as well.
I love that Harper and Gabriel’s relationship keeps developing. He has become quite the boyfriend and I love how he reminds Harper that he is there for her any time and she can depend on him. In this story he shows that, it’s not just words. He reminds her not to head straight into danger alone and this time she actually listened… for the most part. We get to see their love blossom into something spectacular and also their magic grow together. I loved how much Gabriel and their relationship in general was focused on in this story. I feel like he has been a side character, popping up for a single scene here and there, but here he was working side-by-side with Harper for a lot of the book.
The mystery in this story, whoa! Buckle up and get ready! Liz’s story lines keep developing deeper and deeper. There were so many layers to unravel and dots to connect in this mystery; it was mind boggling! I was surprised when the story line kept going deeper and more unknowns and questions popped up.
I wouldn’t say it was full of twists and turns; I would say this mystery took on the shape of the Heartwood Tree and had many branches that had Harper veering off in new directions, hoping she might gain a clue from what was going on. Each new clue led her to a new friend or worked to strengthen a friendship, then they would give her another nugget of information that branched off and lead her toward someone else to talk to.
And of course, in the end everything unravels and Harper walks away with more new friends, stronger relationships and ever developing magic.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Spring is coming and Spellbooks is finally starting to pick up. Enough so that Harper has hired Cassandra to help. Which gives Harper time to do more of the things she loves - dates with Gabriel and solving murders. While tending to the saplings, Gabriel and Harper stumble on a skeleton in the woods and as the mystery unravels they must investigate outside of Havenwood to keep the town safe. Harper is as tenacious as ever! Now that there is a murder to solve, she won't let a little thing like not being a police officer or being out of her "jurisdiction" stop her. She is such a wonderfully optimistic character. She is never mean or bitter and is genuinely out to do what's best for Havenwood. Gabriel was more of a focus in this book as well. He has resigned himself that Harper will be Harper so he may as well go with her to keep her safe. He can also be her voice of reason when Harper gets a little too excited. And Luna!! That little firecracker of a rabbit always has me giggling. She is one of the best animal sidekicks ever and I was happy to see her actually get to be a sidekick in this book. Her reputation is definitely known around Havenwood and I, for one, would not want to mess with her. Ignasius also gets to play a big part in this book as well and he definitely showed how brave he is. As usual, the mystery is fun to solve alongside Harper. This one was recent, so it escalated the urgency to solve the crime as well. There are several new characters introduced and some old acquaintances we get to see again as well. We are also introduced to different types of magical beings, some friendly and some that are definitely scary! There is never a dull moment in this book, and I could not wait to find out who was behind everything! The suspense was almost killing me! And I cannot forget to mention all the delicious dishes that we read about in this book! My mouth was watering while reading this book! The ending of this book hints at what is coming next in this series, and it will hopefully bring us full circle on Harper's arrival in Havenwood. I can't wait to see what happens next in Havenwood!
Legand of the Leaf This book is probably the best in the series to date and starts with Gabriel taking Harper on a romantic picnic. This was supposed to help her relax and forget about her last adventure. However, the romantic outing is interrupted by finding a dead body.
Gabriel and Harper begin the day by visiting our favorite Treeant Jeremiah who has a magical tonic that will help the heartwood saplings grow strong and healthy. He shows them his to administer the tonic and soon after Harper receives a vision from one of the saplings but she doesn’t yet understand what she saw or that it was from a sapling heartwood tree. They quickly head off to give the tonic to the remaining saplings and Gabriel’s surprise picnic at a beautiful meadow with an ancient well.
I love how the town comes together to help Harper and Gabriel solve this mystery which could wreak havoc on Havenwood’s deepest secrets and threatens it very magic. We get more of Ignatius our beloved little dragon a he saves the day and I hope he is ok I guess we shall see in the next book if he remains curse free. I love that little cutie and I want much more of our Fire breathing friend.
I was in heaven reading this book, and of course, we get those scrumptious descriptions of food that Harper’s BFF Bella and her mother Honey make over at the Oasis, Havenwood’s B&B. If a cookbook ever comes out I’m getting it he de down that food always sound’s amazing. The story is absolutely riveting and I spent way too many late nights reading. I won’t go into detail on plot, no spoilers, but there is plenty of magic, twists and turns, and ultimately a good ending thst peaks towards the future.
It’s amazing to see how the romance between Harper and Gabriel is growing they are adorable together and are the perfect fit both balancing each other and being a true romantic team. Although not completely necessary I think reading the series in order is best it gives you what I think is much needed background story on all the characters and town shenanigans. I highly recommend reading it!
