Born and raised in Virginia, Heather spent her childhood reading any book she could get her hands on. At an early age, she quickly found her love for writing, certain she would one day write and publish a novel.
"The Flame" is her debut horror novel, while her second story, "The Disappearing Sun," (released September 5, 2026) is a psychological thriller. A horror/psychological thriller lover herself, there wasn't a single doubt which genres she would find the most joy writing. It is advised not to read "The Flame" if disturbing or graphic content negatively affects the reader. The writing is detailed and not suitable for individuals who require a list of trigger warnings.
Aside from writing, Heather enjoys putting together puzzles, listening to music or relaxing on the couch with a good show playing on the television. She maintains a relatively private life, but keeps up with her social media presence as often as she can. She plans to continue writing dark fiction novels in the future, whether it be horror or psychological thrillers, excitedly awaiting the next opportunity to evoke the raw emotions her readers often feel from her work.

This book was written very well and the story was easy to follow. I like all of the horror and grotesque aspects of the book. I also love how the author didn’t go into too much detail on certain things and only gave us what we needed to get the storyline.

I really enjoyed this book overall, and found it to be an easy and engaging read…despite some of the parts that were very gory or touched on very dark topics. Overall I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who’s a fan of gore/horror and who loves a good twist! Really enjoyed the FMC, and the character of Mr. Gordon. Very well written, the cover is also gorgeous. Would definitely read anything else from this author any time!!

The Flame heats up quick, burning a hole through the mind, body, and soul before you finish the final page!

As someone who has been desensitized to the horror genre from such an early age, it can certainly be a challenge for any type of horror media, be it film, television, or in this case, a novel, to have any type of effect on me while ingesting it. I had heard that this was a disturbing piece of fiction before diving in, yet still, I felt as if I would easily conquer the task of an emotional beatdown as I turned from page to page. But, then I got to chapter 1…
The main protagonist in the story, a high school girl named Molly, endures vicious amounts of both physical and emotional trauma, that will certainly be difficult for some readers to observe. The Flame speaks out to the type of evil that isn’t about supernatural monsters or creatures that go bump in the night, but more so that the scariest forms of evil are the kind that are real. Especially when they stem from beneath your own roof. I certainly don’t want to give away anything that happens throughout the plot, but I will say that once it finally seems as if our heroine is finally on the heels of a break, more tragedy strikes, and every time you feel as if author Heather Brown can’t hit you with more trauma, more pain…the flame grows stronger.
I will say that I did find some of the chapters towards the center of the novel to become somewhat redundant in their approach, and as a horror veteran I would be lying if I said that I didn’t predict most of the final events that took place, but that being said, The Flame was still an awesome read, especially as we approach the month of October. The writing is elegant, even in the extreme’s, and author Heather Brown doesn’t shy away from the vivid descriptions that will have horror hounds barking at the moon with sick pleasure. Picture Carrie, Last House On The Left, and I Spit On Your Grave, all rolled up into a ball. A ball that is then lit on fire and thrown directly at your face.
Overall, this is a book I highly suggest you challenge yourself to read. Even if it means you might come out on the other side a little more burnt than you were before!

The Flame by Heather Brown is a dark, brutal read that reminds you that even the brightest flame of hope can't keep burning when everything around it is trying to put it out.

The story follows Molly as she endures years of mental, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of her father, Charlie. Brown doesn't pull punches when it comes to showing the damage that kind of trauma leaves behind, and some scenes are genuinely difficult to get through. The horror here isn't just the gore. It's the reality of what Molly experiences and the impossible situations she keeps finding herself trapped in.

After escaping her father, Molly isn't suddenly free. Instead, she's forced to navigate a world filled with more people willing to take advantage of her vulnerability. The story becomes less about healing and more about survival as Molly finds herself confronting the men who have hurt her while trying to hold on to what little control she has left.

What kept me reading was Molly herself. No matter how bleak things became, I wanted to see how far she was willing to go to survive. This is the kind of book that feels raw, ugly, and deeply uncomfortable at times, but that's exactly what makes it effective. Brown fully commits to the darkness of the story and never looks away from the consequences of the abuse Molly suffers.

And while the journey is dark from start to finish, it all builds toward an ending that I never saw coming. It's the kind of ending that doesn't leave you with hope or closure. Instead, it leaves you sitting with the weight of everything Molly has endured.

Trigger warnings: graphic gore, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and other disturbing content.

