Becoming Ben

Rate this book
When my ex-wife divorced me because of our passionless marriage, I had no idea what the problem was. However, since I agreed to become roommates with my daughter’s best friend, I can’t think about anything but passion with him.

Obviously, I won’t do anything about it. He’s much younger than me, and I wouldn't even know what to do with a lover, especially a male one. But Trey is so nice, so fun, and so hot that I’m afraid I might slip and fall into his arms.

I just hope my daughter never finds out how foolish I’m being.

I don’t even want to call this a slow burn, because that would imply there was any sorry of spark.

There are books where a main character struggles with their past and finds a partner to work through their trauma with—but then there are books like this, where it feels like the author is just checking off the “socially correct” answer to trauma boxes rather than actually diving into the issues in a meaningful way.

It wasn’t hot, and honestly, both MMC were so one dimensionally dull that everything felt completely flat.

Becoming Ben is the fourth book in the Shafter Falls series. This could be read as a standalone story but I like reading all the books in a series. This is the story of Ben and Trey. Joy Danvers has written another amazing story with all the feels you could ask for. These two are so perfectly different that they just work. I loved the other characters especially Mandy. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

This story is captivating for the pacing, alternate awakening, and a well-developed assortment of characters.

The story really begins with the end of a marriage of Ben and his wife, both parents to an apparently very savvy daughter named Mandy. She has befriended a fellow college classmate who had to live on the streets and address his own sobriety and mission by himself. That mission is to help others who had to overcome addiction and homophobia among other things.

Destined to be a psychologist, Trey's background complements his goal in life and ensures friends are those who can, are understanding his struggle and many who are also dealing with a similar background.

Ben, Mandy's father, accepts that his marriage was without passion, continuing to love his former wife. He accepts they are not compatible sexually. He meets Trey, Mandy's bestie, at the wedding of his former wife and another man, whom Ben supports and encourages.

What Joy Danvers shares with us is the journey of this younger, but not much younger man and Ben, as well as his Ben’s family and those around Trey. It is an awakening of Ben to recognize he's attracted to the well-meaning, and purpose-driven Trey whose background would have many running from him. Together they navigate getting to know each other, and it's clear they are meant for each other.

However, the low angst comes from a jointly held belief that they can't be with each other for various reasons, but in the end, they do have a happy ever after.

This is a quick read, but an emotional and deep one. Ms. Danvers has a efficiency in her writing, and there's not a lot of dribble associated with her dialogues. The narratives of the home Trey and Ben creates a warm household, and the relationships and dialogue play out well. An outstanding example is Ben's daughter Mandy whose take charge behavior saves Ben and Trey from each other after a disturbing homophobic episode. The scene was one of the best highlights of the book, being realistic, sobering and a point of angst for Trey and Ben.

I highly recommend this book as it is a feel-good story, grown from hardship, an incompatible marriage, a great daughter and lots of love. The characters are fully developed, easy to see and appreciate their roles.

I’m believing that Ms. Danvers may have more to give from this story, and I hope there is another episode that we can enjoy. I did receive an Advance Read Copy of this book, but this is solely my work and no one influenced this review.

Becoming Ben is a sweet and funny, low-angst story. The plot is simple—there's not a lot of drama or action—but the story moves along well, and it avoids fluffy filler. While the progression of the romance between the main characters is a bit fast, it doesn't feel rushed or unrealistic (and the speed is somewhat a part of the story). The only part that feels like there's a slight gap regards an off-page murder that's mentioned offhandedly. There's not really any explanation of who the characters involved are or what happened. It feels like a big thing to mention without really following up on, but also a rather odd side note to put in if it's not important to the story. (This might be followed up on in subsequent books, but it feels a little jarring when reading this as a standalone). That said, this is only a small point and didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the story.

