A New Season: A Robertson Family Love Story of Brokenness and Redemption

Rate this book
Alan and Lisa Robertson, members of America’s favorite back woods family and the Duck Commander Clan, take on the topic of relationships as they share the secrets that saved their marriage.

Infidelity, deceit, distrust, and shame. Unfortunately, these are recurring themes in many of today’s marriages in America—even in the family-values-promoting, Christian-based Robertson family.

With a romance that began in junior high, the couple got off to a rocky start but soon settled into married life and had two baby girls. Alan became a pastor in the church where his family had been members for years. Then, when Lisa had an affair, the heartache and the tension was very public.

But this is not a book about a marriage gone wrong. It is a candid story of rescued love and renewed commitment. After nearly getting divorced, Alan and Lisa came to terms with what went wrong in their marriage and both began the hard work of making it right. Now married for twenty-nine years, Alan and Lisa counsel couples in trouble and speak across the country—openly sharing their hardships, their journey to renewed commitment, and a thriving marriage.

Scandals, affairs, stealing money from the empire duck business, this isn't your typical read from the Duck Dynasty family. But then again, you wouldn't understand the redemption that God has done in Al and Lisa's heart, let alone their marriage. They are far from perfect, but perfect for one another and saved by grace. This book is a testament that God can and continues to use evil for good. It comes with a cost, but it is worth the cost. I also loved how honest Al and Lisa were throughout the book. Their feelings were honest, raw and skin deep. If you're looking for a book that is fluff, pass on this book, because these folks are the real deal and have been through it all.

I read this in one Sunday afternoon. It was an excellent, excellent story of brokenness and redemption. I really appreciate the authors' humbleness in telling the entire story of their past in order to reveal God's mercy and power!
I think this is an important book for couples to read together as well as singles such as myself. The main reason I loved this book was for the testimony of God's mercy and salvation in finally saving Alan and then Lisa after years of brokenness and sin! It is a powerful story and I am so grateful they shared it in this well-written book.

Very quick read that made me squirm more than once because it felt like I was invading the private lives and struggles that this couple had endured through the years. It is a book of respect and love that came very late to two very broken people. Hard to read but knowing that in the end God has plans for us for good if we will only listen.

I would never have read this book without Naomi having recommended it, but I'm glad she did. Al and Lisa Robertson (of Duck Dynasty fame) share very candidly about their marriage struggles in a way that was helpful and encouraging to me. Their journey through betrayal, repentance and forgiveness felt very real, genuine and imitable. The chapters at the end where they capture lessons learned and principles for strong marriages rise above the triteness you might expect. This is a quick and easy read and well worth it if you have ever struggled in marriage or know some who have.

If you want a real story about redemption through Jesus Christ, you can listen to the stories from any of the Robertsons.
I enjoyed listening to this, knowing many parts of their story already, but it really went into details that I'm sure were very hard to share.

Alan and Lisa Robinson of Duck Dynasty fame write of the trails and tribulations of their lives from growing up through the television reality series. They openly discuss many topics and also spend time tracing their paths of spiritual development and their efforts to save their marriage.

This book is one that you need to read if you are struggling with something in your marriage. I am a teenager that really likes that back story of the Robertsons so I read this.

This book details Alan and Lisa’s lives and how they met, including their marriage. You learn some problems in their marriage and how they overcame them. I really enjoyed this book because it was a book I could read to keep my hopes up about anything.

You learn that Lisa had an affair that really tore up the marriage and almost affected the lives of their kids. In addition to their marriage problems, Alan and Lisa are very good at explaining how to solve other themes that are problems.

Their connection started in middle school that started a little rocky. Alan turned out to be a pastor in the church where his family started their “Christian way of life” after helping his father start the famous Duck Commander business.

It explains how their families came into play about the affair and tried to resolve a problem. One of the biggest things I really enjoyed and give credit to Alan is that after the affair, he didn’t just give Lisa divorce papers. He decided to spend time apart and think about what happened and if he could continue their lives together. He and Lisa were planning to go on a mission trip to Europe together before he knew about the affair, but his mom went with him and his kids. He told Lisa that if he doesn’t miss her on this trip, they don’t need to be together. But if he really misses her, that means they could work their problems out and stay together. It turns out that he did miss her and decided they were going to work their problems out. They went to counseling and eventually they got back together.