Definitely Not for the Faint of Heart

I’m not going to lie, The Flame was A LOT at times. This book gets extremely gruesome and disturbing, and there were definitely moments where I was wondering where exactly the story was going with all of it.

But once I got to the end and everything started coming together, I completely understood why the story needed to be as graphic as it was. The gruesome parts didn’t feel like they were there just for shock value anymore. They actually helped build toward the twist and made the ending hit so much harder.

And that twist… I did not see it coming.

It’s one of those endings that immediately makes you think back through everything you just read because suddenly certain moments make a whole lot more sense. I actually appreciated the earlier parts of the book even more once I understood what Heather Brown was doing.

This definitely won’t be a book for everyone because it goes to some VERY dark places, but if you enjoy disturbing horror and can handle some pretty graphic scenes, I absolutely recommend giving it a shot.

Gruesome as hell, but completely worth it once everything comes together.

If I could rate it higher than 5 Stars I would!!

Dark, Gripping, and Absolutely Unforgettable

The Flame is one of the darkest and most gripping horror/thriller novels I've ever read. From the very first chapter, Heather Brown builds an atmosphere filled with suspense, which kept me hooked until the very end.

Molly is a powerful, deeply relatable character, and for readers who see pieces of themselves in her, this story can be surprisingly healing despite its darkness. Every chapter pulled me in, and just when I thought I had things figured out, the ending completely caught me off guard.

That final chapter had me practically bouncing in my seat. I never saw it coming, and it was the perfect way to end an unforgettable story.

If you love dark, suspenseful horrors with emotional depth and a jaw dropping twist, The Flame is a must read.

My Goodness!!! What an amazing read. It's been a while since I've read something that grabbed my attention. I would try to read a chapter every night, but a chapter would turn into two or three, and then it would be 2 AM, and I'd be wide awake reading.
Heather sets the bar high for her genre; her novel takes you on a twisted, dark ride, which sometimes makes you feel uncomfortable, yet you want to keep reading. It's a whole experience. From feeling bad for the main character to feeling like she's a bit of a psycho to feeling happy for her, my emotions were all over the place.
P.S. The first chapter is not easy to get through, but once you make it past it, everything seems to be almost like a walk in the park hahah.

“The Flame” is the kind of dark, emotional story that wraps around you and refuses to let go. Molly’s journey is unsettling, heartbreaking, hopeful, and tense all at once. I felt everything — anger, sadness, anxiety, suspicion, even moments of unexpected warmth — and that final twist nearly made me scream.

Knowing the author personally, it’s wild to think this story came purely from her imagination. It’s fiction, but the reality behind it is painfully true for too many kids in the real world. That weight stays with you.

I’m already counting down to her second book coming in 2026 — a darker thriller that I know is going to be even more intense. Heather Brown is absolutely an author to watch.

What a great debut by Heather-thoroughly enjoyed it!
Molly lives in an abusive relationship with her father until she decides enough is enough. But her torment doesn't end there. Abused by 3 boys at school in particular, the relentless mental and physical torment continues and after one especially harrowing ordeal, she decides it's time to put a stop to it all...
This was a fine debut from Heather. If you're a hardened extreme fan looking for the nastiest book, this isn't it, but the storyline and many of the scenes are quite relentless and dark! Looking forward to reading her next book!

Sometimes you just wanna read a dark messed up book where basically every character is screwed up in some way. This is definitely one of those books that are dark and disturbing in the best ways.

Also, as someone who kind of prides themselves on being able to see twists coming, I can admit that I did not predict the ending reveal of this book. Which was a great surprise.

I’m really excited to see what comes next from this author!

I really enjoyed this book. The story is compelling and I got sucked into it right away. I did think it took a lot of unforseen turns, though. The story does go a very different way than what you're expecting when you start reading. However, the ending explains all this. I'm not really sure how I feel about the ending, having only just finished the book. It's definitely unexpected and it takes a kind of weird turn... I need more rime to process it.
I'd definitely recommend it, though.

Very dark and lots of gore. I loved it.

This takes twisted to a level I've not seen much before, but it's on-point. I read this whole thing in half a day, and I gotta say, it was a half-day was well spent. A great read for those out there like me, who like a little darkness in their entertainment.

“The Flame” is truly gripping from the first chapter alone. Absolutely not for the weak of stomach and definitely a dark read. I loved that the characters were believable not in just actions but dialogue as well. I found myself unable to put it down completely immersed in the story. I never would have expected the ending! I’m excited to read more from this author.