The real focus of the book is the characters and their stories. Ben is adorably sweet and awkward—and just so nice and occasionally naïve that you kind of want to hug him—while Trey adds a bit of spice and cynicism. There's a charming vulnerability to both of them that, though regarding different things and manifesting in different ways, adds balance to their relationship. And while the book is light as a whole, it also delves into deeper issues and gritty reality when it comes to Trey's past, which adds a nice depth to the story. Ben and Trey's relationship is endearing and lovely—though not without its bumps—and manages to not fall into clichés or an expected dynamic.

In addition, Ben's daughter Mandy is an unexpected gem. She's described as "an excited pixie" and "color in motion"—and it absolutely fits—but she's also empathetic, kind, and a no-nonsense force of nature when needed (the results of which are hilarious). Overall, it's simply refreshing to see a story where the characters actually react in mature (if realistic) ways. Not that there aren't miscommunications, but there's no huge drama where characters can't accept others' choices. The group seems like a found family where the members—though maybe a bit of an unusual combo—truly want each other to be happy.

Ultimately, Becoming Ben is an enjoyable and uplifting read (though don't worry, the spice and laughs are definitely there as well!). Having read several of the author's other books, I can see the progression here of the author's writing in rhythm and flow. Definitely worth a read!.

This heartfelt book has an incredible story line. The characters are heartwarming and capture you from the very beginning. Ben is a middle aged divorced father who is attending his ex wives wedding. They are great friends and he truly likes and appreciates the man she is marrying. Sherri his ex left him because they had no passion in their marriage although they had a lot of love and respect for each other it was a friendship that worked. At the reception his daughter Mandy’s best friend shows up as her date. Ben is instantly drawn to him and Trey feels the attraction as well. Needing a place to stay for a few months Mandy sets it up for Trey to move in with her dad. Ben is almost giddy to have Trey move in. Their connection continues to blossom until they are a couple. Ben never realized the passion missing from his previous marriage was because he was attracted to men. He had always just followed suit with what society had expected of him. With Trey he felt passion and love, he was so happy to find this part of himself. However, when the couple finds that not everyone is supportive of same sex couples and Ben loses his client. Trey leaves not wanting to put Ben in a position of losing everything he’s worked for. Can Ben get Trey to come back? Is their love strong enough to withstand the hate of others? Readers can expect to be cheering for the couple and the happily ever after they both deserve.

What a warm hug of a book. Ben is truly the best of men; loving, accepting, and kind of lonely. His marriage ended but he's remained close with his ex-wife (truly she's his best friend) and he's ecstatic that she's met her true match. Ben knows something was missing from his marriage, but he's never really been sure what it was. That's until he lays eyes on his daughter Mandy's best friend Trey. All of the sudden he's feeling things he's never experienced. He wants, like right now. Trey has built himself back up after a terrible teenage years. Things are still hard sometimes and he needs to find a place to live for the summer so he can keep pursuing his dreams of becoming a mental health professional. The perfect solution appears when Mandy offers Ben's spare rooms and Ben readily agrees. As they spend more time together neither man can deny the feelings between them, but Trey worries that his past will ruin things for Ben. I really loved this story. Ben is absolutely a golden retriever of a man that has so much love to share and he is the sweetest thing. Trey is also a great character and the way he treats Ben is great. There's a lot of praise and sharing meals and cuddling and I am here for it. It was the perfect sweet treat in these hard times.

It feels like ages since I visited Shafter Falls so I was looking forward to returning there. We first meet Ben as he attends his ex-wife's wedding. With him is his daughter Mandy and her best friend Trey, her rent-a-date for the event. From the moment Ben and Trey meet, there is sparks and that is where it is left till Mandy asks her dad to put Trey up for the summer.
Ben was such a refreshing character, he was not bitter over his divorce and would still tell everyone that his ex-wife was still his best friend. His attraction to Trey does not scare him and he was so eager to have a relationship with Trey. Trey had had a difficult past which he worked hard to overcome and he was still working hard to be the best. What with working towards his Masters, volunteering at the shelter and about to start an internship, he was a busy man, but even he could not deny his attraction to Ben even though he was his best friend's dad.
This was a low angst story that was an easy read. Ben and Trey were right for each other filling a need they both wanted. Seeing the light bulb moment when Ben realised what it was like to love with passion and Trey getting someone to care for him with that passion, something he never dreamed of.
Reading this has got me wanting to re-read the others in this series and I will do this before the next one comes out

Finding the One . . .