Now they counsel couples themselves that are having problems sharing their stories to them to help.

I recommend this book to anyone having problems with their marriage or wanting to learn about the Robertson family. I loved this book and I want to go read the other books by the Robertson family.

Goodreads Review

Introduce the book, telling the title, author and genre.
I recently finished reading a biography called "A New Season" by Al and Lisa Robertson with Beth Clark . It is an exquisite piece of writing, it includes repetitive heartbreak and the couple shares the secrets and the real story behind how to work through the long spiritual journey it took to get the couple to get back to a healthy relationship. They strongly believe in and use this saying frequently in the book, 'Faith, Family, Ducks. Faith, because they needed God's power to get them through this time. Family, because they strongly relied on family's support and love to assist them on the road to redemption and Ducks, because their family has a very successful duck hunting business and a TV show called Duck Dynasty.

What’s the book about?
The book "A New Season" explained Al and Lisa's situation in depth and detail. It went over all the struggles, all the decision making and included all the tears and heartbreak the couple experienced. They are seen on TV as a happy loving couple and they are now, but before they were featured on TV and before their family's business was so successful Al and Lisa had some issues and the book really keeps you hooked there's so many climactic parts in the book and I never stopped reading, I really enjoyed it. Lisa and Al have crazy lives, anything from abortion to affairs to living in the woods!! It's crazy, but it's an amazing piece of writing.

What are two things you liked about the book? What’s one thing you disliked about the book? Did you dislike the ending? Was it too long?
Two things I liked about "A New Season" was, one, the book was constantly wanting you to keep reading, honestly there isn't really a boring page in the entire book, it's one mistake after another and it's very intriguing and never leaves you bored. Another thing I like was the spiritual take on the whole situation. I am Christian and I really liked how they included how Al and Lisa used God to get them through hard times, it's really inspiring to someone of my faith and it's empowering to know someone has the same beliefs as I do during rough times. I would say I disliked the llittle slurs they have on the side, for example it says a sentence in the book then puts the same sentence on the side just to take up space. I actually really liked the ending it was a perfect summary and conclusion of the book and really tied it together. Lastly, the book was a prerfect length not to long for young adult readers but also not to short and easy for adult readers either!!

Discuss specific readers you think would like this book.
I feel fans of religious, climactic or dramatic books would really like this book. The spiritual aspect of it is really interesting to those who have any sort of relationship with God. It is very interesting the whole book so if you don't cope well with parts of books being boring (like me) it keeps you hooked the whole time. It keeps you interested the whole time because it's so dramatic, the book is really, really spectacular because of all the drama included and all of the interesting, sad and scary times in their lives. I highly recommend this book!!

A New Season by Al & Lisa Robertson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

This is the THIRD time I have read this book in my life. The first time was my senior year of high school (when it first came out). The second time was when I was sitting in my apartment (not yet married) that I shared with BJ (10/10 DON’T recommend). And now the third time as a true follower of Christ and a wife for five years.

A few months ago I went through my old reading journal and updated all the books I have read since my senior year of high school (when I really started reading for fun) onto my Goodreads account. When I came across this one’s review (photo in the comments to see my thoughts as a 17 year old, *cringe*) I knew I wanted to read it again.

You can tell that I have not only matured in the past 8.5 years, but that the Lord has truly worked in my life. While I was so focused on “getting things right” and learning from their story those first two reads, I did miss their clear attempts to share the gospel.

As a true believer now, I give it 4.5 stars because while they do a good job of explicitly laying out the gospel and talking about the purpose of marriage, it is very shallow. I would have loved to have seen them go deeper.

They of course hit the basics: marriage is forever, how sin can affect one’s life and relationships, how divorce is not something to consider lightly, and that reconciliation is always a possibility. I just feel like this book could have gone more in-depth about the picture of marriage and how it points to Christ.