First of all, I want to mention how cool it was to see the name "Fenwick" in a book! This is my maiden name, and my daughter was reading some of it over my shoulder and got super excited to see it 😁
As expected, I loved this new instalment to the havenwood series.
This time, an actual dead body, not a ghost, is the centre of the mystery that Harper finds herself entangled in, after happening upon it while out on a relaxing day out with her beau, Gabriel.
But unlike any other crime scene, this poor soul is just a skeleton. Every bit of meat and sinew picked clean off. The only thing left was the clothes on his back.
What could possibly be the cause of this horrible scene? Harper and her friends are determined to find out.
It was great to see the return of some familiar faces, especially our little dragon friend, and the introduction of some other magical members of the Havenwood community. I also enjoyed Harper and Gabriel working on this one together, with the others taking more of a back seat❤️
That's what I enjoy about this series. Harper remains the main character, but the author switches it up with who helps her with her mysteries. Sometimes, they all help. Other times, it's a select few.
The ending was a great setup to what could potentially be the next mystery in the series, and I can't wait to read it 😀
I was lucky enough to be given an arc of this book to read and review, and I am super thankful to be given the opportunity to be part of the arc team 🥰
This is my favorite book in the Havenwood series yet! Harper has found her self confidence, is more self assured and less indecisive and while still willing to take a risk, is more clear headed about rushing into danger. The book sucks you in to a murder mystery right off the bat through a vision she has of a professor who seems to furtively be hiding something and the action continues non stop. When her vision seems to be true as she finds out through her connection to the Heartwood tree that there has been a murder, the fun begins and the clues never stop. Her magical rabbit Luna now has a voice that is less snide and is now snarky, helpful and often has some funny lines. Harper finds herself embroiled in another magical murder, has wonderful support from her now solid boyfriend Gabriel and her loyal friends she has picked up along the way since moving to Havenwood.
The author must have a well developed culinary pallet as her descriptions of the food offered in the various cafes is inspired and will have you drooling. Liz continues to write in a style that makes you feel you are right there with the characters, experiencing what they see and feel. Her story telling gets stronger with every new edition. You’ll enjoy going along with Harper on this cozy ride.
"The Legend of the Leaf," the seventh installment in LL Gray's Havenwood cozy mystery series, maintains the wonderfully high standard of writing fans have come to expect. It was a delight to reacquaint myself with Harper, Gabriel, and a plethora of familiar faces, while also meeting some engaging new characters who seem poised to become series regulars. With Spellbooks left in the capable hands of her new assistant, Cassandra, Harper finds herself with time to investigate a murder. The case begins with mysterious communications from one of the Heartwood saplings, leading Harper and Gabriel beyond the bounds of their magical hometown. Their investigation takes them into a world where ordinary people live side-by-side with magic, utterly unaware of its existence. The danger escalates quickly as they encounter cursed artifacts, perilous magical creatures, and a particularly enigmatic dwarf. As always, LL Gray weaves an excellent plot, introducing new elements seamlessly into the established world. It was a joy to see Harper and Gabriel's relationship continue to deepen, and a special treat to have Ignatius make a welcome appearance. This was another thoroughly satisfying visit to Havenwood. I finished the last page already anticipating the next book in the series!
Back to the magical town of Havenwood where most things seem to be magical. Harper has had a couple of weird visions, of a death and a well. On a picnic date with Gabriel, Harper comes across the dead body. It’s a strange one not only because of her vision but because of the state of the body. All clothes are intact but the body is down to a clean skeleton. Discovering an ID tag from a nearby university, the two of them set out to investigate. When they break into the professor’s office, they come across a surly dwarf who leaves immediately without any information. So now there are two mysteries, who killed the professor and what’s the dwarf after. Following leads only finds more questions, a black market, a leprechaun, curses and more. Bella isn’t quite as involved as usual but the fantastic little bibliophile, Ignatius is a big help. Luna is quite involved as well. This book is a great cozy mystery, a good story, fantastic characters and humourous. A quick, easy read. I want to go to Havenwood, try out Hocus Mocha, the Oasis, and live in Spellbooks. There is absolutely nothing I dislike about this series.
Harper is having visions that are haunting where a man is running in fear. He nears a well and the vision shows a cage with something inside. It tumbles into the black waters of the well. She cannot control when this vision hits. Cassandra is her new employee to her book store and Bella sets up a day away from the bookstore for Harper. Gabriel is part of the distraction and takes her on a mystery date. They wind up in the forest where Jeramiah hands over a special elixir for the seedlings of the heart tree. It seems the saplings are growing faster than predicted and instead of words, they are sending Harper visions. She and Gabriel find a skeleton of a professor at the local college. Only thing is, he has been dead maybe a week, his clothes are all in tack, no weathering. His body is just clean bones, a raw skeleton. A day that was supposed to be an enjoyable mystery date has turned into a mystery of magic. This was a gripping mystery! Will they uncover illegal species trading and what did Dr. Fenwick discover about wyms? L.L. Gray has a true talent of taking the reader into secret magic.
