Highgate Cemetery and spooky stories go hand and hand. Thinking this was just a book of ghost stories for Highgate I was excited. Turns out it is really a book of supposed encounters with ghosts and the paranormal around Highgate.
What I really didn't like was the layout of the book. Besides a short heading there is nothing really separating the different sections so sometimes you end getting confused. Reading about one ghost and all of a sudden reading about another. Another problem was in the chapters. For example chapter one was about Swain's Lane but in Chapter two it has stories about Swain's Lane and the ghost mentioned in the first chapter.

Alex recommended this book and it was quite a haunting read. Highgate Cemetery is one of the most famous cemeteries in the world. After this book you really want to go there and see for yourself is there are any ghosts.

I don't believe in ghosts, but I am fascinated by the stories that surround such encounters. This book features accounts of experiences of the 'supernatural' kind that apparently took place in Highgate, London. Using anecdotal stories and reports from newspapers Della Farrant talks of tales of the unexpected. She breaks these into categories like 'Haunted Woods', 'Highgate Cemetery West', detailing strange happenings.

As a non-believer in the spooky kind, some of the accounts where unintentionally amusing and were often accompanied by the words 'public house', or such individuals were working late or were 'nervous'. One person sadly, had a breakdown, but I suspect that they would have done anyway, after a ghostly sighting that they saw, yet their friend who was him, didn't. It strikes me, that the clue here seems to be the psychological makeup of the individuals concerned.

Her analysis is sometimes strange and she uses only logical reasons for some of the experiences, even when there are logical answers for others too. She also gets a couple of facts wrong. As someone who was a regular tour guide at Highgate Cemetery in the 1980s and 1990s, anyone who has been on the promenade on the terraced catacombs would know that Julius Beer's mausoleum doesn't block any view of London. Nature does! The trees and shrubs that grew around it are the blind.

Otherwise, quite good, with some interesting historical information and stories.

My review will be for the eBook.
I've always loved Highgate Cemetery, it's always been fascinating to me, especially the creepy encounters people have had in or aroun the Cemetery grounds.
Nick & his friend had a creepy encounter after dark in Highgate Cemetery with a spirit, it seems like the spirit didn't want to be disturbed, so it was trying to force them to leave by being aggressively, trying to scare them so they would leave.
The encounter the taxi driver had with the hitchhiking man that wears a suit and top-hat is also interesting, he seems like a lonely spirit, waiting for the woman that he loves, I hope they are reunited and happy.
I'm curious if people have had any encounters with witches,
grave-robbers, Occultists in Highgate Cemetery, there have been people that went to the Cemetery to perform Satanic rituals to invoke demons.
There have been sightings of a ancient vampire count, demons, various spirits.
Even if the author doesn't believe in people seeing and experiencing creepy encounters with spirits and other types of being it's still interesting to read about various people's strange, inexplicable encounters with spirits, other beings.

Encounters with a Victorian man wearing a suit, a long overcoat and a top-hat that people have described are creepy, unsettling and it proves that he is a intelligent spirit since he has spoken to more than one than one person, but his intentions are unknown which is creepy.
Every interaction with this spirit is different, I think sometimes it depends on the intentions of the people that encountered the Victorian spirit, when the two men broke into the Cemetery at night, it's possible that this angered the spirit since they were disturbed, so their encounter was sinister and disturbing & creepy.
I read this book awhile ago, it was creepy, spooky and entertaining to read, Highgate Cemetery is a creepy, spooky and haunted Cemetery.
I forgot to update my reading progress, I have finished reading this book, I recommend it to anyone that is interested in the paranormal and haunted locations.

Excellent book and well written. Having visited Highgate and the cemetery numerous times made the text come alive - I could well relate to how spooky Swain's Lane and the surrounding area is, particularly when you're walking down it alone on a late autumn afternoon. Reading this book makes me want to go back now and check out again the places Della discuses. Recommended reading.

One of those places I would love to visit, maybe I'm morbid but as a kid going to the local churchyard to get conkers was not frightening. Think it's more to do with the history, so Highgate sounds fascinating, will definitely have to go on a tour of the place.

A nice walk.down memory lane

In the mid to late 90's I went to Highgate Cemetery with a group of friends. We were all Goths at the time so a trip to cemetery was a usual occurrence. This book took me back to those fun times and that lovely summer trip with them good friends . We even called at at least one of the pubs mentioned in this book. It's nice to know that all of our morbid curiosity about the Highgate Vampire and other ghostly goings on are still being researched and documented about twenty or so years later

Great book

Very interesting and well researched. I lived in Highgate on North Hill many years ago and love to reminisce about the place.