Ben Johnson and his ex-wife Sherri divorced 4 years ago at her request. Although they both had good jobs, hobbies, a lovely home, and a daughter they both loved, something was missing. And finally she sat down with him to explain how things just were not working. Now she is marrying again and Ben is attending the wedding, comfortable with her obvious joy. Seeing them together, he understands what she had meant. She truly is happy and looks at Mitch as if he is the only one she sees. Their daughter, Mandy, sits next to her dad, also happy for her mom’s joy. After the ceremony, Ben helps out in the kitchen, then goes to find his daughter who had said she had a date coming. But seeing the handsome guy she was with took his breath away! She started introducing Trey to all her relatives. Their family is very supportive of each other and it makes Trey happy for his best friend who is obviously loved and protected. Now he just has to keep his attraction to her dad under wraps!

When Trey needs a place to stay for the summer, the most sensible idea is for him to move in with Ben who has plenty of room. Both of them are caring, thoughtful people. Will their attraction be enough to bring them together? Surrounded by kindness and understanding, falling in love seems like the path each are meant to be on. Will they get their happy ending?

This is a sweet story about Ben, older, divorced and father to Mandy, and Trey, younger with a backstory, a student and Mandy’s best friend. When the two meet at a family wedding, there is an instant attraction, but Ben has only been with women, and Trey is gay and would never hit on his best friend’s dad. They meet again when Trey needs a place to live over the summer before he goes back to school in the fall, and Mandy suggests he stay at her dad’s. Ben misses having someone to be around and to cook for, so the arrangement is made. Both initially shy away from anything remotely sexual, but eventually the attraction is too much and boundaries come down, leading to a relationship that gives both what they want and need.
Sweet, low angst, slow moving relationship with a younger man leading and Ben willingly following, finding an emotional and physical connection beyond anything either had ever imagined. Realistic, relatable characters exploring something new with the support of Mandy and Ben’s ex-wife, a coming of age story for Ben as he learns things about himself which he never knew, and finding a home, place and the person that Trey never realized he wanted. A satisfying read that just flows naturally as the relationship develops.

In “Becoming Ben”, readers are introduced to a delightful age-gap relationship that unfolds between Ben, an older man, and Trey, a younger gay man. From their very first encounter, there’s an undeniable chemistry that ignites their journey. However, both characters grapple with their feelings, creating an engaging tension throughout the narrative.

Ben, portrayed as the archetypical older gentleman, strives to connect with Trey, but often finds himself overthinking his actions. His attempts to please Trey add to the story’s charm, making readers root for their relationship. On the other hand, Trey struggles with his emotions, torn between his attraction and the fear of vulnerability. This push and pull is a delightful exploration of intimacy, making it an endearing read.

One of the standout elements of the book is Trey’s best friend, who also happens to be Ben’s daughter. She injects a refreshing energy into the narrative, as both comic relief and a fierce supporter of their blossoming relationship. Despite the absence of high drama, the book captures the essence of everyday life as Ben and Trey navigate their new living arrangement. Ultimately, “Becoming Ben” offers a cozy, low-angst reading experience perfect for a relaxing weekend escape.

Ben is happily attending his ex-wife’s wedding with their daughter, Mandy, when he meets Mandy’s best friend Trey. It’s pretty amazing how well Ben and his ex-wife get along. Trey is also a senior in college, but older than most students due to a difficult past. Both are immediately drawn to each other, but dismiss the feelings because Ben has never thought of himself as gay, and Trey is mindful of their 16 year age gap and their connection through Ben’s daughter.