I really love LL Gray's books. This is book 7 in the series.
I definitely recommend reading them in order, from the beginning, to have the best understanding of the overall storyline and the characters, but this can be read on its own if needed.
In this one, Harper and boyfriend Gabriel find a dead body in the forest, near a wishing well, and there are strange things about it. Harper has a bad feeling about it all. As the two work to help solve the mystery, there are lots of twists and turns and new characters (and old ones, too) along the way.
The characters are wonderful, the story well told, the settings lovely, and the mystery an exciting one. Add to that the humor (particularly thanks to Luna) and the romance between Harper and Gabriel (which is just heartwarming), a lot of discussion of sweets (so well done that they literally had my mouth watering just reading about them!), and, of course, magic, and you have a don't want to put down book.
At the end of the book, the author writes: "So, if my stories have made you smille, laugh, or brought a little magic into your life, please let me know."
It's always a true joy to return to Havenwood. This adventure gets us outside in early spring for a little romance ... until Harper and Gabriel find a dead body on their picnic!!!
We visit a university, learn about some new magical creatures, drink lots of coffee from Hocus Mochas, welcome a new employee to Spellboooks, spend more time with our dear dragon, Ignatius, deepen our bond with the heartwood trees, gain knowledge about magical jewelry, eat more yummy food, realize that there are very dishonorable people in the magical world just like the regular world, and of course, solve the mystery!
It was a fun adventure; we mostly spent time with Gabriel and Harper and less time with the gang directly in Havenwood. I look forward to bringing them back together in the next installment hopefully.
Either way, grab a lovely beverage and a snack, get comfy, and enjoy your trip to Havenwood, as always. In the sweet words of Ignatius, "Tea, books, helping friends. This is the Havenwood way." And that's the way it should be everywhere, right?!
Now that Harper hired someone to help out in the bookstore, Gabriel has decided to take her out for a well deserved surprise adventure. And the day seemed to be going so well...that is until they run across the subject of Harper's latest bad dreams, a wishing well set in the forest, and then a dead body. When they decide to help the sheriff identify the remains as well as the motive, they learn that there really is such a thing as bad luck. I love this series and this one was fun as most of the action takes place outside the town for a change. They also added a new character into the mix (shhh, she's a leprechaun) and I hope she comes back for a visit or two in future stories. I'm glad to see that Harper and Gabriel are continuing to expand their relationship and as always, hope for the fairy tale happy ending I look forward to the next adventure. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book and all opinions are strictly my own.
Wow, what a story! Spellbooks owner Harper Sullivan and her paramour Gabriel are about to unwrap a secret that could affect the village of Havenwood forever.
involving the magical community in trying to track down exactly what is going on isn't easy but the new guard of the Heartwood is trying very hard. When a research scientist is found dead Harper senses something could damage not only her saplings but the future of her community. With the use of magic, knowledge and just plain luck she and her friends work together to solve a mystery and in the end possibly find another
This story, once I got into it just wouldn't let me go. I read most of it in two sittings and would love to see the characters in another story soon. Highly Recommended 5/5
[ Disclaimer: I received this book from Book Sirens but in no way did it affect my reading or my review which is my own work]
Another super fun (and almost disastrous) mystery with Harper back in Havenwood.
This one is just as easy to read as the rest - plenty of suspense, lots of laughs, and all the quirky magical charm I've come to expect. The mystery stands on its own while still giving us more insight into the nature of Havenwood and the Heartwood tree. Love how Harper's confidence is growing and the use of her magic - she has a cool power that can do lots of neat stuff.
I also really like how Harper's relationship with Gabriel is slowly moving forward. It feels natural, with little moments that show their trust and connection growing without being rushed.
If you like cozy mysteries in a whimsical town filled with quirky people and magical hijinks, you’ll love this one.
I have loved this series and watching Harper grow and put down roots, literally and figuratively has been a special treat. While it's always fun to return to Havenwood, with its ecclectic blend of magic and whimsy. This book was the perfect balance of snarkiness and sweetness between Luna the bunny and, well, everyone else.
I am a sucker for a sidekick and have loved Luna's special brand of spunk, sass, and sage advice. I loved how Luna was able to take a break from guard duty and, help take a bite of out crime… I also loved how the author wove in older characters, while introducing us to new friends and communities.
This book was a super fun, warm hug… I always love returning to Spellbooks, but this was an especially fun romp. I can't wait to see where the author takes us next!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
New characters and new supernatural beings! What could be better?