And please know, I don’t mean that in a snobby way, as their story is a true testament to reconciliation and taking the marriage covenant seriously. I guess I just wanted them to go deeper theologically than what they did.

Overall, as a former fan of Duck Dynasty, and for reading this book a third time in my life, I do like this book and their honesty about their struggles, their faith, and their reconciliation. 😊

"I read this book in February and finished February 12, 2015. I loved it and before I get married I want my future husband to read it because it was about their lives together and apart. It talks about love and relationships in a great way with the Lord's guide to having a healthy one, even when you have made many mistakes. It also taught me that just because you are a Christian doesn't mean you have to be perfect. Al and Lisa made many mistakes before they were married and after. I loved it so much and like I said before me and my soon to be husband will read it before we get married, so we can learn from their mistakes and learn how to cope with the problems that marriage brings. I also love the Robertson's so it was up my ally! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Duck Dynasty and future newly weds" (My review from 2015 as a high school senior.)

-- I would love to read it again after being married for five years.--

A New Season: A Robertson Family Love Story of Brokenness and Redemption is by Duck Commander's "beardless brother" Al Robertson and his wife, Lisa. Al and Lisa Robertson tells how their lives were like growing up and during their school days. They tell about the heartache they experienced during those years, which led them far from God and turning to drugs, alcohol, sex and other evil lifestyles. Al briefly describes what it was like being Phil Robertson's son in the early years and how he took care of his younger brothers while Miss Kay tried to make ends meet. Lisa tells of being molested at a young age and her relationship with her family. She also shockingly reveals that at age 16, she has an abortion.
Al and Lisa met while in middle school. Lisa was quickly smitten. They began dating in high school where Al introduces her to fast cars, alcohol, drugs, and sex. Al was not a very nice young man and treats Lisa horribly, leaving her heartbroken. He later turns himself around, leading back to Lisa. They marry and endured many obstacles for the next thirty years. Including the early birth of their daughter, Al going to preaching school, loneliness and infidelity.
Lisa is very honest when she discusses her emotional affair with one man and then a sexual affair with another. This led Al to make important choices regarding his marriage and what was best for his family. How he deals with it is truly inspiring. After many problems in their marriage, Al and Lisa proves that any marriage can endure anything.
Every chapter in the book has a section called "Seasoned Reflections", which includes scripture for inspiration and encouragement. At the end there is an Appendix: Two Keys to a Dynamic Marriage and Questions for Individual Reflection or Group Discussions.
Great book married couples.

Hope Filled
There are dozens of make-your-marriage-better books – this one is different. Instead of preaching the gospel to us, the authors share it. Rather than using anonymous examples, they share true, heartfelt stories of their lives. They offer hope of saving a marriage instead of walking away. They shared how others (including family) didn’t agree and didn’t support their walk of faith and yet, now share in the God’s glory of healing. They shared how to ask for help from your friends and gather support. The book is written by alternating chapters and it flows very nicely. If you only take away one great idea from this book it is worth the time invested. I suspect you’ll find several ideas to make your marriage. My favorite idea is that once an action has been forgiven it becomes neutralized – not forgotten – rather no longer used as ammunition in a fight – how powerful it that idea?! We have shared this idea as a family (including with teenagers—this is the ultimate forgiveness – not using the action against the person later). This book would make a wonderful bible study course book. A great book to share with those contemplating marriage and a delightful gift for someone you love. Enjoy. NetGalley and Howard Books provided an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I enjoyed this book by Al and Lisa, like I have liked all the other books from this great family.. I don't need marriage advice but I wasn't going to not read this book. This book made great and valid points. Definitely makes you think about what would you have done if you were in that situation. I love the fact that Lisa and Al opened up and told their story to help others who may be going through something similar.
They didn't give up on their marriage, they didn't give up on each other, they went to God - and worked through it... This day in age no one works on their marriage.. One wrong thing happens and at a snap of a finger - Divorce! This book was so refreshing to read. You got to read what they went through and it was some pretty hard and awful stuff.. But you got to see a relationship go from bad to good to worse and then back on track to great. Forgiveness is a powerful thing... So thankful for this whole Robertson family for opening up their lives and showing people what God can do!!