When Trey needs a place to live over the summer, Mandy arranges for him to live with Ben, since Ben has plenty of space and Trey can have a private room/bath. Feeling more drawn to Trey, Ben turns to his ex-wife for help talking through his feelings. As they get to know each other better, Ben and Trey act on their attraction, though they do have some communication issues.

Ultimately Ben and Trey get to their HEA in this sweet, low-angst read. CW: There is some past trauma (Trey’s), and homophobic reaction from one of Ben’s clients. I’ve read one other book in this series, and now I feel like I have to catch up with the others!.

Becoming Ben is another treasure set in Shafter Falls. I've truly enjoyed each of the stories set in this fictional town and had pre-ordered the book before lucking into the opportunity to receive an ARC.
Ben is simply the sweetest, most kind-hearted man you can imagine. He seems almost impossibly innocent though he's an adult with an ex-wife and a daughter in college. Being privy to Ben's thoughts as he navigates an unexpected attraction to Trey, a man sixteen years his junior and also his daughter's best friend is an opportunity to view complex thoughts and emotions through a unique lens. While Trey matches Ben in both thoughtfulness and kindness, his life has not been easy and he's had to work hard to overcome challenges that are far outside Ben's world of experience.
Becoming Ben is a beautiful story of two men learning to understand themselves more fully as they fall in love with each other. It contains the incredibly open and honest communication I've enjoyed in each of Joy Danvers' books so far. It's an easy read with low angst, well-developed and likable characters, and a heartwarming HEA that will leave you smiling.

This is the fourth book in the series, but can be read as a standalone if you prefer. I liked the premises of this story as a best friends dad, age gap, proximity romance, is why I picked it up. Once I started to read I really appreciated that we got both Trey and Ben their (abbreviated) background to the point were they now are in their respective lives. I do appreciate that the author doea not delve further in Trey his background since he is looking dorward and nows he can't forget, but has worked hard to where he is now. I do appreciate that Trey is in his late twenties and does seem the more mature person in knowing who he is. I had a bit of an ick moment when the author made a point of Mandy giving Trey her fathers' phone number for a legit reason The spiel around that did not fit at all in the pace and tone of this book. Which was ptoved when it never came up again. That detracted for me. Major points to side characters Mandy and Sherri, Ben his daughter and his ex wife. They are strong and likeable women which sometimes lacks in mm romance.

This story was a super sweet and easy read. Ben seemed younger than Trey to me, although the story was set to be the other way around. The age gap was not really important in the story and did not add or takeaway to the general feel. Ben's daughters' opinion was not really an issue either, I felt from the start like she set up the whole living situation so that Ben and Trey could connect on a deeper level. I really liked Ben's daughter as a side character. Ben seemed lost until he met Trey, thinking he was a person who was not passionate or not worthy of love or relationships, it seemed he was ok with being alone. Along came Trey and changed his world! Trey opened up possibilities for Ben and showed him what love truly meant. I enjoyed following their relationship journey, and even through there was a small bit of angst in the story, it wasn't soul destroying and didn't drag on. Overall, I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to other readers.

Great addition to the series!

I loved Becoming Ben by Joy Danvers. It's the fourth book in the Shaffer Falls series. I loved Ben and Trey's story. I loved Ben's praise and service kink. And I loved his instant attraction to Trey. I also loved that Ben didn't beat around the bush when communicating with Trey and how he made sure to find out what he had done wrong when he accidentally hurt Trey by what he said or did so that he wouldn't do it again. I loved how close he was with his ex-wife and how he would go to her for advice as he navigated his new relationship. I also loved Mandy and how thrilled she was when her best friend, Trey, got together with her dad. I loved her friendship with Trey and how she befriend him in college and that he trusted her enough to tell her what happened in his past. I thought it was a great story.

4.5 stars!

This was such a good book! Zero angst, just a sweet second chance for Ben and Trey—two of the sweetest guys you can imagine.

For Ben, it was a second chance to find the kind of love his ex wife, as well as those around him, had found but he himself had never experienced.