Once again, we’re back in Havenwood along with Harper and all her friends. I still love Luna and just how snarky she can be. Big shock, there’s another murder and another mystery to be solved and of course, Harper steps up. I really wish Havenwood was real and I could go there myself. I would just love to meet everyone there. The characters are just all so engaging that I feel as if I know them myself. The plots are just wonderful as well. There’s always something I wasn’t expecting that surprises me. Ignatius got to shine in this one too. I cannot praise this series highly enough and can’t wait to see what Harper gets up to next! Thank you, L.L. Gray.

ARC Review of The Legend of the Leaf, a Havenwood Cozy Mystery, by @llgrayauthor
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“No rest for the inquisitive”
Harper and her friends are back to sleuthing, but this time they’re investigating a murder. I know I say this every time a new Havenwood book comes out, but I think this is my favorite in the series so far! The magical creatures were fascinating, the mystery had so many twists and turns, and we got to see more of Gabriel! As usual, there are mouthwatering descriptions of food, and lots of funny moments involving a sassy talking rabbit. I’m still obsessed with the magic of Spellbooks and Havenwood. If you’re looking for a cozy mystery, you don’t need to look any further! 🪄 ✨
This book, in my opinion, is the best book in the Havenwood Cozy Mystery series thus far, however, they have all been phenomenal. Harper finds herself with some free time on her hands when she hires someone to help out in the shop. Bella and Gabriel decide to help Harper relax and not be so worried about what could be going on with Spellbooks while she is not there. As Harper and Gabriel head out into the woods to deliver some magical liquid to provide unique nutrients to the heartwood saplings so they can grow strong, they stumble upon the remains of a body. And not just a body but it is a skeleton with no flesh remaining. To further that, the person the bones belong to has only been missing for a few days. So how does that happen? That is the mystery that Harper, Gabriel, and Bella have to solve. They have a bit of help from the heartwood sapling that gives Harper a sort of vision of what happened but the sapling is young and didn't understand itself what was happening. You need to read this book/series. You will not be disappointed. I love the characters. I love the small magical town. I love the supernatural creatures. I just love the whole town of Havenwood. I received an advanced reader copy from L.L.Gray and these are all my own thoughts.
As in all my reviews, I defer to the reviewers who can give the synopsis of the book much better than I ... what I can comment on is how I totally got lost in this one. Harper's character has grown so much over the series. To start the book off, there's a scary death with a magical mystery to solve, which she does alongside her boyfriend Gabriel, Luna (the ninja rabbit), and a few new characters. I've loved this series from the beginning, but honestly, this one might be my favorite. I knew this was my kind of book with all the food descriptions that were practically transporting me to Havenwood! I'm so looking forward to the next in the series :-).
Thank you so much for this ARC in exchange for this freely given review.
To start, I must amend a previous statement I made while reviewing The Heist of the Hidden Heart, an earlier book in the Havenwood series. At the time of my review for Heist, I said it was the best in the series. I didn't even think it possible at the time, but I believe The Legend of the Leaf, at least in my personal opinion, has surpassed Heist and is now the best story (so far) in the series. I'll leave the more detailed, play-by-play reviews to others better suited to them and simply say I was pleased to see Officer Reggie and Ignatius both make their way back into the action, though it seems poor Reg has a way to go before he becomes trusted with more serious duties. AS always, I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this book, and all the previous ones in the Havenwood collection. I received an advance review copy (ARC) & I am leaving this voluntary, honest review.
My favorite Havenwood cozy yet! Harper digs into a magic filled murder with a good mix of new characters and old faithfuls. She doesn't spend a lot of time with Spellbooks, but she does spend a good bit of time at her "second job"in this episode. Definitely a must read.
My only complaint- "the breath she didn't know she was holding"- I know this is a stupid easter egg that the people of social media love, but it drives me batty because it feels forced and included only for that not for a true purpose- and it happened at least three times. I know I'm in the minority, so I won't let it color my opinion of the book otherwise, but I definitely cringed every time it showed up- and at this point, my complaint about it exceeds the length of my review.
St Patrick's Day is approaching and with business thriving at Spellbooks, her enchanted bookshop, Harper is finally able to learn more about her guardianship of the magical heartwood trees that grow in the forest surrounding Havenwood. But when a professor is found dead at the same location as an ancient wishing well, and dangerous old treasures start to appear, it will be up to Harper to find out the truth of the curse suddenly causing havoc in the town. I love this series and its many unusual, quirky, sometimes amusing, buy always entertaining characters. This book kept me engrossed with its unexpected twists in the plot, magic, and with a touch of romance I couldn't put this book down. This is a must-read.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC provided by the author.