1. I read this book because I've read every other book by the Duck Dynasty crew, not because I needed marriage advice.
2. However, they made some wonderful points and made me think about what I would have done in that situation. They are very courageous and their transparency is refreshing.
3. It's important for people to read this book to learn how to forgive and how to be forgiven; by God and by others.
4. My parents went through almost the exact same thing these two went though but my parents weren't Christians at that point and they weren't able to heal their relationship. This book definitely brought me back to my childhood and the hurts that went along with that.
5. I cried during this book.
6. I've seen a negative review on Amazon pertaining to this book. The person said that this was a sinful book, in so many words. The entire point of Jesus dying on the cross for us is to take our sins away. He forgives our sins if we repent and it's clear that Al and Lisa did.

Known as the "quieter" couple of the "Duck Dynasty" family, Al and Lisa Robertson truly lay out their lives and hearts in this book that details the extreme ups and devastating downs of their married life.

This was a difficult book to read as there were so many heart-breaking situations that this couple found themselves in, but it is also uplifting in that their faith eventually saw them through the darkness and now they share their lives hoping to help others in the same dire straits as they once were in.

Fans of the "Duck Dynasty" show will enjoy this rare look into the background of the Robertsons. It will also appeal to those looking for inspiration for married life and relationships.

Lisa and Al Robertson share their story of love and redemption and how they overcame infidelity and other trials through their marriage. They are both so transparent and honest that others will be open to listening to their story because they are so non-judgmental. Lisa also shares how she never addressed her childhood sexual abuse which led to promiscuity and her dependency on seeking mens' approval instead of Christ's; and how she finally overcame this by surrendering her life to Christ. This is an excellent book for those who have suffered sexual abuse, infidelity, or other addictions in their life before coming to know the Lord, or maybe those who want to help others going through similar situations. I highly recommend this book.

I imagine this book was very difficult for both Al and Lisa to write. I am thankful that they did as it showed how working together with God's help they were able to save their marriage. They didn't sugar coat their bad choices as young people, or as adults. I believe Lisa had so much heart ache (being molested as a child for so many years and then having a relationship that ended with her aborting her baby)that without some type of counseling she wouldn't be able to be the kind of wife she should be. Al also had a lot of baggage from his teen years and not a good role model in his father. I am so happy for them that they were able to stay together and grow in their marriage. It was a very good book.

I picked this book up multiple times from the library and never cracked the spine. Predictably, I was not as motivated to read the lesser known Robertson couple's book than I had been previous Robertson family books. After having finished the book (two days after finally starting it) I want to clearly state, I should have never doubted it! This book was truly inspired and ministered heavily to me all the way through. Brutally honest and raw? Absolutely. Hopefilled and potentially life changing? Absolutely. Bravo!

Wonderful and enlightening read

This is an amazing and well wrote book. Al and Lisa shed light and hope for almost any situation a relationship could encounter. They share very intimate and personal experiences from their lives together as well as before they were together. I admire these two and thank them for being so open and honest about real life, and yet show how the grace of God and his wonderful loving, and forgiving way is truly the only way, and how blessed believers truly are.

Authentic must-read

This story is honest, real, and compelling but told without sensationalism. A down-to-earth recounting of life, pain, failure, redemption, hope, healing, restoration and faith. Al and Lisa are people I would like to meet but feel like I already know. A must read!

Excellent book brought tears to my eyes many times. Forgiveness is a wonderful thing, to be able to forgive one another as Al and Lisa did is fantastic, but as Lisa stated she also had to forgive herself. That is something that is and would be hard to do. God's Blessings to this amazing Couple that loved each other and with the help from God to make it work.

Two people who have managed to figure 'the big stuff' out and live with each other, faults and all. I truly wish I could meet these two, just to say thanks. While my issues may not seem as big as theirs' I was able to take the advice provided throughout and apply it in my own life.

A nice read.