Trey, who had been kicked out by his parents as a teen and forced to live on the streets, had never allowed himself to get close to anyone. Here, the two finally found their own chance at happiness.

If you like sweet as sugar romance, two slightly insecure, emotionally needy MCs and a best friend’s dad with a side of bi-awakening, this might be your next favorite read. I won’t say it’s MY favorite read by this author (that title belongs to Waking Wyatt) but it IS one I’ll happily reread. Check it out. 4.5 stars!.

BECOMING BEN is the fourth in Joy Danvers’ Shafter Falls series. Accountant Ben Johnson is amicably divorced, and truly thrilled his ex has met the love of her life. He realizes he’s never experienced that, and is startled to note that he’s got some surprising reactions to his new roommate, his daughter’s best friend, psychology student Trey Vaughn.

Joy Danvers has written an engaging story for Trey and Ben, incorporating Ben’s bi-awakening and Trey’s painful past. While they hit a few bumps along the way, overall Ms Danvers lets readers see how their generous spirits and willingness to share what is on their hearts go a long way toward helping them build a future together. A lovely read.

I loved every minute of this book, I couldn't put it down. Ben and Trey have both had very different life experiences but when Trey is Ben's daughters date to her mum's wedding the sparks between the two fly.

I love all the dynamics in this story, Ben's relationship with his ex wife, Trey with Maddie and the way Trey and Ben support each other and find their way through the issues that crop up. These two really were meant to be and there are a few moments in the story that made my heart melt.

Absolutely beautiful and some very sexy, steamy scenes that are full of love.

I wish we had the ability to give half-stars here, because my actual rating is 3.5 ⭐️

I've read a couple of other books in this series, so while it is book 4, it can absolutely be read as a standalone. There's a bit in the book that mentions people of a specific generation not knowing they had a choice other than to submit to their assigned gender role, and I like that message. That sexuality is fluid and can change. I also love the interracial representation of the couple here. Bravo! This was a good book, if not a tad short (but most of the books in this series are).

I was sent an advance reader copy of this book and this is my honest review.

This was such a sweet and precious story. Ben is newly divorced and meets his daughter’s best friend Trey at his ex-wife’s wedding. You think that would be all kinds of wrong and hurt feelings. Not so! And that’s why this story is so sweet. Everyone is so understanding and open-minded, it is refreshing. That is not to say that Trey and Ben don’t have bumps in the road to their happiness and they don’t have a past to overcome, and that’s the story of Becoming Ben—the one that makes this book worth the read. Heart warming and life-affirming, I need more Ben and Trey in my life. I wouldn’t mind a Mandy on my side, too!

Loved the story. Loved the characters.
The title is a bit misleading though. I don't think enough focus was on Ben for it to be titled as such. He is way to quick to accept his attraction to Trey considering that this silver fox has never been attracted to men before. I would expect some serious soul-searching not just a short conversation with his ex-wife then being totally fine. HOWEVER, once he is okay with it, he's definitely all-in, which is great!

I felt the story actually focused more on Trey and the experiences he had before Ben. These lead to his insecurities, jumping to conclusions, and lack of trust that we see throughout the book. We read more about his feelings than Ben's.

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Mandi and her total acceptance of her dad. I love that she never questioned her friendship with Trey - from the day they met. More people should be like that!

I loved Becoming Ben: Book 4 of Shafter Falls. Ben is a little lost after his divorce and meeting his daughter’s friend Trey has him thinking things he never has before. Trey has had a hard life and after turning things around, he finds himself needing a place to stay. Ben offers Trey a home, a real home for the first time in a long time. Feelings grow and Ben must face new feelings, and how he wants the future to be with Trey. I loved the story and the characters. I laughed and cried. Such a sweet story. I would definitely recommend this book.

Really enjoyed this emotional, Heartwarming, self awareness with awkward moments (like teenager times🥴) that makes you feel not so alone in your much older self. Ben and Trey's story has sweet and tender moments, self doubts moments, and talks with supportive friends to help navigate through the rough patches. I loved both characters and Trey's struggles, challenges with his past and how the changes he tries to make to his life now is eye opening. Loved the quote..." Closets are made for coats, not people." Grab this book today and let your heart be touched!!.

Ben is divorced and a father to Mandy. When his Ex remarries, Ben attends and meets Mandy's BF Trey. Both are attracted but Ben has always been straight, never been attracted to a man or most women, afraid of messing with Mandy's BF, so many hesitations. Trey is super busy getting his masters, working, volunteering, etc but a warm, mellow comfort eases into a relationship. It's pleasant to read of a slow burn, comfortable forming of love with very little angst. And the take their time love making is so hot. I love the patience, tenderness, concern and age difference. I received a copy of this book through Booksprout and this is my voluntary opinion.

As a rule, I am not generally into age gap. However, I have read many other of Joy's book and so I read this one. I LOVED it. It was SO cute, SO sweet. The characters were so lovely, so relatable. There are many people that are older that suddenly are realizing that they are queer, that they really weren't into what they always thought they were. I loved Ben, he was such a wonderful, three dimensional character. I loved Trey and his beautiful way he interacted with Ben. I loved Mandy and the relationship Ben had with his Ex Wife. It was just SO sweet. This was a truly enjoyable low angst read.

I loved this story reading this book was quite good this book drew me in. This story was about Ben and Trey, Ben is divorced with a daughter he still loves his ex-wife, and Trey is single gay man. This was a slow burn romance, age gap, straight to gay, gay, lgɓq. and has not dated ever since their divorce. Trey has had a horrible past, the things that he has done and gone through no fault of his own. When they all went to a wedding Ben and Trey, were dancing having the best time. Feelings changed.

Ben’s wife asked for a divorce but still friendly, went to her wedding and got along with her husband. Ben’s daughter Mandy asked him if her friend Trey could stay in one of the guest rooms for the summer so he didn’t have to find an apartment til college started back up. They started getting close, Mandy and ex-wife were happy he had someone in his life. Trey heard what one of Ben’s clients said about them so he packs and leaves. Mandy found Trey for her dad and take him to her father’s home and makes him listen to her father.

Becoming Ben is a fluffy and low angst read.
The characters are likeable and have decent backstories. However, it were the sidecharacters that actually stole the show for me.
Ben was a wholesome cinnamon roll. A true golden retriever of a man. However, what did irk me a bit about his character was that he does not act like an actual grown up mature man. He feels more ‘people pleasing mid 20s young woman’ with the way he acts, talks and reacts to people and situations around him.
Trey is a bit better fleshed out. A well thought out backstory with enough struggle to overcome to make him a bit cynical but still optimistic and loving enough to help and want to make a difference for people in need.
The side characters are sweet, snarky and add in some comedic flavor. Without them the story would be a bit bland.
All in all it was for all intents and purposes a relaxing read. Low angst, low drama and a whole load of fluff.

I liked the duality of this book.

Ben is a soft man. He’s naïve and a little bit sheltered. He’s never really felt true sexual attraction before in his life. Although he is older and does have “daddy“
tendencies and a deep need to care for those around him, he’s also a bit submissive and needs a strong man to lead.

Trey, on the other hand, grew up rough and his harsh background leads him to absorb Ben’s “daddy” caring like a sponge. He’s also a fairly dominant man, and he loves the way whispering how “good” Ben is can make him trimble.

Together the two can find a balance between themselves that makes a pleasing whole.

Falling for your daughter's best friend shouldn’t be a good thing, should it? That's the question that Ben faces when he meets Trey at his ex-wife's wedding. An innocent touch during the reception sends awareness through both men that neither are prepared to acknowledge as appropriate. When Ben offers Trey accommodation for the summer, their proximity and understanding of Ben's daughter gives them the chance to explore how they are together despite their age difference. A very sweet romance.
